Introducing Nokia Kamppi trial: experimental indoor positioning service in Helsinki, Finland

Written by: Christian Prehofer, Project Leader, Nokia Kamppi trial

Today we have launched the second phase of our trial in the Kamppi shopping mall in Helsinki. The exciting new feature is indoor positioning – it allows you to see your position inside a building and also allows you to share your location with others. People spend a lot of their time in buildings where existing technology like GPS does no work. The new application uses existing wireless LAN networks in the building to determine your position in the building.

We invite everyone to try this new services if you come to Helsinki – if you cannot make it, sorry - please check the video if you want to follow up. We have done our best to make it very simple and easy to use on many existing phones. You can easily share your location by SMS or connect to your facebook friends, while all time controlling what you share. We’d love to hear from you how you experience this new experimental service!

Unfortunately I can't afford to go to Helsinki. But if the owner of this project allows me to modify the application, I will be glad to test it at my choice of location.
