Introducing Share Online 4.0 with improved usability and economic sharing (limited availability)

Guest writer: Julio Castillo, Senior Product Manager.
Hello everyone,
We’d like to give you a sneak preview of the upcoming version 4.0 of Share Online. With this application you can share your pictures and videos on Ovi directly from your phone. You can also keep track of the latest comments and pictures sent by your friends. Share Online also works with several other image sharing services.
Here are some of the new things that you will notice in Share Online 4.0 beta:
- Improved upload/download experience. You don’t need to wait for your photos to be uploaded before uploading the next one. You can refresh your feeds, add comments, or even exit the application while the uploading is still in progress.
- Outbox. You can see a list of pending uploads, as well as review, cancel or retry specific uploads. You can also use the Outbox to keep track of which photos and videos you have already uploaded.
- Economic sharing. If you don’t have an affordable data plan, you can disable the use of cellular data in the Share Online settings, and queue your photos and videos to be uploaded as soon as a free WLAN connection is available. In addition, there are data counters available, in case you want to keep track of your cellular data usage.
- Active standby indicators. Your outbox info is visible and accessible in your active standby screen. If you prefer, you can also remove these indicators.
The new features in Share Online 4.0 make use of technical enablers present only in the very latest versions of S60. Because of this, we are making this beta available initially only to a very limited number of devices: N96, 6220 Classic, 6210 Navigator and 5320 XpressMusic. We are aware that this limits considerably the reach of this beta, but we wanted to make Share Online 4.0 publicly available as soon as possible in order to start listening to your feedback. We will add support for a few more devices in the following weeks.
Download here.
We look forward to your comments and suggestions. On behalf of the Share Online team,
Julio
Comments:
voalaa...what i just had done is... i tooke a short video clip, hit the button Share online...and here we go...the video is being posted to Vox..then i switched it back to "photo mode" and I got a messsage "format not suported"
so..i think Share Online has problem with determining file types.. There is nothing we can do, just wait for programmers to fix it. I am using Share 4.0
facebook & picasa would be great
Just installed this on my 6220C. Flickr works fine. On Ovi I get the same login error as the posters above (I was getting this on the old 3.1 version that came with my phone too). Very strange.
Suggestion-wise: Would it be possible to add YouTube and Facebook support. I'd like to be able to upload video / photos there too.
Also, it would be neat if there was some facility for sites and individuals to create their own additional services too (either privately for personal use or sharable so others can use them too).
How about version for multimedia computer N85?
Also: are you supporting Flickr video uploads yet or what? They've been supporting video for quite a while now.
Give Pixelpipe a shot, you can upload to over 50 different photo/video sites, blogs and social networks directly from ShareOnline. They'll even automatically generate the configuration file for you if you visit http://pixelpipe.com/nokia from your phone.
When are you planning to give this app for N95 8GB?
Been over a month? Where are the N85 and other FP2 devices client?
Can you please tell me why OVI and flick services do not come up by default when i try to update for new services? It does come up when i download the ovishare.cfg but a user sudnt have to do this. I hope someone clarifies this.
PS:I am located in India and i think all customers in India have this problem
come on Beta Labs... when will this update to Share Online be available for the N95? can't wait to install this app on my little baby ;-)
Andy,
Try accessing http://share.ovi.com/
Its closed for maintenance, so mothing for Share on OVI will be working at the moment till they come back online. The 404 errors are its not finding the site, cos its not there!
Check on the http://share.ovi.com/ and when that is back up and running try Share 4.0 again.
@Julgates and other who have gotten the error: Operation failed (500). This is a timeout error usually caused by your operator's connection having problems reaching Share on Ovi. Some operators have configurations that block the traffic to Share on Ovi. Here are some things you can try:
a) If your device has WLAN please retry over a WLAN connection (in Share Online go to Options -> Settings -> Advanced and disable cellular data)
b) Retry over 3G or 2G data after a few minutes. With some operators the connection seems to work but has a high failure rate.
c) if you keep getting this error, please use the “give feedback” button in the download page to contact us directly. Specify your device, country and operator. We'll try to help you.

when will be available FP1 version??? really need this app, i very often uploading photos from this app and don't like that it need to wait before uploading completed for upload others
somehow Share is not reliable, for unknown reason I am getting a messages
"One or more media items discarded because service provider doesn't support them"
So there is a solution:
for Flickr .. use the unique email address linked to your Flickr account. It is simple upload by using you email, and works on 100 %. Just setup yout Gmail POP/IMAP account on the phone.
Still no news for an n85 support?
Hmm on the 5800 XpressMusic, it reports share online is a 4.0 version.
> Will there be a Whitepaper/Documentation on how to write service-interfaces to add third-party services into online-share ?
Currently there isn't. I think there should be, but don't know about the plans.
Please add support for Flickr and Youtube and the N95 8GB. If you care about the North American market at all, you need to be open and inclusive. You also really, REALLY, need single-sign-on.
Sorry folks, we have found some issues that need to be fixed before releasing versions for N85, N78. N79. We'll support these devices in the final Share Online 4.0 release, but probably not earlier.
Apologies, prioritization decisions are always tough :(
I have installed the application on my N96 (yes, passing the lot of confirmation for installation :) )
When I try to activate OVI trough the application, I always have a wrong password status. I tried a lot of passwords then go on ovi.com to see if the application was fool. I successfully log in.
My password was good, so I assume it seems to be the username wich is case sensitive. But no, I was still unable to log-in "Authentication failed. Please check user & password".
What do you suggest ?
PS: I'm a french user.
Ok I think I have a lead : Share account has to be different from OVI account (hell...).
I create & activate my Share on OVI account with the same ID & password, try to login on the mobile : Operation failed (500)
Damn :(
Why leave out the N85 out of this?
And although i have not tried to install and test this new version, just as a reminder, i would like to bring to your notice that my N85 (India), does not show Flickr or Share on Ovi as available services! A long time back, Share Online would work with Flickr and had made my uploading a very easy task.
I hope you add support for these services for the Indian users soon.
Since my last comment, my ShoZu account is working again! Would still be nice to have a version of SO that I can fall back on if things with ShoZu go pear-shaped again. :)
Any plans for support for Facebook? Support for Google Web Picasa wouldn't harm either. Not to mention individual emails from my address book like Shozu...
I know that Ovi is Nokia's service but I want to share my pictures with my friends and they are all on Facebook, nobody's on Ovi... Sorry.
This may be a very nice application, but without support for popular picture sharing sites it is pretty much useless.
I really look forward to Share Online adding more services, it will make my Nokia so much more usable.
My suggestion is of course, more services to upload to. Facebook, Vimeo, Youtube, etc.
Also have you guys seen pixelpipe.com? they have a shareonline configuration. It's kinda broken but it works.
I think this ships first with 5800 Xpress Music, at least Share displays this version number.
I second that -- if you could find a way to work in Facebook uploads that would be pretty sweet.
when will this come out for the N95? oh yeah, and support for facebook and youtube would also be nice.
I have just installed it on my N96 but cannot appreciate the improvements because I do not use OVI. I would much rather prefer functionallity with Picasa for picture/video uploads and integration for Facebook for status updates, friends's feed etc. Shuzo has gotten it about 80% right. And if Nokia allows them to make a stand-by plugin which shows new messages/pictures/videos etc on your facebook or new pictures on your picasa group; they would much better.
Moreover, the half hearted attempt of Nokia to integrate OVI into facebook is just bad. Is for people who do not use facebook at all.
Okay, after reading this blog, i'm even more confused than before. between shozu and pixelpipe (and i can only imagine a plethora of 3rd party apps), the blogosphere has just got way too much mee-tooism going on. it's almost as though by the time you're ready to roll out your sharing platform, three other companies released something similar or better. i'm not really getting the point of ovi when there's already established social networks with greater critical mass. why do we need another one? why do i have to create yet another login? sorry, maybe not the forum for this. just venting.
Will there be a Whitepaper/Documentation on how to write service-interfaces to add third-party services into online-share ?
If there is a bug, then shouldnt the bug fix be tested via a beta once before it is released to the public?
Sounds strange coming from the betalabs that a bug fix will be released directly in the final version!
I am echoning the above OVI error messages as detailed in the other blogs - I keep getting an Operation Failed 404 message when I try and retrieve services for OVI - I can;t even set up my OVI account when it asks for account activation.
After I have uninstalled all 5 elements of the Version4 - Version 3 of Share Online is telling me the same error message 404 blah blah ... It looks broken to me and wasn't before I uploaded version 4.
And surely you could have a go at some sort of Facebook and YouTube interface ??
Please help or advise how to recover my Share Online.
Andy
Cheers
Surely some features as the how much has uploaded on the Standby screen, can be added to FP1 as an Upgrade? I understand that not all the features can work with FP1, but some of them must?
Any update on the N85 and the other FP2 devices? Been pretty long since this has been out, the other devices should also work with this by now.
Thanks everyone for the feedback. We'll definitely factor you input in our future plans.
We are looking into several reports of problems with N96 and WLAN (Wi-Fi). If you are running into this problem please use the "give feedback" button in the download page to contact us directly. We'd like to ask you a few questions.
Update: The team has been investigating reports of some devices crashing and restarting when uploading pictures with Share Online 4.0 beta.
The issue has been traced to a bug in the image shrinking component. We'll fix this for the final version, but for now the workaround is to disable the shrinking of images. Make sure you have the following setting before you start uploading: In Share Online go to Options -> Settings -> My Accounts -> Ovi/Flickr/etc -> Upload image size -> Original
Really, this is getiing irritatinngly long! When will the version for N85 be released?
>>Support for the following devices will be added in the following weeks: N78, N79, N85<<
That was two months ago. How long does a week last in Nokialand?
@satwikrath
For some absurd reasons, Share on Ovi and Flickr are not supported on Share Online for India, eventhough you can access and use those services via your desktop or even your mobile web browser.
Oh Common nokia, is there even a shade of reasonableness in here? Please explain.
facebook support. PLEASEEEEEEE
I really hope this becomes available for the N95, as I had been using ShoZu for uploading my photos to Flickr until recently.
My ShoZu account has been disabled for unknown reasons and all my attempts to get an answer have been largely ignored.
Being able to batch upload photos is one of my biggest requirements, one at a time is way too time consuming.
Another voice for direct link to Picasa and Facebook. Comon Nokia, don't try and force-feed people to use Ovi. It's nice and all but the fact is that most people will just use what they've been using before. If they've never had an account, they will use Ovi. If people are already using Picasa or another online service, then Shozu will still be more popular than Share Online.
Cant wait either for feature pack 1 version, please dont leave us in the cold :)
Would be really nice to have this on the N82.
Also support for uploads to evernote.com and zoomr.com(Using the flickr api I think) would be good.
Thanks
john
WILL this work on the n95 in the future?
搞什么飞机呀,现在还 有N78的,我日
强烈要求在博客上公布 软件开发进度.
any news about plans of a release for the N95? i use Share Online on a daily basis and i think all updates in this version let the version 3.0 look like an early beta just even so when i only read through the feature list above.
best regards,
Claudio
