[Edit: People with RSS-readers: FYI, the post holds a video]
Hello Beta-labbers!
Up here in north of Finland the culture of social interaction and heated discussions is just as rare as seeing reindeers is in Sahara. Well, you might see one, but then you still might wonder if it actually happened or not ;-) To cut the long story short, it goes without saying that us Finns are perceived as just about the most reserved nation on the face of Earth.
On that note, we've been recently thinking of ways to help a shy Finn be more alike the rest of the human breed - expressing themselves, making the best of now and letting everybody know what he or she is all about. As a result of this, we've put together this app that will act as a first chapter of communication without words - but also provoking discussion about you and your friends. Sounds too big of a promise? Well let's look at the Nokia Chat app a bit closer to understand more.
Nokia Chat is a Presence and IM client that integrates to your Contacts Application. It can do automated presence based on your location too. Way it works is that you just save landmarks you want to broadcast and boom - in no time you'll be saying things without typing anything. Do visit our web page to find out more details.
Change your avatar, define details to your personal contact card and let the world find you (there's a setting to define whether you want to be visible in the search or not, that is). What about the provoking discussions promise I gave a few lines back? Well, at least I've found my self starting to comment on a personal status message of my friends more than once. Provoking personal message, the fact of knowing where the other person is or seeing the status can make you seriously ask questions in a spree. Works for the shy Finn, that is.
Another thing worth highlighting is the fact that we love our beautiful smileys. I think highly of our graphical designer for the design that our smileys have - how do you find them? :-)
Invite your friends to take the service in to use as well - we've added an easy way of spreading the word in the app.
What we'd love to know really from you is that how do you find all of this. Does it help you to speak up and express yourself without words? Would you see it completementing your arsenal of messaging tools in your device? Does the app give enough real-estate about you to your closest ones? Did you find annoyances and bugs that we didn't notice in time?
We truly appreciate all of the feedback that you may give us!
On behalf of the developers - we hope you'll enjoy the experience as much as we enjoyed making this,
Kristian Luoma
Product Manager
cheers topyli,
so how do i configure nokia chat to work with my yahoo contacts?
when will the chat for the N78 as beta? he überhaubt for the N78?
Just add them as xxx@gmail.com.
I was wondering the same thing but tried that and it worked.
I'm still hoping someone will figure a way to get the tzones connection.
Maybe Nokia/Symbian could finally support xmpp/jabber instead of wireless village (aka oma imps) and incorporate it into addressbook, messaging and so on? This idea is nice but many people would benefit from native xmpp/jabber support.
The chat app installed on N95 is so useless. How does it work?
Ah, that's where Plazes fits in :)
@Darren: Yes, you'll have to hold on to his multiple IDs in your friend roster I'm afraid.
On Location: Yes, that's basically how it works. Unfortunately it might fail at times to see that you've changed your location (that is if we're unable to pull a location just when the update interval kicks in).
In that case, is it possible to roughly identify the location using the cell network or AGPS if a GPS lock is not possible!?
@Darren and Rob: Yes, these are all valid ideas and items that we have on the table.. can't say more, but stay tuned.
Testing it out now on E71, seems to be buggy but works OK. Avatar setting is hit and miss. Would like more contacts visible on screen at a time, too much scrolling with a huge friends list (yes I'm really popular!! :P)
Homes creen notifications would be great too!
Doesn't seem to handle RotateMe very well. Crashes whenever I turn the phone. Only have an N95-1 so I don't have the official auto-rotation to test with that.
Installation: flawless.
Setup: account registration flawless, when setting up details one crash and some "not supported" messages in the background.
Use: okay, it's an Ovi specific network, so can't really test it right away. Please add user Capzilla to your list if like me you're looking for someone to test this with.
Ironically, I'm mostly interested in testing the presence/location updates. It would be awesome if some Nokia software could periodically ping my location nearby selected landmarks to a custom URL, I'd easily pay for such software to enhance my web presence, hint hint.
"Ironically, I’m mostly interested in testing the presence/location updates. It would be awesome if some Nokia software could periodically ping my location nearby selected landmarks to a custom URL, I’d easily pay for such software to enhance my web presence, hint hint."
Presumably interaction with the likes of MySpace, Facebook and Twitter could be on the cards too!?
"Homes creen notifications would be great too!"
Hear hear!
I'm using a Nokia E51. and as you say this product is tested with the E51 i cant even install the application. every time i try to install the "Nokia_Internet_Services_Suppo rt_Package_1.05" it gives me an error saying "cannot delete file". can you please help me with this?
Hello,
I tried to install the application. It worked but when I try to create a new account I get an error message "not authorized". I'm using a Nokia E66.
Thanks for your help.
@Joseph: N80 and N73 are both S60 3rd Ed. devices. The application supports *currently* only S60 3rd Ed. FP 1 products, from which we've had a chance to test only some properly (list of tested products is mentioned at http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/ chat). For which product runs on S60 3rd Ed. FP 1, see: http://www.forum.nokia.com/dev ices/matrix_s60_3ed_fp1_1.html (it's not guaranteed to work in all of them).
@bob: We second you on the notion of everybody wanting to expose their location. With this application you're not able to share your absolute location automatically (you can, if you hit the "send location", but only as a one-shot, as a manual task). However, what we do offer in the app is sharing of locations you're in as you've labeled them (i.e. the landmark names).
@jonomac: Thanks for the bug report, we'll try to find out what's gone wrong.
@Darren: Thanks, we'll try to repro this as well. Hadn't heard of the RotateMe before - must try ;-)
@Greg: Not sure what has gone wrong, but you might want to try out the link for account creation that jonomac posted (https://account.nokia.com/acct /acctLogin) and re-enter the app on your mobile once you've got your account set-up.
@Adonis: Yes, homescreen notifications, hmmm.. yes, indeed.
Thanks for your reports & comments!
confirmed working on the e71. i don't see the option for voice messages when over a GPRS connection on AT&T.
@ alex tried adding you from stupidgamer but could not find name in search so tried adding you by sending to Lord_Phoenix@ovi.com
also could this be tied with conversations app?
Great first effort guys and way better than the built in IM client.
My initial comments would be;
1) It really does need to interoperate with other services to be truly useful. NOT all my friends are on Nokia phones (shock) or are based from their computers. You can't expect to have 100% of everyone's attention through here.
2) Nice integration with the contact book - just how it should be. BUT, it makes an awful lot of sense to have actually added Nokia Chat people to the contact book, and to have thrown the status indicators inline into the contact book itself - not on a separate tab! For example, if I have a contact (with telephone numbers etc...) I shouldn't have to go to a different tab just to see if they are online.
Simple and IMHO essential for this to actually be usable in the longer term.
Keep it up guys you are getting close here.
Oh yes one more thing, if it was actually integrated with the contact book proper, then you could start to think about how to hook into any of the other social networks as the are all afterall just message streams.
Yeah, Bob is right... your IM chat is very much limited and does not even compares to what Talkonaut can do. I really suggest you to try Talkonaut and learn from their dev team.
Johan.
I cannot install Nokia Chat.(N82)
why do I cannot ?
share my destination database with friends so if i'm in a location i didn't add as a destination, but my friend Bob has, it will show me the name Bob has given to that particular destination.
no notifications when friends change their personal messages either.
This Jabber client looks cool.
+1 for replacing IMPS by XMPP. This might be the occasion to get a better GUI, and perhaps possible display some selected contacts on mini-screens for example.
I'm curious to know how geolocation is published as apparently this app doesn't use XEP-0080: User Location.
BTW, it may be the moment to start developing a new J2ME API for XMPP beside the SIP API for J2ME (JSR 180).
Please Nokia, implement XMPP natively with lots of XMPP extensions !
And I want a Linux based Nokia GSM, also. :)
Test it all these days and I'd like it, some problems with Psiloc Connect! but any way it's working. Missing file transfer feature and something strange with my details it's always empty :-( Any way no problem with Russian language and looks nice. To sum up - Good job!
It doesn't install on N95 firmware 21.0.16
pls i want to chart with my nokia pone 1200
I've just tried removing all the relevant support packages (internet services etc), and re-installing the two sis files above on my N95 8Gb.
I m still unable to connect via either umts or 802.11g
seems everyone is in agreement that nokia chat should support jabber, yahoo, msn ect... for it to be a success?
any official comment from the developers if this will happen in the near future?
installation went relatively smooth on my E90(i had read all about the two files thing, and in fact had an older version of the support file for conversations).
search has all sorts of horrible artifacts on the internal screen.
was recieveing out of memory errors with 40Mb free (or at least that was what was reported by file manager).
Search does not seem to work if other things are open/using memory?
i would also say that with chat open everything else feels rather slugish/slow on occasion (not enough use to figure out what the pattern is)
@Rich - Standard Jabber support is enough, there are transports to other networks on many Jabber servers.
tzones network error here in Miami too.....would be great otherwise.
A similar thing was happening with mobjab because tzones cannot access certain websites so maybe if there was mirror that could be used to access the site it might work. Thats what worked for mobjab.
@Rich - You don't, as long as you can only connect to Nokia's server. It doesn't have transports. If you could connect to any server, all your old Jabber contacts, including transports to other networks, would show up in the client.
www.nokiachat.com is for sale i will buy it before Nokia lol

My case:
I have N95 8GB, 20.0.016.
Challenges:
1. I installed the chat, but it did not appear as an icon to the applications.
2. N95 has this preinstalled chat (in media folder). This is something totally different from the chat we are now testing. Do not confuse these.
This preinstalled chat does not connect and gives error "Palvelimen virhe" which I think is this "Network error" you mention.
Note in this beta chat you do not need to configure servers etc. like in this preinstalled chat.
Solution:
1. After installation of the beta chat access it through your contacts: it is an interleaf one to the right in the contacts menu. After accessing the chat first time the icon appeared into the applications menu.
2. Do not use the preinstalled chat or get these confused.
And I agree with Lars (comment 1) Bliin looks pretty much what I want this location sharing to look like. Even better would be seeing the location for all friends on one page: e.g.
My friend
Having lunch
In Tampere
The location could be a street address or a city. This could be dependent on your own location. People in the same city would show the address. People in other cities would show only the city, with an option to look into more detail in the maps application. But also seeing all your friends on one map is really cool.
For me it would be very nice to have msn messenger support. Everyone i know use msn, noone i know use jabber/google talk.
I'm in no way a fan of m$ but if i want to chat with my friends i need a msn messenger protokol..
Hi Kristian,
Thanks for the comment, and thanks for Nokia Chat! I'm going to try it out!
It now won't connect on my N95. Has been working relatively well now I get "Network Error" every timeI try and connect. Tried a reboot without luck. GPRS is working fine because I can get on the net ok.
!?
I just installed it on my E71. Installation no problem, the program shown on the installation folder. After i click on the program, it just nothing happen.
Hi!
Unfortunately from the unexpected reason the creation of new accounts is forbidden. So, please be patient.
All existing accounts can use the system as normally.
We shall inform, when the creation of new accounts will be available.
Cheers
tried installing it in my 6110 navigator but wont install after downloading. tried both ways through the website and through the data cable
How about exchanging Cell ID data over XMPP? I just blogged about the idea here: https://stpeter.im/?p=2231
just wondering what everyones top 3 wish list is for this app? mine would be,
1 A pop up on the standby screen for incoming IM's just as with sms alerts.
2 log in with existing xmpp accounts instead of signing up to ovi
3, msn/yahoo support. (i know yahoo are talking about xmpp but no one knows when, if ever this will happen)
the app installs fine and registration has worked as well but i also get this network error message no matter wat connection i try can anyone help please?
ok...looks like the support package was updated to V1.05...I reinstalled both items and now it works.
The only catch is that it doesn't work off T-mobile tzones for me...it only works off WLAN...nice app and I am able to talk to my gtalk friends as well
Only gripe I have is that I can't see my friends location unless they actually send it to me.
I've been hoping for native XMPP support on Nokia phones for a long time. More apps is not what I'm after, it's more ways to communicate with people. Why not add XMPP to the native, mature Chat application? If you must insist we need another application, let's at least make it a real Jabber client. chat.ovi.com can stay there, and be default, but why shouldn't the application be useful for existing XMPP users too? I'm not going to make all my friends add another instance of my mugshot into their roster windows.
As it is, this adds no value to my experience with my Nokia device.
If someone send message include link there is only 2 options copy whole message or open link to default browser. It will be nice if there can be option to copy only link and then i can paste it to opera mini or what ever browser
How do i add and chat with my friends on gtalk?
I dont find any documentation as to where I can do this.
I am using E51
@Rich:
You say "seems everyone is in agreement that nokia chat should support jabber, yahoo, msn ect… for it to be a success?"
No. - I don't think this is the agreement here. Full XMPP/Jabber support would be enough and probably even better as it reduces the complexity of the software.
Google already supports XMPP.Yahoo's Scott Dietzen talked about replacing their proprietary protocol with XMPP only recently. AOL (AIM/ICQ) experiments with XMPP since early 2008. - I don't see why Nokia should put much effort in strengthening the legacy protocols now.
I think the agreement is that this whole thing will fail miserably if it Nokia forces its users to connect to the ovi.com server instead of allowing them to use their existing account.
Hey everyone,
First off: Sorry for terrible latency in responding in your comments - the holiday season has been causing some delays for me in following the thread.
Secondly, we really appreciate all the feedback received and are taking the problems reported seriously - investigations are on-going.
@Rich: Yes, using Cell ID is a natural fit for our purpose. We're looking in to this in our next release.
@Mike M: In relation to Voice Messages, be sure to try to send it to another user of Nokia Chat. The feature is not a standard XMPP feature, and hence that will work only from a Nokia Chat to another Nokia Chat.
@BarneyC: Thanks for the encouraging comments and visions - I have to agree with your opinions.
@yukotan: We've confirmed it to work on 11.0.117 and 20.0.032 versions of N82, could you specify the SW version that you have? Go to the idle screen and type *#0000#. Thanks!
@Winura: Sorry to hear about the problems with E51, We didn't notice anything in our tests. Can you get me the SW version you have?
@Darren: Green key for sending messages - not a bad idea, thanks!
@Stefan Constantinescu: Good ideas, both the friend message notification and the location database sharing. We'll take them to consideration.
@rewben: Problem you mention with N82 is something we haven't encountered. Again, would you be kind enough to report the SW version too? Thanks!
@kael: Actually, we do use the XEP-0080 for sharing the exact location. We do have a capability check to regocnize the other end capabilities for showing the information.
@RTmemeber: Thanks, this is clearly a problem with localization, we'll fix this.
@dayan: What is the error message you're getting with the Nokia 6110 Navigator of yours?
@Alex: Thanks! File transfer feature.. yes, we need to do that for you soon.
@Baumi, wagnerw: It seems that the network may have an effect on the "network error".. care to share that which network are you running on? Country/Operator? Then we can investigate further.. thanks!
@ayman: I totally understand your frustration for two installation packages. Unfortunately it is a compromise we had to make for Beta release due to shared libraries between certain apps.
@-=[HiskiBoy]=-: Accessing the links in the chat, yes, we acknowledge this problem and will be addressing this issue.
@JohnDoe: Thanks for very well constructed feedback - the good and the bad experiences. Your file transfer support request is heard, we'll work on this.
@Ian and others having problems with E90 compatibility: These problems are unfortunate to hear about, however, we've yet to properly test the E90. We'll look in to this in a bit.
@Rich, topyli: I'm guessing this is what you anticipated.. but all we can say at the moment is "no comments" for the topic of Jabber and other IM networks being supported.
Again, thanks a lot for all of your feedback/comments!
BR, Kristian
I use only vibra alert when i'm at work. Why nokia chat will not give vibra alert? It will vibra when i use some ringtone not only vibra. My phone is Nokia 6120 classic (B03 01) with firmware 5.11 RM-243
I like it in a way. Easily integrated, nice UI, simple.
At last (!) XMPP. Because what's the point of showing my presence and location if I can't show it to my existing contacts?
And that's exactly where your implementation doesn't live up to the grand idea:
Why would I expect everyone to add me as "myself@ovi.com" yet again? They already have me on their roasters. They won't go through the hassle just because I want to play with a new toy.
So:
*Please* make this work with just any existing jabber account. (This includes publishing location information via XEP-0080.) There is no reason whatsoever to restrict the use to ovi, because none of my contacts will switch there, anyway, and the S60-userbase is far too small to form new networks. (At least I don't know many people who use S60 devices, let alone comatible S60 devices.)
I promise I'll love you if you do this. ;)
Numerous memory problems while setting up and connecting to chat using my N95.
Have got past activation stage, but became stuck in the settings mode, was able to turn off the phone but not switch to other apps or close the settings screen, possibly due to memory issues?
Just also wanted to say there is a problem with a link when trying to access Chat from my Nokia Account Page online ie this page
https://www.chat.nokia.com/sp/ SLO/SOAP
does not work when selected from this page
https://account.nokia.com/acct /account/index.html
Many thanks.
Other than having your location there is not a great deal more than other applications out there. In fact http://www.talkonaut.com/ supports Jabber, Google Talk, ICQ, MSN, AIM and Yahoo networks both for chatting and voice calling.
No more new accounts - it uses users existing accounts and loads all your contacts after the first connection.
This also allows you to talk to contacts, Free using Wifi hotspots.
Not everyone wants their location public...
Did not work with the Nokia N73.
Neither did it work for a Nokia N80
Congrats guys, this is a huge step forward from the useless unused Wireless Village client. Open protocols like XMPP are the future and it looks like you've spotted this.
Now, if only I could use my normal JIDs and run it on my E61 I'd be well happy.
i like this but it needs yahoo/MSN compatibility too?
also wouldn't using cell Id's for location be better than the battery draining gps (or give the option to use both)? apps such as smart profiles use this technique and it works great.
also i don't like having to scroll between sent and received messages? can't we have them in one window like all other IM apps?
Looks like it's working, but... could someone add me to test it?! It's Lord_Phoenix add me please :-)
Oh, right, I'm using Nokia N95-1 v.21.0.016
Hey all,
Some of you probably have found your way to Darla Mack's post about how to configure a PC IM client to run on our service. More details here: http://www.darlamack.com/darla mack/2008/07/using-nokia-cha.h tml
We'll put the official how-to-configure guides for Psi, Adium, etc. clients later during next week in more detail.
@kael: Yes, we are using XEP-0080... And I did read your article - indeed will be interesting to see what we can do with the location feature later on.
@Ralph: Can't promise a date, but we're working on it.
- 222 bytes / stanza is too much.
- same gizmo beta labs projects, almost same faults, nothing changed but editing and keep conn alive
> every time i try to install the “Nokia_Internet_Services_Sup port_Package_1.05"
> it gives me an error saying “cannot delete file”
Have you been using old versions of Conversation, Gizmo, or Windows Live? Old Nokia Internet/Contact Services support packages might conflict with this one.
Try uninstalling the old support packages before installing the new one (1.05) and the actual Nokia Chat app.
Works fine with E51, expect battery consumption is huge. I have 5-6 chat windows open and battery drains in abt an hour this happens also with N95).
Sending voice message just gives 0% completed but nothing happens.
I keep pressing the green (Answer) button to try and send a message, as you can for SMS, could this be added?
Also, link to profiles (General, Silent etc). I keep having to edit the preferences depending on where I am!
after 12 hours no sound or vibra notification, no matter the phone profile. Any idea why?
Nice new application. Works together with Conversation. Although I have the typical other messengers, I will not miss it anymore - works good with friends, easy to stay in contact, show collegues or friends where you are, and then go there by Maps.
Works fine on two N95s. Putting an avatar in still has a bug. Putting already saved pictures in doesnt work. Making a new picture worked just once by chance with one phone, with the other not!
@Stefan Const,
Notifications are there, you have to put a loader and better sound in!
What i would like to see is a position updater widget on my own website, so i can show people where i am. And i can't add friends (now i'm lonely) on my N82, get code -15 error. Any idea?
two more things:
- not possible to change the language,
so you can not chat with someone in Germany and someone somewhere else and switch the language for T9 fast.
- often if I write to someone and if he writes back, it appears in a second window
@Chris Si: I get notified of new instant messages, not when my buddies change their personal message.
I've put together a little proof-of-concept robot that uses the "Send | My location" capabilities of Nokia Chat to return a list of nearby Plazes; see instructions for trying it out at:
http://ruk.ca/article/4915
I've also documented some of the internals of Nokia Chat as regards its use of XMPP:
http://ruk.ca/article/4910
(neither of these is a Nokia or Plazes official project, just some weekend hacking).
I'm curious about this development! hmmm the potential to intergrate instant messaging, short messaging service, email, converations, location based services, voice chat, video chat, voip, contacts hmmmm
i currently use the im client with the mobjab service and chat to all my msn friends! i actually prefer im in this way over msn live!
I think nokia chat takes symbiab in completely the wrong direction! I was hoping for better "glue" to integrate the curent capbility of the apps we have!
you have given me yet another app and yet another service to register on and request all my friends move over to! nah
nokia pleeeease capture my imagination . . . share your plans to make all your apps integrate before apple gets there 1st (remember os and apps is their real stronghold)
last comment . . . you graphic for this app is a map with lots of friends/contacts dotted about!
can this app actually deliver that?
sorry kristian, i forgot
the essence of my entry was . . .
if ALL you dev teams do not com together on such an initiative i think the future of mobile devices will rest not with a company that started life as a handset king but one that started life as a software giant , aka google, apple microsoft!
if however you think these guys not worthy competition then continue on your current path and we can review the situation in 12 or 24 months!
In regards to post No.1, Bliin is very comprehensive to say the least!!
Well its a nice app.
How about givinga feature to save the chat history.
Also the connectimng ime is to much
it takes forever to login. (arnd 10 15 secs)
I use E51 and airtel mobile office in mumbai.
Also it eats up a lot of memory and slows down the contacts application.
so thats a basic problem.
If its taht slow and eats up memory better to separate it from the contacts application rather than slow up the basic application.
also blinking the notification light on a new message.
ability to change the notifications
stop vibration and sounds.
better copy paste functionality is welcome.
all in all its a great app witha afew glitches
Comment by Sukumar — August 11, 2008 @ 2:58 pm
when entering 2 worded answers for favourite football team i get the following error: qtn_friends_error_invalid_secu irtyanswer
i aggree with chuck,
the built in IM feature has a nicer feel, getting a pop up when a new message arrives just like a new email, sms, mms as with the built in IM (via mobjab) is far better than having to find the right page within the app?
the other serious problem i have is, after a full charge and the handset left on standby i only get 5.5 hours of use before the handset starts bleeping saying the battery is about to die!! this makes the app unusable? i charge my N95 once a day and often in the evenings i have VoIP connected along with Mobjab. even so i get a days use out of the phone
I've retired the operating proof-of-concept Nokia Chat bot for Plazes, but I've released the PHP source code:
http://websvn.reinvented.net/w svn/Plazes/NokiaChat/plazes_xm pp_daemon.ph...
...so you can create one of your own.
I try to use with Nokia E90. Too many bugs.
On internal display don't show users nik - only little green round.
Don't saved my personal information between sessions.
It's main errors.
I also get the "network error!" on my E90. I try to use "Elisa Internet" access point in Espoo, Finland, in Elisa network. Browsing and email do work on the very same access point, so it does get connectivity. But, Chat does not work.
br. Martti
I never succeeded in setting up the built-in chat client of my Nokia E90. Thus I installed Nokia Chat and gave it a try just to find out that I'm now stuck with xxx@ovi.com!?
Landmark broadcasting appears to be slick, but only if there is someone listening... I'm afraid I'll have to abandon Nokia Chat for the time being and look elsewhere instead. Having removed all Nokia Chat files and cancelled my Nokia Account, I'll give http://www.talkonaut.com/ a try (thanks to bob).
Ok, I gather that ovi.com (aka Nokia) is up to challenge Google. I do wish you luck, but I doubt that it will able team up with Google Apps - at least for the next 3 years or so. My mobile must integrate with my work (and I've chosen Google to centralize my documents and communication tasks) - not the other way around.
@Kristian
I discovered that you were using XEP-0080.
+1 for XMPP PEP CellID. This would allow to easily get pubsub based location-aware content delivery services without GPS.
And I think Nokia and other manufacturers should really publish a new JSR for an XMPP J2ME API (based on JSR-186 and JSR-187).
I installed this to my E90 a few days after the latest firmware upgrade, and...... nothing! The screen flickers once, but nothing happens. The phone doesn't crash, and all other applications still work, but this one does absolutely nothing! Must try harder Nokians x
Nokia Chat's now installed in my E71.
Some bad and good things based on my personal end user experience listed below:
Bad things at the moment:
- After installing both SIS-files reboot was needed. Otherwise unable to start chat application (nothing happens)
=> Not critical in my opinion.. maybe others don't have similar problems..
- Packet switched connection (3G/2G...) remains open based on icon in idle screen after quitting the program. Need to close it down from connection manager.
=> Not dangerous but annoying... please fix this!
- If trying to restart application after running it once (without rebooting the device) it randomly either works, reboots the device or doesn't do anything - not 100% reliable yet at least with my firmware (100.07.76, 08-06-2008) but that's beta afterall
=> Sometimes happen, sometimes not (mostly works)
Good things:
- Nice to finally have XMPP based IM application from Nokia
- Location integration works nicely with my E71, which is clearly differentiator in this application to other IM applications
- Easy and innovatively easy way to move between contact book and chat application. Seems to integrate into contact book more tightly so that it is clearly different from other IM applications
- Amount of data that is transferred when application is active seems to be rather small that is good... I do have totally unlimited data package without any artificial limits but in case someone doesn't
Further ideas:
- File transfer support (even for bigger files such as ppt/word - many Megabytes) with background mode
- Video and Picture sharing support (could be done based on file share)
- Live video sharing to OVI service with location data
... which results question: Has anyone tried www.qik.com !?
That is real hard core social networking that sets benchmarks to the rest of these kind of services (excluding the dynamic location part).
Qik naturally allows one to create live video share streams from S60/Windows phone and show those in qik site but what is even more intresting is that it enables one to show own live streams as embedded into personal webpage (similar to e.g. OVI flash ticker can be used to show pictures from own OVI share public channel).
Therefore other users browsing my webpage can use the embedded flash player to see live stream bcasted from my phone and even comment that during the stream !!! Try Your personalized iptv "show"...
Why the 2 separate installation files?? It is these kind of small details that make or break for first time users = the mass!
Please make it one simple installation file.
I had a problem with my E71. It crash with my contact and make my phone restart all the time.
My firmware is 100.07.76 (08-06-2008) RM-346 Nokia E71-1 (26)
Do anyone can help? Or fix the problem?
Have been using this off and on for a week now...
Have been finding that its becoming quite resource hungry. Flicking through the menus seems to bog down when Chat is running.
Have left it in offline mode for the time being.
Hi!
Now you are able to create new accounts.
Thanks to be patient! Stay tuned!
Cheers
Hey,
We are having a short service break at the moment. Thanks for understanding!

installed on my n82 firmware 20.0.062.. I can click the icon, but it does not start.
Hope the battery issue can be fixed. Maybe apple does have a good idea when not allowing apps running in the background.
Full integration with contact list would be prefered..
can we add ppl from other site's like msn or yahoo etc?if so how? Thanks
Hi,
I've just installed the 2 .sis onto my N95 8Gb / v20, but am getting "Network error" when trying to logon with an existing Nokia account (which works).
This occurs over both corporate WLAN, as well as via UMTS. In the latter case I'm in coverage, have large data allowance, no port blocking, and other phone apps are working fine.
16:16 GMT+1 .. temporary outage? (id is planetf1)
Hey!
So, it seems to keep telling me 'Not Authorised' when i go to make a new account, not good!
What do i do to fix it?
oops, okay, just realized what was wrong! Its cool!

Hey,
We're back in business. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi,
It doesn't seem to work through an http connection with proxy, which is the only type of connection I can use with the unlimited data plan from my carrier. I'm not the only one in this case, which reduces the number of people who can actually use the application else than through wifi...
"Unable to install" on N95-1
@post#67: I also get a "Network Error" message when i try to connect. Installation and registration was no problem but i'm not able to go online with nokia chat. I tried both, wlan and gprs but had no luck. Internet's working fine on the mobile.
It'd be nice if Nokia handsets supported the JSR 186: Presence and the JSR 187: Instant Messaging.
@Robert: Have you installed internet support package before with another SW (i.e. Gizmo)? You may want to try to remove the internet support package, and re-try after that.
Поставил себе на N95 и жене на N95-2. Вполне доволен работой. Для бетки очень грамотно и практически нет багов. Надеюсь в последствии добавите локализацию.
I have the "network Error" at my work when I try to login. Here we only have access to port 80 . The registration completed successfully.
Can someone tell me which ports Nokia Chat uses?
Thanks!
I also have the Network Error issue. Using a N95 8GB, v20.0.016 firmware. Internet works fine for all other applications, like n-gage, web, etc.
Hope someone knows a way out.
Thanks!
on my e71 the support package on my phone is 1.05 but on the website it only has 1.01. Should i overwrite the newer file with an older file?
I am also recieving network error on t-mobile tzones in chicago, il
IMHO: Nokia should learn also from fring
can't install on Nokia E90 , error message, 'unable to install'. any ideas ?
With my N95:
1. Does not connect through wlan (Network error). There should not be any firewall between. Does Chat use some special ports? If so, can it be changed to some normal port?
2. Avatar change-attempt -> not enough memory
3. Where does location data go? How? (=Is it stored on Nokia DMZ servers unencrypted or something like that) What I need is a way to show my location on a web page to those who are not using the Nokia ovi.
4. Does Chat locator work with Maps 1.x? By the way: That Nokia Maps 2.x is useless crap compared to others (Google Maps, mgmaps etc.). (For example: when I last tried to find a local health center, according to Nokia the only available medical service in Finland was provided by local barber shops and massage-providers, nearest taxi was available in Stockholm, Sweden and so on. Also the routing system suggested that instead of going 4 kilometers on a highway I was already using, I should drive about 20 km on backroads (the highway-setting was correctly set) No reason to pay for bullshit, when you can get correct information from others.)
What I need is a way to show my general location on a map to selected persons who are using computers (linux&windows).
The selectable favorite places is a useful innovation, but that's about the only good thing in Nokia Chat.
the network error message has now gone and i can now login, after log in i get a messages sayin CONTACTS:FEATURE NOT SUPPORTED does anyone no wat this means please? And can anyone tell me how to add contacts from msn please? Thank u
What is that Call status?
SETTINGS --> PESENCE -> CALL STATUS
Oh i get... It Change my status On the phone. Nice :-)
No support for N78, 6220 Classic and a whole bunch of S60 3rd Edition FP2 devices. Thanks for dropping us "early adopters" out of this :(
Interesting - I installed it on my E61i. Installation went without a hitch, but it has no icon in the grid, just text. It also refuses to start without telling me that my phone is incompatible.
Any chance to get a notification during install phase if the phone is not compatible? This is a bit confusing...
(Documentation? Why would I read documentation? ;-)
Am I able to use my Google Talk id as a login? Currently talking to a friend via Chat who is on Google Talk but he also plans to use Chat eventually too. Will I need two ids for him!?
Thanks Hugo, I inserted a link to the Nokia Chat page in the post and included a short note in the beginning about the video. We need to look into how to make the video show up in the RSS feed.
@Darren: You're able to chat indeed with your friends who are using GTalk, but you're not able to log in to GTalk from Nokia Chat. The service expects you to create a Nokia Account and use that for logging in to the service.
So if your friend switches over to use Nokia Chat, he'll have to create a Nokia Account too. Then you can add his new account to your friend roster as well, and you're able to chat with him (with either account). Hope that clarifies a bit.
@Janne: Sorry to hear about the mishap in E61i. As the list in http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/ chat implies, we've yet to test it using E61i.
Thanks for the feedback!
@Kristian: so I will indeed have to hold multiple contact IDs for his GTalk and Chat logins.
On Location, does the GPS try and connect according to the broadcast interval, ie if I have the interval set at 20 minutes it will attempt a lock every 20 mins? If it can't get a lock will it default to the previous? if I manage to get between locations in that period will it fail to realise I have moved?
Sorry for the multiple questions, quite keen o this app though!! D
Very interesting. I've tried instant messaging from mobile phones for ages but never had a great experience:
- most third-party applications simply do not integrate with the telephone, especially in the background functionality and notification areas.
- Sony Ericsson had a decent native client, but there were no stable service providers.
- integration with other networks (MSN etc.) are a must.
Will try out the software now and will send some feedback when I've used it!
@Ben V.
cheers, thats great news. obviously the idea scenario would be for all the IM operators to agree on a standard format, it would be great for there customers and great for the likes of developers with apps such as the nokia chat. :)
Installed and uninstalled again.
Think you should for instance take a look at Bliin.com and see how this type of accplication can be made.
There is nothing unique at all in this application
Looks like you forgot the link to the application itself! chat
http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/
Also, the video doesn't show up in the RSS feed, and if I hadn't come to the page I wouldn't have seen it, so maybe mention it in text as well, or try and get a placeholder in.
Just installing it, the first downside I can see is it's *yet another* IM network that will need friends adding again: it's already quite fragmented with MSN, Google Talk, AIM etc etc etc. Of course, the difference here is that it's on the phone, but it'd be good to be able to use the existing IM networks.
NETWORK ERROR -- Any news on this at all? Can you provide any PD assistance. Is there additional logging that can be enabled?
I am trying to run this on a supported device (N95 8Gb) with an unrestricted 3G data connection, and also on wifi. I've also tried reinstalling all components to no avail.
Finally I've created a second account - again making no difference.
I can see a data connection being attempted (either wifi or 3G data symbols show on handset).
Unfortunately "network error" by itself isn't that informative - could be any (presumably) of
- dns failure
- unable to connect
- some app protocol mismatch
etc.
Just to confirm - I am using the "new" application accessed through contact as you describe, but thanks for pointing that out.
Hi,
I have a problem with Nokia Chat on E71 (European/ Polish version). After installing, launching it has no effect - nothing appears on screen. Only after off/on reset, running Nokia Chat results in Contacts application being launched in a background - and that's all.
I removed all other software that I thought might interfere with it (IM+, fring) and did even soft reset, to restore default settings, but it didn't help. Phone isn't customized by any mobile operator.
Sad thing - it worked OK on my E51, but now I don't have an access to my account. Any ideas what else can I try to run it?
Thanks,
Bartek
Those getting 'unable to install', install the nokia support file. prior to installing the nokia chat program.
Да этой аськой только в России и пользуются. Вообще, тут на английском пишут, воспользуйтесь Google Translate ( http://translate.google.com ) для перевода с русского на английский.
- overall feedback: great work! There are not many mobile apps that just work, but at least the first time user experience was a positive one! Status bar icon for unread chat entries is also a good one!
- If gprs-connection is lost it seems that chat app will not try to restore connection automatically (or it waits for a long time)
- in the settings it's not apparent login on startup means. Perhaps it's automatically login when phone starts (would be important feature) or when app starts. It's quite difficult to use chat app without logging in
- would be nice to use other xmmp accounts as well such as google talk
- for testing it would be nice if one could add himself as a contact (or for those without any contacts :)
- it's nice to have an integrated UI. However, for a first time user it's not easy to understand that chat lives inside contacts application and is therefore not available in task switcher. Also because of this at least I were first a bit wondering what can I do with the contacts (as I could not add them as first or do any similar actions). Separate app would be easier.
- it would be nice to know if connection to Nokia servers is encrypted or not. Possibility for encryption would be important
Hi Nokia Team
On my Nokia N-95 I dont find the regular IM client. Is it possible to download the IM client from your website? I mean can nokia provide the regular IM client sis file?
Any pointers would be really appreciated.

В общем если знаете, или перевели, то смотрите какая есть возможность - у Вас чат-jabber. На него можно повесить транспорт аськи.

Hi nokia team
after trying your nokia chat app and others got the following feedback:
I think installating google maps with latitude (location sharing) would be a better idea for location sharing. frankly works far better then nokia chat app. there is no need to register an account with them as compared to registartion with ovi.com and the location detection works great as compared to nokia chat app.
for chatting the imps client would be the best bet as compared to xmpp based chat app like nokia app.
i think poster "Chuck" had commented wisely during the initial phases. this has indded become true now.
high time you really work up from your slumber and forcing your users to use/install apps like this one. I still am using nokia...your handsets are great....but thats it....guess need to look at google to innovate in the mobile app space.
How is does this software relate to Friend View?
Ok, never mind. I just forgot to install damn Internet Support Services.
Regards,
Bartek
Да... Мне действительно близка обсуждаемая тема! Даже грустно как-то :(
An afterthought for Nokia Team,
If you continue to "innovate" in the mobile internet space the way you are doing currently days are'nt far when the mobile phone hardware would have the same place as computer hardware has as of now.
google/apple would have their mobile OS running on your mobile phones. android on a nokia handset doesnt seem 2 far fetched...isnt?
and you would be forced to change your tagline from "connecting people" to "nokia inside"
I have installed this Nokia Chat application in my Nokia E61i. Its works very well, but I am having a problem with vibrator in my device now. Now if I receive any phone calls, vibrator doesn’t work because of this application but vibrator works only in this application. I have uninstalled this application then vibrator again works very well but when again I installed this application, vibrator doesn’t work. I have installed and uninstalled this 3 to 4 times and I tested. This is the stupid thing in this application.

Any news on support for this on the N96 with firmware 12.045, which explicitly contains a fix for nokia chat?
Is it ok to install the N95/8Gb version (_31) or do we need a new build?
Да уж, автор блога на самом деле добрый и отзывчивый человек. Спасибо :)
