Introducing Nokia Maps 3.0 with Maps on Ovi (the first beta releases)

Written by: Mari Kesti & Juha Kantola, Nokia Maps team.

Hi there all Beta Labs users,

We are now happy to give the new Maps 3.0 beta into your hands. First thing you will notice is the new look and feel of our basic map. Colours of the map are now better and performance improvements are easy to detect when panning & zooming the map. Try out zooming higher up and you'll see that there is much more road and city information available. In close zooming levels we have the new cool 3D landmarks visible in major cities. Totally new for mobile devices are the terrain maps. Check for example the Alps or any other mountain rage near you.

Our maps are now also available in the web under Nokia

Comments

Are there any plans to update the Auto Navigation 500? Are there plans for Maps 3.0 to eventually work on it?

INstalled but will not run, get system error, any ideas?

I tried to install twice and it is not working on my N85. Thanks Nik for the solution for me to remove it.

@Marc Fargas: "Hi, I

@pipacs

You are right. It

Works with 6210 navigator and N85
HowTo: first delete complete "cities" folder on your card, then install maps. when installed, lauch maps an close it. then open the new maps loader and load the new maps.

@Nash
Any update as to when the fixed beta will be available for the N85 users who had updated their maps 2 using the sis update file?

Hi all,

Firstly apologies to all those of you who have encountered problems when installing Maps 3.0 beta. The first Maps 3.0 update package we released (via Maps Updater) did not correctly update the Maps if you had previously installed Maps 2.0 from a .sis file.

This bug in the update package has now been corrected and new version is available (again via Maps Updater), so now it's safe to install Maps 3.0 beta even on top of older .sis installation. Also, running the Maps Updater again will fix the problem for those of you who don't have Maps working on their phones due to bug.

Br,
Juha

Some more info.

You can "force" Nokia Maps 3.0 use map data on your memory card if you disable network access. Please fix this. :D

@Sim

You shouldn't be downloading anything from Beta Labs if you aren't prepared for the risks involved. It is clearly marked as an early release, if you want a stable version you will just have to wait for the final. The purpose of Beta Labs is to get good feedback whilst it's not too late to act on it.

Oh, and I can not download voice guidance files using my N85.

Progress bar for download stays blank. I am trying via Map Loader next.

Fantastic software but whats amazing is that Nokia released a USD1000 phone that not only have performance issues, even the latest Nokia software has compatibility issues!! The N96 that I bought is only worth in the trash bin!!

"We don't recommend using the N96" hell that says it all, the N96 SUCKS. Not being FP1 compatible SUCKS.

Website interface ROCKS!

Whats the best way to install this?
i tried installing it several times on my N78 and always shows error when launching it..
i even tried to hard reset my phone and formated my memory card.
still the same error appears when launched.

Ok I've recovered (mostly) Nokia Maps to version 2.0 .. however I still have one minor outstanding issue .. the Icon and app name show as Smart2Go and its a generic # icon .. how to pick the real icon and change the name to Nokia Maps?

TIA .. and Thanks Nik .. for the how to

I have downloaded the maps via the Maps Loader.
Started Maps, navigated tot he place i am at present.

Exited Maps, reopened it. I am back in space looking down towards the earth! Why did it not open at my last view?

Also, as soon as i opened maps, it gave me the "Error Downloading" error in maps, and after a certain time, the Blue popup message box gave the HTTP Error message (Which is probably the failed sync for POI).

@Alsiladka: what is your ovi username? I will then ask the team J

@localhost: "It would also be great if the person who added the browser check over at http://maps.ovi.com/services/integrated would have tested this a bit better. I

I'm getting a "not enough memory" error when I try to install it on an N85. I deleted the Cities folder as someone above recommended.

My N78-1 failed to get maps 3.0 work. After the installation successfully completed, when I open the maps it gave me "system error".
I managed to restore back to maps 2.0 by using Nik's instructions. I repeatedly tried to upgrade to 3.0 but everytime same error and the program icon changed to a compass too.
I would appreciate should anyone successfully installed it on N78 to share your tricks here. Thank you.

Same problem as Chris Si, have installed the new loader over the last version and still get the same error about not being able to get enough information off the phone.
I am have now removed both V3 map loader and map updater and will try again with fresh installs.

Welcome to the new 'Nokia Alpha Labs'...
Support for Mac or FP1 devices? Nope!
Installing via a Wintel PC using some ancient procedures like an exe-file and using MoO only with IE???

So I won't spend any time and money on this.
Maps was a good alternative - until now. So if I have to pay for navigation, I'll give my money to a company which cares a little bit more about their customers.

It's great to know that the Drive&Walk license is available for Colombia. It would be even better if there were any maps available for Colombia to use the license! :D

I've installed this over N95 and can't recover to version 2, even deleting the Cities and QF then installing version 2 does not reinstall. Any help would be appreciated?

For some reason when I first installed (from Applications update on my phone, not here!) it worked!

Are those maps from year 2000? Many roads are still missing atleast in Finland. Same roads that f.ex. TomTom had already couple years ago. What's the point release a new version with old maps? I rather see good road coverage than some 3D images of buildings. Is the map data already updated or will there be some updates on that?

@Jukka: route planner on the web will be there shortly. Best, J

I haven't been able to check out Nokia Maps 3.0 yet (I am a very proud owner of a Nokia E71), but I have a feature request for 3.0 anyways:

When you are navigating somewhere and you notice you need to go to a gas station to make it to your destination, there is no quick way (in 2.0) to add it to the route. You need to stop navigating, go to POI, select gas station, select one of them... it seems very unpractical to do that while driving, not to mention it's very dangerous.

I have been using Nav4All before, and even in this extremely simple software you can navigate to the nearest gas station with only one key press. When you have reached the gas station, the navigation automatically jumps back to your original destination, which is really straightforward.

I would really appreciate seeing something like this in 3.0, it shouldn't be too hard to implement it anyways. I trust you guys can do that in the blink of an eye! :-)

On a related note, please specify the term "soon" in context of FP1 support, there are MANY people waiting for it!

The press release explicitly mentions route planning on the web, which is not there at the moment?

It seems like Beta Labs became a download source for every kind of people.
We are here to really test and contribute to mature solutions, it's not like GMail. All of us are welcome to contribute, but we have to follow the rules (see "Compatibility and system requirements") and take the risk (Bug-o-meter says Maps 3.0 is "Early release, many known issues")...

You wrote navigation licences work normally in the beta version of Maps 3.0, whats about the traffic licenses??
Thanks

Installed ok. But when i click on the Maps icon. i get a system error an it exits.

FYI:

I've tested this new version of Nokia Maps on my N96 (Firmware v11) and it seems to work well over 3G for maps and I've managed to sync favourites with the website, but it doesn't seem to recognise any maps downloaded using the Maps Loader app on the PC.

And excellent, no mention in my App. Manager, cannot remove it using the "C" key.

The updater wants to download and install the Maps app again, giving it a shot.

Great work, bricked the Maps on my N85!!

The maps icon and name went away, now there is the unknown app icon, the puzzle piece with the red block and the name has changed to Smart2go!

When i start it, gives me an error message -
Application Closed :
smart2go
CONE 14

Thanks for the info Juha.

For some strange reason I can not get (download/install) voice guidance to work. Any ideas?

It has installed and opened fine, though there are a few caveats.

Even since the failed install yesterday, and downgrade to Maps 2, a strange blue colored message box is displayed on top of the screen in the Maps and the GPS app. Even today, after updating to Maps 3 beta, the blue message box still displays and notifies me of the successful connections and link layer opened and stuff.

What is it?

@Sim - I'm also having problems with voice guidance - I use Maploader to load on the device, but when I go to Settings>Navigation, there is "no data" shown there.

Otherwise 3.0 works very well on N79. Favorites sync is especially nice. Thanks!

@b0nstio

Like Nik wrote:

Hi all,

While the beta did not work on my N85 either (remember: it

Due to constant crashing and lack of voice navigation (despite having installed the voices) I wish to remove this and return to Maps 2.0. I cannot. "Removing failed". This sucks big time. It's the first and last time I try a beta from Nokia. A phone restore from earlier backup has failed to help either.

Some information on manual removal would be greatly appreciated.

Conclusions: constant program crashes and lack of voice guidance. No joy for me. Using N85.

@juha

Well. I downloaded Slovenian female. All is working now.

But hey! Slovenian language is useless for me. I can not download any Finnish version for voice guidance.

How much should I pay to you Juha that you would contact me via email or other method? Huh!

Hi
Got it installed & seemingly working ond N96, finally.
Tried a lot, but the key seems to follow some steps of the instructions given to reestablish N Maps 2.0:

Thanks for the latest updates. :)

Still no Finnish female for me.

Hi Maps Team,
I installed Nokia Maps 3 on my N96, updated course! Sometimes it works, sometimes does not work! Sometimes you turn me!
It may be the fault of the lack graphics accelerator?
Thanks!

Would be any possibility to show tracks (kml, etc) ?
it would be very interesting

@Sim, I have Finnish voice commands working - not crashing I mean, but I don't understand a word :P

Could you check whether you've got all files extracted?

\cities\diskcache\voices\finnish with 2 files and 1 dir
\_finnish_male with 119 files

Maybe the server downtime left you with partial files...

Hi friends ! I don't understand but on N96 the nokia maps 3.0 beta doesn't work ???? Can you say something about our works on n96 ???
best regard

Hi guys - any news on when a more stable version will be released ? Also when it will be stable enough for the N96. I am sure a lot of fellow N96 users also would like to know this ?

Dear Mari Kesti & Juha Kantola, Nokia Maps team,

Ive successfully installed Maps 3.0 onto an N85, with the minor errors as reported, no problem there. I did the installation on firmware 10. There seemed to be a bug on my device, i was not completely sure till i updated to V.11. So im positive this bug is directly related to Maps 3.0 as others over symbian-freak have reported to me they did not have this issue before and after firmware update, with out the use of maps 3.0 Here is the link to a picture that will express my report.
http://share.ovi.com/media/Snowy.NokiaBetalabsSc/Snowy.10163
To add, ive seen the same thing in other places, basically when it comes to the digits.

I would like to know, how much space does this app take?

Hi!

I have added screenshot from my Map Loader.

Is there any particular reason for missing Finnish female.

http://img244.imageshack.us/my.php?image=612ly9.png

I think that the best way will be join two programs NMU and NML into one program.

I even re-installed the 11.047 fw, still the same :-(

best regards, Nik

Almost there!

Maps Updater now finds my N85 and installs, but fails near the end with 'Cannot update the maps application. Unspecified error (1).' The phone also alerts about an installation failure.

Maps 3 appears to run, but it it still uses the old icon.

Maps Loader 3 sees the phone now (Maps loader 2 didn't) and loaded a small country successfully.

Merry Christmas!

I have two suggestions for improvement of the address search:

1) Currently when taking the address from a contact the address stored there must be an exact match of the address stored in the maps db. This is not always the case when it comes to non-alphabetic characters: Sometimes there are hyphens between parts of a name and sometimes there aren't. An example I found in Helsinki is 'Juhoni Ahon Tie' vs. 'Juhona-Herttuan Tie'. I suggest the matching algorithm of the address search should completely disregard differences in non-alphabetic characters to achieve higher matching rates.

2) I have tried to use an address from my contacts like 'Abc Street 18/2/22' (house #18, entrance #2, door #22), this ended up in he address search as '18222', preventing a match. Assuming this would not impede proper address matching in other countries I suggest that only the piece up to the first number separator be used for address matches.

best regards to all team members, have fun, Nik

Two more thingies:

1) Only if I'm online when exiting Maps 3 my N85 freezes for about 15 secs, totally ignoring every kepress - but the keyboard locks when closing the lid during this time. I does not happen when offline, and I'm only using WLAN online, so can't comment on 'online via network' behaviour.

2) Would it be possible to have offline address search functionality, maybe using additional data that could be preloaded using Map Loader?

thanx, Nik

@erol, this sounds plausible, thx for the info & workaround!

Hi Maps Team,
I have another questions: At the N96, in E:mass storage, where find the downloaded maps with Nokia Map Loader and how do I set them?
Thanks again!

@Alan
reinstall it, it will work. I dont recommend it, still issues. Takes to much memory an puts a major bug on ur phone, check my comment #139. Till its fixed i wouldnt touch it, thier loss on my feedback for the moment.

Do you have any plans for Nokia 5800XM?

Your thoughts and response would be highly appreciated.

Cheers,

Sim

I tried to install on a 6650 and I get "Cannot update the maps application. The installer is not supported by your phone(114)."

I have Maps 1.0 installed. Do I have to install 2.0 and then upgrade to 3.0?

Even i had to get reinstall Maps 2 over the Maps 3 beta to get maps to work again...

Team, before more users brick their maps app, it would be better if you either update it pronto or pull the download.
It is time for the Damage Control mode.

You should have some quality control there.

I installed this on my N85. I tried open the app, but only FP2 mark is spinning for few secs. Application does not start!

AND you cannot even uninstall this. So atm this so called MAP application rendered my Nokia Maps useless.

You should provide info HOW TO UNINSTALL or RESTORE previous version. This is utterly rubbish from Beta Labs. I am using N85.

Waiting eagerly some more info from DEVS!

It doesn't install on a Nokia 6220 classic (FP2!) :(

On the first install started by map updater I get "Unable to install. Component is built in". It then does a second install which fails with "Update error".

The map updater window on the pc then says "Cannot update the maps application. The installer is not supported by your phone (114)"

One feature that I would like to see is inclusion of paths like cycleways, bridle paths and footpaths which are available for pedestrian and or bike use. These paths are typically recorded in paper maps or maps that you have to print out. It would be nice to have them on devices likely to be carried by cyclists and pedestrians i.e. mobile phones!

Nokia OVI maps plug in... I don't use IE on my machine, so don't launch it after starting installing the plugin for firefox!

Well, I can not install/download voice guidance for this PRE ALPHA release. Pure crap. Ugh. :D

Congratulation Nokia, for winning the award of "having the most different types of UI for softwares from the same company for the same catagory".

Another app from Nokia, another new UI. Have you people never heard of a seamless user experience across different apps?

Nokia PC Suite, Nokia Software Updater, Nokia Map Loader 2, Nokia Map Loader 3 all come with a different menu bar and different looking Close / Minimize button.

Why cannot you guys follow a similar patter for the similar apps?

Please note that i am not comparing OVI Suite or Nseries Suite, they should be different. but atleast the normal PC Apps?

After failing to get Nokia Maps 3.0 Beta to work on my N78, I am also seeing the decimal point changed to a square when checking memory with file manager.

Hi all,

The web front end team sends their thanks for all the feedback so far.

Just a note on OS and browser support : at this early stage, we are providing plug-ins for IE (6/7) and Firefox (2/3) on Windows only.

Unfortunately, Firefox derivatives are not supported yet. The Mac version is very much on the way - we are aiming to support both Safari and Firefox on the Mac as soon as possible.

In the meantime, keep the comments & suggestions coming, and be on the lookout for a bunch of nifty features on maps.ovi in the very near future. ;)

Cheers!

Found a few minor issues on my N85:

1) a long list of matching streets (in the address search) seems to extend below the bottom of the screen, when scrolling down the highlight disappears at the bottom.
2) upon every exit of Maps 3 my N85 is completely frozen for ~15 secs, then it returns to normal.
3) sometimes when zooming in, Maps would zoom out again instantly; e.g. I press the + button twice, it zooms in twice, instantly zooms out again once or twice.

I'll better not list all the things I tried that worked flawlessly, would take up too much room :-)

Heh,

I can't believe how many people are complaining that this BETA version of Maps isn't working to their expectations?!?!

IT'S Beta!! Instead of just complaining formulate some constructive feedback, why isn't it working, what procedures have you followed, at what point did things go wrong? With our help as a community this can only get better!

My experiences are as follows...

N96 (Yes I'm aware its not supported but I'm a glutten for punishment.)
Installed fine, no issues at all (FW 10.065) However, when trying to install the map data it wouldn't load.

6210 Navigator
This drove me batty!!! First of all the Maps updater refused to see the handset plugged in. I ended up deleting all USB Drivers, reinstalling the firmware via NSU, formatting the memory card, uninstalling/reinstalling Maps 3.0 Updater and Map Loader before it would work.

Now its installed and all Maps are showing.

There seems to be a LOT of lag when browsing round the maps. I haven't got the option to install voice, so no voice guidance (I have a one year licence that has carried over with no hassles)
Have tried the route simulator but no joy with voice there either obviously.
My part of the world (New Zealand) doesn't seem to have any of the new 2D/3D POI, but the maps themselves have a lot more detail and the roads aren't running through water now where previously they did.
Scanning round in 3D mode is a darn sight quicker.
Terrain maps don't look to be available for NZ yet either.
As others have mentioned the Online Maps sync works well. Had no problems d/ling and installing the plugin, seems to work quicker on IE than FF on Vista.

All in all I've found the program thus far to be alright, obviously theres plenty of changes to be made but I'm looking forward to being able to add my thoughts to thse changes also.

Hi all,
How do I fix the period/decimal changing into a square after
removing Maps 3 and returning to Maps 2?? Device is N79, newest software.
Thank you!

I upgraded the firmware on my N85 to V.11, after that I successfully installed Maps 3.0 Beta over Maps 2.0. On first run it crashed. I launched Nokia Map Loader 3.0 and after some scanning it found the phone and Maps 3.0 started to run normally. After that I uploaded a couple of maps and noted that I have a problem with "." (full stop) sign in my N85, instead of "." I could see a square (denoting some unknown character). This square I could see in calculator (like 5[]45 instead of 5.45, where [] is a square character) and in all apps which show the free space I saw "free 6[]1 GB" instead of "free 6.1 GB".
I restarted the phone a couple of times, now this problem is floating, sometimes I see the full stop and sometimes the square. This definitely relates to the installation of Maps 3.0.

Looking forward to see more stable apps from Nokia.

Great stuff and timing rocks too! Though I would still like to see a plain SIS package, now you are blocking out Mac & Linux users?

Hi,
I'd really like if OVI simply checked for the word "Gecko" in the User Agent, not for "Firefox"... You cannot access Maps on Ovi with any firefox derivative for that (ie: Iceweasel).

PLEASE Do proper UA checks! ;)) (This is the same as saying: Do not test for "Safari" test for "Webkit" ;)

Great stuff. Suggestions / features i'd love to see: maps like GT Fillari Suomi with its suggested cycle routes included. Also, projects like "Rome Reborn" to be downloadable on my device...
cheers,
jussi

Waiting for my N95's turn

Did not find any update on my E71...

@Tommi

You should really pay more attention to control these Beta Labs apps. Quality is better than quantity. Seriously. This time Nik rescued you!!

Great. POI's sync is a feature that had to be implemented a long time ago!.

Looking forward to check it out when it's possible to use it on my N82/Mac combo :)

Is it now possible to plan a route from addresses in the phone's address book? That would be a very welcome addition.

j'ai install

Making the website (http://maps.ovi.com) work with Mac and Linux should be TOP priority. Nokia doesn't really know anything about providing services and should learn a lesson from Google.

@BrentR I had the problem with installing maps on my N96, but if you turn network connection offline and restart maps it will start to use the maps you installed on the mass memory.

Nokia Maps on N96 is working fine for me with this slight online problem of it not using the stored maps.

@Lupa:

"It seems like Beta Labs became a download source for every kind of people."

I guess this is what you get when you publicize a new application in Barcelona and all over the blogosphere. I don't think this is the fault of "every kind of people" at all.

Here's the deal. It says "Memory Full Delete Some Data from Phone Memory" It attempts to continue installing when I click OK and then it later says "Unable to Install Not Enough Memory."

How much free memory is required? I had about 28MB free before attempting to install. Again it is an N85.

@fr

Thanks a lot for your clever note. Like I said this time I managed solve this issue using Nik's help.

But, fr, please try to use some Beta Lab's software which will brick your phone. And for god's sake my N-series history begins from N70 including N79, N80, N82 N85 and N95. I have tested plenty of apps with these phones. But this release was pure crap.

P.S. I do not any TOS notes from you fr.

Worked like a charm for my N79! Seems faster overall, and annoying prompts in the start are removed.

Anxiously waiting for it to be available on my E71!!!

I have a question for either Mari Kesti or Juha Kantola of the Nokia Maps Team.
I live in Bermuda. It's small, but it has one of the highest GDP in the world and is a global center for Insurance and Reinsurance. In fact the CEO of Nokia has been here and a lot of the business people who come to Bermuda are carrying Nokia phones. Ok, that said. Now try and find BERMUDA in Nokia maps!!

So my question is, as a developer, how do I improve "BERMUDA" as a location, i.e update the level of detail, (ADD ROADS EVEN) or develop 3D buildings to appear on Nokia Maps for Point and Find locations?

Look up BERMUDA on wiki. It may be small, but like UAE, it is a wealthy place with a lot of Nokia phones.

So, how can I help to develop this location and add detail.

Thanks,

Mike Davis

Ok re-installed new maps updater and the error is
"Cannot get enough information about the phone (3).

No update info found for the phone (16). The phone appears not to be supported".

N95 8Gb with latest V2 loaded from sis file.

Well here we are again, us N96 have to wait, as we are being overlooked by Nokia, as they still prefer to release beta stuff to other FP platforms, and keep us in the dark.
N96 as a flagship phone ha ha, I think that statement is appalling, nokia forgot the flagpole, and left are flags in the mud.
The N96 is the worst phone ever, and im on v12 firmware, and its still buggy, and nokia havent even released v11 yet!!.
I so wish id waited for the blackberry storm, at least they test there devices before launch

I installed it to N85, everything OK, except that language is now english. In your instructions it was said that "open installion and change language", but there was no option to change it.

searching addresses is now much better as sw shows list of addresses that fit the criteria. There is how ever one quite annoying "bug" if you first enter road name and then edit the city name the street name is still displayed sw is only searching the city and not that particular street.

also when testing 3.0 on N78 and 2.0 on E90 side to side it seemed that 3.0 was very often jumping on the fly from highway I was driving to some parallel little road. Is there some difference in the GPS filtering?

Glinja no one is point a gun at your head and forcing you to purchase the phone..dun like it then sell it and get a different phone..

I am using an N95 8Gb with latest V2 software installed from sis file, has anyone figured out how to install V3 in this configuration? Or are we waiting for a new beta version to be released?

Thanx for the quick fix, the new version now works on my N85, but it seems not to find the maps preloaded with Maps Loader 3 - it always downloads them via the network.

take it easy, Nik

Very impressed on my work 6650, but would love to see it on the e71. You say soon for FP1, any more detail on timelines ?

The new version still fails to install on a 6220c (fw 03.46) with Maps 2.0 in ROM. Same errors as before.

I too would very much appreciate if I could browse my contacts, and just press "Drive here", that would be so much easier than managing adresses once more in Maps.

For business meetings etc., it would also be a lot simpler, if I could do the same from the calendar. On a meeting event in the calendar, I would like to be able to press "Drive to location", it would be so easy.

Are the maps crew working on this?

Regards, Kasper

It would be very nice, if working version for N85 is released _soon_. So the anger against Beta Labs could vanish...

Still cannot install in N95 8Gb with latest V2 software from sis file here. Same error as before..
Any special procedure we should be aware of?

Thanks

@Nik

>> but it seems not to find the maps preloaded with Maps Loader 3 - it always downloads them via the network.

That's by design: maps 3 uses a map format different from maps 2. So the map loader not only updates the maps application but also all the mapa data that you already installed.

Frank

@Jon
What did You like most about it so far?

@Frank

That's why I used the new Map Loader *3* that came with the Updater (and on close scrutiny it seems it wrote exactly that).

This is the complete sequence:

1) used the Updater - updated app and my preloaded maps
2) Maps 3 works, but loads maps via network
3) used Map Loader *3* to re-load the maps
4) still loads maps from network

have fun, Nik

Hi!

I have same problem as Nik does. All map data is downloaded from internet. Preinstalled (3.0) maps does not work.

What's next? Hehe. :P

Have tried exiting maps thrice uptil now, twice via the right softkey, and once via the options menu. No change, still the WiFi icon is blinking, when i have an active and connectable wifi connection already configured and granted access to.

Ohk, so when i gave the exit command, the sync started in the bacground, giving the user no notification of the process having started.

After the three failed attempts to exit, i finally opened the Handy Taskman and force closed Maps, but it was then that i saw the Sync icon in the icon bar in FP2.

After again waiting for 2 minutes more, the blue popup message box returned, gave me the "HTTP Error" message, and maps exited itself.

My maps had not been loaded yet, i just started the app, was browsing through the options and found the option to sync to Ovi.

On setting up the username password and giving the go ahead for the sync, the synchronization process started but was stuck right at the beginning for about 5 minutes and then ended with a syncronization incomplete message.

"....so now it

hi..
Thanks for all
The app run ok in 6220 classic but when i found in a maploader a italian language i don't found..
Please put the Italian language...

Some more info.

I have files at \cities\diskcache\voices\finnish\finnish_male

But I can not use finnish male. When using Map Loader there is no finnish female, only male.

So, all other voices are working for me except finnish ones. :)

@Nik, Sim and others,
You are correct, for some reason, if used in on-line mode, the Maps client does not recognise all map data downloaded to the device with Maploader, but starts to download data again. We are investigating and will provide a fix as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can use the client in off-line mode, so no download will happen.

Br,
Juha

It seems that the N85 now has firmware available so you can reflash it back to stage 1 .. so thanks for that Nokia!

I did a clean firmware reinstall on my N95-1 to the latest version.

But still get "Cannot get enough information about the phone (3).

No update info found for the phone (16). The phone appears not to be supported"

When trying to update the phone.

Great news. Can't wait for the FP1 version to come out. Hopefully without the issues mentioned above.

It would also be great if the person who added the browser check over at http://maps.ovi.com/services/integrated would have tested this a bit better. I'm a happy Firefox 3 user but get rejected with the message to use either IE6/IE7/Ff2 or Ff3.

Known issue: Nokia Maps Updater will not work if you have installed Maps 2.0 to your phone as a sis file. This will be fixed.

> it would be better if you either update it pronto or pull the download.

I'll add this warning to the download and compatibility info sections. Hopefully that's enough...

Apologies for all you whose Maps we temporarily broke. And thanks Nik for helping others in how to recover!!

The N85 FW update is out? Had been waiting for a very long time!!

@Nik

Thank you so much Nik! You saved my day (and night too). :)

Beta Labs ppl should remove this piece of crap from public.

Hi all,

While the beta did not work on my N85 either (remember: it's a beta!) I managed to remove it and get Maps 2 working again. Don't know if all the steps are required, but this sequence worked:

1) Delete the 'cities' folder and the 'qf' file on the memory card - this gets rid of Maps 3 data stuff.
2) Reinstall Nokia_Maps_2.0_4503_3.2_u.sis
3) Start Maps - no maps available - close Maps - this recreates the required directories.
4) Use Map Loader 2 to load new Maps.
5) Enjoy!

I guess some of us (N85 users :-) will have to wait a bit...

have fun, Nik

Well, installs well on N78 if you follow instructions(which I didn't the first time..) but when phone gets GPS connection and maps tries to show my location, nokia maps or the whole phone crashes. :)

@Sim and Nik

Thanks!!!!!! Thanks very much - now up and running. Very grateful.

For everyone with an N95 like me, Maps 3.0 is not available yet. That is why trying to install Maps 3.0 gives you a "Cannot get enough information about the phone message"

The N95 and many other N Series phones are running an OS known as S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, which the blog post above says," but we haven

Sorry but i dont understand the reply...
Why i dont found a Italian vocal guide???
Please help me..

I am amazed at how many babys r out there. I have always encourged for more users to participate in beta labs understanding the agreement before any service software use. In my hands i have the n95 n85 & 5800, do u hear me crying. Now i understand why beta labs has stayed hidden and have a much greater appreciation for it. If you dont like it wait for the final product. Now let me get it workin on the n85 so i can leave some constructive feedback ;)

Nokia guys, were are you?

one issue id like to comment on.
For the N85, while plugged to Map Loader, when i attempt to delete maps from storage, it would abruptly stop and inform me of an issue with the connectivity. I assure you everything is well placed in order.

I am still seeing problems on the N96, the worst of them is that many times it won't see any satellite, while google maps sees 5 to 8 immediately. I have to exit maps 3.0 and restart it a few times before it will get a fix on the satellites.

Hi all,

The problem with voice guidance that many of you have commented should now be fixed. It was actually caused by a server problem, so no client update needed. In Maps application, just go on-line and then select Options->Tools->Settings->Navigation->Voice guidance and the client will download the list of available languages. After this you will be able to select the language you wish or use the languages downloaded with Maploader 3.0.

Br,
Juha

Not happy about not requesting connection method for map updates. That needs to change. N85 install kinda failed again - so I give up for now.

Heh!

Usually BETA products have their basic functionality!
This is PRE-ALPHA.

-no working voice guidance
-map data is downloaded from network instead pre-loaded maps
-program crashes constantly, about 99% when I open it

PLEASE STOP mumbling what beta means. :D

@Juha

I can partly confirm that voice navigation can be downloaded from server. Only Finnish male though (not female).

After that, when starting navigation to certain address, phone WILL REBOOT!

Heheh. :D Should I laugh or cry?

on N85 app installs. But no voice guidance can be installed. Tools- Settings=Voice guidance shows empty list. And also via the new maploader 3.0 is does not work. No navigation possilbe therefore

@Dolf

Please try Tools-Settings-Voice guidance about 3 times (refresh sort of) at the row. You should have voices list then. Also please make sure that you have network access enabled. That worked for me.

(But I am still without Finnish voices)

This team wont get any presents from Santa. Lack of communication is bad for human race.

Just take a close look at PC Suite Beta team. They are living humans. Nokia Maps Alpha Team is typical example when dev team is from outer space and end users are still living on Earth.

Shame on you!

Still no luck. I deleted some files and it appeared to install, but now I'm getting the "System Error" messages when I try to start it on my N85.

In Nokia Maps 2.0 with enabled traffic information service, you can choose whether or not you want to be automatically re-routed. When you choose "always ask", the message appears on the screen, but there is absolutely no indication that it is there if you don't look at the screen for a while.

In Maps 3.0, I think it would be great if the question could be read aloud (TTS), thereby not only indicating that the question is in fact there, but also what kind of problem it is actually about.

PLEASE MAKE NOKIA MAPS 3.0 AVAILABLE ON FP1 DEVICES SOON! AND WOULD SOME NOKIA GUY ACTUALLY RESPOND IN HERE SO WE KNOW YOU'RE STILL READING?!

When turning to highway white text on green is not readable.
Maybe black text on green is better?

Please, make it compatible with macintosh and wins many mac users that is running to iPhone!!!

@Sim

Agreed. People are correct to complain if this software disables the mapping functionality entirely. Beta products should at least work to some degree. Continual crashing is not acceptable.

IMHO there also should be a documented removal route. Fortunately the kind people on this board have helped people like me remove a b0rk3d "beta" and replace it with the sluggish, yet working Maps 2.0.

GMai

Two time today i have had my N85 restart on opening Maps!

I second the idea. I have always found it annoying to connect for a search if my maps are already downloaded.
Especially in my case that i am stuck with t-mobie USA EDGE.
It conflicts with my active calls.

Anybody figure out how much space this application takes on the devices? Say 10, 15, 20 MB or even more???
Its hard to figure out on my N85, so much other crap is in the memory out of the box, its hard to figure whats used an where, for example the lowest i got it to was about 75MB, and there is another 10MB used somewhere else.(sorry i know a bit off topic.

I have a question for the Nokia Maps team.
What kind of feedback are you looking for?
Is it only concerning the new feature of 3.0
Or the overall program improvements in every department?
Such as changes and improvement following 1.0 & 2.0 development.

I for one do certainly not want to waste my time reporting feedback & suggestions not required nor do you need to hear it, i bet the same will go for most of the users.

I have noticed this in beta labs (except Nokia email) where specifics are not included or asked for. Make it more applicable for the both of us.

Thank You, awaiting your reply.

I found 2 problems :

1. Setup Nokia Maps Updater 1.0 beta 5 always wants to update my existing version of Nokia Maps despite I have the newest version.
2. I have a problem with install any voice - Nokia Maps don't see this instalation

> There is a rumour that Nokia have been hit by the current economic situation
> and are cutting back in certain areas. Hopefully this does not include the Betalabs,
> although it might explain their non existence since before Christmas.

Don't worry. We are going strong. Just being busy preparing the next new apps for launch (as well as some major updates) and finalizing the new website http://new.betalabs.nokia.com.

3.Map loader says that i have maps In version 0.1.18.0h but Nokia maps 3.0 after installation in section

Any news about the FP1 support? It's pretty funny that the demo video is shown on N95 8Gb, but it's actually not supported yet... And Google Maps works like a dream.

Hi!
How about to fix the problem with Maps Updater, because it doesn't even found my device, which was plugged with cable via PC Suite like it required?! I can't even install the Nokia Maps 3.0 beta on my Nokia N85 device (fw 11.047) not to mention I would like to try Maps 3.0.
Please, any ideas?
Best regards, SmashMix

@nik, this is a bug occuring when writing back map data on MMC and hence should happen only when you've downloaded some data.
to get rid of it, click the menu button once or twice and your device should respond normally.

thx

Hi eager to join the trial....any idea when E71 compatibility will be available?

Hi. I updated my N96 to 12.045 yesterday. Do you know if this addresses the issues with nokia maps, or do I still need to wait for a maps update?

Hi Maps Team,

in continuation of comments 168, 169 & 173: Suddenly for no apparent reason the new icon appeared and stayed for a while.

Later my N85 noticed some problem (not related to Maps) and forced me to turn it off and on - now the old icon is back and Maps won't start (just like #168)

I'm really looking forward to the next beta version :-)

I'm still getting the dreaded System Error after what appears to be a successful installation on my N85. To those who were able to get it working on your N85s, did you do anything special to get it working?

@alsiladka: we have checked whether everything is ok with your Ovi account. "I can tell that the user last synchronized on 2008-12-04, 09:09:06 UTC, with no apparent errors" . Pls feel free to always contact our care team by clicking on "Support" in the footer.

Hi, probs with N85 and maps 3.0, first when installing it says memory full and at the end of install it says can't install aplication.
Tried to install it five times and got it working finally but after booting my phone, it wouldn't open any more... Looked much better than v 2.0.. think i'll wait for some fixes before trying to install it again.... now going strong with maps 2.0
Good work nokia betalabs....Proud to be finnish ;)

Greetings all members,

I would just like to say hello and let you know that I'm happy to be a member - been a lurker long enough :)

Hope to contribute some and gain some knowledge along the way....

@Juha

I dont know if you have really tested this alpha release on N85. I tried to download voices via Map Loadet you announced server side update. Because I have to open this 3.0 version about 40 times, when only once program wont crash.

Maybe I should try few times more. Just got my 2.0 working. I must say that this is getting really boring, if you can not test at all...

There is something fishy when using 3.0 updater (for the sis). There must be some remnants from 2.0 version.

*edit*

tried to download voices via Map Loader before you announced server side fix. There was only Finnish male available (concerning Finnish users). I downloaded it, installed, but still no voice navigation. It seems my keyboard is eating half of messages lol.

Ill try again soon.

I tried today's update, but am still running into the same issues. For those who got it running on the N85, is a hard reset necessary?

In any case, after downgrading to Maps 2.0, I notice that there is less free space (about 12MB less) on internal memory than before. My guess is that installing 2.0 on top of 3.0 leaves some files. Does anyone know if there is a way to delete the excess files while I wait for a more stable beta?

Hi,

there is now an updated version available. It fixes the issue which Juha commented on the post #81. So the map downloading on top of already loaded maps is not happening anymore.

Br, Mari

@erol

Thanks alot for you heads up. :) I can not still find Finnish female voice. I can not use Finnish male either. I have updated my firmware/formatted my phone. Still no success. Well, this is beta, so I can handle with english female. :D

Tried to install on a N96 with fw 12.043 (Euro 1). Get an error from Map Updater. Strange that some users could install to N96 and got it work.
Currently using maps 2.
Any forecast on next beta update?

Don't know if anyone else has addressed this: when doing a search for a location off-line, there is no opportunity to "cancel" and it drives me nuts. The maps app locks up sometimes for several minutes until it determines it can't find a match. As well, why do searches list only matches within the local area? If I search for Amsterdam airport from my location in the south of NLDS, I get only one that is about 30 km away. Why will it not list all those within 200 km? There aren't that many. It's a pain searching the city and then doing a second search for the matches nearby.

Can I suggest some improvements for version 3?:

1) Enable zoom buttons for Nokia slide phones, on front cover. Uncomfortable to need to open the slide to zoom

2) Change search system: too slow, too bulky. Enable faster searches on street only or citiy only....show lookup results on partial strings

3) Enable "speed limit" maps and points, with alarms

Can anyone help? I upgraded to Maps 3.0 but am unable to launch it on my N85. it says there is not enough memory to start application. As suggested I even tried deleting the Cities and qf files but I get the same error message. What am I missing here? help!!

Just following up on a question asked by Nik on Dec. 7 that I don't think was answered: "Would it be possible to have offline address search functionality, maybe using additional data that could be preloaded using Map Loader?"

Is offline address searching supposed to work? I can successfully search for addresses only when I'm online. I'm running the Maps 3.0 Beta on an N78.

There is a rumour that Nokia have been hit by the current economic situation and are cutting back in certain areas. Hopefully this does not include the Betalabs, although it might explain their non existence since before Christmas.

Reading through the posts I see that some have managed to get 3.0 onto a 6220 (Classic) -- each I try Iget the 'copmponent built in' error.

I have Maps 2 installed and I recall that I installed that from a download. Do I have to remove that before installing 3.0 beta?

Thanks

Will

Hi Maps Team,

after enjoying the beta for quite some time now I need your help:

I had to reset my N85 (very hard reset - press green, 3, * and power on) and now Maps completely refuses to work.

Maps 2 gets to 30% then says Can't open program. Current version at nokia.com/maps - I downloaded 2.0 4503 3.2 from europe.nokia.com to install again, using my trick from comment 24, still not working.

And the Maps Update 1.0 beta 5 says No supported phone connected - so I can't get to Maps 3 either :-(

Could you please try to figure out how to repair this?

thx, Nik

Good to hear that! :)

tengo un nokia n76 y quisiera saber si le puedo colocar los mapas y como hacerlo, saludos.

Hi Nokia,
Just wondering if the Maps 3.0 for N95 users will be in the next launch. If so do you have a time frame?

Thanks
Niall.

Note to self. Always always read compatibility issues of any new beta releases, and read comments from other peoples experience with them on their phones, especially the darn N85.

Please also look into the usage of screen space, on devices like the E71 a lot of the screen is wasted:

- The lower bar showing the functions of the left and right softkey and the navigation keys: unnessessary, you can memorize that (maybe let the user decide whether or not to hide it).

- The informations on the right (distance, speed, duration) perfectly fit on the bottom of the screen. Same goes for the download and availability information.

- The next navigation instruction should be in the top right corner.

The freed space allows the user to see much more of the map, the REALLY important information.

I have created a screenshot of Nokia Maps 2.0 on the E71 and a simple mock-up of the changes I mentioned above.

Current look: http://images.bliesekow.de/nokia-maps-current.jpg

Mock-up: http://images.bliesekow.de/nokia-maps-mockup.jpg

Please consider these changes for 3.0, it would be really helpful.

:(
Tried the instructions to go back to version 2 - total disaster. Now Maps updater won't detect my N96, nokia maps won't start and asks me to install the latest version from maps.nokia.com, and maps loader 2.0 won't detect my N96 also. I've already done a hard reset, but didn't help.
Result - no maps 2 or 3.

It installs the map updates on the phone memory and then obviously aborts download stating limited memory.

How do I get the map updater to start storing the maps on the mass memory ?

@jbernardo: I have the same problem, see #168. But only on my laptop - my workstation was able to update to the beta, see #173.

Try to find a different PC, maybe it works for you too. Mind you: when I turn my phone off and on again, Maps 3 is gone and I have to update again.

i need help, i still cant download any voices from maps v3 :( can any 1 help with fixing this? joechots@gmail.com thanx...

Nokia Maps Updater BUG REPORT (but posted here, as there is a work-around, so trying to get maximum exposure to readers).
-

The PC Client (needed to side-load the phone application, due to your new way of doing things), has a major time-bomb bug.

It is today, as at 1st March, giving a "This program has expired" error, when trying to launch it, on the PC.

Other users are experiencing this too, from all accounts.

A quick PC clock roll back to 28th February, seems to fix this. So it looks like an oversight on the part of Nokia.

Additionally, if there IS a new version now, then it's still not really our fault, as the web page the error message directs you to, is the normal Maps 2.0 page, so that's not much use or help either.

Just thought I should both point this pout, and flag up the PC clock change work-around, how to fix it for now, for the benefit of readers.

Following up on my previous post about whether offline address searches are currently supported. I just noticed it works fine as long as I leave the "State" field blank, and use only the other fields, i.e., "Country/Region", "City/Post code", "Street", and "Number". Sounds like a bug in the current beta version.

How do I fix the period/decimal changing into a square.

Installed Nokia Maps v3.0 onto my E71 with UK Maps only and its running fine and syncing no probs :)

Thanks

This blog is nonsense, nobody at Nokia is replying anymore

Hi... i am facing a problem with this prg in nokia n95.
when i open it i get an error message" not enough memory application closed"....
but i v enough memory to start it as i think" 121mb free in phone mem & 1G free in memory card"
thanks for ur efforts....

i second you

PLEASE MAKE NOKIA MAPS 3.0 AVAILABLE ON FP1 DEVICES SOON! AND WOULD SOME NOKIA GUY ACTUALLY RESPOND IN HERE SO WE KNOW YOU

I can't sign in to http://maps.ovi.com/services/integrated when using FF3. Rest of Ovi.com works fine, and I can sign in when using IE6.

When I search for my home address using danish notation, "streetname number" FF3 find it, but IE6 can only find the street name. If I use US syntax "number streetname", IE6 finds my home address and presents it as "streetname number", like I normally read it.

Would love to test on my phone but it's an N82, so no go.

where is the link to download
