Deleted Favourites Data on Beta Release of Ovi Maps

Written by: Ovi Maps team

During some routine service work in the Ovi Maps Beta (http://www.maps.ovi.com), we encountered a glitch in the system. Unfortunately some of your saved Favourites from the time period between late February and April may have been deleted from the system. We have now restored most of that information to the Beta Release of Ovi Maps.

We apologize for any inconvenience this data issue might have caused you. As of Tuesday, April 28th you can get with synchronization your Favourite Places and Routes which exist in Nokia Maps application on your device back to Ovi Maps Beta.

Thanks for the update. A few things, though:

1. This is the 2nd time that an Ovi beta has lost user information. While I recognize that these programs are in beta for a reason, as 'cloud services', uptime and data integrity are of the utmost importance. Outages and data loss like this is why I refuse to use any OTA syncing information - I've yet to find a company/service that treats my contact/calendar information as tenderly as I do. An outage like this might be insignificant to you, but to an individual user, it can be a horrendous experience to lose contacts or landmarks.

I'm interested to know what steps are being taken to ensure that this sort of thing doesn't happen again. As a potential user, I'm less than convinced of Nokia's ability to properly host and maintain this information without losing it, and I'm sure others are, as well.

2. When's the S60v5 version of Maps 3.0 going to be available? :)

Is there a date yet for the full release of Maps 3?

It would be nice if Maps 3 would be installable on the Navigator 6210. I've tried various ways of loading it, without success. I would have thought a 'navigator' device would be considered a priority or are you deliberately doing it because the new navigator model is coming or what?

Hi Ricky,

We apologize for any inconvenience this problem has caused. At Nokia we take user information, privacy and trust very seriously. We are constantly monitoring our data management systems to make sure they comply with applicable data protection and privacy laws.

Kind regards,
J

It's good to be open and honest about there kind of mistakes, but I suspect, that the other providers of similar services are not posting articles about their mistakes in public blogs.

What I am trying to say is, that you may get some unnecessary badwill just because you are being too open with there incidents. Not everyone understand that there things happen as we have seen from all the bashing posts. No news is as sweet as someone's misfortune...

I understand these things can happen, as other should. The question is! Will syncing Ovi on my phone restore these and if not will I need to delete something off the phone to get it to sync again?

I'd rather you get things correct and learn along the way, instead of risking our stored details.

Thanks, Ian (Ish68)

Thanks for informing. I now have some duplicate favourites, which I guess are coming from the restoration. I will cleanup.

By the way: I'm going for a long and complex travel this weekend and decided to roll back to Maps2.0 navigation. There are too many issues on 3.0 beta and no updates has been released since 9th February. I guess all issues have been reported in this blog and in the forum and it would be time to dispatch a new version for testers.
