Introducing Nokia Map Loader 2.0 beta

Nokia Map Loader 2.0 beta

Guest blogger: Stefan Gimeson from Nokia Maps team

With Map Loader 2.0 you can buy navigation and city guides directly from your PC!

Map Loader 2.0 includes a web shop where you can purchase and download navigation, traffic information and city guide licenses directly to your device. There is no need for activation, just download and you are ready to explore your world.

The new “Services” tab will let you browse through Drive*, Drive&Walk*, Traffic* and City Guides before deciding what to buy. In addition, the clear and easy to understand graphical representation will show what region is covered by the license. You will see exactly what you buy before buying.

Selecting “Guides” will let you browse through City Guides and Multimedia Guides from all over the world. Selecting one will show you information on the contents and you can download them directly to your device. It has never been so easy to find the right guide for your destination!

New connection mode

Map Loader 2.0 now supports PC Suite connections. This means that you can connect several devices over USB or Bluetooth connection. Mass storage mode is also supported for older Nokia Maps versions and memory cards. In mass storage mode the new “Services” tab will not be available and Map Loader 2.0 will behave like Map Loader 1.x. On startup, a popup will show connected devices and will let you choose the drive/device to use. Make sure you have the latest PC Suite installed (http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite).

Shop

After selecting a navigation license or downloading a guide you will be transferred to the payment page. Enter you credit card data; confirm payment and the license will be downloaded to your device. Your credit card data is sent over a secure https connection. You will also receive an email receipt.

Purchased licenses

In the bottom of the “Services” screen, there is a list of your previously purchased licenses and their expiration date. This will help you to see when it is time to renew you licenses.

Feedback

Download Map Loader 2.0 and let us know what you think! Make sure to uninstall any older version of maploader before installing Map Loader 2.0. Note that this is still a beta, so there are some limitations:

  • Not tested on S40, so please don’t use it :)
  • In “Drive & Walk” the navigation region “Russia & Ukraine” is only navigable in Russia.
  • Disconnecting and reconnecting a device while Map Loader 2.0 is running can sometimes lead to unexpected results.
  • Make sure your phone time is correct before buying any licenses.

  2. Incompatible with the Nseries PC Suite 2.0?

Tells me I need the latest PC Suite installed, I presume it’s after 6.86, not the Nseries one.

  4. yukotan you have to connect your phone in pcsuite mode to see this tab.in usb mode it’s not displayed.

@ Betalabs Team: It would be nice to buy things over the mobile phone bill instead of credit card.Or the ebst thing would be if u integrate a paypal function this also works worldwide.not everybody have a credit card so it would be a good alterantive.

  5. wondering if Nokia will do something to Linux users next days .. trolltech should to do ! :(

it’s shame when Nokia use maemo and buy trolltech and there is no supported software for Nokia phones in linux were mac osx and windows have a lot of them !

I am optimistic that Beta labs guys will do something.. The situation will change soon .. Is not it?

  6. you do need to uninstall the old version, once I did it worked fine.

And I do really like not having to be in USB Transfer mode on my n95 8gb, much improved, found my current licences no probs.

    So far so good.

  7. just one thing… is there a way to check what version of the maps I have installed and see the version of the maps that will be downloaded from the server. That way I can tell if I need to download new maps or not.

  13. […] A new beta version of Nokia’s Map Loader was released today by the Beta Labs team introducing a few new features that will sure make it easier and more accessible to download maps as well as purchase navigation and city guides. Instead of performing these on the phone, you can now browse through the options from your computer using Map Loader 2.0, then buy them using your credit card information (no Paypal, unfortunately). 14. Got it working on my XP and Vista box, all dandy.

    1. Yay for PC Suite mode support.
    2. Why the ugly fonts and scroll bars in the store? Make it consistent.
    3. Speaking of consistency, maybe it’s time to use the Ovi maps logo (grayscale compass, y’know)
    4. Make it so the download procedure appears on a bar in the main app window, so people can continue to browser the store while the maps download.
    5. Additionally, make a make a pane or tab showing what you already have on the phone, Maps, date downloaded, if there are updates, licenses, price you paid, when they expire, and maybe even a fun part, like “how much KMs you traveled using Nokia Maps” etc
    6. Prices for the licenses? And make the Services store a little more tidy, there are too many empty areas of the windows, and still the explanation vanishes when you click in something that brings up a map.
    7. Unrelated, but why do you guys skipped Sweden for traffic info? :P

And the general complaint of “dotNet sucks, use something else” :P

  15. Loaded the new version on my PC and now the application does not launch (newer or older) DO NOT INSTALL

    Comment by Ricardo — June 19, 2008 @ 9:16 pm

  16. Tried to install this new version on my PC, but it will not connect to my N95-1 in PC Suite mode.

It keeps displaying the message: ‘waiting for device’.

Tried all kinds of things to get it to work, but it simply doesn’t:
    - removed and reinstalled map loader
    - removed and reinstalled the latest pc suite
    - removed and reinstalled all cable drivers together with latest pc suite
    - removed and reinstalled the phone pc suite support
    - removed the entire ‘cities’ folder from my memory card
    - disabled virus scanner and firewall on both phone and pc

It does connect in ‘mass storage’, but simply does not in ‘pc suite mode’. I finally gave up and reinstalled the previous version of map loader. Pity…

    Comment by Ralf — June 19, 2008 @ 9:42 pm

  17. It doesn’t run.

Says the version of PC Suite I have is not compatible, but I don’t have PC Suite installed - I never connect my phone to my PC.

In the past I’ve loaded maps by putting my memory card into the PC and running Map Loader, is this feature still available?

  22. Get the usual ‘make sure you have internet connection…’ which I do but it goes through a proxy and Nokia software NEVER prompts for proxy. Every bit of software from Nokia is like that and very frustrating. And yes, I do have the proxy details in my browser set. I really wish someone would listen to this.

    Comment by Dmitriy — June 20, 2008 @ 1:05 pm

  27. Thank you for your initial comments. Some answers:

    - People having problems with “waiting for device” or “Unable to read all information…”, you could try the following:

    1. make sure you have maps 1.2 wk30 or later (or 2.0)
    2. connect the device in mass storage mode, it will show up as a drive in windows
    3. delete the folder E:\Private\20001f63 (including sub folders)
    4. start maps on the device once, it will recreate the folder in a different location
    5. connect the device in pc suite mode and start maploader

    - Heiko: we are looking at other payment options including paypal

    - Wolf: your current map version is shown in the bottom left corner, after “current drive”. The server will always send you the latest map for your nokia maps version.

    - Chris: we are looking at the vista problems

    - Pablo: the content of the “services” tab is a web page that might need some time to download, please try again.

    - Fernando: better looking maploader is in planning :) The idea with the download is a good one; we will take it into consideration. Currently it is not technically possible to show what maps you already have on the device - but this will change in the future.

    - Simon: maploader requires pc suite. Memory cards are supported just like in previous versions.

    - Mark: maploader uses the internet settings from internet explorer, are the settings there correct?

    - Chris B: yes, I forgot to add “Walk” in the original post. “Walk” licenses are already available for Maps 2.0 under “services”.

Thank you all for your valuable feedback, and have a good weekend.

Installed Map loader and ran it.
    Connected Via bluetooth.
No major problems (except….Forgot i had my mobile in my pocket and wandered away from the PC during a map upload) ! D’oh!

Added map and voice with no issues.

Will try a service download / payment at a later stage :D

I know this has to do with the Map Loader only…But I just have a question: why is it that the new Maps 2.0 does not show you the directions to where you are going without asking you to purchase voice directions….On Maps 1.0 it allows you to view the directions regardless of if you have purchased the voice or not….Why pay for both A-GPS and pay for network downloads for the maps at the same time..!!

  36. […] 39. I have been a fan of Beta Labs for quite some time, but I recently changed to a Linux operating system and find that I am now shut out from your efforts. With Linux garnering 20% of the market, and increasing, is there any plans at Nokia to support Linux. While I miss experimenting with Beta Lab’s offerings, I find not having a PC Suite the most troubling.

  49. [N95+NSeriesPCsuite+WinXP]
I have tried all the above tricks but cannot get access to SERVICES.
    a) When using cable I get an error (license cannot be read) but shows E: and Map version 0.0.12h.
    b) When using Ram-adapter it starts fine, shows E: and same Map version, but no SERVICES tab!
    My Internet connection is fine.

    Suggestion:
    1) Show the Map version for the downloadable maps. Then you know if you need to update. Or even better check automatically and display message “Your installed maps are up to date” or “Your xxx map needs updating!”
    2) Allow payment from Maploader
    3) Add an UPDATE button to check phone again
    4) Selective deletion of maps from phone
    Thats it for now.

OK Stefan I hope you’re right! I want to buy a Nokia GPS system for my E51. Right now I download the maps on my phone without the maploader, manually. It works well but I think Nokia is not happy with me doing this ;-)

Still it is the only option for me now. I was thinking: what if I buy the Nokia GPS reciver and they block free access to the maps on the Nokia website? Then I can not use the GPS at all! So I was also thinking of switching away from Nokia… But if they do their best to add more mac app’s then I can get more out of my phone!

Peter Almere/Ilgaz: as I mentioned before, there is a mac version of maploader in development. I can not give any details on release date, but it will be “soon”.

  72. I agree with Maxer, Solitaire and Angus about Linux support. Nokia should be desktop operating system independent and not require their users to use specific operating systems to manage their mobile phones. At least all features should be usable directly from phone, but now there’s a situation where some things can’t be done at all unless you have Windows operating system. Shouldn’t be that way.

  74. Hello,
I’m very impressed by the progres realised between Maps 1 and Maps 2. Thanks for the nice et very useful job.
There is although a shadow! The search command, at least for France, is often unable to give answer to an obvious request.

    for instance, with Options-Search-Addresses:
    Country France
    City: Versailles
Street Reine (or Boulevard de la Reine)

No right answer, but a lot with cities without relation with versailles.

    Mais avec
    City 78000

    the right answer is given.

The quick search would be very convenient, but there is so few right answers that I stopped to use it.

My reference is Google Maps which gives the right answer in 98% of cases.

Good job and thanks again for the huge improvements.

  78. Hi,

have installed Maps 2.0, looks great! Still there is one thing…

The info about Camping places (POI) (Accommodations category) is not “very” relevant. With previous version I have checked the Portugal camping sites (holiday trip ;) and there were some. I excpected to get even more places with new version but it doesn’t show any camping place in Portugal :( Neither in France,…

Where can I obtain info about POI coverage per country, or, which countries are covered with Camping info in current version?

  79. Hi
Using Xp SP2 with PC Suite 7_0_7_0 always get error message ” Connection to the map server has been interrupted. Make sure that your internet connection is working and retry. If you are still unable to download try again later” Suffice to say that no problems with Maploader v1.3.15 or utilizing Nokia Software Updater so presumably no issue with internet connection.

  81. Hey.
I’ve just updated both the map loader & Nokia Maps for my N95 8gig. Everything used to work well before but not any more. I cannot get the map loader to recognise that my phone is actually connected to the PC. PC suite recognises the phone is there. I have made sure that the phone is unlocked & I have used maps to establish its cookie. I have tried restarting the computer & rebooting my phone. I have tried reinstalling the map loader on my PC. I have also tried swearing at the computer, the phone & nokia maps.

    Any ideas?

  82. Hmmmm, I’ve just worked it out for myself. Please don’t think me an idiot but I connected in data transfer mode rather than PC suite & it all works fine so far.

    Comment by Aston — July 12, 2008 @ 1:36 pm

  84. First: Very nice application that makes it a lot easier to manage the map data on my N95.

I though have a couple of small bug / issues with the loader:

    1) Licenses: It sees my Berlitz Berlin Guide licens, but I can not download a dataset to use. I lost it during a change of a memorycard.

    2) Licenses: It is very difficult to the expire date, since I am on my laptop in 1024 x 728 (I know it was the resolution Guthenberg used when he proof-read the bibles before printing them:-). There is plenty space left for the text to the left, but I can not move the vertical bar.

    3) Maps: It do shows which maps is already loaded and if there is a new version ready. You have to delete what you got and download a new set. That is not very practical. A “update to latest version”-button would be great.

    4) Voices: The same issue as 3) but with voices.

I hope this will help you in improving a great application.

  85. I have two phones, N82 and e90.
Maploader behaves different connecting to these phones.
With both phones I see the Services tab, but only on N82 can I see the new Walk service. With e90 it shows only Drive and Guides.

Also deleting old map data takes a vey long time.

Running XP, SP3, latest PC Suite.
Connected N82 via bluetooth and the e90 via USB-cable.

BTW, is there a way to download the maps to the PC first, and then copy them to different phones. It looks like maploader does not cache the maps, and downloads again for each phone I need to update.

    /gunnar

    Comment by Gunnar — July 14, 2008 @ 5:44 am

  86. Hello all, some new from the maps team again:

    1. The Vista64 issue is fixed and the release version will support this also.
    2. Eik Kristensen: you can download any guide by selecting it and the clicking “Buy selected”. The guide is downloaded before there is any payment made, so if you already have a license you can skip the payment stage.
    3. We are working on a feature to show/modify currently installed maps.
    4. Gunnar: the content in the shop is depending on what Nokia Maps version you have in your phone. In your N82 you have Maps 2.0 - Walk, Drive & Walk, Guides and Traffic is supported. In older versions, like you appear to have in the e90, only Guides and Drive navigation is supported.

    Best regards,

  87. i’ve just moved to syria. i see that some basic maps are available, but since there is no license that covers syria, i can’t to any navigation.

this is a shame since it’s still useful to use the software as a waypoint navigator if you’re, for example, in the middle of a desert but have a POI to navigate towards… old school GPS style.

by the way, i’ve started recording my tracks while driving around (with sports tracker) to make some maps from. i’m surprised you guys don’t do something similar, since you probably have a few thousand potential mappers walking around that you could collect data from, a la openstreetmap and tomtom’s mapshare?

I have updated my maps with latest Map downloader (v2.02) and receiving following error when the application opens:

Amazingly the map then does pick up my location.

I have also had some instances of:

Is there some incompatability between the new maps and the application?

    Comment by jameal — August 14, 2008 @ 9:05 pm

  125. Hi,

first of all I have to say that I’m rather happy with the maps application, even though I also had some problems discussed above. But there are some thing that could improve the Maps application and the loader so I’ll post them here:

I regularly go on business trips to cities all over the world, where it comes in handy to download the map data for just one city at home before traveling there, to avoid downloads while roaming. This is not really possible because I never know if I have downloaded all data by zooming in, panning around etc.

This way my memory cards gets filled rather quickly, but there is at least now now way to remove only that data after the trip.

Therefore I think the following function would be nice:
Maploader should show the whole earth with a marque tool to select the region you wish to download the maps for. Additionally, the currently downloaded maps (also online downloaded, so not just MAP-loader-history) should also be shown there, to be able to delete them again, may again marque tool and “delete”.

Second issue: When travelling a long track through several countries, it would be nice to route in the map loader and the download just a corridor data of the track to the phone, not all the countries you will pass.

Third issue: routing is not possible when not all maps are on the phone (logical). It is however possible to download the maps online. So why not route on the server (it would be easy to transmit the current position, the destination, and I hope the maps are there…) and download all the required data to the phone, to be able to route there as well.

Forth wish: what about auto-map-update when connecting the phone to the PC, to keep your maps up to date without having to stay online on the phone, or to regularly update the whole country with maploader?

    best regards
    Oliver

You can download all maps straight from Nokia’s own server without installing anything through http://nokiamaps.site666.info. Works with all web browsers on all operating systems.

  129. Nokia commented “We will have Linux/OS X version soon” when I asked the meaning of tying it to Microsoft dotnet 3.0 while Nokia’s biggest problem is windows only software.
So, where is the OS X version? Does Nokia as a multi billion telecom giant feel like they have to be an instrument to Microsoft dotnet 3.x demos?
If people want windows only software and support, they can buy a Windows Mobile handset, believe or not, they work far better than your windows only software.

  135. A Possible Solution on “Waiting for device” Problem

    I’m using Nokia N78.
I think the problem exists because Map Loader is searching for the “cities” folder on the memory card to locate the working directory.

Try the following may solve the problem:
    1) Delete the “cities” folder on your memory card.
    2) Run Nokia Map on your cellphone once, and check that it rebuilds the “cities” folder.
    3) Run the Map Loader on your PC again, now it works.
