Mobile Web Server: new release 1.5 available

Written by Jukka Eklund. Cross-posted at S60 Living.

It’s that time of the year again, Mobile Web Server 1.5 beta has been released.

Brings easier access rights management, intelligent network handling, improved RSS feeds for effortless sharing and more.

This stuff might sound familiar, because we have discussed those here in the blog and other media. The access rights management page is a personal win for me, it makes life so much easier. Users are still added in the device UI, that’s an architectural feature we couldn’t change anymore.

The new RSS feed is really something to check out. With that you can share content, contextual information or even your own custom feed if you have one. Because the feed is put together and served via the mymobilesite.net service, it is always available even when your site is down. You will find the feed by logging in at mymobilesite.net, and navigating to Edit account -> Feed settings. There are some defaults set up, but you should tune it to your liking.

For you developer types out there, we have now opened up the possibility to add own custom (Python) applications into the MWS framework. This means that your own application can utilize the security framework and be shown in the MWS menu just like the other apps. Head over to MWS wiki to read the tutorial and to get the example applications. There are also a couple of new REST APIs created for Calendar (checking calendar data and making new requests).

Last but not least, check out our new promo video:

BTW. I am actually away this week, mostly without net access (can you believe it!). But don’t worry, my colleagues are reading all the comments and replying to you as necessary.

@Jukka: Thank you for this information regarding the 6110; I thought I messed something up during one of the first installs. Good to know it's not my fault.
I tried the 127.0.0.1-workaround, didn't work either. There seems to be a routing problem: The browser looks for 127.0.0.1 on the public internet, which results in the same error message I get when selecting "view in browser" directly from MWS.
It's OK, though, I can live with that as long as I know there's nothing I can do about it, anyway. Just one thing more that makes me want to meet the person responsible for the 6110 face to face in an empty room. ;)

Hi, for specific album no, but you can access your own mobile site with your mobile browser and do the transfer there ... while in MWS app select option -> view in browser and it will be opened.
2nd way to do is that you share either phone or memory card to someone(s) and configure your camera to save pictures to preferred location. Benefits are; you can easily change memory used in camera and select weather you like to share pictures to be taken or not.

Ben V: If my memory server me right, the 'view in browser' not working in 6110 is a problem in that device which couldn't be solved on our end. Make sure you have closed any other Internet connections open, and also try to open URL http://127.0.0.1 manually on the browser if it helps.

Anonymous, you're right MWS doesn't edit pics for you. Maybe the video could be shortened and highlight the easy sharing part. What do you think, Alex? :)

BTW:

When I create a custom album on the web server: Is there a way to add pictures to this album on my phone rather than via the web interface?

It would be so cool to use this as a way to control which pictures are available to the public (or via RSS).

The promo is kinda silly, since most of the time is spent editing the photos, which you don't do with MWS.
It's a cool application, but i'm assuming its not editing pictures for you on the fly.

@Jorma, thank you for your reply. "view in browser" never worked for me on my 6110, no matter which version of the MWS I tried. I always get my carrier's error message about the site not being accessible. So what I need to do is to access the page using its official URL, which is slow, expensive and creates network traffic only to access the device I'm holding in my hand... works, but not an option. ;)

Using the phone memory as "shared folder" does work, of course, but is only a clumsy workaround because this way you can only distinguish between "public" and "private". Adding pictures to folders from the menu in the gallery would allow for better access control: take image, afterwards move it to (rather: tag it, as it wouldn't be moved anywhere) "public", "family", "friends", .... just a thought.
