Folks in London, Berlin and Madrid: join our Nokia Maps 2.0 car navigation research session in your city (and get some cool stuf

maps_navigation.PNG

Over the next few weeks Nokia Maps team will conduct a piece of research for the Drive car navigation feature within Nokia Maps 2.0. We’re looking for a range of users, from novice to experienced, who are based in London, Berlin or Madrid and have been using Drive within Maps 2.0 actively. Hands-on experience with other car navigation products is a big plus too.

This is how it works:

If you are using the Drive feature actively, and are based in London, Berlin or Madrid, and happen to have some free time in your city during weeks commencing with July 21st and July 28th, this is an opportunity for you to influence the development of the car navigation feature for the next software release.

If you would like to participate in the research session in your city (London, Berlin, Madrid) in person, please fill in the next 5 questions online and leave us your contact details.

We will contact some of you within the next few days to check your availability and invite you for a session in your city. In appreciation for your time and your feedback during the research session, you will receive 100€ / 80£, and some cool Nokia Maps goodies.

Oh, and please spread the word!!

1. Wow - how come the sudden generosity! Rather different to anything that has been offered to beta contributors before! Is this a change of tack, or just a one-off?
Either way, past contributors and winners may feel somewhat badly done by, in comparison.

2. Why just those cities? Why not others?

3. Can you please delete the Flashmap posts - I'd rather we didn't let folk get away with hijacking the beta labs blog to advertise their own product. Out of order behaviour.

I would be very interested in joining the research session, but then I thought "I don't live in any of those cities". Hehe. To bad for me. But then again it would require me to actually buy a license for Nokia Maps. And since I have sworn on eveything in the universe that I will never do so I can never be a part of such a research session. Again, to bad for me. Hehe.

As long as I have my N95 it will annoy me that I could be so stupid to fall for the "free maps trick". Imagine that I actually though that when I spent that amount of money on a high end mobile phone I would get the navigation I thought I payed for -- at least more than a simple three day trial of the, at that time, a pre 1.0 version of Nokia Maps.

So I used up the trial at that time, and couldn't test the 1.0 version, and now I can't even test the 2.0 version.

Thanx for my time...

, Espen

Could you create some kind of POI-package format that is easy for users or firms to compile and share?

I think that it would be handy if I only could click one link on some stores website and it would ask me if i want to add a new poi-group to nokia maps. Then after you install it there's icon and everything ready in their place.

Hi,

I am in Paris and I can tell you Nokia Maps does not calculate routes in an appropriate way in an urban environment like Paris. The time estimation is always totally wrong if the route is within the city (1/3 usually of the real time it takes!), which means the optimization of the route is also wrong.
Tomtom estimates appropriately the time, though, so it must be possible.

I don't know about other cities, but it seems like Nokia Maps would learn a lot from users in Paris.

(and if you want feedback about traffic information, it really does not provide any valuable information in Paris either).

Hey, is there any guide in very detail for Nokia Maps.

2nd, when we activate license for 3 days, we're just a newbie and waste our trial. Don't you think the trial period should be longer or should be "Use" based not "days" based?

why don't you add Iran in your maps. once i traveled there and i found that my Nokia maps did not have the map of Iran. i think its important for a GPS to work EVERY WHERE!! not some places. because there are a lot of maps for me in developed country's like England, France or etc. but where i will get lost and Nokia GPS can be useful in there!!? strange and unknown country's like Iran or etc. you know what I'm saying wright?

Well, it does not start on Nokia E62 and does not uninstall also. I had to install the version 1.02 and make one substitution.

great to hear that research is ongoing for nokia maps. i've been thinking on maps for a while now and there are a few features i think should be considered:

1. allow 'interactive' usage: ie, let the user opt-in to give a basic reason for any of the following events:
a. choosing to re-route on the device (reasons: poor road condition, traffic, other)
b. driving an alternate path than that provided (reasons: poor road conditions, traffic, bad route, other)
c. on observation of erroneous map data (there's no petrol where the map says so) provide 'corrective observations'

2. distribute data from the community observations:
a. online routing could favor the path commonly driven, rather than calculated (this might help avoid excess traffic lights, stop signs, or wear on the vehicle via poorly maintained roads)
b. observation data may be extended to 'subscriptions' for specific types of content: i might join a group of bird-watchers and subscribe to observations of Eagle sightings - perhaps adding on-going logs to specific sites (eagle nest observed by user A; updated by user B observing the nest is destroyed by winds, etc).

3. en-route searching: i've sought this for some time now. on a long drive i've love to be able to ask my n95 to find me a coffee along my path. with community driven observables, this could be extended to offering a stop-over en-route due to being in proximity of a landmark-type you are subscribed to.

thats my 2 cents.

@Geoff:

1. I have always wanted to give more generous prizes (though not too generous not to create badwill and unhealthy competition among the community). One problem has been that arranging *global* competitions and awards with significant monetary value is surprisingly difficult, with different laws, taxation systems, customs, etc. Country-specific prizes/awards are easier.

2. You can't be face-to-face everywhere, have to choose something :)

3. Good point, thanks. Flashmap posts moderated. (I wonder if we could give trusted community members moderator rights to delete inappropriate items, especially now that we are planning to increase the feedback/discussion opportunities)

I also like Nokia and consider them the best variants of all mobile phones. I am looking for a new phone, yesterday searched for something interesting at http://rapidpedia.com/, but did not choose anything so far... Can you suggest anything new and worth buying within $500?
