Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 for S60 updated
Thu, 2009-09-17 09:29
The Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 for S60 has been updated! There are several smaller bug corrections, but the most significant fix is the change to the conversion functionality. This should prevent situations where the device’s C- drive will get full.
Fixed in this update:
- Conversion will avoid situations where disk space might go below critical level
- MIDlets are converted to internal mass storage if possible
- MIDlet with large RMS can be started
- MIDlets can access memory card root folder
- Support all Nokia specific JAD attributes
Minor changes:
- Updates to eSWT widgets
- Minor changes to bluetooth
- Reduced the amount of debug logging, which should give minor performance improvement
Know issues:
- Phone may become slow or unresponsive if it runs out of disk space on C-drive.
Please ensure that C-drive will have at least 10MB of free disk space before installation. - SSL connection does not work in all phones
Nokia 5800 firmware version needs to be at least V21.0.017 - Backup and restore does not work for MIDlets on memory card
- Nokia specific globalindicators extension API is not supported
- Please re-boot your device after installing the new version of JRT

Comments:
Before installing: How much of my C: drive soes it now need?
Having a bit of a mare with Nokia Messaging eating away at my C: drive on my N97, and noticed the 10MB limit you are after. Is this due to the app needing 5MB and double that during install?
Don't want to risk other issues 'till I know how much more of my C: drive i will loose if all is well.

N97
I will be a crash test dummy, and go for it on my N97. Will report back my findings.
Will make notes of memory prior to install, and memory left after install, which other members may appreciate.
Just noticed, this has not yet been tested with V12 on the N97. Will be back shortly to let you know how I get on.
update
Ok, prior to installation I had 32.7MB available on C:
After installation, and reboot, I now have 26.4MB on C:
6.3MB lost on C:
Running V12 N97
JEALOUS!!!!! - Still stuck on v11 - Drasted UK N97
Thanks Micky,
Now just need to check if it's worth the memory loss as starting with c.23MB and reducing (Using Nokia Messaging, OVI Maps 3.03 and N-Gage).
Loved N-gage on my old N95 8GB, but the memeory loss and poor touch implementation if you can call it that depresses me. May have to go. Annoying as took an age to pursuade Nokia Care that N-Gage for N97 even existed and to transfer licences. Partially wish I 'd just left them on my old N95 8GB as my wife uses that now.
Sorry rambled a little. Getting old and all that.
BTW: Is it still moving icons, post install?

Yes, it's still moving icons post install.
I'm afraid this is going to be the case with the final product also if I have understood plans correctly.
Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 for S60
I want to cancell/ to take off Java Runtime from my N97. How should I do it ?
I think, it takes too much memoryspace now.
Is this Java coming to Ovi in the future, to be downloaded?
Kills C:\ Drive
I'd love to use this, but with N97, it's impossible because it will eat up my C drive. :(

cant install java apps on nokia 5800
after installing this update, i can no longer install any java apps, I had a few games that i can install with the previous version of java runtime but after i install this and try to install any .jar file, i usually get an error : storage exception
the converted java applications such as java or other games simply disappear from menu and the uninstall menu, although when I uninstall the java runtime 2 beta, they reappear and work fine
anyone else having this problem ?
Memory Hog
First I recommend backup the phone to the memory card, backup onto PC Suite, and then resetting your phone before you attempt installing this. Installing this over existing apps may make them run awkwardly. Once you have installed the new Java Runtime, then reinstall your other apps.
Secondly, while knowing they only provided 80MB of phone memory for the 5800, Nokia should go to great lengths to find ways to better manage this precious and limited resource! Using 10MB off the top for the new Runtime is huge! I understand apps like Java and Flashplayer are crucial but other embedded apps are not. For example, simple fix would be to allow the user to delete the games, Facebook, and Myspace apps which come with the phone. This would help add memory.
