Hi all,
On behalf of the Maps team we are pleased to present the latest release of Maps 3.0Beta. This is a sneak preview for the Beta Labs community before Maps 3.0Beta finally graduates from Beta Labs.
Unless something unexpected happens, this will be deployed to millions very soon. However, feel free to continue sharing your feedback - if it's not feasible to include your suggestions to improve the final Maps 3.0 release, we'll definitely collate it and take it into account for the future release.
In addition, the team would like to thank those who have contributed with feedback including the bugs and suggestion over the last few months. These have been vitally useful to the team in improving the product.
Now to the enhancements…for those with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia N97, you will be pleased to know that these devices are now supported!
In addition to this, the new release includes:
Maps 3.0Beta works with Nokia devices based on:
S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 (E63, E66, E71, E90 Communicator, N81, N81 8GB, N82, N95, N95 8GB)
S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (E55, E75, N78, N79, N85, N86 8MP, N96, 5320 XpressMusic, 5630 XpressMusic, 5730 XpressMusic, 6210 Navigator, 6220 Classic, 6650, 6710 Navigator, 6720 Classic)
S60 5th Edition (5800 XpressMusic & N97)
Ovi MapsBeta for web works on IE6 (Windows XP), IE7, Firefox 2, Firefox 3 (Windows XP or Vista) and Safari 3 (Mac)
Please download the new Maps Updater and Map Loader via Beta Labs to get started!
Thanks and enjoy,
Kee

Thanks Kee and the team
That's me busy this evenin, what with the maps update and Burnout Paradise Big Surf Island releasing on the same day. I don't know how I'm going to fit in any sleep tonight.
How sad does that sound, but it's true.

Mac users
Any chance for a separate .sis for us mac users? I really don't want to mess around with virtual machines again.
Some Mac love, please!!
Hi,
I was very happy to use the Nokia Map Updater for Mac. But, are there any plans to release the "Maps 3.0 Beta" through the Mac client too?? Please! Of course you do have some .sis/.sisx file, and Macs can transfer them via bluetooth, at the very least!!
If not anything else, at least an over the air update procedure should be made available!! Not too much to ask for, considering that Nokia is positioning itself as a web services company as well!!
Regards,
Anup
Maps automatically downloaded by the Maps Updater
It looks like the instructions at the download page need some update - the Maps Updater program is doing everything by itself - downloading and installing new Maps program, deleting the old maps data and then downloading the new version of map data.
The last step isn't mentioned in the instructions at the Download page, I thought it needs to be done by the Map Loader program.
That being said, I am looking forward to try this release, it sounds quite good!
And yes, I second adroit.91 above - OTA update would be really good, it is becoming a standard these days, MUCH easier for an end user, and no Windows/Mac/Linux compatibility problems ...
Wow! Fantastic improvement!
I just tried the new Nokia/Ovi Maps for 10 min and I am just blown away by the performance.
I haven't tried previous 3.0 beta version, just now jumped from the version 2.0.
This is much, much improved comparing to version 2. Completely different feeling.
The scrolling is smooth, and zooming is super smooth, such a big change from frustrating slowness of previous version that was making it practically unusable.
I also see that maps for many countries are bigger in size and are improved a lot.
I can actually now use Ovi Maps instead of Google Maps.
Thanks for this great application!
I actually gave up on new Nokia N97 as an upgrade to my N95 8GB, but this application makes me consider it again. It looks like you guys are moving in the right direction...
Thumbs up Nokia!
Bugs to report
Cant seem to be able to post in bug forum, and do not receive any email to confirm me.
1. When you see the map for a favourite (select favourite and see on map), the borders and streets flicker if you zoom in or out and if you move around. This happened every time I tried it.
2. Maybe not a bug, but buttons 4 and 6 only rotate when you are not localised with the red dot (press 0).
Great app so far!
Nice, but still quite buggy on E71
I tried it last night. It took quite a while to install using the new Map Loader (about 45 minutes).
After it was finally finished I tried to let it search for a place. It crashed every time I tried to select the search function. Without being able to search for a place it's completely useless for me so far.
When I went back to Maps 2.0 it lost my license code for Drive & Walk. I had to call Nokia Care to help me (still waiting for the solution)!
suggestion
Why not have the extended database of points of interest as an optional download using map loader?
I dont want to have to go online for the extra POIs, and I have lots of space on my phone N95 8GB.
peace
Problem updating
Hi there!
I'm running into a problem updating Maps. I've got a 5800XM, it's detected in PC Suite, all software are updated (except for maps).
I've run Maps 2.0 on the phone multiple times already.
The Maps Updater won't detect my phone no matter how I try though.
I'm using USB connection with Windows Vista.
regards
Problem updating - Update
Hi,
I've found the solution.
I've deleted the Cities directory and the qf file on the memory card and then re-launched Maps 2.0. The update worked after Maps 2.0 finished initializing the new data cache.
Some bugs...
Hello, I updated Ovi Maps Beta for mobile today and when I want to open in Options the "About section", to see informations about this version of Ovi Maps, the application closes alone !
When in the Options I choose "Shop and licenses" and then "My licenses" it's the same, the application closes alone !
When I open Ovi Maps I always have this message : "This application requires License Manager. Download ? Yes or no ? "
It'a little bit boring...
Bug report
first off id like to say thanks for this latest version, it finally works on my N82, and id say most of the installation issues ppl were having should have been resolved as well i guess.
However there is a minor bug i noticed,
When i center on a favorite location, and i start zooming, the title bar starts to flicker quite fast..
exact string of operations is
start -> options -> favourites -> places -> (pick one and open) -> zoom
The title bar is more or less constantly flickering at this point.
edit : I see pcborg has already reported this and another bug that i forgot.
I was also curious if Ovi maps sync will be linked to the ovi sync that is already present? or is this possible already?
Bug report
Yes I'm experiencing the same problem a Ktaragorn, when using favourities places - The screen on my N95 8GB flickers. Any suggestion or bug fix from the Maps beta Team ????
Klaragorn - how were you able to install it to your N82.?
I get the component is built in error. Latest firmware.
Suggestion for maploader
Hi,
To make loading faster when loading multiple maps, why not have the application continue downloading while saving to the handset?!
Probs with my E71
Hi Kee, hi team,
i have probs with my E71! when i start ovi maps 3, search for an andress and click "show on map", then ovi maps turns off completely. Could anybody help me? :(
Thank you, best regards, dave
N97 Issues
Maps 3.0 doesn't appear to work properly with the compass on my N97. Also, there is no My Location within the Options menu. How can I return to my current location from where I have scrolled?
emrossel - I too get the same error
I am also getting the same error "Component is built-in" on Nokia N82 with the latest firmware. I have used latest Nokia PC suite, Map updater. I tried to install after removing the cities folder and qf file. Still getting the same error. And Map updater is a piece of shit .. it needs to download the file everytime when I have to retry. Wasted a whole day. I am sure Nokia folks are saying "We are not making N82s any more, so we don't bother". Now I do not have Maps 2.0 also working (all my maps gone). This is one of the worst softwares that I have tried. (I was tempted by seeing the status "Works great" in the download page). If you need any more information to rootcause the issue - please feel free to contact me.
N 97 - Maps crashes after a few seconds
My N97 crashes everytime i start the navigation. I tried different settings, but it happens everytime after a few seconds. Until the crash everything works ok... same for me: if i can help you somehow with more information feel free to contact me.
N95-1 crashes when I search for an address
I'm facing a problem with my N95 everytime I try to search an address in OVI Maps 3.0. I have the latest firmware, and already tried to reinstall OMM 3.0 but no success.
E61i
Does anyone know whether the E61i will be supported in the near future?
I truly hope this version isn't considered near gold
Much less reliable than the originally shipped map app on my 5800.
1) Often doesnt update position after first loading (I have to keep restarting the whole app, though Sports Tracker doesnt have this problem),
2) complains about incompatible licenses
3) wants to go online regularly when it really doesnt have to (GPS sats fixed and working fine).
4) get stuck in "infinite zooms". That is, say I brush my finger across the screen to scroll. If I accidentally catch the zoom buttons (once), it triggers a repeated series of zooms until I'm looking at Planet Earth in it's entirety, or maximum zoom. Even if that wasn't the case, the zoom buttons still need to be better protected against accidental pressing.
Is there a new release on the horizon?
