Hi there!
We added a nifty new feature to Mobile Codes site: creation of Business card barcodes. With these codes you can share your contact details with friends and colleagues. Just create the code at mobilecodes.nokia.com and print, post or share it in any way. We have also added a downloadable version of Nokia Barcode Reader which can decode the codes and save the information directly into device Contacts. Some of the latest Nokia devices such as Nokia E66 and Nokia E71 can also decode these codes right away.
To demonstrate this we made a short video, as seen above. There you can also find out how I used my new Business card code :)
Have fun with the codes!
-Jukka
PS. If you have new ideas for Mobile codes, you know what to do!
Comments:
@Jukka, yeah, well I would choose host my myself, but yes, a service like that makes it easy for anyone to generate.
Sure, you can link to the extension any way you like (probably easiest to link to the mozilla page. It's already using the mobilecodes.nokia.com generator.
If anyone from your team has any interest in helping improve the add-on I'm more than happy to take their input.
wza: What do you mean, doesn't work that way?
Duncan: Somethink like this: http://194.41.16.33/easylink/? As a first we could actually link your FF extension to Mobile Codes site so that even more people will find it, what do you think?
Hi, odd question here, I've got a n82 - Asian edition, running the new 30.* firmware and I can't see the barcode reader anywhere on my device. When I try and install it, it says it's already installed on the device.
Thanks for another handy app, it'll be very handy when these codes have critical mass. Cheers, Neil
@Neil: It should be in there somewhere, like Applications -> Office.
It's hard to reach critical mass when the application itself is hidden :( In Japan I understood the reader is part of the camera application, that would be the way to go.
You might want to correct the embed code, it looks like it's been copied from a Word doc, it won't work this way.
Chrz
I used my N95-1, work well for the Vcard, thx :)
But i must note, it is not stated that with current firmware V30 the application already installed supports this coding. I had to go back an forth a few times to figure, do i update? or Not? Well i gave you my result, Yes its Supported. Just needs to be Noted. Chow.
hmm....i didnt try Jukka, sorry my bad. I just tryed if it read the code an disregarded it after. :(
A bug in the datamatrix code.
The Datamatrix Code does not show the complete details but the QR code works fine.
@Gomcoite: Could you be more specific, which details are left out from DM code?
Both the Datamatrix and QR codes are working fine for the business card I made for myself.
If I add my address to the business card, in both QR and Datamatrix formats, it adds it to my phone as an PO BOX field,
Full Address is not coming up in the datamatrix. i only get 4 characters
Ratkat, Gomcoite: Thanks for the reports. We'll see if there is something we can do to fix those on the site.
Nice video Jukka! Well explained, although it could do with some companion videos showing how the web and number barcodes work too... perhaps showing how they can use my Firefox extension :oP
Now, I know vCards are technically part of the spec, but they get so complex that it's hard for lower-resolution cameras to pick up (especially with the Nokia app... UPCode works quite a lot better from my experience). What I would suggest is to create the downloadable vCard on a website and link to that URL (or perhaps a tinyurl version of the URL), as this would be a much smaller/less complex barcode to scan, and would also allow the details to be updated easier just by updating the file.
Vululami: Yes I have seen i-nigma, it's quite good. While you might be technically correct about adapting the latest Nokia Barcode Reader into N95 or other earlier models, it's up to the individual products to decide.
Hi all
Tried to create a V card to test on my n95, I'm afraid I was unable to read the Vcard unless I just load just my first and last name
I am using the N95-1 (version 30.0.015)
the url and text bar codes worked fine though
Regards
V
Vululami, N95 doesn't have or support the new barcode reader with vCard support.
Jukka
Not sure if you have seen the i-nigma reader (http://www.i-nigma.com/persona l/GetReader.asp).
Basically it can read (in its rather weird way)some info from a V-Card created on http://mobilecodes.nokia.com/c reate.
Although it mixes up the last name with the firstnames in the first line of contacts entry (e.g. Last Name;Firstname)it does give one an option to save that to contacts
My question is, was the barcode reader in the latest nokia phones(E66) ever tested for compatibility with the earlier generations like the N95-1. I am convinced that with some minor twicks, the same scanners can be addapted for the n95 and added to the phones in the next firmware upgrade.
Please correct me if I wrong.
Regards
V
@Joey: Did it really give you an option to save directly into Phonebook? I have N95-1 and firmware 30.0.15, and it certainly doesn't recognise vCard.
Right.. When spamming, might be a good idea to actually have a working URL there?
