We at the Nokia Photos team have been busy working on the upcoming release 1.5. Nokia Photos is a PC application that you can use to manage and transfer your personal media to and from your Nokia device. Here are some new things to try in Nokia Photos 1.5 beta:

Nokia Photos works with all your personal media
Nokia Photos 1.5 can now import pictures and videos from any S60 device, digital camera, memory stick as well as from your hard disk. If you have an Nseries phone, you can do even more with Nokia Photos: for example, you can load your device with tons of content from your PC. Nokia Photos converts videos to the right format so that they play in your device. It can also shrink pictures to the screen resolution so that they do not take up too much space on your phone. This way you can carry thousands of pictures with you all the time. Newer devices like N78 and N96 understand tags, albums and other organization in Nokia Photos and display them in the Photos application on the phone.

Location and geotagging
You can visualize your geotagged pictures on the new map view. You can also manually position any picture or video on the map to geotag it. We use technology from Nokia Maps so you can do the same things that are familiar to you in your phone like searching for cities, addresses and places of interest as well as saving your favorite places.

Nokia Photos works better with Ovi
Apart from the evident Ovi look and feel, you will find that it is much easier to setup Nokia Photos to share your media on Ovi. And, of course, Ovi can understand your geotagged pictures and videos and show them on a map if you choose so.

We look forward to read your feedback. Please let us know what you think of the new map view. Is it easy to use? How could we improve it? What other things would you change in Nokia Photos?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!!

On behalf of the Nokia Photos team,

- Julio

Rainer@10. -- The text and multimedia messages are visible on the Timeline, just like in Lifeblog.

The default location for images and videos are My Pictures and My Videos, but you can easily change that if you wish. Just go to:
Tools > Settings... > Synchronisation > Location of new files on PC

1. I know Eseries Gallery dont have Albums so i cant send an Album i select on Photos to the Eseries Device.

2. I know the Eseries is business oriented devices.

But a big WHY Photos cant send a single image to the Eseries device. Now am using the Ovi application and select the images (the same i have on Photos) and send it to the Mobile. this is shame am using N and Eseries device and wanna both to be synchorized and organized on one PC application since both have 3.2 Mega Pixel Camera and the Eseries device has better Video recording..i know its not your fault guys to make this difference between multimedia and business phones but is it so difficult to make the Eseries compatible with Nokia Photos and Music and any multimedia software?

Some clarification on my last comments: we are looking into some reports of error messages when repositioning items in the map. That is, when moving items that already have a location in the map to a new position. If you are experiencing these errors, please drop us a line by using the "Give feedback" button in http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/photos . We'll get back to you with some questions.

The apps looks awesome!!
I'm still using Nokia Lifeblog, since all text messages, videos, photos etc. are stored in one single directory with sub-directories.
Where are the text messages, videos and photos stored in this Photos version? The Photos version I tried dumped everything in my pictures, which I didn't like... I also didn't see where the text messages were stored...

Hello again everyone - we are looking into some reports of error messages when items in the map. Expect an update soon.

Eismaus - thanks for the detailed feebdack, we'll look into your suggestions. About your point #4, you can search for an address by clicking on the search icon (magnifying glass) just below the zooming control in the map. There is an advanced tab where you can search for a specific address. You can also save places by clicking on the Save button or by right clicking on the map and selecting Add to My Places.

For some screebshots on how to use the map view, see the review at http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/8097_Nokia_Photos_15_now_availa...

Well.. I was hoping that this would allow me some kind of Lifeblog-like synchronisation between my PC and 6220 Classic, but it turns out I can only copy over pictures and video. Why not SMS.. It really does not make any sense. I think I'll stick to Flickr or Picasa. Does the world really need another photo organising piece of software?

(Post 27) I agree with Juha Kauppinen, having the tags embeddet into the photofile would make things a lot easyer. Even better, if it could read tags made with picassa or photoshop elements..

(Post 28)
Thanks for the answer. I had to actually search for the magnifying glass.. is not really jumping in your eyes.
I read your suggested side. Somewhere on the side, ther is a statement, that photos would also show calender entrys.
"Version 1.5 retains the Timeline and Organise views from earlier versions. The Timeline view incorporates text messages and calendar entries to give you a 'lifestream' view of what you have been doing."
I haven't found this feature, if it realy is includet. But i would LOVE it! Maybe even in/outcoming calls..

(Post 31) Great suggestions!

(Post 34) I never really used to function to sync picture back to my phone. But syncing sms back would be a great plus.

Errors
I got errors, when i selectet around 20 Pictures in the timeline to add a location tag to them. "Nokia Photos encountered problems synchronising your Nokia de.." the rest is cut off.

looks like the ovisuite released awhile ago that didnt work to well on vista

A few tips: keep it simple, make the mobile lifeblog and the pc counter part look and feel somewhat the same

Integrate integrate integrate first and foremost get a synergy with your own products. Like mapster, sportstracker, wellness diary, ovi, conversation etc

Support established standards and commonly used apps like iptc, exif, xmp, blogger, flickr, atom etc.

Oh and again keep it simple light and fast. You can always make a media app for managing the rest and integrate that w say your musicstore etc.

@canne(Post 42)
To enable GPS tagging of your images on your N95, install the LocationTagger application from Beta Labs. It works great on my N95 as well as on my E90.

When you then sync your images using Nokia Photos, they appear on the map right away.

To enable GPS data in Flickr, you must set up your Flickr account as follows:
1) Go to Your Account
2) Go to Privacy & Permissions
3) Set Import EXIF location data to Yes.

Now your images geotagged using Nokia Photos will appear on the map in Flickr.

@jesper (Post 43)
I use Nokia Photos on my Home PC (Vista) and on my Notebook (XP SP3) no Problems at all.

I needet to deinstall the old version, an then reinstall to get it to run correctly, but other than that, no problems!

By the way, is there a way to sync both Photo installations?
Sometimes, when i'm on the go with my notebook, i download the photos/sms to post it.
But theses Photos and Messages are lost for my pc, because the lifeblog aplication stored them as allready download.

Some suggestions?

Why don't you use the backup function (found under tools)?
I used this funktion to make a database/photo copy for my notebook.

I just realised there are some bug with audio files.

1) A few old XXX.amr files that where stored month ago are not longer playable with my vista pc. Notebook is with my boyfrind right now, so i could not test.

2) I createt some sound files with the lifeblog aplication today. While syncing, it said found 3 new files.. and everthing seams ok.
After the sync, there are no soundfiles in the timeline! I restartet nokia photos but nothing changed.
I also made sure, that the audiofiles where activatet under the show/hide options.

3)Under Settings there is a path for photos and videos.. Where are soundfiles are stored?

This is a good update, mapping feature is excellent. Two comments:

1) It is rather slow to start
2) It would be good to have an options to show ALL geotagged photos rather than just the ones in the current selected folder.

thanks everyone for the great initial feedback. Here are some of the things that we'll look into fixing based on your input in this and other blogs:
1. Eliminate or increase the max 50 items limit when uploading
2. Give higher visibility to "Go to date" and "Go to today" features in the timeline
3. Fine-tune general performance

Please keep the feedback coming, we'd like to hear even more ways we could improve Nokia Photos.

Great application - perhaps going ahead too fast for me.

Works otherwise well but the following problems occurred:

When I add a single file from my digital camera (Canon 450D) in a sub-folder of My Pictures it appears twice in Nokia Photo. I cannot remove the second catalog entry without deleting the image first.

Crashes when I am removing files from the Favorites album.

GPS is a nice add-on but quite slow. I have not been able to figure out how to add GPS info in the photos on my N95.

Ovi integration works as it worked already in 1.3 ?

Flickr integration does not make any use with the GPS data.

Keep up good work!

I was looking forward to a new version of Nokia Photos because I could not use the old version because I use Win XP with SP3. But I still can't start Nokia Photos after upgrading to Nokia Photos 1.5.200. Has anyone else had problems with Nokia Photos 1.5.200 and Win XP with SP3..?? I've just tried Nokia Photos on a Vista laptop and I love it so I would love to get it working on my own laptop..
Thanks

@47 Eismaus
Thanks for the answer. But it made me a bit puzzled because when I wrote to Nokia Care about the not being able to run either Nokia Photos or Nokia Music I got the answer:
"Based on the details that you have provided, kindly note that although Windows XP is a compatible operating system but the service pack may not facilitate the installation of the software in question."
But if you are able to run Nokia Photos then that is not the problem.. When I try to run Nokia Photos I only get the load screen and then nothing. I've tried to remove all Nokia software and reinstall and every other thing I could think of. If anyone has got any idea on how to make it work then please please tell me..
Thanks

@TiK(Post 54)
Thanks for the GPS tips, I will definitely give the LocationTagger and my Flickr account a try.

Meanwhile I resolved (kind of) the problem of duplicate entries of my Canon 450D pictures. I use Canon's uploader to get the CR2 RAW files and such from the camera. I edit the RAW image and actually would like to put only the exported JPG file into the Nokia Photo time line (with stripped EXIF data + add the GPS data). Then use the upload to OVI and to Flickr.

The problem is with the M-platform task (NokiaMServer) that is obviously running in background, monitoring My Pictures folder. Now if I put the Canon RAW plus other images in a My Pictures subfolder they all appear in Nokia Photo time line, twice! All temporary files, deleted files, everything! The bad thing is the database somehow keeps the file names so no matter what trick you try, you always get double entries. For example, if you move the file into another directory and then import it, the process says "duplicate entry".

I finished to move the digital camera RAW pictures away from My Pictures folder (XP SP3) and put them apart in My Documents folder. The pictures that I want to appear in Nokia Photo, I copy manually into the My Pictures\year-month folder with a different name and then I use the File->Import function of Nokia Photo.

There is definitely improvement here for better user experience. Now it requires a stubborn user...

the program is good, except that if you copy back sms from nokia photos to phone thefolders are wrong (sms sent will be transferred on received folder, and received sms will be transferred on sent folder) and the time of the object is wrong (for example original sms time was 18.30, and once copied back to phone it is shown as 20.30 time

Terrible Application, slow and full of bugs... Still, the concept looks promising, but the actual version is far beyond similar applications such as Picasa or ACDSee...

#25 Juha Kauppinen Wed, 2008-09-24 06:55

Looks quite nice. One big mistake is to put tags to separate database. Should be embedded as Adobe XMP format to jpg file or noone use it.

#26 Lars Wed, 2008-09-24 10:44

I will try this now. I love Lifeblog, but it can be much better. I hope this version solves some of this stuff.:

1. when an SMS is listed, a small thumbnail of the sender
2. Add calenderposts in lifeblog
3. Add note about ingoing- outgoing calls.

If this was present, then it would really start to look like a LifeBlog /lifeCaching.

#27 Lars Wed, 2008-09-24 10:58

Damn - no improvements what so ever to the LifeBlog / Timeline part of the application. Is this a priority at all at Nokia?

Yeah OK - Photo functionality is cool, but not better that Picasa and some of the other larger photoalbums, it is "Just another photoalbum"

I tried to synchronize my pics grom N95-1 with Nokia Photo 1.5., it detects teh phone, start to communicate with it, teh Lifeblog start on the phone starts... and that's all. It hangs on the 1st ietm to synchronise ( out of appr. 3000) and Nokia Photo responds that there is an eror with the phone.

I ahve lates firmware on N95-1 (v300 and latest PC Suite, connecting via USB.

I never used before such synchronistaion.

Other functions in PC Suite and related software seems to function well.

I did not define in Lifeblog in teh phone the blog details ( where to post on teh web), but whether I do have to define this if I just wish to synchrinize with PC?

@Jan Novak: Other datatypes are stored in local settings application data folder.

Here's the path:

%appdata%\..\Local Settings\Application Data\nokia\Nokia Data Store\Files\

You can find this out by right clicking on a MMS/audio file and selecting "Locate on Hard Disk".

SMSs aren't stored in files like they were in Lifeblog.

This is no change(highly required), just addition of geo-tagging. Ive never given a bad judgment for a final product on beta labs, this is the first(well the whole time during beta testing i was giving hard feedback)

This IS a Waste!!!
What has happed here guys!Nokia!
One aspect I love from Nokia is "Connecting" non in the sense of communication but in consistancy with a structure.

I am fully aware where this software goes an work with ovi suite. Ovi suite is the succecsor to nseries suite and so forth with nokia photos.

*I choose to use just nokia products for all range of media & data for compatabilty and consistancy and the ease of not searching for an alternate solution(which there is and better is some aspects)

I will keep my comment on the video aspect.
With Nokia Pc Suite the Video Application is provided. With Ovi Suite it is not. And in addition the suite is not compatable with the Video application independitly.
Ovi says it plays video as does nokia photos. But not How. I know it windows player. So in order to play a video on ovi, it will open nokia photo just to play a video from windows player. Have you seen a monkey scratch his head, he does it by starting with his right arm to reach the left side of his head(not saying that about you guys, always excellent performance, and i understand there is only so much control on ur side of the court)
Ive uninstalled ovi suite so i can go back to Nokia pc suite for the Video application becasue it gives so much more control and support.(Also im aware of an ovi update coming soon)
While Ovi & Photo say and shows for video support control and managment.....But reality it is very poor and disaryed.
Gotta be harsh to get you guys cracking with beta feedback ;)
(P.S I may have missed out a few more points, if rememberd ill be back to post :) )

I'm a big fan of the old Nokia Lifeblog and the newer Photo application.
I have been using it with my movable type blog for years now.
While it is exiting to have a better ovi integration, it is more important for me, to have the blogging compatibility with my blog!
Right now i'm downloading the beta. More thougths later.

Nice. A few flicks, but nice.
The geotagging feature didn't work.
Two suggestions:
1. enable "Go to date" and "Go to today" right clicking the timeline
2. Since we have a map now, it would be awesome if we could sync our landmarks as well... As far as I know, no Nokia app is able do this

A great offer, and noticably faster than the version I was previously using. I've mentioned them before, but there are 2 major annoyances, one of which I don't think is really Nokia Photos' fault:

1. Why the 50-pic/upload limit? I can use the Share on Ovi web uploader and do over 100, so why am I limited to 50 through Nokia Photos?
2. Why can't I create a new Channel on Share on Ovi through this app? It's rather useless for me to load up Share on Ovi's website, create a new channel, and then turn around and use a different uploader, which, as mentioned, is more limited than the one that I already have open in my web browser.

Aside from that, it's a great app, I'm really loving the mapping feature.

Great Product, BUT sadly still no support for GIF images.
I only say this because many images i use for MMS are GIF format. They are great to use for MMS, they give a nice animation illusion. I back up all mobile related images to my PC.

I love the new version. All the old functionally are still there.

But i have a few sugestions.
1) Geotagging: i have a folder "Folders" with subfolders 2008-08, 2008-09 and so on..
If i click on a subfolder i can see the pictures of this month on the map. But i don't see any pictures when i click on Folders. Why not? What if i want to see all Pictures i made at a spezial location over a long time range?

2) I still can use Photos with my movable type blog. Yay. But while i can post text notice and sms through the lifeblog aplication on my phone, i still get the message "The collection contains unsupportet item types and/or some files are mission." I want to post the notes with the pc too!

3) Why do i have to flip pictures to see the tags? A mouse over popup would make things easer.

4) How do i search for an address on the map? Where can i see the saved "My Places"?

Lifeblog and later photos, for me where about telling a story. Taking photos, commenting them, sms conversation and sharing all this with frinds on my blog..

While this is not realy a Nokia problem, i still post it here. Maybee another user have a solution for me.
After the latest update for movable type (4.2), i just get a link to an textfile, if i post a sms or a notice, instead of the displayed message.

I think this new version is a step in the right direktion.

Sergeyu - Nokia Photos uses the Lifeblog application in your N95 to synchronize your media with your PC. It's not trying to blog anything or upload anything to the web.

It seems that you Lifeblog app is stuck for some reason. Try the following workaround:
1. Start the Lifeblog application in your device. Depending on your device model you can find Lifeblog in the Gallery or in a folder called 'Applications', 'Media' or 'My Own'.
2. If Lifeblog asks you to import old items, select Yes.
3. Select Options -> Update timeline

after that, connect your phone to your PC and try synchronizing with Nokia Photos again.

@TiK(Post 54)
LocationTagger works fine on N95-1 (30.0.15), thanks for the tip!

When posting the GPS tagges photo to Flickr using Flickr Uploader on Win XP the GPS data shows correctly on Flickr site.

When viewing the image with Nokia Photo 1.5.20 both the GPS data and the map view shows correctly.

When posting to Flickr with Nokia Photo 1.5.20 the GPS data gets stripped so that only the degrees are correct, everything else is zeroed which gives awkward position information... I tried all three GPS format settings in Nokia Photo, but in vain.

Ive been looking for a function which seems to have been removed from Nokia Photos but which Lifeblog had. The copy new items only sync ability instead of syncing both ways only.

I basically want to delete stuff from the phone without removing it from my pc.

If this feature is already there can someone tell me where.

Jan Novak:

You can change where photos and videos are stored when synced from a phone.

Go to Tools | Settings... | Synchronisation

And you can select the paths there.

However, it isn't possible to change where other types (such as SMS/MMS/etc) are stored.

This is the most frustrating software. I cannot set a path for my downloaded photos in the main Ovi window, when I set it in Nokia Photo it doesn't remember it. Nokia Photo seems to keep getting an invisible dialog box opened which renders the software effectively frozen (cue the 3-fingered salute every 5 minutes). Not that previous versions were any better. Had to flash my phone to get it to even talk to the software, now I wish I hadn't. Nokia make great phones but I wish their software was up to the same level. Please use standard dialogs etc so at least you can find them on an Alt-Tab. Definitely a D-, could do better from me.

i hope someone is also keeping track of the discussions forum... tons of legitimate questions without any proper answers ... here is the link... oh, don't worry, it's closely related to OVI "Suite"....

p.s. personally i agree with the negative feedback on this site... as usually, nothing will improve, wait and see :)

I just found another but.

On both photo installation (XP and Vista) the settings for OVi and for my blog vanished.

If i want to publish something, i have to insert the settings, then i can publish my post/photo, and when i click on the next photo, i have to make all the settings again..

Please HELP!
Can no longer sync the Lifeblog with phone. (PC Sync works fine). With Nokia Photos 1.5.. PC program shows up about 800 new items.. Phone screen shows it is about to sync about 1200 items.. and then it only syncs a single SMS from 3 months ago and stops! I've unisntalled and reinstalled everything, cleaned up registry, cleared database from the User directory on PC, updated timeline on phone.. to no avail. Any suggestions?

Nikos
Had the same problem - I solved it by manually deleting the last item it synced, using lifeblog on the phone. It took forever but it worked.
So delete the SMS 3 months ago for starters
