Nokia Email service graduates as part of Nokia Messaging

Written by Davis Fields, Nokia Messaging team

Hello,

It’s Davis Fields and I’m happy to announce the official release of Nokia Messaging. Please go to http://email.nokia.com to download the latest version. I’m also proud to say that we are graduating the program from Beta Labs. The Nokia Messaging team has gained so much from you, our users, during our time here. We started our beta in August 2008 with the first release of Nokia Email service. We will be rolling out the service on a country by country basis starting with Australia, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom and Venezuela. You are free to continue using the service until it’s commercially available in your location.

Here are the highlights of this release:

I can say that most of these features came from your requests, and I hope you enjoy this new release. I can also say that we are by no means done with our work – this is the first official release but we will continue to regularly offer large updates to Nokia Messaging. I want to acknowledge specifically the omission of HTML in this release – we have spent plenty of time figuring out the best way to implement HTML and we are close to delivering it, but not in this release. It’s an important feature to us.

Finally, though we’re graduating from Beta Labs today, I will continue to be listening to your feedback and keeping up the dialogue. You will be able to find future postings from me regarding Nokia Messaging at the S60 Living blog. I will continue to read and reply to emails sent to nokiaemail [at] nokia [dot] com. As always, thanks for your feedback. Enjoy the holidays and the new release of Nokia Messaging!

FOUND A FIX FOR SWAPPING DATA CONNECTIONS:

- during client setup, set the connection as default. this will mean that the email client will take the system default connection (in my case home wifi).
- to swap to 3G data or other wifi connection: open the browser (or other application that needs to go OTA). if you have set data connection to "always ask", the S60 will ask you what connection you would like to use...select (for example) 3G.
- close browser and connection.
- email client will now automatically connect to the last data connection.

Hope this helps!!!

I'm still (since last week) having the "500: Failure - Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?" problems on my E90 communicator.

Unable to sent emails, but I do receive emails.

I hope you are able to resolve this problem.

Thank you.

Hi Guys,

I'm still getting an error stating "unable to connect with information provided. please try again," when setting up my GMail account. I've tried everything listed on this blog except receive the SMS message with the install since I have texts blocked from my phone. Any ideas as to how to get this to work if you don't have SMS.

UPDATE FROM NOKIA MESSAGING TEAM:

A few answers for the time being -
1. Access point selection is coming back in an upcoming patch. For now, the solutions described in posts 62 or 85 work well. We made a big mistake on this (it wasn't an arbitrary decision, we're exploring better ways to switch between APNs as well). Apologies for any problems this may have caused.
2. We're going through and fixing issues with the “500: Failure - Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?”. One of the changes we made in this release was to use your mail provider's SMTP server to send out emails (so they always appear in your webmail sent email). That change caused problems for some users. We're actively fixing them. If you're experiencing that problem, please send an email to support@nokiamessaging.com
3. If you're getting connection error messages, please refer to Eric's post, number 66 to see if that resolves your issue. We are looking into that solution and seeing if we can bring that to more people.

We ARE reading your comments here, emails you send to nokiaemail [at] nokia.com, and blog and forum posts around the internet. Your feedback is valuable, and while any problems you're experiencing with Nokia Messaging are understandably frustrating, we're working to resolve them for you. The fixes that we make today will result in a much better final product as we continue to improve Nokia Messaging.

Having very frustrating issues as well, just like others here. I had the beta version working fine; then I installed the new version on top of the beta and it started up great, but it never synched e-mails, so I uninstalled the whole thing. I reinstalled the new version and now it hangs after I enter my Gmail address with message "Unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again."

What is going on? Please fix this!

Successful upgrade here on e71 but i can't see how to synchronize imap folders and long message truncated by 'header plus' option don't get downloaded on the fly anymore.

Sent folder still doesn't show emails sent from another client....

Looks better than before but considering this and other feedback here, are you sure you've packaged the right build ?

Don't try to sell it yet, it's not ready.

Does this mean I can have ActiveSync-ish push mail with My Nokia? I will keep my pureinbox because I like their webmail but I don't want to trade my Nokia in for a Samsung Jack!

Keep it up!

I almost wrote a disappointed comment about how I still can't setup alternate servers for my incoming email, and then I see I can. Awesome! It'd be nice if I could edit an existing setup to change the from email address, but at least I have an option. To anyone who doesn't know how - try to create it using the "vanity domain" and when it won't connect it'll offer you an option to specify an alternative incoming server.

Awesome bringing in the IMAP folders, too. Since I use Gmail to arrange my travel info (hotels, rental cars, etc). Sharing that label helps out a lot for getting the info on my phone.

Also, it feels a bit faster now, which is always a plus.

Thanks!

While I could use Nokia Email Beta 1, with Beta 2 and with this version the phone client doesn't accept any of the addresses I currently use (Gmail, other POPs)... Any idea?

Joel,

I never saw the 500 error so can't comment on that. I did see something on a discussion forum elsewhere where someone said that error comes if the account access is over pop3. You'll have to search for it though. I don't think they had a fix except a link back to the surveymonkey post above.

Couldn't agree more with the view on Blackberry support on the E71. I bought this phone without checking and refused to believe the one guy who told me it wasn't going to come. Won't buy the E90 as I've gone off phones with moving parts.

Hey,

I've been using the messaging service for a while and it was working great with my google app accounts (2). BUT, after trying to change the password to my google app email account. my account stopped working. When i try to login, it says that i dont exist in the records. when i try to recover my password, it says the same thing. When i try to sign up again, it says that this email is already registered and i need to sign in. This is a big paradox! :)

Please help..

After an initial sync, my Nokia Email still doesn't retrieve new emails to the phone - at all; not after a manual sync and not as "push email". My email account is my companie's normal IMAP account. So, does Nokia Email work with a normal IMAP account at all or do you need some MS Exchange, GMail or Yahoo! account for this to work?

Hi, i'm still received 500: failure - unrecognized ssl message, plaintext connection? if want to try send email. Before in the middle of December, there is no problem like that. I'm agree with Sanjay, if nokia cannot fixed this, please do not replace blackberry connection to nokia email for Nokia E71.

I can never seem to get logged into the online account to remove the non working original beta account and start fresh to see if it work. All I get is "We are unable to process your request at this time. Try again later." It has been like this for ever but have never had any problems so never needed the access. now with out outbound email I am struggling and need to do something. Any thoughts

I think I have this figured out now. Here's what I did in order to get this version working on my phone.

1. Created a new generic email account. I created a new gmail account and I have no idea if yahoo etc will work. Made sure
that the password on this account follows the new Nokia rules, it makes things easier.

2. Registered for a new Nokia Messaging account using the gmail account in step 1. Gave my phone number, overrode the warning that the phone was already registered. Made sure that the new Nokia messaging account and the gmail account passwords were the same. Don't ask me why I think this matters - it also keeps things simpler.

3. Got the SMS with the link, downloaded the app (for the upteenth time.)

4. Started the app, gave the password. Waited. Noticed that the initial setup has a reference to SMS settings, and it doesn't ask for the login name. Must be encoded in the parameter of the download link.

5. Got the new account synced.

6. Added another email id using the phone app to see if that worked. It did. Synced as well.

Finally just to clean things up, went back to my original Beta account and cancelled the service. Interestingly, the beta account had this option while the new account doesn't show it. Yet. Must be a time out of some sort.

Will try adding my custom domain account using google apps next and report back on that.

Will the weirdness never cease? First I start receiving emails saying that there's a problem with my google emails (there isn't, I'm getting everything properly). Then yahoo gets hosed at the same time.

So I login to email.nokia.com to nuke the yahoo accounts, and get this - Nokia email doesn't remove them.

Cancel service works. I'm outta here.

Sanjay well I ollowed your advise and it is now worse, deleted my Nokia Account, created a new one with my Yahoo email. added my corporate email and now I can not send or recieve which means I am dead in the water and may need to buy a blackberry tomorrow just so I can work. I just had four people in the last week go to the E71 and the NOkia email on my recommendation and I will now need to pay for new phones for them to protect my reputation. This is a very sad day for me and Nokia given all the people I have gotten to switch from blackberry to the E71 and nokia email. I litterly will not be able to work next week if this is not fixed and now I can not even read my emails.
Nokia if you are listening please know that I was a big supporter for years, you had something that worked, you upgraded going into a holiday and left your customers stranded with out service and a loss of a lot of family time trying to get it working. For the record I am a CEO of a software company so I get it but this is about 2 weeks now since you killed us.
A sad day indeed

Joel,

Any reason why you can't just use the regular mail app on the E71 to get your corp email over pop3 or imap? Or just a regular laptop?

And I'm a little surprised you've trusted a beta service with this so far.

Here we go again - I really should have something better to do, but I don't, so ...

Removed the app from the phone. Registered from a new gmail account. Nokia Email service recognized the phone number and offered to add the new gmail id to the existing account. I refused, and received a new text message with a link. The new link worked, more or less smoothly. The one glitch which appeared was whilst the initial setup was detecting available networks.

I suspect that beta users have some files lying around which confuse the app.

Now I'm trying to get the original login to work again, and the app tells me that the application is registered to a different account.

The variables in play appear to be the following:

1. Nokia Email id and password (with the new restrictions on length and complexity).

2. The primary email id/password which you want to pull off an existing account (in my case a custom domain hosted on google apps).

3. The phone number where the initial sign up SMS was sent.

I can't quite figure out how to remove all these cleanly, so if someone else more familiar with Symbian's innards can help, that would be great.

Lastly, how does one remove oneself from the Nokia Email system?

thanks Sanjay Mehta, it had all been working great for me and I I like the new client better just can not send corp mail is all.
I was able to logon to my account at netac3.vie.hosting.nokia.com so that issue is resolved, guess the email.nokia.com site has some issues.
when I find some time will try to create a new account and see if it all gets sorted though may give the nokia team until after new years as I would hate to end up with nothing, then I would have to go back to Seven and the lousy sms client on the phone. thanks for the insights

#32 Sanjay Mehta Thu, 2008-12-25 03:38

workaround for connection setup:

Install SmartConnect from Birdstep (came free on my E71). Configure a connection group with the access points you want Nokia Email to use. Give that connection group name when Email asks for the AP.

Catch is that you might have to reinstall Nokia Email (yet) again ...

Joel,

I guess the server which hosts your account has a problem ... I saw that a couple of times and the only recourse is to wait.

I also got the same error - account already exists - that's why I went for a new gmail and new nokia email combo as in my post above. I was prompted for the phone as duplicate but 1 of the 3 options was to create a new account with the same phone number. After the new combo was up and running I added other accounts using just the phone.

Not sure you got your corporate email working at all earlier if it was behind a firewall.

Nokia needs to put this service back in beta.

Sanjay, my problem is that it all works fine for yahoo mail just not for my primary set up account which is my company email which I must send from to keep work and play separate. I can not add a new account because it says the email account already exists if I try to sign up as a new user. Plus I can not log into email.nokia.come to cancel my account.

Nokia Mail on my N95-3 is stuck on using my home WiFi access point with no apparent way to change it. Nothing in the menu or App Manager and rerunning the "Email Setup" never prompts for the access point.

I see several other users asking how to switch between access points with no response from anyone from Nokia.

Are we all missing something or is this a bug?

#38 Burcrim Thu, 2008-12-25 01:32

In order to change the access point from my home wifi which i only selected in the first place for the installation, I uninstalled (both email apps in the app manager) and requested a new sms installation message. When I reinstalled I just selected my regular AT&T access point instead so I can at least use this to sync anyway.

Not having a way to change this in the settings is absurd.

#39 Nokia_fan@wits_end Wed, 2008-12-24 22:29

Finally, got the e71 working...

I got the email client working on an e61i after only about ten attempts. After about 50 attempts on the e71 I had just about given up, then I found these posts, many describing similar problem to mine on the e71 - "unable to connect with the information provided. please try again”."

I followed some of the hints, changed the password on my email accounts (they are different than the nokia password, so that had no impact). I then followed the link to re-install, chose my fone and entered my number.

The provisioning text arrived in seconds, quickly prompted me for my password (at last), entered my nokia password (which is not a strong password!, character only).

It accepted password, was running inside a minute with my emails arriving!.

The hint was really useful guys, thanks. It something about trying to force the stupid system to prompt you for a password by pretending you are starting again. Sending the text seems to kick this off.

(PS... Miles better than Mail for exchange, not nearly as good as iPhone or (sadly) WIndows Mobile 6.1.)

Long term user of GOOD mail on e61. Great app, Great Phone. Want to use e71, hope to use Nokia email.

Nokia, love the phone. PLEASE make the email client better. (Preview emails (like GOOD mail does), support for folders, HTML mail (and better font size control), more shortcuts, corporate email, front 'light' when email arrives (doesnt seem to work on mine?). User settings to control preferences etc. You are going the right direction, but it cant be that difficult to realise we all just want a reasonable email client on our phones

How do we know post #46 is legitimately from Davis Fields at Nokia and not some scammer? Pointing us to a 'surveymonkey' address to ask us for our email details is hardly professional.

The way Nokia have handled this whole process has been incredibly slack. They haven't even allowed a way for sent messages to be copied back to yourself so your home PC downloads them for keeping. Even the standard email client on my E71 does that! Nokia have serious lessons to learn about releasing software before it is ready, and about communication with customers. Message 46 above should either be deleted if fake, or posted with an official Nokia survey domain not surveymonkey.

@Burcrim
Are you sure?
In my case with e90, right now all my new email setting goes to email where it is supposed to. And I lost the capability to add them to default messaging. weird.
Was that (setting that run into messaging) a bug?
Cause I now I find it useful too.

If this application graduates does that mean we can't deliver feedback anymore??

I already sent some feedback trough the official Nokia Care channel and the answers you get are really stupid.

IMHO this version is what beta-1 should have been. So many features still to be added and bugs to be solved...

1. Why oh why is there no advanced option screen for more option. I don't want nokia email to guess the correct settings.
2. The server credentials for Fastmail/Xsmail are wrong. I send them many times but they still are not fixed.
3. Everytime my mailbox ends up being POP3'th although my provider is specialised in IMAP.
4. I want to define what my Sent Items/Trash folder is for synchonisation trough IMAP
5. Homescreen plugin customisation for E-series 1,2 or 3 messages or maybe only new messages?

Nokia messaging needs a special support channel where we can request and solve such items...

I've installed and reinstalled this application several times.

Earlier I could get it to pull email off an imap server (google). The so-called push email never actually pushed
anything, everything had to be manually synced.

Now I can't even get the Setup application to get
past the initial email query prompt and the main app doesn't even run.

Complete waste of time. No way that I will ever consider paying for this, as the website seems to imply.

Running Nokia Messaging on E66.

Problems installing initially - had to reinstall several times to be able to setup my gmail account, and to actually download my emails. Still no push though - had to manually sync every time - and no support for subfolders.

Now, it won't download any emails, even if I manually sync!

Not proving to be much use (obviously)....

I still have the ongoing problem of my name as entered in the settings not showing on emails I send. Only my email address is shown. This is on both Gmail and Yahoo! Mail.

Anyone else have this problem or know of a resolution? Nokia support only seem good for telling you to reinstall the application which has no effect.

Thanks for the update on #98.

The SMTP change explains my 500 errors - I use ntlworld and know already they do not allow external smtp access. Presumably the old version used a nokia smtp server? I would like to see this reinstated, seeing my sent items isn't high priority for me but for others you could add a "send to self" option that would get around it quite easily?

New problem now though - messenger periodically asks me for my password even when it's been connected all along. It didn't do this on beta, why should this be?

After that it finally did ask me to enter my email address only got the error message to pop-up that my credentials can not be verified. Frustrating.. Can not even reinstall the older version now - at least it worked.

Phone Info: E71-2 (RM-357)
Firmware: 100.07.76
Product Code: 0569371

Still two MAJOR issues (fyi - I have a googlemail account):

1. No new email until I do a manual sync.

2. All messages older than 3 days deleted from device (like #102, I have set the app to "Remove older than 1 month", although I would prefer to have no limit).

Please, Nokia, get these issues sorted ASAP - these are basic requirements of any contemporary email app. I am checking these comments regularly (hopefully not in vain), but have been forced to switch back to Seven for the forseeable future as it just works (even though I hate using the inbuilt email client)!

Further, the plugin on the standby screen MUST be customisable to be effective!

@ Ethan - I guess installing Applications on Phone Memory makes a lot of sense.
Else, it could harm the memory card as it has to wake the memory card up each & everytime you start the application.

Memory Cards are best to be used to save pics, videos, mps etc.

This is IMHO. :-)

Hi Davis,

Using an E71
First of all great product. It works well and I get my Google apps mails within seconds. At first Google apps wasn't working once i sent feedback it's been perfect.
I have a problem:
all mails older that 3 days do not appear on my phone. even though I have put the settings to 'Remove older than 1 month'.
This happens with all mails in my inbox and imap folders/labels.
Infact if my Imap folder has only older mails then I can't even see the Folder to access it.
Makes it a little difficult as there might be some mails one needs to refer to on the go.
Could you please give me a solution to this.

Thanks

After more or less a week of struggle with the final and so called "stable" version (the beta had never failed in the main features), i couldn't get it to work, As many of you, i got the error "unable to get the definitions..." in the first step of the email configuration. I tried "resetting" the nokia email account password, with no result, also had already re-installed the software about 6 times, then i decided to take extreme measures.
I removed nokia email (for the uncountless time), canceled my "subscription" to the service in the nokia email site, "created" a new account (pointing to the same gmail account) and received a new link, this time with some kind of validation in the dload address. Dloaded (again) the application, installed, configured, seamless. So far it's been working "normally"
Hope this works

Same problem with Yahoo. Although I did get an email from Nokia, saying they were unable to contact my server and it must be because I had changed something. Of course, nothing had been changed. I've tried what people tried above (reinstall, resave password, etc.) but so for nothing.

I like the interface, and I like the functionality when it works. But not working is pretty much a deal breaker.

Why won't this app connect via Wifi? When will that feature be added? THe site says in future, but why is it so difficult? Atleast let us use the free trial period on wifi.

Also, is this going to be something different from the one announced @ Nokia World? I am getting confused. Wasnt it supposed to be free?

does it require socket access or does it work with HTTP?

my data plan blocks socket access, but lets you connect via http. I could not get it to work yesterday. I want to know whether it was a temporary problem or is it the way things are.

I got this to work, but it can't connect with WiFi. This is an important feature for me as I don't have a data plan. Every kB costs a lot of money... Please make this application configurable so I can use WiFi.

Is there any way to either get a beta account deleted I registered with a gmail account that I want to use but since before Christmas I get "We are unable to process your request at this time. Try again later." when I try and log in on the website (numerous times over the last 6 weeks).

I've tried creating a new account and adding the address but it says it is registered to another account. I can't remove the beta account because I can't log in. I couldn't see any support form or email address.

I am using E71 and my email accounts from Terra and UOL in Brazil. I can not send emails and am very frustrated. I keep getting the SMTP 500 error. Nokia does not answer my emails. Sanjay,
The prob with the traditional client is that it inserts so many extra lines on my incomeing email, not sure why, it is virtually impossible to read emails. That said I got email working for incoming and still have the same outgoing problem, 500 Error.
As for trusting a beta program for something so important. Look at it this way. I was using the E61 with Blackberry email from my provider. Thus I had a great solution. Nokia + blackberry email. When Nokia released the E71 they removed blackberry support. I tested the beta on my old E61 before I traded it in for the E71 because it worked. So from my point of view Nokia should not have removed Blackberry support before they offered a replacement. The E71 is a strong work email phone, that was what it was built and sold as. So Nokia should have a strong email solution to go with it. I suspect I will go with BlueWhale which I tested a ways back, it has a nice client, the Nokia sms client is just not usable. Also note that I upgraded my customers over the holidays and we had fulltime support people ready to go and help any issues. Nokia moved beta to production release and then have failed to fix a problem for 2 weeks. That is not good support. They should have left it in beta till after the New Year and updated when they had support people available.
I am writting these long emails in hopes that someone at Nokia reads them (Nokia, turn blackberry support on until you can release a relacement or get the E71 fixed yesterday or the E71 is useless for email. I love what you are doing and think it ='s blackberry when it is working)

Thanks for your insights Sanjay
Joel

I was wondering what is the expected time lag between a mail arriving on the mail server, and it being polled by Nokia servers. As I have observed that sometimes if my Outlook is running and it fetches the mail from mail server, Nokia messaging fails to pushes it. My Outlook is configured to delete the copy of email from the server.

Thanks and Regards, Puneet

When ever i turn my phone off and turn it back on the nokia messaging client will not open, it does not update, it in fact does nothing. I have to re download the client and re install it. I cannot see on here is anyone else has had that problem? Is it just me or did i miss a post...

Ive got an E71 purchased in the UK - unbranded and unlocked

Hi,
I used the beta fine, but am struggling with the released version.

I've de-installed and re-installed, and now am unable to login at all.

On first startup I constantly get "Unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again"" despite having a good unrestricted data connection. I've tried on multiple wlan connections as well as 2.5/3G

I'm using an N96, but have fw 12.043 installed.

I can login to the nokia email website, and see my account (...@gmail.com) correctly listed

"unable to connect with the information provided. please try again"

E71 have been using Nokia Email since early beta. I suspect the problem may be tied to the new password requirement - 8 letters and numbers. My old password was not as strong, and Email Setup does not prompt for a password, only the account email address (even after multiple uninstalls using App Mgr).

My E71 is reliable now. Since January 29th in my last post the Seven application has run beautifully pushing in my four e mail accounts. Don't anybody get a blackberry, keep the E71 and download Seven. Hopefully Mr Fields is reading this and working hard with his team on getting something reliable again for us all, in the meantime, I am happy with my Nokia and have a usable tool again.

Ethan, if your domain is foo, but your mailserver is bar, enter your email address as user@foo. It'll try to connect to foo's IMAP server and fail. Once it fails it'll let you enter the username and password to use as well as the correct server. Enter your user and password and bar there.

#91 jared Eldredge Mon, 2009-01-05 21:45

@ruffneck
personally, i think it is worth it. would be worth it more if it supported HTML mail. btw, it plays nicely with Psciloc Connect + Devicescape, in case anyone cares (i'm not affiliated with either of these companies/products)

Psiloc connect: provides a singled access point for apps to connect with, and dynamically reassigns the actual connection of this access point to either EDGE, 3G, or any available WIFI.
(not free!)

Devicescape: automatically logs into wifi hotspots that require HTML based authentication (i use this mostly for those hotspots with the 'i agree to the free wifi terms' -- this makes it so you don't have to open a browser, it just does it for you)
(this one IS free)

so: i setup Nokia Email to connect to my access point [Psicloc Connect]. when i'm around wifi, i'm connected via wifi. when i'm not around wifi, i'm connected via EDGE (i can't do 3G with my N95-1 in the USA). no user interaction required, it just works (same can't be said about all apps, notably Gizmo and Internet Radio which both fail to recognize the psiloc connect access point properly)

in this manner, i can download attachments only when i know i'm on wifi. saves the time of waiting for large attachments...

@Eldredge,

Thanks for your reply! Yes, I know Nokia Email/Messaging (this is so confusing, now that Nokia Email "is a part of Nokia Messaging. But I am talking about email.nokia.com, not the native email client on the phone) is supposed to work with IMAP - or so I've heard. And I explained to the Nokia Care lady that I mean this push email service, that she acknowledged to be in beta and so on. So I guess she knew what she was talking about, and she said then to me on the phone that this service is not supposed to work like we now seem all to think it works. And is not working for me. So, is there anyone else I could call or contact from Nokia to get some kind of confirmation what is going on and what should be expected of Nokia Email?

And I wish Nokia would reply to my email(s) I've sent them to their support channels regarding this issue, but I have heard only silence back. So if email.nokia.com works on any IMAP account, it certainly doesn't work for me and if Nokia wants me to help them find and/or fix a bug in their system, I would naturally be very glad to help them. But since they won't reply on my requests, I have to leave Nokia Email for now and wish they do something about something - sometimes. Sigh.

Improvements - for the last two days messenger has stopped periodically asking for my password, and my email history is now up to five days so looks like maybe a resolution has been found for these (touch wood)?

On the down side it seems the phone frequently stops syncing and has to be manually synced, although it seems to auto sync for a while after this.

So improving but still not there yet.

Would like to feedback that on N81 8GB, this application can only be installed on phone memory. There is no option provided during installation to install to memory card.

The application is downloaded by using the Web browser to browse at http://email.nokia.com/

Any possibility to fix this, so that precious phone memory space is not wasted?

The upgrade is a huge disaster. I cannot believe that a BETA version was better then the final release. No ISSUES with the BETA but the upgrade has thrown me without mails.

-No sync for hours

-No outgoing Emails

-Unsuccessful sync

-No option to change access points

frustrating to the core.

Am switching to Blackberry...to say the least

Why No Change Connection option anymore ?

Every other connecting Application has a method for selecting the prefered connectivity. i.e. WiFi, 3G etc

NokiaEmail did until this release! Why loose this options?

Anyone know how to roll back to the previous Beta ?

Here is a copy of the e-mail i sent to Davis, with all the steps i tried to get this program to work

---------E-Mail starts bellow -------

Hello Davis,
I'm trying to get the Nokia Messaging to work. I have tried the following way. First I would like to give you specifications to make this as detailed as possible; instead of just writing it does not work.

Phone specs:
Phone: Nokia E 71 – 1 (15), unlocked, unbranded.
FW#: 110.07.127, latest according to the Nokia software utility.
Service Provider specs:
Service Provider: AT&T
Data Plan: Data Unlimited
Available Connections on phone:
ATT&T Media Net
ATT&T Internet
Easy Wlan

Wifi:
Dlink, DI-634M, removed all security for ease of testing.
E-Mail accounts used for this test:
username@gmail.com, POP3 enabled
username@yahoo.com

Step1:
Registered at email.nokia.com user my G-mail account as a default log email, set up a password more than 8 letters, after successful log in added a secondary email, yahoo email account. Installed the program using the following link on my phone http://email.nokia.com. E-mail set up wizard came on, tested the network, and said to input an email address inputted the email address used for signup received the following error. "unable to connect with information provided. please try again" . Then used the secondary email to log in got the same error. Restarted the phone and tried the two email address again, got error. Waited two days thinking it did not replicate yet. Also removed the program.

Step2

Forty-eight plus hours later logged back into the website downloaded the program again using the TXT message feature, this time instead of using ATT&T Media Net I selected WLAN connection to speed up the download. Installed tried to log in, it started to scan for WLAN, which I found odd, before it just tested the network right away. So I lunched the "e-mail" it was set to WLAN so I changed it to ATT&T Media Net exited and ran the setup it was still using WLAN. Re-lunched "e-mail" selected ATT&T Media Net put in random password; thinking it saves the connection after it tries to login. Exited the "e-mail" re-lunched the setup, still asked to use WLAN I said "cancel" tried to login with the two emails got the same error as in step one.

Step3.

Lunched the "e-mail" tried to log in with random passwords, of course it failed, left the applications running switched to folder and ran the set up. Tried to login using "Default", same error as in step one. Repeated the above for all available connections from the drop down menu, no luck.

Step4.

After much pondering I decided to remove the e-mail accounts I have set up on my phone using the native e-mail feature. Removed the yahoo and the Gmail accounts I had on the phone. Restarted the phone just to make sure, repeated the "connection option" in step two, once again got the same error. Then repeated step three same error.

I ran out of ideas to test to get this to work any help will be appreciated. I do have a question the "Default" connections that e-mail uses what is it and how does it determine which connection to use as default. I was thinking why the set up can't be simpler as it is on the "Mail on Ovi". To set up the synch options they send you a txt with a link you put in the special pass code, which is provided for you. It configures your phone hassle free everything works, just a thought.

Thank You,
Name Removed

!! Solution to new Nokia Messaging problem !!

Hi all, last night I tried upgrading to the new Nokia Messaging on my E71. Like a lot of you, I was frustrated by the “unable to connect with information provided. please try again” error. I had tried everything I could think of, including wiping my entire E71 and retrying. Nothing worked. I was ready to condemn Nokia to the seventh level of hell.

Today I logged into the email.nokia.com website, and like last night everything looked fine and dandy. At random, I decided to "change" the settings on my gmail account. I went into the account I had stored on the messaging website, and re-saved my password to my gmail account.

I then used the link to re-send the installation txt message to my phone. When the txt hit my phone, it prompted me for my password, and VOILA!! the new Nokia Messaging works like a charm with my E71. It's as good or better than the beta, which had been working fine.

I don't know if this will work for others, but felt I had to share with the community. Good luck, and I hope it works for you.

-Eric

How do I switch the connection that the mail app uses?

I've seen this question repeated a couple of times, it was answered earlier, but here goes.

For switching the connection from one to another the process is simple enough (although I agree it needs to be fixed). The application simply uses the last access point to be used by the phone.

1. Open the web browser, choose the access point you want to use (this updates the last used AP).
2. Close the web browser.
3. Open the mail application and choose to go offline and then back online.

Thats it, now the mail application should use the last used AP for connect to the server or at least it does on the N95. Obviously you will need to switch it back if you have used another access point again, but it should only switch if you go offline and back online, exit the application or restart the phone.

For the last 2 days my Email Application has not been working. I've tried uninstalling then reinstalling and even changing passwords and removing all email id's from the website and re doing it.
however every time I reinstall I get stuck at the part where the phone gives me an error regarding SMS PRovisioning and just doesn't Run or setup.
got so fed up that I tried EMOZE and then SEVEN and found seven is great.
So i'm not coming back to Nokia messaging till it's totally trouble free and reliable.

@Joel,

I suggest you ignore your old beta account. See if a new gmail account and a new Nokia email account can be made to work.

BTW, I had nuked the Nokia Email app from my phone, restarted, and then followed the process I outlined above. At this time, my real email, a test yahoo id, and a test gmail id are all syncing with the new app.

New to Nokia messaging, works fine but still issues with IMAP folders.
I m using Mobileme, and when I drag and drop, it takes ages to see the change into Nokia messaging (immediate with Profimail)

Push email seems to work, but slower than with Profimail.

Why does Nokia Messaging insist on using THREE precious lines of homescreen space, even when there are NO NEW EMAILS? This is easily the most annoying thing about the messaging client. Annoying enough to make me stop using it.

Davis,

A few more things:

0. The initial setup, when it works, is great. When it doesn't, it should drop into a manual setup option along with a reset to defaults option.

1. The little '@' symbol doesn't appear in the top right corner - not sure if I noticed it during the beta either.

2. Unlike post# 97, I don't see anything at all on the home screen.

3. The application help has references to the enterprise version. How does one sign up for that?

4. The application help refers to "Service Info" - no such option is visible. I assume this is the APN stuff you're going to add back soon.

5. The Connection Info option only leads to a mini log and then to a more detailed log. I would have called this option "Sync Info."

We have also been having the same issue with the Nokia email applications not working (all versions) and going through the same painful process as #205 in trying to resolve it. I am now on SEVEN and super delighted. It'll take a lot to get me back on Nokia email.

1. Still have to do manual sync from time to time in order to get mails on my E71.
2. Mails older than 3days are still there when I have set it to delete mails older than 3days
3. Recently it has started asking my password n login details atleast once a day, that wasn't happening before? Is it meant to be doing this?

Using this on ATT in the USA. Tried downloading from the website but it set up the email as pull email Eventually got the sms link and downloaded it. Set it up to use default access point. I use Wireless at home for browsing and ATT internet when out. Used suggestions above for way to switch access point for the email. All morning it wouldn't download my email from yahoo or Gmail. Had to set up the work email on Seven as Nokia can't access it and I can't manually configure it. After spending three frustrating days I have now deleted the Nokia software and am using Seven for all three of my email accounts with no problems.
I spend all day in and out of the New York subway with the signal on and off and Seven picks it up straight away when I come out and delivers the email.
Never had any problems with the Beta with my gmail account. Very disappointed with the "full program". A huge backward step. If Nokia are going to be taken seriously in the USA you need to do better than this.

Hi Davis

After I tried to upgrade my Beta, I followed all the steps I have been following since I started to use the first Beta.
But when I get to the setup, I enter my email address, then shortly I get the message "Unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again".
This has been happening since the 17th of Dec. I see I am not the only one experiencing this problem I have been following the feedback on Nokia Beta Labs and on S60 Living Blog but you have never addressed this issue.

I am using a Nokia E61i.

Thanks

Madoda

@ Ecco
I used e90 too.
Yes, there are two icon for email setting.
Icon "email setup" is used to configure email and put them in the messaging tab. So it looks like the manual pull mail in messaging but if you let it connect to internet, it will act as push mail.
Icon "email" only works if you configure your email accounts through http://email.nokia.com and ask to be sent link through phone number.
When you received the message (looks like a OTA gprs setting), just follow the instruction and all your push mail will be located in the "email" icon if you click it.

So basically, in E90 you have two option for nokia messaging feature.
I don't know wether this is meant to be like this or a bug.

For access point, if you chose to set email through "email setup" which put them to messaging, you can manuall change access point you want.
But if you use the OTA setting, you can't change access point. In this case I am stuck with home wifi.
I haven't tried receiving the OTA setting with my wifi off, maybe it will choose my 3g connection.
Need trial or opinion on this.

Right now, my yahoo stuck with this wifi since setting yahoo via phone (email setup icon) always says not available.

Hello. Same problem as #205 and #206. Exiting at the hung SMS Provisioning step and then setting up a second time works, but the mailbox is put in the standard messaging app. and the Nokia e-mail app just doesn't open when I click on it. I've tried installing it as the first thing after a hard reset and it still doesn't work.

I have been unable to set up Nokia Messaging to allow me to login to my email address set up with www.1and1internet.co.uk. These are my settings:

Username: [username]
Password: [password]
Incoming Mail Server: imap.1and1.co.uk
Port: 143
Email Server Port: auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk
Port: 357

It simply won't connect. If you could fix this, it'd be great please!

The steps I posted in #76 worked for me. If you read past them however, you can see that they did NOT work for someone else.

Try them only if you don't have anything critical going on.

Now is it worth it? I have to admit I was extremely skeptical initially but the answer appears to be yes. It's worked really well after I got past the initial frustration.

Poking around in the E71's settings also shows a higher level of integration - for example you can set the new app to run as the default email client when you press the dedicated button. (And the "@" does show up, but only after sometime - the audible notification comes much earlier.)

Finally, since I also set my SmartConnect connection group as the default APN, I have the client using Wifi if available and the cellular network if not. This MUST be configured at initial setup, and the only reason I have this working at all is because I provide the SC group out of habit to all applications which want an internet connection.

Installed fine on E71 when upgrading from beta via phone browser (email.nokia.com) but no longer shows new emails even when synchronizing manually.
Probably related to this: I haven't been able to login to my Nokia email settings on email.nokia.com from my PC browser for the last 3 days. I keep getting the error "We are unable to process your request at this time. Try again later. " so presumably Nokia has a server problem.

@Johan Paul:
yes, nokia email works with any general IMAP account (and POP3, although that isn't part of your question).

i had an issue at one point, where i ran out of phone-memory (storage) and emails stopped coming in (of course, no where to store them). there seems to be no way to utilize the sdcard in nokia email (correct me if i'm wrong).

this might be your problem, and would be easy to fix: check you free memory (again, storage not RAM) and remove/uninstall some stuff if it is nearly full.

I'm having a wierd problem since upgrading my Nokia Email program.

When I send it an email it arrives in the other persons inbox as coming from my email address rather than my name.

Basically there doesn't seem to be a FROM NAME attached to the email. I've setup the from name in the program and online in the account settings but still no work.

I'm using a Nokia N95 8GB.

I've tried reinstalling the application.

I've tried formatting my phone.

I've even cancelled my account and signed up again.

Still no luck. I've searched the internet and had no luck so I am thinking I'm the only person with this problem.

Any ideas?

#
I almost wrote a disappointed comment about how I still can’t setup alternate servers for my incoming email, and then I see I can. Awesome! It’d be nice if I could edit an existing setup to change the from email address, but at least I have an option. To anyone who doesn’t know how - try to create it using the “vanity domain” and when it won’t connect it’ll offer you an option to specify an alternative incoming server.

Awesome bringing in the IMAP folders, too. Since I use Gmail to arrange my travel info (hotels, rental cars, etc). Sharing that label helps out a lot for getting the info on my phone.

Also, it feels a bit faster now, which is always a plus.

Thanks!

Comment by ydant — December 17, 2008 @ 9:45 pm

Hi ydant,
I wonder how did you able to select different access point or server? What do you mean by "try to create it using the “vanity domain”? mind to explain that? Thanks.

installed on my e71. works ok but:

- push email does not work and I have to manually sync each time

- no connection switch. you have to close and reopen the application to use different connections (i.e. GSM data or Wifi). Please add in the menu an option to mange dynamically multiple connections.

- I use Gmail with labels (different email accounts) and would like to be able to change the outgoing server like I do with Gmail.

Just an update to Nokia Email usage on regular IMAP accounts. According to Nokia Care, Nokia Messaging / Email does not support regular IMAP accounts. So there you have it.

I have no idea what is the list of supported services since Nokia doesn't seem to publish such a list. Also, I have failed to get a notice while setting up Nokia Email client that the email account I tried to setup is not supported.

Nokia, please pay attention to the user experience, okay?

#140 jared Eldredge Mon, 2009-01-05 13:37

@Johan Paul:
where are you getting that info? my nokia messaging account is tied to a standard imap account on a no-name ISP. there is no reason for them to NOT support standard IMAP (conversely, the STANDARD IMAP is, and should be, the very first focus point of an email app. that and/or POP3 which nokia also supports)

so - Johan - i don't know where you got your info, but either it was falsely stated to you or somehow became inaccurate through the process of communication (perhaps nokia has told you they can't support a non-standard imap implementation used by your isp?).

Nokia Care, i'm assuming, is the standard customer support group? yes, i've dealt with them. no, they would have NO IDEA WHAT THIS APP DOES. this is not part of a standard nokia phone, Nokia care would have as little to do with this app as, say, Apple has to do with FartMachine on the iPhone. regardless, the original (shipped with my N95-1) Messaging app (same thing that you get your SMS messages in) IS PERFECTLY CAPABLE of communicating with a standard IMAP mailserver. that's all i used up till this app came out. it did so very well, as a matter of fact, and even support IMAP PUSH (which provides functionality many would call PUSH EMAIL, albeit with the caveat that if you lose your connection it doesn't automatically reconnect and continue providing the service).

so, to sum up:
1. Nokia Care is INCORRECT: both the built in Messaging app and Nokia Email are perfectly capable of supporting standard IMAP mailboxes. they also both support POP3.

2. Nokia Care would not be answering the question you asked: they would have no idea what this BETA LABS app is - if you found someone who does then a) you found an exception; b) they were still wrong.

3. you failed to receive notification that your mailbox is unsupported: that's because your mailbox is NOT unsupported. there is some other underlying problem, but the product needs no additional features or additions in order to support IMAP; a bug may exist with the programmed interactions with your ISP's mail server, and i'm sure nokia would appreciate that you've taken the time to report this bug. but rest assured: IMAP is IMAP and nokia supports IMAP (might i add that even the built in messagin app supports imap more completely, in the way of IMAP IDLE, than even Microsoft Outlook, Windows Mail, and Apple Mail).

goodluck,

I find the tag line for Nokia messaging "Mobile email mad easy" to be so funny (in a really pathetic sort of way). Mobile messaging is just really bad, It regularly has period is 6 to 8 hours when no email is retrieved even with a forced sync. I tried to delete the account and add it back in as was recommended, but unable to add the account back. Deleted the app, and it worked (sort of). Still unable to retrieve mail frequently. If you have Yahoo I recommend Yahoo Go at http://mobile.yahoo.com. Did anyone at Nokia test this???

#142 Joseph Asmar Sun, 2008-12-21 17:37

Hey Davis, its Joseph Asmar also know as snowy101 at symbian-freak, great work for you an the team.

Bro come on you left out a few things here :)

Notification mail has been sent is still needed.

I like how the icon used for my gmail resembles gmails icon. I made it to your attention the icon used in the open applicatio bar for the nokia email client an open inbox is still the same. It becomes irritating to chose the open inbox, it requires to read the icon instead of visualizing it. For example the gmail icon can be used instead, an so forth for others for multiple accounts, or what was used previously in the beta.

Scrolling down an email is very tedious by the way. It scrolls down by one line. My suggestion would be by 3, 5, or 7, an odd number seems good.

I use right an left to skip through links to make it quicker for me.

It just gets to be a hassle to click for each line.

Anyway again great job, ive always been supportive for this project an cant wait to see it at its full potential.

By the way a quick concern, well this would be more directed at mail on ovi, how come it is not done in sms, rather than a data point, for the majority of the world like nokia life tools. Thats what i did anticipate it would have been, since it is a better solution for 3rd world emerging markets. In my case i pay $20 a month for unlimited data, but thats the states. I know from exp. Its not the same in the rest of the world. To reach %70 of the world with out email would require a better financal solution. Just my curiosity.

Thanks for the information, ydant. I gave it try and it works only partly.

If you enter a mail address that doesn't exist, you can enter the pop/imap server and port data. But as you can't change the mail address afterwards, it's useless again. You can connect to the server but you will use a wrong mail address.

I don't understand why Nokia simply doesn't let us enter all the information all at once.

Syncing is not working for me since morning, I thought it was a problem on my end, so I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, and the first time it worked, synced fine, but since then none. I have a new E71 and have never before used email on a mobile phone. Installation onand set up on Dec 17 was easy and quick and I got emails almost straight away. However, since then I have been able to sync only once each day (the last time at 14:32 GMT today). I'm assuming there is a Nokia server issue but would appreciate a response from Nokia to confirm.
Also, in the Sent folder, although sent emails are listed, the only text when opened reads 'Email truncated to 0 characters. Is this a setting issue or another glitch in this Beta application?

I am having the same outbound email issue “500: Failure - Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?” error as others have reported.

In an effort to help please note that this is only for my corporate email which we run using our own SSL certificate not VeriSign. I can send email from my yahoo account I just set up and tested on my E71. However, it does not help me with work emails which is my main use of my E71.

I also have an issue logging into my account at http://email.nokia.com/account/home.action
I get "We are unable to process your request at this time. Try again later. Take me to the Nokia Messaging home page."
This has been a problem since I signed up for the fist beta release. Doubt they are related but figured I would mention it since I cannot maintain my account.

Am following the comments out of morbid fascination. Maybe a real fix will come after the holidays?

Regarding the lack of connection management, the cynic in me thinks that this is to help sell the service to operators in order to better monetise gprs/3g data usage?

I had Nokia Messaging - version 9.04(21) on my Nokia E71 and it was working fine except that I couldn't select or change the access point (it defaulted to 3G but I wanted to choose wifi or 3G). I even tried instaling devicescape but this didn't help.
So, I followed the process detailed in post 183 by Keni B Davies, including removing the application and starting all over again. This time, during installation, I was asked which access point to use and I selected my wireless router. The application installed OK and everything is working fine except that the Settings tab doesn't have the "Advanced > Account Info > Access Point" selection. However, I have found that if I set the phone to Offline (the phone, not the Mail Application) the mail application then asks to use the wifi link, which is what I wanted. If I turn the phone to online again, the mail still uses wifi.
At least I can use the phone when I'm roaming in countries where I don't have a data plan so many thanks to Keni.
Does anyone know why I don't have the "Advanced etc" selection on my phone?

Mel

Nokia E-Mail (messaging).
Well. It certainly LOOKS glossy, but I wasn't sure HOW it was different to the onboard application, which is part of Messaging on my N82.
With the onboard messaging client, it would collect (pull?) e-mails every hour. The Nokia E-mail (messaging) application collects (push e-mail) more often.
I have found, however, that if one sends an e-mail from the new client, then there is no record of that sent e-mail. Handset "sent mail" box remains empty. It doesn't appear as a sent mail on my pc (Outlook) - I thought it should syncronise??
If I wished to send an image file, using the onboard mail (messaging) client on my N82, I would go to the gallery, pick an image, then click SEND. It would invoke the messaging, and I could send as e-mail. I could also open the (on board) e-mail client, click INSERT>Image, and I wuld be taken to the gallery, where I would see all the images, choose one, and send as e-mail. NOT so with the "new" client. I CANNOT send an image, direct from the gallery. It does NOT invoke the "new" Nokia Push e-mail client. If I am IN the new mail client, and wish to send an image, I select to insert a file, which then takes me to the folder structure. I pick on a image folder, and..... NO thumbnails, but just icons, and file names. USELESS unless one knows which file number to send, as opposed to seeing the image to send.
For my part, I give the application 2/10 :-(
Come on Nokia, sort it out!!!!

I did manage to configure my gmail and web.de account but I can't access my companies pop3 account. I don't understand why it is not possible to enter IMAP/SMTP/POP3 settings directly? (Perhaps it's userfriendly to guess everything by the mail address, but it doesn't work all the time this way.)

Little Update

Solution on 185 by SimonP works for E90.
Can change Access point "indirectly".
No biggy for doing this.
But I prefer some fixes in next update or even official version.
Nice works, Beta Team. This gives RIM a nice kick.

any other ideas?

Sir,

I am using a Nokia E90 with FirmWare Version: 210.34.75

I downloaded and Installed the Nokia Messaging Application.

Set up my email account. At the end of the set up it showed me the following message:

"Mailbox set up in Messaging Folder"

When I run the Email application from the installation folder, nothing happens. the screen just refreshes.

Kindly advice.

I have one gmail account that works great.
I'm trying to add another account that is domain-hosted on gmail, and for some reason it keeps failing (saying sever can not be connected).
This version should support that... I think.
Any ideas?

I can't login, says there is records don't match, can't retrieve password, says my username doesn't exist, can't sign up, says I'm already registered, and I can't add my email to another account because it is already set up. I would really like to get this working =(

I discovered something rather odd recently. There is no way I can get one of my work emails to work with Nokia Messaging, I always get the "Unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again." error. It never worked, not even with the beta version. A diferent work email works though - same provider, same mail server, same email and user name form, only a different domain name.

- Non-working email:
address: xxxx.xxxxxx@x#x-xxxx.com (my.name@domain-name.com)
user name: x#x-xxxx.comxxxx.xxxxxx (domain-name.commy.name)

*The domain has a number and a dash in its name.

- Working email:
address: xxxx.xxxxxx@xxxxxxxxxxx.si (my.name@domainname.si)
user name: xxxxxxxxxxx.sixxxx.xxxxxx (domainname.simy.name)

*The doamin has only letters in its name.

Has the same problem with all of the above.
Previously have used beta version and works great
After upgrading to the latest one, can not retrieve email at all
Decided to reinstall the apps, but when I tried to log-in to Nokia Messaging website, my id can not be found
So, create a new ID using the old email, get the installation package, and installed the apps in phone
But, when tried to setup my email, always said “Unable to connect with the information provided. Please try again.”
Please advise

#179 Mark Williams Wed, 2008-12-31 10:30

Re Dave Fields comments at post 98, I took his and others advice since suffering the dreaded "500: Failure - Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?" after upgrading the NokiaEmail via their website

I have a Nokia E71 and i use a POP3 account with Tiscali, apart from the 500 error,I was also suffering from a failure of the software to sync automatically - it constantly showed being 'offline' & the @ symbol missing intermittantly when email had arrived by a manual sync.

So after much reading on this forum and others, On 29/12/08 @ 2220 hrs I sent a brief email to support@nokiamessaging.com detailing my problems. Amazingly a few hours later @ 0208 hrs I received an email from the same address.

Nokia stated that they had examined my 'the log of activity on my account' and could 'see' the problem. They stated they had resolved it from their end, without any change in my settings, email address or connection settings.

Since this email, I have had no problems at all, including the continued appearance of the @ symbol.

I therefore suggest that anyone else with the 500 error problem, take DAVE FIELDS advice & email: support@nokiamessaging.com & hope for the same level of good support that I did, until Nokia resolve it with a patch etc.

regards

Hi Davis et al,

With regards to Google Apps, it keeps failing on me when I try to add the google apps hosted domain account, either from the web or from the phone...
I seems as it looks for the mail server in the form of mail.domain.com, while google apps domain mail servers are pop.gmail.com (with port 995 rather than 110).

Is there any special way to notify the service about the different server name and ports?

Help please...

Thanks,
Yoram

On my E90 Communicator the new mail application (release version) is very confusing: after installation I found two new icons (red @'s). One of them configured my Gmail account within the built-in messaging client. The other one did - nothing! Starting it shows no reaction!
What's that? Why should I install a setup wizard to get an account configuration I already had before? And what's this other application for - the red @???
BTW: there's nothing different after installation of the new Nokia messaging - no push mail, no differnet interface as shown in screenshots. Nada.
Is this a kind of joke, Nokia?

Nokia should provide a patch permitting user selection of connection type, as was previously available on the beta version ASAP.

This is the major issue we all are experiencing. nokia pls remember we are workin with mobiles and hence the user moves from location to location, constantly faced with connecting to adhoc connections.

Keep up the great work, but listen to the people out there, who are constant travellers, and need and open based connectivity option.

When on the move, i sadly rely back on Yahoo Go 3.0 on my E66, and only activate my nokia messaging wen i am in my office.

As a previous being a longtime blackberry user, and recently proudly moved to nokia messaging beta, was on top of the world, now with open connectivity closed, the only people laughing at us jerks is no other than blackberry RIM guys.

So the longer our connection gateway is closed to allow true mobility, the bigger the laugh.

I think nokia software engineers have listened to this constant call over and over, since they graduated with this release, and should hitch back the OPEN GATEWAY CONNECTION so we dont keep swapping to Yahoo Go 3.0 each time we are on the move from location to location.

i can confirm the statements in post #112 by Mark Williams (who gave Dave Fields credit)

1. i sent the an email to support@nokiamessaging.com
2. i got an auto reply, indicating that the mailbox serves only the purpose of fixing email sending / error 500 messages
3. i got a personal email indicating that the issue was corrected, and anyone on my domain would have the issue fixed also
4. i tested and indeed the issue was fixed

this all took place over the course of a few hours. yay! :)

I have been using the Nokia email client on my E90 for the last few days. Today Yahoo mail started giving me a problem. Whenever I send an email I am getting a Delivery Status Notification (failure)

535 authorization failes (#5.7.0)

I went in to my email.nokia account just to re-enter the password for my yahoo account, and now I even that is throwing the following error "Unable to connect with the password provided. Please try again."

Is there some problem connecting to Yahoo?

I am able to log on to this yahoo account on my PC and send and recieve mails without any issue.

Thanks,
Amar

Worked great for the first 3 days, Now emails show up 6 to 8 hours late (if at all). Its unreliable enough that I am checking it only out of curiosity to see if it working again. Unfortunately the regular Nokia email client is not real good, so without this Nokia phones are not very good as email devices.

While this is a huge issue, I can concur with 112 & 113. I sent an email as 112 recommends. I got the same auto reply right away, BUT I received a personal email later indicating that my problems had been examined and thought they had them fixed. I was given instructions to try my set up again.

I'm up and running with 2 of my 3 email accounts. Let's hope Friday's patch does the trick for my 3rd - and all of yours as well.

Happy 2009 to all.

For those that have stuck not being able to change APNs when connecting to pop/imap mailboxes, I have a 5800 that I have this problem. S60 V5
I have discovered this workaround .....
Try these settings ……
Menu > Settings and Connectivity > Destinations > Options > Default Connection > o Alway Ask
This appears to have the affect of setting all connections to “Always ask”
Then …..
In “email settings” for the email account of your choice,
Options > E-mail Settings > Connection Settings > Incoming/Outgoing e-mail > Access point in use > o Default Connection

I stress this works on my 5800, your mileage may vary ….
Hope it helps some people

Mike

This is really bad. I have tried and installed Nokia Email countless times. But it refuses to sync, I don't even receive error messages. I have even tried to log on to emai.nokia.com to check and reset my account settings.

Solution for now; I have installed Profimail, it works like a dream. Downside is that it does not sync my Gmail contacts and I think the Nokia interface looks better.

I will continue to keep an eye on any new patches/versions of Nokia Email but as of today, this software should never have been allowed to graduate. Let alone even thinking of charging people for it.

My email Yahoo accounts were working fine up until January 14th/15th, then no more successful sync, it seems nokia messaging is not connecting at all to the email account servers, as it cannot verify our email or password.

But I access my email flawlessly with no problem thru the web-portal, so the problem is NOKIA MESSAGING graduate release that is not connecting to conduct the email sync.

I think Nokia must change display message, stating, "Nokia Messaging server Temporally out-of-order", instead of stating email address or password are wrong, and unable to connect.

It would save us users time, double checking that our original email accounts are fine "Thank God" and its simply the Nokia Messaging server growing pains...

APN management in the current version is very fragile. I fiddled with my SmartConnect groups and managed to break Nokia Email.

The fix was to remove it from the phone, fiddle with the online account, resend the installation SMS, and reinstall.

What's technical necessary for an email account to work with Nokia Mail? Hello,

After to installing upgrade application is not opening at all, tried to reinstall app at least 10 times and never got it work, I think Nokia should stop investing money which will never going to work, instead provide profimail for free to their users, which I am using now, I need to pay little but it's best application for email.

Nokia guys please think of my suggestion.

The automatic configuration option did not work for me at all. I used a completely bogus domain name (eg. www.aoeuaeu.auaeuoeu) and this forced the manual configuration option. It was interesting because I had to do this twice. The first time the manual setup did not give all the options, but the second time the manual setup gave me all the manual options (really needed the port setup option). When I used the manual configuration settings it work great with my gmail account. It would be extremely nice if nokia would add an option where you can setup your configuration manually. Because my system is working so well now I not going to try this, but I suspect if you setup your gmail account with the default settings you will probably will be okay. My gmail account is highly modified and that is probably the problem. I have pop turned off but imap turned on, and other options none default options are used by me.

I have a problem with the From-field (sender name) not being relayed when using a GMail-account. It shows my GMail-address as the sender (in the From-field) instead. Have others had this problem?

I haven't tried adding other accounts, so I have no idea if this is only related to GMail.

Application on the phone is updated to the feb 18 release.

I thought it would work with any IMAP account... sigh. I have contacted the Nokia Email support and also the feedback channel via email, so I hope to get an answer from Nokia tomorrow, after the weekend.

#218 Akif Wed, 2009-01-07 06:58

Hi there

good day. I am based in Malawi in Africa and we finally have access to GPRS here!

Firstly the Product that i am using is a Nokia E71. I also have a Nokia E51 which i intend to set up later.

The problem i am facing is as follows:

I have downloaded (using the link sent to me via an SMS after registering) and installed Nokia Messaging for being able to get my emails on the go yesterday.

It has installed succesfully and i am able to receive my emails from my pop3 account(local ISP account). However when i try and send emails to certain email addresses, they go through but after a minute or so i get a Delivery Faliure notification from postmaster@VIESHSMTP01.vie.ad basically saying that my email has not been delivered. Infact i even tried to send a mail to the same address that i have registered with Nokia Messaging and i get the same failure report.

However if i send and email using Nokia messaging to a web based email account such as gmail, it goes through without a problem.

Please could you advise me how to rectify this as i am not able to mail most of my business collegues as they have local Malawian ISP email addresses.

Secondly on Nokia Messaging, how does one change the access point? As in how do i select a different connection to the internet as i don't see any way of doing this in the options. Upon the installation it asks for the access point to use but subsequently i cannot find any option that allows you to change the selection made at the time of installation.

I look forward to your response.

Thanx
Akif

After trying to install the new Nokia Messaging client on my E71, and getting all the errors listed above, i finally succeded. Here are the solutions -

First thing is to uninstall previous version from your phone - Use App Manager in Installation folder to uninstall. Then DO restart the phone.

- Go online to Nokia Messaging website, and delete all email accounts if they are still there, then re-enter new details to create new email accounts

- Install latest version, if after installation you get
Error “unable to connect with the information provided. please try again” - Go to the "Settings" tab in the Nokia Email application, choose "Advanced", then "Account Info", then input your email password again.

This should solve the problem and get it working and syncing properly.

- 2nd problem with Default Access point and how to change preffered connection -

- The application will set as default the connection it used in the set-up. To change this, go to the "Settings" tab in the Nokia Email application, choose "Advanced", then "Account Info", then scroll to the bottom and choose "Access Point" You will get a list of all AP's ever used on the phone, you can then choose your preffered Access Point to use for the app - WiFi or 3G.
This is actually better than the Beta version as you can change this after installation according to your needs.

Hope this helps. Keni

@iskandar
do a regular text search on this page for "error 500" and you'll find (among others) post #113 where i reiterated the solution to this problem.

the problem you've had over the last 2 weeks takes only a few hours for them to fix on your behalf - you just need to email them and let them know.

i did. 2-3 hours later i was running perfectly, with no effort on my end at all (aside from emailing them)

I have an E71 and have been using the old Beta no problem since Oct 2008. The problem started when I update to the new version just before xmas. I still can receive emails but no longer can send. Sent mails bounced back instantly with 504 error code.

Few days ago, i sent an email to support and after a few hours received a reply from a real support person (apart from the auto reply junk). She or He was very helpful and manage to rectify the problem after 4 hours and a few emails back and forth with me. The problem was the wrong setting at Nokia end for the smtp setting for my POP3 account. I was able to send email again and I am very happy and grateful for the dedication of the support team/persons.

After that i have only one (not)small problem, I cant receive any mails! I can send but nothing will come into my phone inbox! No push,no nothing even when i manual sync!

That was two days ago, suddenly i notice a few emails arrived in my phone inbox today. They arrived much later than the same copy in Outlook and not all mails come to my phone when i compare them to my Outlook copies. After a while i notice that all mails that arrived to the main inbox folder in outlook that has not been moved to sub folders by my outlook rules will appear on my phone. All mails that get filter by Outlook rules and been auto moved to sub folder will not work. I think there is a problem with the sync command in the server side, may be it does not or cant look into my POP3 sub folder.

I will do some more praying tonight and hope that i dont have to worship the Black berry god anytime soon.

Best regard and please help me,

Goonie

@TIno
there is wifi support.
It's just that you have to select access point through setting>general>service info>"your wifi access point"
If you have already set wifi for web before, then you should just select that access point.

@Mizanur
I am not sure myself, but with your condition, I believe that is the answer for all of us, for now.

Nokia Mail solution

Excellent mail module. Some comments:

I use a e61i.

Mail worked very well immediately after installation. However, after 3 or 4 days, one of the mailbox stopped working. I tried to sync many times, put it off and then on again etc, but it would not work. Then I removed it from phone and from the email.nokia.com site and then re-entered all details, then it started working again. After 3 more days, it happended again with another of my email account and only when I followed same process, it restarted.

Now again one of the email boxes has stopped working.

Meanwhile, on same phone I do have blackberry connection (using e61i's blackberry support software) and that has been working without stop all the while.

Regards

Paresh
