Written by: Kee, Nokia Maps team

Hi all,

Firstly, our Maps team would like to thank those who have provided feedback, bugs, blog entries, suggestions and surveys over the last few months - This has been extremely helpful in enhancing and “fine tuning” the product – so please keep them coming in! :-) We do review all of your suggestions and where possible we look for opportunities to build them into the product.

Now to the exciting stuff….the Nokia Maps Team is pleased to announce an updated release of Maps 3.0Beta. One of the eagerly awaited news is that this updated version now supports S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 devices and N96!

In addition to this, there are also some new features/enhancements to the previous release:

  • Start-up sequence takes you to your current position as soon as position is found. If your position is not found in few seconds, you are taken to last known position
  • You can rotate the map, so you can for example view 3D landmarks from all directions. Just press 4 and 6 in map view. Pressing 5 takes you back to 'north up' view
  • In 3D view mode, you can tilt the view by pressing 2 and 8
  • 2D/3D mode works with all map modes, i.e. with Map/Satellite/Terrain
  • My Favourites menu is cleaned up and History list is moved higher in menu
  • My Places has option "Point me to" for any saved place/landmark, you the direction to that place on the map
  • In addition to the synchronisation of Favourites and Collections with Ovi MapsBeta and vice versa (use in online mode, enable Internet connection), you can now plan routings on Ovi MapsBeta and synchronise to your device
  • Finally, many bugs have now been fixed

Maps 3.0Beta works with all Nokia devices based on:
S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 (E71, E66, 6110 Navigator, N95, N95 8GB, N82)
S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (N96, N85, N79, 6650, 6210 Navigator, 6220 Classic, N78)

Try it out for yourself and let us know feedback!

Many thanks and enjoy!

The program seems to be very good BUT, of course , Romania is again sent to trash can with only 7.9 MB of map. People of NOKIA, have you noticed that Lichtenstein , which has 5000 inhabitants has a map larger or pretty close in size as Romania? Wouldnt you be frustrated if Finland or UK map would only show street in you capitals? (which, despite you, I know, Helsinki and London). It is absolutely inadmittable that a country with probably a very big percent of the Nokia handsets in Europe to have a map of 7.9 MB. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. This country has 23 MILLION inhabitants and 260 .000 square kilometers. Do you think it is a desert?

installed Maps 3.0 to N96 and followed your instruction to delete "cities" and "qf" file, launch Maps 3.0 several times still getting the same error message 'not enough memory to start application' checking the mass memory i can see that the "cities' folder is recreated in the mass memory. Need your advice on this to get it started.

Larry.

"Cannot install. Component is built in." N82, Norwegian, newest firmware.

tried installing the sis file on the nokia n85. installation went through but can't open for first time. Getting error not enough memory

Hi

assalam Ala mn itaba al-hoda

i have 5800XM

does it work in 5800 or n97 ? or just work in 3rd Edition ?!!

TNX

Cannot install, component is built in (in finnish). Finnish N82, newest firmware.

the search on map like on v2 had gone although i read in help it can be found by clicking on options search but didn't find it!!

Does not work on S60.
Does not even work on S603rd edition.

Does only work on S603rd edition feature pack 1-2.

Sorry, but that's the best way to make sure that S60 customers switch to Apple or android.

(E65 owner, who once thought that buying a Nokia S60 Smartphone would mean to be able to install S60 software)

Any news on when this will work on the 5800XM? Looking forward to trying this out :-)

hi i'm N70 user. My phone firmware version is 5.0737.3.0.1 and date is 13-09-2007 RM 84. I'm confused it has a greater version of firmware than tha latest update available on the NET. Every time when i connect and try to update the updater shows the message that I already have a latest update. Can any body help me to tell what is happening with my phone ?

Hi,
I did the steps as ordered, delete the Cities folder and qf file from the Mass Memory but I'm still getting the same error when I try to launch Map 3.0. "Not enough memory to start the application"...y??

Erm, twist3r... Navteq = Nokia ;)

http://www.nokia.com/A4136001?newsid=1157198

Does Nokia maps 3 truncate the postcode search to 4 characters like current nokia maps does. ie PR5 3RT becomes PR5 3, which is probably about 1/2 mile from where you need to be. Nokia Maps used to do full postcode searches, why oh why have you taken a step backwards??? No other navigation software is so restrictive.

Why Mac OS X users are ignored?

Nokia N82 wi th the latest firmware installed (31.0.0.16) - also says "Unable to install. Component is built-in."

Hope betalabs fix this soon, I'd like to test the new Nokia Maps 3.0!

Ovi maps not compatible with internet explorer v8. When will it be?

Is it possible to make Maps actually stay on screen without the screen saver kicking in, I have TomTom for my N95 and it manages it without a problem. What is the point of having this as a driving aid if the screen keeps going blank every 1.5 minutes?

looks like there should of been more testing done on this? Maybe let up know what going on, then release it when its a bit more stable on most of the "supported devices"

at last i have install nokia beta version on my 95, so far so bad..at the very beggining ''Not enough memory to start the application'' error..so i have deleted cities folder, and restart it again, so it has started for a while and then closed itself, i went back to files manager cities folder was still there, so deleted again, restarted maps application, same things happened again and again..at last i realize that maps is closing when i try to download map via w-lan or gprs. while i am not downloading anything, maps appl.is not closing at all. i have tried to install maps via nokia map loader, t but the application does not recognize my phone at all, juts it keeps flashing and telling that ''waiting for device..so what might be wrong with my phone? thanks

Got an 'unable to install' message on my Navigator 6110. I don't have Maps 2.0 (well, I did but it vanished). I do have Viewranger

@ kee: as mentioend before, can we get some feedback when better maps for Romania are gonna see light of day? It is quite frustrating to pay few hundred EUR (gues what, Nokia is not cheaper in Eastern Europe) and to find out that, well, you are in a "desert", to quote a fellow above.

Thx

Hi Mark,
Please could you let me know via the Maps 3.0 Beta discussion forums http://betalabs.nokia.com/forum/topic/647?page=1

Your software version (you can find this by typing *#0000#):

Once we have this, we will try and reproduce the error.

I have a N96. I put the maps 3.0. Perfect for me but when i know the speed limit in the city or a town. Outside of the town, and on a motorway was briliant. Its said when i go faster than 60 or 70 (motorway). Great
And when we have a Speed Cam information?
Cheers

N82 - (31.0.0.16) - also says

Yes but it's a tottaly different part of Nokia Group. It's not the Nokia Maps team who does maps.

i have n82 ,when i tried to install maps 3.0 said unable to install component is built in.plz help

this sucks, after the license is over no more turn directions, it sucks, you have to pay over $200 every year for this map key, and also satellite view doesn't work. is there a solution to get the activation code for free for walk & drive???

Hi all!
I have:
- N95 8GB V 31.0.015
- Nokia Maps v3.0 09wk03 b02 (syncing with Ovi Maps POI and routes)
And report some bugs:
1. After Nokia Maps start it tries to find actual position with GPS. Even if i turn it off, yellow "light" on the GPS signal bar blinks (still searching position?).
2. When I open saved route with several via points, some of them are empty (only icon, no name/address). It's not possible also to use this route in navigation. Cannot find route. Still "Calculating route" and nothing happens.
3. In most cases route type "Faster route" is shorter(!) than "Shorter route". Algorithm of "Optimised" is strange. In most cases the same as "Faster route".
4. Point entries in folders of "My Favorites" created on Maps on Ovi and sync to N95 8GB device are displayed "too tight" to each other. Spaces between title and smaller text under (detailed address, km, etc.) are to small.

@50 yeah!

It works in N79, just like previous beta-versions. Now also with Finnish Female voice :p Still hoping map zooming in route overview.

I get the same message as twist3r on my N82 with recent firmware upgrade: Unable to install. Component is built-in.

Same problem than twist3r & Hanson on my N82 : Unable to install. Component is built-in :(

With 82.6mb of free RAM on my N82, it tells me "Not enough memory to start the application"

Why is there no version for pre fp1 phones? I'm very sad.

Hi SD87,
It sounds like the Maps Updater didn

Thanks Kee, it worked

All successfully installed, and launched on my N95-1. Very impressed so far.!

Just about to check on my N95-2, and N82 next, will report back my findings.

Keep up the great work. This version rocks.

Atlast!! Will give it a go in some time :)

Just installed on my E71. All seemed well until I atampted to start Maps and got "Not enough memory to start the application".

SimonJ

Nokia Maps Updater can connect to my Nokia N85 but it gets stuck at "Checking for software updates for N85. Screenshot: http://is.gd/iVun

Hi SimonJ,
It sounds like the Maps Updater didn't fully delete the old map data on the memory card. In order to resolve this, go to your memory card (e.g. via File Manager) and delete the "Cities" folder. After that, restart Maps 3.0 and it should work.

Thanks,

Kee
Nokia Maps Team

I got the "Not enough memory to start the application" message, delete the "Cities" folder and the "qf" file, restart nokia map 3.0 again, but still get the same error message. Please help!

@88 Try Options->Tools->Settings->Navigation->Backlight and set it to "Always on".

Any clue as to when the S60 V5 version will be out ?

Even with the latest Maps 3.0, its a piece of crap.

1. I am on a pay-as-you-go plan, and the damn thing keeps accessing the network even though I have told it not to (Positioning-> only Integrated GPS, dont go online while starting) but the POS still keeps accessing for some goddamn reason. Does it secretly ring home ? Whats going on...I've never been as frustrated with this stupid phone after reading all the positive fan-boy reviews...damn I was taken for a ride !!

2. Why dont they shove the CD that comes with it up their A#@ as it is so outdated ..just dont send a CD dammit, dont waste our time. I had to uninstall and reinstall eveything to get the stupid latest software to work.

3. Never gets a lock into GPS on time, sometimes never, whereas Google maps always gets it in a few seconds.

I'll stick to (ugh) Apple or (uggggh) Windows products next time instead of this european crap that has a charge for every inifinitesmal addon. Dont believe all the hype about a lot of software being available for Symbian...just loads of crap !!

@ Hurraa - Comment number 10

This update is compatible with Feature pack 1 devices.

***** nokia beta labs. I dont know i bought a 5800-

If a knew that...

Back in action, thanks Kee.

Looking good so far, the zoom in and out feels much more responsive and the new map loader app works in Windows 7.

SimonJ

Integration with Ovi? Why is there still no integration with the address book that's on all phones?

markgunn,
I have the same problem with my N85. USB connection never worked, but BT did. Give that a try if you can.

I cannot instal Nokia Maps v3.0 beta on my N78. It says: "Component is built-in" . That's all.

works like a charm on my e51. Which the installation process would be just via a sis file, though

I got the .sis from a website and instaled directly, removed the .qf and "cities" folder from the memory card and nokia maps 3.0 worked like a charm.

There is no need to install it thought a pc application, this leaves Linux and Mac OS X users alone in the dark. Why Linux and Mac OS X users are ignored? Why not just a .sis download?

It'd be nice if there was a mechanism for Mac and Linux users to install this without having to go borrow someone's Windows PC.

Looks good, but I wont be updating anytime soon. I won a license from the s60 ambassador program. When i used it the other day before this came out, I noticed you went up on the price for a license. Very bad move. Plus I dont use windows and now if i wanted to install it, I need to install a bunch of apps on a windows box. Not worth my time, sorry :(

If you have assigned address for your contact in Contacts, you can try Options -> Address Search -> (Menu) -> Select from Contacts and you should get those search fields automatically filled from Contacts info.
Is this what you were looking for?

Jaykie

Maybe one feature suggestion could be assigning address to a contact person from within Maps application?

i am using N95 8GB with v31 firmware BUT still cannot install map 3.0. i have deleted the

Installed successfully on a N95-1. The updater application took a while but was successfully able to finish the installation. Also installed on an N96. This time the updater application was only able to install the app and did not clear the CITIES folder.
Overall reasonable installation experience as this is just a beta.

@leoking3
It's not Nokia's fault that Romania has so poor coverage. These maps are provided from maps providers like Navteq, TeleAtlas, etc. In this case, Nokia use Navteq for its maps. So don't blame Nokia beacause it's just stupid, blame Navteq for not includind more Romania coverage in their maps. In fact you shouldn't blame them either, they don't have full Romania coverage beacause it's not worthing. It's all about money and they will not spend money on one country if there are no benefits for it. At this time, there is no benefit. If you want more coverage for romania buy special navigation software, like iGo with their SunCart map wich is pretty good.

And btw, i'm ashamed for your behaviour on this forum. It doesen't make Romanian peoples look better.
ps: I live in Romania too.

I performed a hard reset on my N85 before I tried installing Maps 3.0. It kept giving me a not enough memory error even though I made sure I removed the cities folder in the memory card. Since I did a hard reset, my phone has no other programs on it other than what came with the phone originally. Is my N85 set the only one with this problem???

Having same problem as Larry mentioned on my E71 with latest firmware. Removed cities and qf but still unable to have Maps 3 install... Any clue/tips?

does maps 3 have the ability to show us signal strength/status satellite wise like v1.x had? i have to use the location app to see that. why was this removed in 2.0 anyway? agree with comment #66 btw .. why is the US map so detailed when it's such a minor market for nokia?! middle east and south asia are so poorly detailed! :|

Installed it on my N-95. Looks like work Ok, except that it doesn

Nokia Maps Updater Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.<---- how to solve this?!

Hi. I would like to know when and where can i get the Colombia's Map for the new versi

Postcode search, UK. I purchased the N85 with a primary emphasis being that it included built-in GPS - part of my work is delivery work. I feel cheated by the fact that it is almost useless in the UK, especially where I live (in the Scottish highlands) because the postcode search is so pointless as to cover an area of some hundred miles. KW14 could be anywhere in a hundred mile radius, possibly more. Many of the places I have to deliver to don't have street names or are such small places that they don't feature on a map. Try Bower tower or Halcro, or Bylbster. I have had to give up on the useless sat nav in my phone and use a Tom Tom instead. Like I said I feel really cheated and that the Nokia Maps products is largely irrelevant outside of the cities and a third rate product. Full postcode search is ESSENTIAL, especially for areas of sparse population where roads or villages are too small to otherwise be found. Nokia Maps in my opinion is not 'fit for purpose'. Please Nokia Maps team, listen to your customer base, while you still have it, and word gets around that Nokia Maps is useless.

Nokia N82 v20.0.062 cannot open the application. Still appears 'Not enough memory to open application'. I have deleted 'qf' file and 'cities' folder many times. Still appears 'Not enough memory to open application'. The latest firmware version for my country is v20.0.062

For those having problems with "Component is built-in" errors, a solution that worked for me: It seems that I'd installed the latest version of the "old" Maps v2.0 on my N96 (v12 firmware). So uninstalling it again (Menu -> Applications -> App. Mgr. -> Installed Apps. -> Nokia Maps -> Uninstall) allowed the installation of the new v3.0beta to Just Work :)

For the developers: I believe the problem is due to a conflict with the "Licence Manager" component since after removing the upgraded v2, I was prompted to install the Licence Manager (as part of the v3.0 update) which never happened before.

Truly its not beta its very close to hell
really feel sorry for those who have install and waste there time.I personaly feel been a ginny pig.Its like you guys just made bad program and let us suffer.why didnt you test before providing beta,Ok you said beta that doent gave you right to relese such disaster
Sorry guys about rudeness but some one have to say so i said it

I thank you for a fine application! It has helped me a lot finding my way around Toronto this week :-)

However, I still think searching on Maps 3 could be made a lot easier. Finding a street by typing its name without knowing the actual city should be made possible (the results would be listed according to distance).

The black bar on top of the screen (with street name currently centered) is useless most of the time and wastes a lot of screen space. Make this infobar optional at least.

Finally, do something about the way street names are displayed on the map. There doesn't seem to be any logic where and when they are visible, sometimes it's a chore to find out the name of the street you are currently walking.

@dani2xll
I found a way to use Ovi Maps in IE8! Check the 'Compatibility View' under the Tools menu.
Regards, Martain

Maps 3.0beta on my E71 seems to use network assisted positioning (send 1kB of data, receives 3-5kB) every 30 minutes even though this positioning method is turned off in phone settings. Also network access is turned manually off in Maps settings.

For personal holiday use this could lead to really really bad results.. My roaming charges are already tens of euros because of this :-(

When roaming user NEEDS to be alarmed of any, even minimal, GPRS data use. And the application should of course obey the network assisted positioning method setting or even provide it's own setting for this.

Still can't do waypoint navigation when no suitable maps are available? I thought this had been enabled for version 3?

AARGH! I am having trouble searching existing phone contacts to perform a drive.
When I try to to a search for an address from my contacs, the form fills in well enough. But then when I hit search, it asks for a country code. When I enter that in, it erases all the information pulled up from the phone contact data. I have no way to just drive to a pre-entered location other than to sync it with Ovi.
Looks like I

Why are the maps so bad? According to Nokia Maps, the Taj Mahal, the city of Agra, and the river that flows through it don't exist. Google Maps and many other map apps have maps and satellite images for the greatest piece of architecture on the planet.

If Navteq doesn't have maps with the right coverage, why not use maps from someone else?

And don't tell me that map coverage is the responsibility of another department. I really don't care how you organise things within your company. That's totally irrelevant for anyone who's not a Nokia employee. For people who use Nokia products, Nokia is Nokia.

i think people should make useful comments as this helps the developers to understand the problems experienced by the user and they will be able to rectify the problems, so please dont insult one another on this forum.

Maps 3.0 does not show the location of my geotagged photos. It always displays my current location.

Hi , i would like to know when nokia 5800 music express edition will be included in ovi , because in its application cd ovi is included, but ovi doesnt support d model

When is the support for 3.0 maps available for Nokia 5800 xpress music ??

unable ito install on N82 31.0.016 UK CV "component is built in"
deleted cities folder as someone suggested and now get "no supported phone connected"

What's happening? Any idea when the new Nokia Maps 3.0 will be released for the E90? Seems very quiet from the Nokia Beta team.

when the new beta will be released?

when will this be available for the 5800, also what is the deal with the search post code only searching the first 4characters (unless ur logged on the net) seems like a big flaw!!

starting to think if i should invest in an act sat anv instead of an out dated nokia map. tut shame really.

I'm also asking maps 3.0 for Nokia 5800!

Hi, I downloaded S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 and installed to my N85, but app don't started and throws an error. In what may be the problem? Thx.
Download graphic software

v3.08 is really bad. I can no longer sit in 'drive' and see the traffic ahead, the only way to view it is by going to navigate. If I do this I can see it for all the surrounding roads but can't move to areas I'm going to go through (like birmingham for example). Also a massive pain the the arse is that I can't see it on the route I'm travelling because it's swamped by the blue navigation line. Come on guys it worked well in the previous version I had, this is a MASSIVE step backwards and got me stuck in traffic for around 2 hours
