Introducing Nokia Green Explorer: explore the green corners of the world

Written by: Leena Oiva, Environmental Manager, Nokia Green Explorer team

Green Explorer is a multi-channel service where people dedicated to a sustainable lifestyle can explore and enjoy the world. Through Green Explorer people can share information, give guidance and communicate about eco-friendly traveling. By signing up to the site you can share eco tips and photos, ask questions, add and rank comments and tips for a more enhanced and meaningful travel experience. In addition, map features include images to visualize destinations and Green Explorer points of interest. And you can take it all with you on your mobile device.

This is the beta version of a service which helps people to make the most sustainable, eco-friendly choices while travelling by providing that information directly to their mobile device. By using this tool people can connect to local places in new and better ways. For example, concrete tips about local recycling instructions or local information about sustainable food choices, and suggestions on the best eco-friendly places to visit. No matter where they are, users can reduce their negative impact and also maximize their positive contribution to communities and the environment.

The service also offers different options to select the most sustainable way to get to your destination based on mode of transport, cost, time to destination, and CO2 emissions. You can also look up eco city guides and view an eco news feed from many cities around the world. People can also upload photos with guidance and tips to share. Lonely Planet destinations and WWF projects can also be viewed as points of interest on maps.

However, this is just the beginning. Currently, people using this service will be able to share their own suggestions and tips about local sustainable behaviours, as well as rankings of local businesses and destinations. As the service develops more partners will join us with exciting content and offerings around sustainable travel.

We are excited about this possibility of getting user feedback and ideas for developing the service further from the experienced Beta Labs community. Pls tell us what you think!

Best regards,
Leena Oiva and the rest of Green Explorer team

P.s. note that at this beta phase, the service hasn't been integrated with Nokia Account yet - you need to create a new user account to try it.

Well, not yet, sorry about it (this will be done assuming the initiative gains sufficient momentum). I added a note about this.

tommi correct me if i am wrong here, but when this service was first announced at nokia world it did not support nokia account, so i did not bother with it, but last week when i took a look at it, it did support nokia account. I may be mistaken.

You are correct tommi. Took a further look into it. It suggests to use the same user name as our nokia account if one is available. Using 3 characters or more which i suppose is the same as an ovi account and that is what changed from the past which required 6 characters or more which made it difficultt to use the same ovi account name(in my case 5 characters).
Sorry for the inconvenice.

Glad I saw this!
