Beta Labs Survey Results

blresults.jpg

Greetings people! As I promised to Arthur and everyone else interested, I will now present the results of the survey I conducted a while earlier.

Usually such internet surveys attract only a handful responses. You, however, have made me very happy with a total of 650 responses. So, thank you all insanely much for taking part. This really is turning out to be the most significant part of the master of science thesis I am working on. I hope you understand how much this really is appreciated :). Once again, thank you.

The results can be found here as a PDF.

Feel free to comment and to point out further interesting points to study.

The raffle that many of you also participated in will be addressed very soon in another blog post.

Thanks for posting the results!

96% male? Woooow. That is scary.

I guess the bias is pretty much that the percentage of people who generally give feedback is much higher in the survey - where they are giving feedback :D - than in the user base. Considering that I actually find it pretty impressive to have 53% of people in the respondent group who usually don't bother to give feedback but did here.

@Lauri:
By "active users" I refer to those who also have given feedback in the Beta Labs. And I mean the survey was biased towards these active users in the sense that the users less likely to give feedback did not participate in the survey either (EDIT: as often as the ones who give feedback otherwise). Although this is of course to be expected, it is also something to think about. Is it possible that these active contributors differ in some way from those who stay in the background?

@Jennifer:
Good point. The reason I stressed this point in the first place was to emphasize that from the participation pie-chart one can not draw conclusions about the whole community. However, I had not thought about the aspect you proposed, but you're right. Now that you've mentioned it, since I have so many answers from the users who generally do NOT even give feedback, I am able to compare if they differ someway from those who do.

@Solitaire:
The "No participation" represents respondents, who have neither downloaded any applications nor given feedback to Beta Labs. It was necessary to see how many of these we had, since people might have found the survey some unexpected way and wanted to take it in order to be able to take part in the raffle.

Truly fascinating stuff. I find these results (and your early conclusions) truly interesting, and extremely valuable as we further develop the Beta Labs concept, and the whole Nokia co-creation movement.

Thanks Ilkka!!!

Ps. what do you others think about the results?

Cheers for posting the results. Interesting, though not very surprising. One small question concerning a detail on the 3rd slide; how’s the survey biased with larger portion of active users? And following to that question, are active users actually those who only download an application?

Looking forward to see the development based from the results!

Interesting read..
I have a query about the 3rd slide too! Was the 12% "No participation" just those that Downloaded without a response or people who done the survey but have not visited the BetaLabs?
