Configuring Nokia Chat to your favourite IM client on PC

Guest blogger Kristian Luoma, product manager of Nokia Chat
Most of us prefer using a PC keyboard over mobile device keyboard when we're sitting next to our PCs while attending a blazing conversation. To make the most out of Nokia Chat while chatting - we now provide some simple instructions on how to configure your favourite IM client on PC to run on Nokia Chat.
Generally, the following instructions will apply to most XMPP-supporting IM clients, in case your favourite XMPP compatible IM client wasn't featured in our guide:
1. Create Nokia Account in https://account.nokia.com/acct/register
2. Configure your account with the following details:
- Server Address: chat.ovi.com
- Server Port: 5223
- Enable "Force old SSL" or "Legacy SSL" [Edited 5.8.2008]
3. Log-in with your Nokia Account
Read more for how-to configure with different clients.
Note that in some cases, when you're behind a firewall, you may need to configure proxy settings too. For instructions and details of how that can be done, please refer to the IM client's web page for help on how-to and contact your local network administrator for network specific details.

Thre real question is: does it work the other way round: use Nokia Chat with your own Jabber server?
perfectly works with my N800 :)
maybe add some screenshots to the description above?
www.nokiachat.com is for sale i will buy it before Nokia lol
Works even with Apple iChat in Mac OS X 10.5.
Just use the port 5223, use SSL, use the ovi chat server and then the ovi.com login (using the Jabber account setup wizard). Easy setup. Adium IS NOT REQUIRED for ovi.com on Mac.
Are there plans to streamline this process so that:
(1) A PC or creating another Ovi account is not needed;
(2) The ability to add IM contacts from other accounts is just a matter of adding the contact (User flow looks like: Menu > Add Contact > insert IM name > choose IM service > attach to existing phone contact (yes/no) > Chat to contact
Thanks in advance; I do like the app though.
Aah..
This just my big dream..
I hope there is a external Wi-Fi/WLAN antenna that can connect to nokia phone mini usb.. And a driver kit software for the phone to known the external Wi-Fi/WLAN hardware..
I hope it happen to my Nokia 5700.. Please Nokia, make my dreams come true..
Ah ya, not just Wi-Fi/WLAN, I hope for GPS antenna too..
Ah ya, Nokia Chat doesn't support chat rooms???
Honestly, I haven't been a big chatter since the mid 90's. Over the years, multiple standards and protocols have fragmented the communication method. Different providers developed competing services and messengers. It just became too much to deal with. I could sometimes need 3 and 4 windows to talk to all my friends.
Now, Nokia comes along and adds to the mix. Don't get me wrong, this app and service is great. But Nokia already has multiple chatting interfaces built into most new devices. It could've better served users to combine the XMPP, IMPS, and other chat protocols into one application. The Nokia Chat service could've been a registration requirement for this app, building the popularity of the app based on installations and accounts.
To me, chatting is so 1990's. Smartphones have SMS, MMS, email, VOIP, and even video calling. Globally, these communication standards are readily available. The chatting standards are, too, but mostly in separation.
I'm looking for more standardization in chat communication. Why didn't Nokia integrate this into the long in the tooth Beta Labs Gizmo client, a promising but underpublicized app that integrates beautifully into the device's UI?
I don't want to have 3 or 4 apps to chat. Nokia Chat is great, and a good idea, but if it must separate itself from other chat interfaces, it just further fragments communication, and will turn some users off. I want a single interface for chatting, combining Nokia Chat, MSN, AOL, Yahoo, Jabber, ICQ, Gizmo5, and others together. I also want support for file sharing between common network users, and a way to use my Palringo and Fring VOIP credits.
I appreciate this initiative. Nokia Chat will grow. But let's make the phone the actual interface, not just the platform. Nokia knows all of it's users chat. Integrate a multiplatform chat interface that'll require one login to all alternative communication tools, and, with Nokia's growing user base, it immediately becomes the app of choice.
Nokia, bring REAL chat back. Your competition isn't other mobiles, but the PC. The PC has this type of application. Meet the PC standard instead of creating a new mobile standard. Nokia's smartphones are what PC's have become. Now they must behave like it and bring the communications tools full circle. Otherwise, Nokia Chat will be a niche app, ignored for the likes of Palringo and Skype, and Fring. Don't compete, conglomerate. Work with these developers to allow them to continue making revenue somehow, like integrating a way to buy and use their VOIP credits. The integration into the Contacts app is just a good start. I want more.
Thanks for the "how-to" :D
All i've got to do now is add Nokia chat to my Pidgin coup (i've got all my IM's through it!!) :D:D
well at least it's ONE product that runs on Linux :D:D
If Nokia Chat supported XEP-0146: Remote Controlling Clients, it'd be possible to change the status from Psi.
BTW, the OVI Jabber accounts and the OVI Share credentials are not the same. I created an account on the Jabber server and then had to create another account for OVI. This is going to create complicated situations.
I think it should be better to tie both databases credentials ASAP, otherwise it might turn into a huge mess.
@iChat user: Hey, spot on, we're compatible on all XMPP enabled IM clients. We just wanted to take a snapshot of some of the most popular clients out there.

server-to-server works neatly... so this is great!
Since there is no other feedback form but one about site experience, i ask one question here:
Why Nokia PC Suite does not willingly (or otherwise) sync calendars with anything else than Lotus and Outlook? Very many of us are using something else, like Sunbird (or Thunderbird & Lightning) or desktop calendars. They all usually support at least iCal. Why doesn't PC suite?
Now if i want to sync my data, i have to put it to google calendar and use 3rd party (or 4th party?) software to sync it with my phone.
I'll gladly hear all the arrangements that other readers have done to sync their calendars.
from CNPDA
instead of allowing other IM clients to open up Nokia Chat list, can Nokia chat support gateway so I can view my MSN / gtalk list?
Nokia Chat idea is good (similar to iChat from my iMac), but not all my friends have Mac or Nokia so they don' thave ichat / nokia ovi a/c. They usually on MSN / gtalk. Should Nokia Chat allows communications to MSN via Jabber? I can do it in iChat, why not Nokia Chat?
The connection „chat384513688532338663“ couldn´t be established, because the server couldn´t be reached. I´ve configured it with iChat under OS X. Presencestatus is available, but not possible to chat.
This works OK from the N810 and I can text chat with clients on my Jabber server. In answer to Louis it should be possible to text chat with GTalk users
However, I've still not found a way to do video chat from the N810, what am I missing? I can do it Mac-Mac using iChat and to PC users via AIM. Does anyone know how this can be achieved? It was one of the selling points of the N810.
Вот так,несогласен с предыдущими высказываниями
) Bye
I’ll share it on Twitter.
chat.ovi.com:5223 doesn't seem to work anymore?
The real question is: does it work the other way round: use Nokia Chat with your own Jabber server?
