Ovi Maps for Mobile graduates!
Thu, 2009-07-02 13:40Written by: Kee, Maps team
Hi all,
On behalf of the Maps team we are pleased to announce that Ovi Maps for mobile has now graduated from Beta Labs. It has been a long old journey since we first launched it to Beta Labs back in December last year and we now feel that the product is finally ready for the public.
“Lessons learnt” – we would like to take this opportunity to mention a couple of the key learnings for us all within the Maps team – the management of the discussion forum and communication. Within Beta Labs, the Ovi Maps for mobile page was clearly the most active and we were completely overwhelmed with the number of discussion threads. For the future, we already have some good ideas to improve the structure of the forums so that there are clear sections/areas in order to avoid duplications – in turn, this will hopefully improve the communication between yourselves and the Maps team.
As mentioned in the last posting, we do welcome your suggestions to improve Ovi Maps for mobile and even if it hasn’t been included into this final release, we will collate it and take it into account for the future releases.
We thank you all for your contributions over the last 7 months or so – this has really made a real difference to the development team in improving the application.
We hope that Ovi Maps for mobile will make a difference to your daily life and we look forward to working together on the next Beta release!
Please download the latest Maps Updater and Map Loader from www.nokia.com/maps
Thanks,
Kee and the Maps Team

No Mac support yet, what a surprise, you've only had seven months to sort it out.
Having said that there is barely enough internal memory on an N97 to install it anyway
I'd just be happy with an N97 iSync plugin for now....please :-)
Hope I actually get the City Explorer licence back on my N97 and the safety cameras display in the final non beta version.

Hey, i can't update to Maps 3.0 on my N82 because i get the message "component is built-in". Hmm, where have i seen this before? Oh yes! In all the previous betas!!
I have this thing called Nokia N82 Multimedia Computer. Is it possible to update Maps directly into it or do I need a PC? Is the installation file available somewhere?
After upgrading to this last version, I don't have anymore items in the installed applications list... What happened?
Nevermind: after I made a backup on the memory card the list appeared again... the mysteries of Symbian... :-/
It happened to me and I see the same reports from a few other 5800 users. The graduated software installs fine on the computer and then fine on the phone, but when it tries to update the maps on the phone, the PC software crashes. After a restart, try again and the PC Software just keeps crashing once it detects the 5800 phone.

I had that issue on my 6210 Nav but I managed to install 3.0 beta by following Kee's instructions.
Congratulations with this graduate!
The application works fine and the webpages are nice and informative.

Where did my reply go from yesterday.? Nokia Maps Updater updated to v1.07, but crashes when searching for connected device. There are several reports of this happening now, all from Windows Vista to Win7

If i try using Maps Update 1.0.7 it always says: Cannot get enough information about the phone [1]. I have an N95 1 (RM159) with newest SW. Whats that? The latest beta works fine.
Thanks fwon2638! While a hard reset might be a good solution to install a beta, it's a very nasty workaround for a final.
Where can I get the Nokia Maps 3.0 SIS for the E51?
Hello Nokia Maps Team!
First: Thank you for Ovi Maps 3.0 - it is better and faster than 2.0! ;-)
I
Installed on my XP system fine.
I connect my 5800 in PC Suite mode and start Nokia Maps Updated.
It finds my cable connected 5800 and then crashes out with the following "Nokia Maps Updater Application has encountered a problem and needs to close"
That is as far as it gets every time. I have removed it, rebooted the system and reinstalled Nokia Maps Updated.but I cannot get it to work.
It seems like a few people are seeing this issue now.
Advice?
Veneman,
Unfortunately, doing a hard reset is the only way for us (having the component built in issue) to install maps 3 at the moment (yes the process can be painful). If you can wait, a later firmware update may come with map 3.0.
I installed it on my nokia 5800 with all the maps from europe. Suddenly some parts of maps are just deleted without any reason... i am tired of you nokia...
Still: any plans about new firmware for N82 or working updater?
Hard reset etc. is probably taking longer than switch to Jesusphone :-(
After spending many hours without final succes on both the beta OM3 editions I gave up and returned to NM2. But then OM3 appeared. After updating the Maps Updater from 1.06 to 1.07 -> 1.08 the whole installation procedure went smoothly.
No need for the cities and qf issue, formatting the memory card or do a harware reset.
After a rough check I of OM3 I started the OVI plugin feature for 3D, night screen etc. well to my disappointment my PC at last, wasn't able to install it!
Happy Meal
more at ease now
Battery is a weak point.
GPS is slow.
Thank you for OM3! Upgrading from beta went smoothly and so far it has worked without a glitch.
Some comments though:
- navigation always starts in 3D mode. I am so used to paper maps that prefer 2D view. OM3 should start in the same mode in which it was last time used
- the manual still doesn't really explain what optimised routing means (instead of fastest or shortest)
- the manual doesn't list the buttons that are available when you are navigating. Of course many of them are self evident, but so far I have not been able to find out what reroute should be doing

I have a N95-3 s60 v3rd FP1 phone and have recently updated to Map 3.0 from 2.0. I have a voice navigation guidance license fee that was ported over from 2.0 so I was glad that transferred over. The problem I get is that when I set the route from one location to another location it will calculate it but yet when I start to drive giving off a few commands to follow all of a sudden my phone reboots itself. I have tried this various times and each time the same problem happens. Now is this a flaw with Maps 3.0 with my N95-3 s60 V3rd FP1 phone? I would suggest Maps 3.0 be updated to fix this problem or that there needs to be a new FW updated for the N95-3 becuase I did pay for that license fee and if I am not mistaken I would not be bale to revert back to 2.0 from 3.0 right?
Have gone through the process of installing OM3 but end up reverting to M2 (yet again). There are so many variations of Maps, loaders and updaters my head is spinning (let alone the programmers). Can we have a straight forward method of upgrading using the all embracing pc suite (pc> xp, sp3, IE8) If it is going to take a firmware update on an FP1 phone before we can use M3 or OM3 can you tell us? That would be good. Thanks
Like in the last Beta, the Maps application crashes when searching for addresses. Was very happy with the new pricing that I subscribed to a year license for drive&walk and traffic info but now I had to take my old gps again to navigate... Very unusefull!!
I am having the same problem as trogie on my N95 8GB. In the middle of my installation of Maps 3.0, there was a message on the phone saying that there wasn't enough memory to complete the installation. But then, it somehow did finish installing, and seems to shows the correct version (3.01 09wk26 b02) when I look in "About". Is it possible that the installation is somehow not complete? Is there a way to attempt a reinstall? The installer says that I already have the latest version, so there is nothing to do. I can't seem to be able to uninstall it so as to try again.
