Major update for Nokia Email service: see your suggestions coming to life

Guest writer: Davis Fields, Nokia Email service team
nokia_email_service_banner.PNG

Hello Beta Labs!

Today, the Nokia Email service team is proud to announce the first updated beta release. Nokia Email service is designed for Nokia device owners to make mobile email easily discovered and intuitive. Since we launched on August 8th, we’ve received thousands of questions, suggestions and positive feedback about Nokia Email service. We’re pleased to say that we’ve taken four of the most popular feedback requests from our users and implemented them in this release.

If your request is not on this list, that doesn’t mean we’re not working on it. For instance, the bug where messages didn’t appear in the sent folder has been fixed (messages will now appear in the sent folder after they have been sent). One area I want to highlight that we’re working on is Google-Apps hosted email. The setup is currently not working correctly for Google Apps and similarly hosted domains (where the email address domain is different than the mail server domains). We are aware of this and are working diligently to implement those accounts in future releases.

Again, keep the feedback coming in, and we hope you enjoy this new version.

- Davis Fields

Just out of curiosity, does this now Support Live Hotmail? If so, how do I get it set up for it?

I'm using Mail on 3 to get my Hotmail straight to my phone as it comes, but I'd be willing to switch if this service is better.

Thanks for the S60 3rd. Ed, FP2 (3.2 is for geeks.. erm, developers only :) support!

Some FP2 specific feedback:
- it doesn't understand the Connection groups, which is shame since then it could use automatically Wifi
- it doesn't know which emails are read from Google email
- when it is put to background (but still online) it doesn't show up in S60 app manager? Inner geek in me wants to know if it's running or not..

The new version does not send emails immediatly if you are on sync intervals.
This means that your email will only be sent in an hour delay.
In the previous version emails were sent immediatly.
This is a very big problem and makes the program almost unusable.
You have to sync manualy after every email you send.
Please correct this or give us an option to reinstall the previous version.

After upgrading to your latest release of Nokia eMail, I can't use your service at all, as my phone can't "connect to the server with the provided information", when I try to setup my mailbox, which I had used successfully with the previous version.
I'm using my own domain hosted with a small ISP, where the username is completley different from the eMail address. Also the server names are only domain.tld without any subdomain.
I fear your system can't handle this.

Guys Did we just go backward? There has been issues showing now that has not shown for me in the Past.
I'm on 95-1 t-mobile usa EDGE connection(unlimited) Have my syncing to PUSH(on 24/7)

For about every 12-24 hour i am asked to re-login. I had a chance to get a glimpse of the pop-msg; saying may validation has expired and must reacquire login(something like that). In the options there seemed no reason for this, plus where password is placed is removed posed to last version.

Now this is WEIRED. Every little while, maybe sometimes after a phone call, or just no reason, my EDGE signal appears to be off from the home screen of the phone not the application. Enter the app interface to look why, click options, but shows go offline not go online as an option. Nevertheless i must manually reconnect. And i am sure there is no data connection even though the app says otherwise.

Also to note on this visual aspect. When holding menu key to reveal open application, Theres the normal @ icon for the nokia email service application. But when left inbox open, there would show 2 @+@ one says email app the other saying inbox. Compared to last version in the case of the open inbox was an image of an inbox, then the current @. I think that is a mistake causing confusion upon many users, It would save us time and the hassle of identifying the image if it is our inbox(and in the case of multiple inbox, i wouldnt know so i cant say much) By reverting back to the previous image. It would make a better insertion of colored inbox(for example) for each account to make the easier selection.

I also think this is a step backwards...

The new client asks to re-login everyday and doesn't remember the saved password. The email client is now very slow opening screens etc. and when opening a new email on the E66 the email is opened soem way down the body of the email, therefore not showing the sender details. This means that you need to scroll UP to see this information.

I tried removing the application but it would not remove from the phone so had to format the phone!! I then got a file corrupted message....

Well not only is the application requesting that I re-validate my password every so often, I can no longer re-validate my password as of this morning.

"Login unsuccessful!
Please try again."

Has anyone else experienced this? Are the mail servers down?

Google-apps and other similar hosted domains, where the email servers are different than the email address’s domain name do work with Nokia Email.
It's possible to change your entered email address with a simple javascript after the first connection check is done. Use @imap.gmail.com as email to pass the connection test, then use a javascript to change it to your own emailaddress, supply the incoming servername and port and you're on your way. Check my website for details.

the update is working fine. 4 out of 6 my email accounts work fine in nokia mail. But my hotmail n my office account still don't work. Actually, i expect nokia mail could handle my office account which can be sincronized if nokia mail has advanced email setup for exchange owa server or secure pop with self certificate.

Hope nokia mail development team could accomodate my request.

1/ anything to do to enable international characters ?
2/ push email drains e71 battery in a day (not new)
3/ it's slow to open the message list on a e71. Should be possible to drop the message in the standard email application
4/ should be possible to get messages sent immediately as before
5/ the intervals don't make sense. 10 15 20 30 minutes intervals would be a lot more useful

Keep up the good work !

I'm incredibly frustrated by this My-Email feature.

While getting used to the phone, N82, I entered my email address and password -- nothing else -- and started using the service.

I then decided that I don't like getting 50 texts a day telling me I have 50 emails (mostly SPAM, of course). So I tried to turn the service off. I couldn't.

I couldn't find anything about it in the User Guide and very little on-line.

I don't want the service.

Please let me know how I can legitimately cancel the service.

The only work-around that has stopped the texts is I changed my password. Now I get texts asking me to re-validate. I don't want to re-validate, but there is no info available telling me how i would do that even if I wanted to.

Can you please clear these issues up for me. I've only had my phone for three days and this is driving me batty.

Better mailbox management. When you delete an email on your Nokia phone, it will be deleted from your email account. We’ve enabled this for both IMAP and POP accounts.

I would rather not have my emails deleted from my account, better still a option in settings to either delete from phone, or delete from phone and server,

Your application is really great; very good job, but;
why:
1.- Nokia email does not integrate with the messaging application in the phone, instead is located in its own folder?

2.- Nokia email does now has the feature: New email popup notification at time a new mail is received? (mail for exchange is a good example)

3.- Nokia email is not able to show HTML email as the Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices does?

I think the three above mentioned are important features to add to your application in order to do easier the handling of mail of the Nokia phones.

Regards

hotmail still does not work.
battery drains very fast if sync is set up for "push email intervals"
can you introduce sync intervals that are longer than "push email intervals" but shorter than one hour, lets say 15 and 30 minute intervals.

thanks

The default account I had in the previous version works fine. I am unable to add any more new email IDs to check

Whenver I try to add an email ID from the addressbook, I get an "Out of Memory" Error

When I try to add the other account from the Website, I get a "Server not responding" error ...

Will still continue to try ..

Cheers!

Hi all

I have installed the new beta in my nokia e90 and it works fine, but when i try to add a new email adress on the nokia website, after entering all the settings i get the following message "Invalid email server port" I have tried several times but to no avail.
could it be that demon internet is not supported yet, or as anyone experienced this before.
any help is much apreciated.

The previous version worked better for me with no issues at all.

This version is very slow on my E66 when drawing screens etc.

Is it possible to get a copy of the previous version as I would like to go back it??

Yes the new nokia email beta is much better than before , i now have 2 mailboxes in one account but yahoo still not working, also i have been testing nokia email personally on my phone the n6120C but its still not listed on the phone list. Results: Its working fine on 6120c except it drains the battery very quickly. I have to recharge everyday

Works way better now than the previous version! Very useful for me is the feature to sync the income folder with my imap account, so that I don't have to delete/read the same email twice. What would really be best, though, if I could sync all my imap folders.

Anyway, for me this is looking great. And I like the idea of including this service into ovi, so that one would have the same access to emails via the ovi web pages.

Over all, I like this app. Unfortunately, one of the config settings for an account STILL doesn't work. When you set "READ STATUS" to "don't sync to server" it still syncs to server. :( I probably won't use unless this setting works.

#40 Colin Wantling Tue, 2008-10-14 20:08

The previous version allowed configuration of mailserver addresses. The latest version seems to have no way to configure them. The program presumably tries to determine addresses of servers, but can't. This means I can no longer use the program,a great pity.

#41 Christian Tue, 2008-10-14 20:41

@Colin
The same problem as mine - neither usernames nor server addresses can be defined.
I hope with the next release Nokia eMail will also try to automatically determine receipients' eMail addresses and the content of message and also answer eMails automatically. Then we'll have eMail fully automated.

The application works VERY fine!
The only trouble is that one out of four accounts I set up on my phone from Nokia email web site, is non reachable via Outlook 2007 Message: (0x8004210E): "La cassetta postale non è temporaneamente disponibile a causa del recapito di un altro messaggio o dell'accesso da parte di un'altra applicazione. Il server ha risposto: -ERR [IN-USE] user mailbox locked"
Any idea about the solution?

I use google application which is essentially gmail. The problem seems the inability to define ssl imap/smtp. Any help will be appreciated.

I have setup Nokia Email on my E71, setup of the two accounts went well, all was initially OK, until at some stage the main screen where the application shows how many emails are unread kept showing that there's 0 unread in my main account (of two), but then below there's another message that says '1 new in other mailboxes' this one does not go away? I have checked the other account, ensured that all emails have been read but it still shows up, have closed down and restarted application, have restarted Nokia, but don't want to start over if there's a fix for this - please let me know if there is, thanks.

This was not good. Installed and it removed all my emails from my phone. I have no idea how to get them back except for using my gmail app. It also would not let me click my emails from the phone's main menu - wouldn't do anything but it just hung there.

And there still isn't support for html. I have to agree with other posters in saying that isn't something you would expect from an email client in modern day.

Since I upgraded all the email I send out don't have my name in the 'From' field but just the email address and with some client (like Apple Mail) when you reply to an email I sent out using the mobile client, the reply-to field is empty!!

Yes, I did check all the settings on the phone (E71) and on email.nokia.com and my name is set up properly and everything. It used to work fine with the previous version.

As far as the battery life goes, I think it probably would be much less of a drain if I had 3G switched off. Certainly whenever I've used other programs that maintain a connection it drains the battery really quickly if using 3/3.5G. I can switch it off in my phone connection settings (set to GSM instead of Dual), but there are some things I do want to use 3G for(web browsing, downloads, using laptop through phone connection) so then I have to switch it back again. I'd like to be able to specify, per program, whether it should try and use 3G or not. Is this a feature that could be added to Nokia Mail?

#54 Peter Gichuru Thu, 2008-12-18 10:54

Seems like the ability to change connection (e.g. from 3G to Wifi) has been removed from the "Settings_General_Service Info" menu in the upgrade. This was an important feature and should be returned.

I started using it with my Nokia E71. Works perfectly as desired. Almost as good as Blackberry email service provided by Airtel in India. I recommend everybody should use it who is in GPRS.

This should not be a paid service even for future. Nokia can charge onetime for the service with the handset or thorough it's web site.

Any body knows whether this service reduces the talk time availability? Must be because the mobile synchs continuously with the gprs. Though I could feel the diffrence since I started using it.

Well, I think so. It's step backward. I've upgraded new version of nokia email today because I'd to re-login every several hours and it stucked me out. But when I upgraded to new version with my N82, email receiving was good, but there were critical bug! I've got no notification sound and '@' sign when email is arrived!!! It's not happen with previous version. If I could rollback the old version I'll downgrade current version. Even though I should re-login when it's said I should re-enter my password.
If anybody still save the previous version of nokia email beta. Please email me where I could get the old version. Thanks :)

the application now regularly requests the user password... Not daily as some have reported but more like every week.

Another issue is that carriage returns seem to be removed from mail trails, making previous mails very hard to read on screen.

well, installed the Beta 3 in my N96. Works fine with Gmail. However could not add yahoo mail. The application drains battery while on sync. The sent folder is unable to distinguish between read and unread sent items. For example, sometimes an unread sent item is NOT in bold. I really dislike the background of this application. Can the theme background be used instead? Anyway your efforts are appreciated.

For me it doesn't work. I thought that the difference between the Nokia e-mail and the e-mail already installed in my cellphone (E71), was the push-mail. But in my computer I sent an e-mail to the account that I have use in the Nokia e-mail and it received half hour later. And I checked the inbox (in the computer) and the e-mail was there one minute after I sent.

Another bad thing is that there's no more Access Points Groups. That was very usefull!!!

The update to the new version works well. I'm using 4 different email addresses and all work fine. My only problem is that email from the default account gets deleted randomly and on every new push of email. Anyone else encountering this problem? The other 3 accounts aren't affected by this.

COME ON NOKIA this didn't happen in the previous version.

Hi, I've got my google apps account working fine but I cannot add my 1and1 email account which I use for work. Does anyone have a workaround. I keep getting the error message both online and in the client on the phone 'unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again'

My 1and1 account uses exactly the same imap set up as my google apps account so I'm a little confused why I can't use Nokia email with it. If I could get it working it looks like a neat application!
