Major update for Nokia Audiobooks (the rumors of our death have been greatly exaggerated)

Hi all,
I am Janne Vainio, one of the Nokia audiobook developers and one who started it mainly for my own pleasure :-). My favourite books are made of paper and leather but I am also big fan of audiobooks, which enable book "reading" in occasions normal books can not be read. I apologized for big delay in updating the software but it is currently developed just as a side project within other activities, so it is not really lack of interest but just lack of time to make so slow updates.
Anyhow, here it comes finally as a small Christmas present, hopefully answering at least some of the good comments we have received. We are still reading ALL OF THEM even not have time to answer for everybody anymore, so please keep feedback coming it is extremely useful especially taking into consideration our limited resources for testing and bug hunting.
Download updated Nokia Audiobooks here.
One big practical improvement for new users of our audiobook client is the single SIS file we have created. So, now you do not have to know whether you phone is 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 or 99.99 version or whatever. You only have one SIS-file to download. However, it does not work on all models yet (like very old or touch phones) but now you only have to try one SIS file to see whether it works on your device. If it does not work, you should give us feedback about that.
For client UI, there are some small but nice improvements. You can now enable normal clock in UI view, so there is no need to do any task switching to go to idle screen to look what time it is. This has been sometimes irritating because at least I am using my phone also as a clock and have to check time many times when using audiobook client. Also sleep timer is improved and you can now set it for different time intervals. You also get status display showing in minutes, how much you have time left in sleep timer. Also if you have book with length more than 24 hours, the UI is now displaying the time correctly. At least in Finland, there are many good books with duration of 24 hours or even more. In English markets, unfortunately books are too often butchered to abridged versions of couple of hours, which should be capital crime.
For audiobook manager, there is probably even more fundamental improvements. It now includes simple library manager, in which you can see books in your PC and in phone and transfer and delete them between phone and PC. Also PC-SUITE data transfer is supported and this has the very nice implication that you can now use bluetooth data transfer without any cables. You can also delete wav-files after ripping to save disk space. Also the volume control is improved and you should be now able to generate audiobooks with better volume levels especially for books with high recording quality. Also Scandinavian letters are now supported in book names. This may also help with some other non-English languages even we have not been able to test that claim. Please give feedback if you have still problems with some special characters in book or chapter names.
Also for both the manager and client, we have been doing lots of listening ourselves and hopefully many small bugs have been ironed out. However, there may be some new ones and some existing one still living in the code, so please keep any bug reports coming back to us. We really appreciate that!.
We also have some updates, which are almost ready but we could not include them in this release, so we may be able to make next release a bit faster, hopefully in Spring time.

So buggy: the PC software crashes when you click on Library transfer. The mobile software doesn't use the multimedia keys in N95. I prefer to tag my mp3 files as "Podcast", so the built-in audio player remembers the last position inside a file. Much simpler.
@Kevin
Thats what i am talking about. In Program files, it nicely installs in one single directory, but in the start menu, they install a different folder for each app. Instead of that, i am suggesting that all the app shortcuts in the start menu be placed under a single Nokia folder.
Great!! One of my favourite apps and definately one of the apps that enhanches the "nokia experience". great work
The earlier version I downloaded still worked with wine in Linux, the new one doesn't. It crashes whenever any button is pressed. This is quite annoying, but then again, I think I can whip up a script that does basically the same things in Linux natively quite easily.
[...]Thanks for sharing your work with us! Your theme is just awesome![...]
@Rob - in order to convert mp3 files to the Nokia Audiobook format you need to have a decoder available in the Audiobook manager directory. See this page http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/audiobooks/ and go to the section "Optional mp3 decoder".
Once you have copy the lame.exe file to the audiobook manager directory you can start Audiobook manager and it should be able to process mp3 files.
Ref the above post, I forgot to add I'm running Windows Vista, sp1
Christmas came early this year! Looking forward too trying this out on my N96.
Will this come out for n810 though?
How do you get stories on the nokia platform. I'd like to see audio books by newfiction.com on the platform.
Tom
Okay, here is the major problem i have with all of Nokia's Windows Apps! Why do you want a new folder in the Root "Programs" folder in the start meny for each of your apps.
Why can't there be a main Nokia folder and all the apps shortcuts placed in sub folders!! Like it is done in Program Files.
I have been repeatedly requesting the PC Suite team to take the lead, but all the different teams at nokia want to follow a different UI approach and a different folder in the start menu.
Also, i am not able to transfer the books via the AudioManager Library to my N85.
I downloaded the three Audiobooks - Alice, Treasure Island & Art of War.
It is able to copy Alice. Gives an error that no able to create the directory for Art of War. And with Treasure, it gets stuck at around 90%!
Wow, great! I had wanted to try this program, but hesitated because it looked dead. Now we get it just in time for our travels to visit the relatives. Can't wait!
@Alsiladka Interestingly, all my Nokia apps (including Audiobooks, PC Suite, Music, and more) install in some subdirectory of C:\program files\nokia on my computer. That is nice and organized!
Hi.
Love your initiative with this program. But I have a problem. When I push should select files the only ones that show are wav files. All other types of files (wma, MP3 etc) resuses to show in the "input media files" area and the process button stay gray. If I try to convert the files into wav with another program it works but should that be necessary?
Sincerely
UF
Yay!
Thanks for the updated application. I *was* worried that the Audiobook player had died, but I'm very excited to try it out.
I wonder if this application will support Audible's .aa-audio book format?
Bye
Marc
GREAT program. It's very convenient to have a separate application for the audiobooks.
I have one wish though, the application does not respond to pause/play commands from my bluetooth headset. The std S60 musicapplication responds but not this application. Please fix.
Once again, thanks for a great program
Thanks for the help. I have installed lame.exe but discovered you have to change the program so that it 'runs as an administrator' then it's OK. It has successfully converted the mp3 file but the library manager doesn't run, it crashes. One in a previous post mentioned this. Presumbly there is no reason why you can't manually transfer the file to the phone usuing Nokia PC suite file manager?
I had already given up hope for the development and here it comes - the best xmas present! Thank you!! I hope you will support touch phones soon. I cannot buy a Touch before I can use Nokia Audiobooks on it :)
1. this is the partial decision of a problem about russian characters in the book and chapters names (Igor write about this in post#38) - book and chapters name will correct displaying russian language on mobile phone (I use E70), _BUT_ uncorrect displaying in nokia audiobook manager (it display strange illegible characters):
Open the *.inx file in text editor. I use OpenOfficeOgr office (MS Office is not installed on my PC). I open the file in writer and when it ask me the propetis of ASCII filter I choose the Unicode encoding (not UTF-7 or UTF-8, simply unicode), standart font - arial, language - English, the break of paragraph - "LF" (may be work fith outher options - I not check).
Then manually edit the book and chapters name in russian language and save the file.
Hi,
Loving this application but one thing I noted today, which is perhaps something I have missed or it is in fact a glitch.
When "reading" a book on audio books I received a message. Unfortunately this message was missed by myself, and only picked up much later when I stopped "reading", as I received no notification and the book kept being read. I have a Nokia N95.
My suggestion would be that the book pauses and the message tone plays so the reader is made aware of the message. Unless this is a setting somewhere that I am not aware of? We need to rememeber that first and foremost our phones are communication devices.
Thanks
Clinton
OK, you beat me to it.
I had planned to write on the blog on the 21st of December 2008 and complain about not getting any updates for a whole year.
Thanks guys, your the best, I hope you can make more time to make this incredible app even better.
For me it has changed the way I listen to audiobooks. I would not dream of buying a cellphone from another company ans long as Nokia still supports Audiobook playback.
I can now use the audiobook manager to transfer books. used to have trouble with it.
The library manager is a nice addition.
Still no way to select files in multiple subfolders.
I hope that's in the works.
I'll try it and see if I encounter any bugs.
Just noticed a bug i suppose.
When i am listening to Audiobooks on the headphones, and receive a call while doing so, if i answer the call and then return to audiobooks, the last saved position is lost and the chapter is restarted!
It is really irritating trying to navigate your way back to the point you had left off last time.
I guess the app still lacks the ability to modify the playback speed? That's the #1 reason why I don't use it more than I do. Most audiobooks are recorded at a reading (i.e., listening) speed to cater for 90-95% of the population. That means it's just too slow to most. I get bored and thoughts start drifting away. Actually, the Nokia podcasting app has the same problem. I wish both teams could get together and solve the common problem. In Dreamland, I would also wish that there was an 'adjustable speed' music player as that would help my pacing when I run and cycle.
I have noticed the same bug. It also happens for calendar reminders. Very annoying.
Hi,
great Application!!!
Why upper quality bound is so low? 23.85 kbit? Why not allow 56 ot whatever user wants?
I 've 8GB free space on mobile. Extra quality would be great.

I have successfully converted CDs to run using audio manager but it doesn't work when selecting existing mp3 files. Just gives me the message saying basically 'not a WAV file'. Does it only work on converting WAV files?
My mistake quote in book name works fine
Library Manager--
fail to create the directory of the second book on the phone if you try to transfers more than one.
@rob: I'm using Vista SP1 as well. Don't recall I had to mark lame.exe as 'Run as admin'. I have UAC enabled in Vista, but my account is an admin account, maybe this makes a difference, not sure.
Regarding tranfer to the phone, you can use USB PC Suite or USB data transfer profile. Just place the book in E:\Audiobooks\. My books are organized like
E:\Audiobooks\Auhtor\book\bookfiles on my N96. The drive may be different on other phones.
Thanks Christian, it wasn't lame.exe I had to run as admin it was nokiaaudiomanager.exe. It seems it's a problem for a number of other too, judging from other posts on this forum.
Thank you for the tips re loading on my phone, I've used this method successfully. It's a bit of a hassle using Audio Manager but noticed an ebook I had of approx 50mb is down to 5 mb after conversion, so its worth a little trouble!
[...]Thanks for sharing your work with us! Your theme is just awesome![...]
A few niggles:
-Inability to select files in multiple folders for transcoding is a bit annoying.
-I agree with Dim, the volume control on the N85 should be consistent among all the apps, it's caught me out once or twice.
-When you go to the "open book" menu on the phone, an annoying info bar pops up telling you to select a book. It's not a big deal, I just don't see the point of it?
But overall, it's a very easy to use app which just works without causing any problems, I can't wait to see what is coming in the next release. Thanks :)
Please fix the audiobook manager!!!! Cannot transfer converted files to E71nokia via manager. Surely it can be done. Software on phone does not recognise audiobook files when manually transfered. Too frustrating!
Please bring out the support of touch phones in next release. I have 5800XM and the applicaiton installs on it without any error, but doesn't show up in the Application menu. The only place it does show itself is under the Applicatoin Manager from where one can only uninstall it :-(
On the other hands you guys could have added the support of bookmarks in the Music Player itself.
Government documents now available on AudioBooks. Keep up with Obama's fast moving government! To download the latest government documents on audio, visit www.ativioaudio.com.
Audiobook app on N85 --
When using the up down button on the side of N85 to change volume.
If the screen is vertical up increase low decrease
if the screen is landscape left decrease right increase. It's seems to be a good idea but with phone in the pocket it's not easy to know how to lower volume. it's inconsistent with the other nokia apps like Mp3 player and normal phone call which don't change the button functions with screen rotation.
librarymanager --
In nokia audiobook manager you can create a book with the name "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" for example. Everything works fine til the librarymanager where the transfer Fail because of a quote in the directory name. If i replace the quote (in directory not audiobookname) everything is ok.
nokia audiobook manager--
-You can launch only one nokia audiobook manager at a time, but the manager seems to only work on one processor so if you want to convert 2 books you'll always wait full time.
-The tab order is "crazy" for exemple name of the book->tab->select picture->tab->audiobook folder...
-The is no Alt-key shortcut for buttons/radiogroups...
Please add support for V5 (5800 XM).
Great App I'm using it for a month now, and really like it.
The only thing I miss is the lack of support of the Nokia headphone remote. When someone talks to me I push pause and then a MP3 start over the audiobook.
Hi,
Seems like a great app, love audio books, any version for the 5800 in sight? Im sure we are many 5800 users who would appreciate it.
Thanks
i have a problem with audiobook manager when i try to convert characters in book or chapter names in russian i get strange illegible characters. Only version 1.03 of audiobook manager can convert russian characters in the correct way. Please fix this issue. thanks.
It's possible to translate teh program in Italian language?
I've used this Nokia Audiobook app on N96 since Dec 2008 and it's been working fine until now. Audiobook app does not save last position for the book I'm now listening too now. I can make bookmarks, but those are not saved either.
Where on the phone is the last position and bookmarks stored? Can I delete the file and have Audiobook app re-create the file that keeps track of position?
Thanks for sharing your work with us! Your theme is just awesome!
I enjoy listening to Greek poetry through an Audiobook. I convert WAV files from CD into an Audiobook (or alternatively use existing MP3 files) using AudioBook Manager 2.03. Though everything goes smoothly in the Audiobook Manager and the Greek fonts appear as they ought to, the Nokia Audiobook Player installed in my E71 fails to recognize the fonts (they appear in strange illegible characters)and consequently the Audiobook audio file is reported as missing -though it would appear in the Book Contents. Pity for an otherwise excellent piece of software which also covers a market gap as there is no PC software combining MP3files into an Audiobook whilst properly preserving a Book folder WITH individual chapters
I too would like support for the nokia 5800 XM too. The bad thing is that I traded in my n95 for the 5800 and the audiobook manager was the first program that I wanted to install and when it failed I nearly cried.
I guess the best way to get Audiobooks working on S60 5th edition devices soon would be to make sure Janne Vainio uses such a device. Nokia: please give him a N97 or 5800 XpressMusic. With this relatively small investment he will certainly (on his free time if needed) make sure Audiobooks runs on it ASAP. This would generate more income for Nokia as I and other Audiobooks addicts could and would then upgrade to newer Nokia models. I am really looking forward to upgrading to N97 but due to Audiobooks I am now stuck to 3rd edition devices.
I have bought a 5530 phone, which is a great simple device, but now I am thinking of returning it. It is very inconvenient to listen to audiobooks - and I spend up to 3 hours per day listening to them. I'm really waiting for some changes. Please think of us!
hi, i have an X6 and don't know how to listen the audiobooks in awb-format.
what do i have to do??? any help would be appreciated.
it seems that the audiobook-manager mentioned on the top does not work on the X6...
thanks in advance...
Great!! One of my favourite apps and definately one of the apps that enhanches the "nokia experience". great work
