Time to get rid of Maps 2.0 beta, and upgrade to the final version

Here’s one more reason for you to finally upgrade to the “final” version of Nokia Maps 2.0: we are going to stop supporting satellite images on the beta client soon.

Don’t worry, just upgrade and you’ll still receive satellite maps as before. (not to mention getting the other cool stuff like network based positioning, which is ultra-fast and works also indoors)

  1. Hmm, it says upgrade, but it seems that I must buy the product. No way….

  2. Buy? Read again.

You pay for the routed navigation but the app is free.

  3. I have already upgraded, but honestly… I can’t see big differences, meaning: “this is working very well”.

I will try that “network positioning”…

  4. […] 1- The beta will expire shortly and no longer allow you to access satellite images.  You will need to upgrade to the final version. (care of betalabs) […]

  9. Used Maps 2.0 in London yesterday, my previous license had expired so I didn’t use the routing…I’d pre-planned my route.

Walked out of Paddington train station, got a GPS lock in seconds and found out which road I was on - London rail stations have multiple exits and it’s often unclear which road you will exit on.

I started walking and the map scroll showed me which direction I was going…the wrong one. I turned around and walked the other way made 2 or 3 turns and got straight to my destination address.

    Excellent.

  10. Just upgraded to the final release of Maps 2.0 from the beta version which I had been very happy with and was looking forward to the final release.
But now having tried it today with the latest maps and an existing navigation licence I have to say that it is the WORST GPS SYSTEM I’VE EVER USED and will no longer be recommending it to anyone.
The first problem I have is that the final release in now using the crap Teleatlas maps Again which are ok for POI but their roads mapping is completely inaccurate for Ireland. At one point they thought I was driving a boat across a lake as they were out by at least 0.5Km and are out by 50-100 most of the time, which to me is total unacceptable. When the Beta version used Navteq mapping I was delighted as Maps 1.0 was poor with teleatlas but nowhere near as bad as Maps 2.0 FINAL??! I thought Nokia had taken over Navteq and if so why do they continue to supply their competitor Teleatlas maps for their phones?
The second issue is that now with 2.0 final it continually lost the GPS signal on my route home from work which was never had a problem before. This loss of signal makes it totally unusable and I feel like throwing the brick (N95 8GB) in the lake it said I was driving on.
Once my Years subscription to is up I will be changing my phone and never again purchasing or recommending a Nokia product unless they pull the finger out a fix these issues.
    :((

  13. I upgraded to the version you had linked there. Here is what I have experienced:

    Positive:
    1. The maps look clean, clear, and professional.
    2. The rest of the display (with the speed and so forth) is nice. It is a typical navigator screen.

    Negative:
    1. I get “Make a U Turn” continuously every few minutes. It seems the navigator gets temporarily mixed up often. Shortly afterward it will usually give the correct directions. It happens more often when I drive faster, above about 70 km/h. It might have something to do with the maps not being downloaded yet. The maps seem to have gaps in their level of detail at those points where this happens.

    2. I don’t like the navifator’s process of looking up an address. I tried to look up Joensuunkatu 7, but it didn’t give the alternative at that address that I was looking for, which happens to be Nokia Oyj. The same goes with my home address - it does not give an alternative at that address.

    Suggestions:
    1. It should be able to avoid unpaved roads. I would like to plan trips avoiding unpaved roads. There is a selection of other things to avoid, such as ferries and tunnels, but no unpaved roads. Tom Tom, for example, warns if the route has unpaved roads and will try to avoid them by default, and will warn if an alternative route has unpaved roads.

  14. @12 The 3230 doesn’t have GPS, but the 3230 should be able to do navigation with an external Bluetooth GPS module. I don’t know if you can get Nokia Maps working in it, but there are other navigator programs you can get. Google Symbian bluetooth GPS navigator, for example.
