Minor update for Nokia Chat: bug fixes and feature update

Written by Kristian Luoma, product manager of Nokia Chat

It's time to make the semi-monthly update for releasing fixed errors we've found so far. This package resolves issues related to memory consumption and incoming messages caused trouble during usage of predictive text input.

Inspired by the recent Beta Labs announcement made while back about Nokia Friend View, we wanted to refresh the client by tiny feature update too. We tweaked the send location feature just a bit. Now you should see your friend's profile picture on map instead of the pin. In case your friend has kept the status up-to-date, making calls works from the maps (may work differently depending on the maps version).

By the way, have you tried out the widely available different service bots that interconnect IM with social communities? I'm referring to the services like from FriendFeed IM, Enjit, Twitt'd, Jaiku, Ping.FM or have you come across any service that runs on IMified that you love? There's lots of others too I'm sure - would you like to share which ones do you find useful?

As Nokia Chat is XMPP-compliant, it just happens to be that the services that support Jabber networks (e.g. GTalk) work on Nokia Chat too. For instance in the case of FriendFeed IM: just add your Nokia Chat account to FriendFeed as a "Gtalk" service (in this context more of a synonym of Jabber-service, I think) - and voila, it works! At least, this is how I subscribe to my friends' social network updates and keep my own FriendFeed status is up-to-date these days :)

Being open is sweet.

Hi, can you guy add a feature to nokia chat, that enable to make groups of friend and all messange send to the group will be deliver to all members (even sound, pictures and text message)?

Mhm... interesting. My desktop chat clients show me as online/available even though my cell phone is turned off. Turning it on, signing on and off again doesn't change a thing.

Nice with the picture in Maps. Now just put it together with Friends View, and put a little bit of Sportstracker in and it is perfect ;-)

... and while we're at it: Use XEP-0080 for sharing location, FCS!

I wouldn't have brought up all this again, but your "Being open is sweet" forced me to do it. Couldn't resist, sorry. ;))

Generally I enjoy using Nokia Chat on my E90.
Two remarks however:
1. When the chat history runs longer, any new line I type tends to rescroll the complete window contents. Which is quite annoying.
2. Other chat clients indicate keyboard activity from teh other side. This greatly helps in avoiding cross-talk in discussions. I would appreciate this behaviour in Nokia Chat too.

After using it now for some weeks, just want to let you know that we use it more and more and like it more and more! ... To know where the other persons going to or are, we add as much landmarks as possible, but sometimes could be more..! So if an easy tracking like in Sportstracker could be included and combined with Maps, it would be great. We really often use "send my location" - and nice to use it with Maps together, from where you can plan a route to drive or to go there. - Nokia Friend we dont use and miss anymore. ...

I've just upgraded my N96 to fw 12.043 via an OTA update. In the (googled) release notes it states this version adds support for Nokia chat.

Can the website be updated to allow N96?
Would I need a new version of the client, or the same one as N95 8Gb (_31)
Presumably the internet support pack is not required?

Thanks

whenever the client is activated, it starts the internal gps of my 6110 navigator. Which won't be turned of after closing the app. I need to restart my phone for that. Can you please fix this?

I'm also going to request support for existing jabber servers. It would be a great way to expand your user base. For example, if i could use my gtalk account, or my own jabber server, I'd have all my contacts available. Until then, I'll probably have no contacts, because no one I know wants to use Ovi's service when they're already established an identity and set of contacts elsewhere.

Also, I don't think y'all understand the point of friendfeed. It's not a service like twitter where you just send status updates. It's a service where you feed in your activity on other sites, such as Flickr, twitter, etc(or Ovi services, maybe?). Sending plain old status updates is nice, but kinda useless since most people that would use it for that already have a twitter client they use which feeds into friendfeed. If you could send presence information with status updates, that would be useful.

Most importantly, you need to open up and allow other jabber servers, since there aren't that many people using ovi.com's server, and you can't force this.

@Arjun: works for me, could have been a temporary glitch.

I am unable to add a friend in Nokia chat, it say search unavailable now. Is this not available in this release or the service in not availble now?

Whenever I install the required Nokia Internet Services Support Package version 1.07(5) on my N80 with firmware v 5.0719.0.2, I lose the ability to connect to the official Windows Live Messenger client for S60 (version 1.0.9000).
I've had this same problem with almost all other versions of the support package. When using version 1.01 (the one which gets automatically downloaded when you install the Messenger client via the Download! app on the phone) it works perfectly, as well as with version 1.03.

???????N78???????????

It is very informative blog, I am really glad to send my comment to this blog.

Does it work with Polish instant messaging GG (gadu-gadu.pl)?

This really looks like a nice client, but it's still missing crucial functionality!

Nokia Chat really needs to support connecting to Jabber/XMPP servers other than chat.ovi.com
Are all Jabber users to recreate their contact lists from scratch, giving and requesting auth again for every friend? It would be so much better to just allow user@host in the login field.

Instalado sin problemas en un nokia N95 8gb, tuve que reiniciar el equipo

Installed smoothly on a nokia N95 8GB, I had to reboot the nokia

Hi, can you add a feature request for file transfers? This is a necessary thing for me. I send pictures and such to my friends but Nokia chat does not have this capability. I'd rather use this than an MMS charge! :)

Also, a dream feature would be voice and video chat.

No FP2 support?!! And on the other hand, we have Share Online 4 which is only FP2 compatible!!

Please add support for the FP2 devices, N78 is months old, N96 is your new flagship device, and all the new N series phones are FP2. Not impressive stuff this :(

damn, still no support for FP2 devices!

Ignore my last comment. I was just too stupid: I'd forgotten that I had my N800 on the charger in my 2nd appartment. Online. And with my ovi account configured and available. You Nokia-guys really make devices that are *always* online... even without me. ;)

"Being open is sweet." .... Well, yes. If you are.

Could you please re-consider your strategy about not allowing us to log on to any XMPP-server on the planet?
In other words: I like the client, but I don't like how it only allows me to use your Server.

(Or could you at least say something about your future plans here? Or why it is the way it is? You must know that you cannot really force users to use ovi this way. So what's your point then? Is it because you don't consider it ready for prime time yet? Or is it really some wicked corporate strategy?)

"Nokia Chat really needs to support connecting to Jabber/XMPP servers other than chat.ovi.com"

I "third" this (as it has been already seconded). Many of us already have well-established XMPP identity. Being able to use this identity while on the move has a lot of value for us. Having to use a different identity largely nullifies this value. Please consider allowing to use the client with arbitrary server.

Nokia should drop development of Nokia Chat and bring on the Octro Chat software. It supports VIDEO and AUDIO over XMPP! I can use either the front or back camera on my N95 and chat to other N95 users! Nokia Chat is useless now. http://octro.com/

Downloading... Would be good to have an automatic update notification in the app :-)

I'm starting to fall in love with these 2-week sprints: something to look forward to ;-)

Please add support for S60 3.3 (FP2). My old N80 was compatible with Chat AND had a built in IM client that could connect to XMPP Server..... My N85 has no IM client and no compatibility with Nokia Chat.

Additionally, Windows Live is not released for Australia yet, so that leaves only 3rd party "un-integrated" apps. Can you at least tell us when FP2 phones will be supported?

Funny foto here

I have install it,but I have not a friend use it. which who using now? add me to your friendlist for testing
my ovi account is: cutescr@ovi.com , come on!

Well well how can one connect to a existing jabber server server/account?
I can not believe Nokia would restrain their chat app that much to push OVI services? Come on! JABBER JABBER JABBER for all! =8)

Any plans to release Nokia Chat for S60 3.2 platform? It

Nokia phone charger is small enough that it was easy to take to the road. Other mobile phone manufacturers often make one mistake – put too much power supply from their chargers. But Nokia phone charger does not have this drawback. It can easily fit in your pocket.

no support for FP2 devices! it's a pity
