Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 Beta updated and now, you can install applications into device

Written by Samuli Ylinen, Nokia Ovi Suite team

Hi all. Today is good time to open Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 Beta, if you have that already installed. You will get new Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 Beta package and can start using that. If you don’t have an old Beta installed, just download our latest build from the download page.

Our team is following the Beta Labs discussion very closely, quality engineers analyzing error reports, trying to follow through error cases and asking more information about errors, if needed. Please update your error reports: if somebody asks for more information, try to give that. Now, try again with updated Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 Beta and check if your error is fixed and report that back. Product managers follow feedback and suggestions and try to drive those to implementation or future releases of Nokia Ovi Suite. Your feedback counts and here are a couple of examples:

  • You asked support for application installation and that’s now working. Try double clicking your device application (.jar, .sisx) in PC and you should get your apps easily into device. This works great also, when downloading apps from web.
  • In performance side, we’ve done lots of work related to memory consumption and trying to optimize load times. We hope to hear your feedback, please write your comments in this discussion thread
  • We hope to hear also your comments about photos and music sync, lots of error fixes have been made and also performance should better compared to older Beta, you can comment that in this discussion thread

Any news on the possibility of operation from System Tray

Any news on the possibility of operation from System Tray like N Series Suite and PC Suite. I often prefer to keep the Suite in the System Tray and open onto the desktop when required.

List of feature overlap/difference with PC Suite

I like PC Suite very much because of some features: typing and sending SMS messages, updating contact list etc.

Since the installation of OVI Suite deinstalls PC Suite, I first want to be sure to get some needed features available in OVI Suite.
Is there a list available of the overlap/difference in features of both programs?

Best regards,
Martain Spierings

List of feature overlap/difference with PC Suite

mspierings: Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 doesn't uninstall Nokia PC Suite. It uninstalls older Nokia Ovi Suite releases, but not PC Suite. Those two can coexist on the same machine.

Are you going to add Lotus Notes Sync Support to this App?

Please let me know if you will add support for syncing with Lotus Notes. PC Suite has it but so far Ovi Suite does not.

Ovi Suite can't see there's a new update

Installed OVI Suite on laptop

@KapteeniKuukuna

Thx for replying.
You are right; PC Suite and OVI Suite can reside on PC together, but not be used at the same time which is obvious.
Will download and install OVI Suite soon.

@KapteeniKuukuna
Yesterday evening, I installed OVI Suite on my laptop. It looks great! The layout is beautifil.
All features I need are there. Tried a lot of them already.
I definitely the 'conversation' diplay of messages.
Have to try the feature 'Connectiing to the Internet' still. That didn't work rightaway. Perhaps because of the presence of PC Suite.
I will remove PC Suite soon.

Martain

Unsure about installation

Before I try to install. Can someone tell me whether they have
-implemented the calender?
-is Lifeblog / Photos ~ timeline with sms, mms, photos etc. etc. working and importing correctly?
-still a memoryhog ?

Cheers, and thanks in advance
Lars

when syncing it jumps to 221,000k Still at the top of my list of processes. right above firefox.

Contacts seem to sync ok. No problems noticed yet.

To Ayman

Can you please describe in detailed steps how you're able to reproduce the problem. Ie. are you trying to upgrade firmware or Ovi Suite? How did you start installation, from tools menu, updates icon or home notification? Also in case of you firmware update problem, I'd need your device model, IMEI (so I can check from logs) and logs under
- XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A\Logs\
- Vista: C:\ProgramData\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A\Logs

What is your OS? Can you also copy-paste your system information under Help > About Nokia Ovi Suite > System information

Thanks

Is it possible to sync with ovi contacts

Is it possible to use ovi suite to sync with ovi contacts?

THANK YOU for the update...

I will test it now. I appreciate Nokia's constant work on this.

Calendar

Where is the Calendar app in Nokia OVI Suite, just like Nokia PC Suite? I don

Calendar support

Hi erkdiniz - for the current Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 release, best way to sync calendar is to sync with Microsoft Outlook or Windows Calendar in Windows Vista.Having calendar view in Nokia Ovi Suite is topic, for which we have received lots of requests. We're looking into that.-- Samuli

Lotus Notes support

Hi spanishgringo, at the moment we aren't planning to support Lotus Notes in Nokia Ovi Suite. Have you tried Lotus Notes Traveler: http://blogs.zdnet.com/cell-phones/?p=291That should support for example contacts, calendar, email and to-do list sync.-- Samuli

System tray operations?

Hi mbrett, we support already running Nokia Ovi Suite in system tray and you can open Nokia Ovi Suite UI from system tray, when you need to do something. Or is there something, which you would like to do from system tray specifically?-- Samuli

Lotus Notes Traveler Not a Solution

@saylinen
The Traveler application is not at all a solution for PC Suite users.
1) Requires new server software. I sync locally and not via Domino
2) Works only on the newer versions of Notes/Domino
3) It looks like it costs additional money to install it.

Since you have local Lotus syncing built into PC Suite, you should build it back into Ovi Suite. Otherwise, you are locking out us Lotus users who do not have an IT team bending over backwards to give Nokia support (read - almost all of us).

Application Installer

Where is the Application Installer?

Application Installer is included in the 0.4.122.0

Hi marcorsx

Application installer is included in the 0.4.122.0. You can start installation either by double click, right click and open with or drag and drop sis, sisx, jar or wgz to Ovi Suite 2.0

Ovi Calendar needed (and sync with Google Calendar/ Contacts)

1st - Calendar is needed
2nd - The OVI Team needs to support interoperability and syncing between Google Calendar (and to a lesser extent Google Contacts). If you want to make your service very appealing make it easy for them to transition all of their data from Google Calendar to Ovi calendar. And there are many users and uses of Google Calendar (and contacts) that will make users want to keep using those services. You have a much better chance of success of you make OVI more open and better connected to other services. Other Idea - Look at connecting Ovi IDs and Passwords with Facebook Connect. Facebook seems to be a strategic partner (eg, lifecasting, etc...). Why not integrate with their other services?
