Finally, Ovi Contacts support for Touch
Thu, 2009-07-02 12:27Written by: Kristian Luoma, Product Manager, Ovi Contacts
Hey Beta Labs,
It has taken so very long time for us to enable support for S60 5th Edition products that it is unfair to anybody with the beautiful 5800 XpressMusic in their pocket. Now, as the second touch device, N97 is available in some parts of the world, we're finally able to make the Ovi Contacts available for these products. The app contains the same features, as the 3rd Edition variants, but now obviously with Touch support.
In N97, however, there is something interesting to tell about. That is, ability to integrate your instant messaging friends with the contact cards in your traditional contact list. By doing this, you can see the presence status of your friends in the main phonebook tab too.
Here's how you can do it too:
- Select the contact you want to link from the Ovi Contacts tab
- Choose either create new or update existing (depending on if you have the contact in your main phonebook tab already or not)
- Update the details, and you're done

Also, if you use the Favourite Contacts feature in N97, you'll be able to see when your friends are online directly from the device home screen.

We've also made some improvements for our contact list management system, so that the other Ovi services may later on utilize the same friend list. We recommend filling in the first name and last name fields due to this in to your profile.
Oh, while at it, we put out an updated version of S40 and S60 3rd Edition clients too earlier this week. Thanks for your comments and feedback, we've really enjoyed reading them and have registered every single one of them, even if we haven't been able to fullfill all the needs. We encourage you to continue giving feedback and published a new survey. Go ahead and fill it, it won’t take too long time!
Best Regards,
-Kristian

It would be nice if the OVI Contact download page would actually recognise the N97 to allow me to download and try it out?

Hey,
@Jamaal, @charliebrown: Sorry to hear about these problems.. iit seems that thorugh some Wap access points we're not able to recognize the device right. We'll try to arrange a PC download soon for those who struggle with the mobile download page.
-Kristian
If it can help, I'm not on WAP, I'm using the normal packet data connection...
Anyway, you should always give us beta maniacs the PC downloadable files, to have them always ready when installing/uninstalling/format ting/upgrading our phones! ;-))
Thanks,
charliebrown

Hi, I've just found out that, with Ovi Contacts installed, I cannot access SIM Cards contacts anymore ("Not enough memory or memory archive not available").
Nokia N97, FW 11.
I have tried using a WLAN and 3G connections both and i am still unable to download this.
Found the PC download, will try to use it.
and still not integrated with contacts properly.
hello i really like the application, sorry but my english is not so perfect, one of the things i dont like is that application close anytime and i loss my conversation even if i dont see it yet. other thing is when i have in my contact someone who is signed in the blackberry's gtalk application the contact appear for me offline but for them i appear online, so i never know if they are on line =/. thank a lot and i like very much this page and the application you do. great job.
hi guyz i really enjoyed this application the most. it's like a new serves never been introduced before ,, actually it's much more better than that blackberry serves. anyhow, i'm having some difficulties, when i try to change the picture or anything on ( My Profile ) ,, it suddenly close the page and bring me back to Ovi contacts ,, any idea how to solve this or , maybe an update .. My handset is N-79.
