Nokia Sports Tracker archived from Beta Labs; service remains up and running

Written by John Markow, Community Facilitator, Nokia Beta Labs

Hi all,

As you know, Sports Tracker was one of the first apps published at Beta Labs. It began as an experimental research prototype for sportsmen and women to collect and share their training activity and routes.

As part of some end-of-year gardening in the Beta Labs site, we've changed the status of Nokia Sports Tracker in our portfolio to "archived" since, from a research perspective, this beta has run its course.

However, the Sports Tracker service remains up and running for you to use and enjoy as you have been.

On behalf of everyone, thanks for your support and contributions over the years.

- John

At least in the UK. Isn't that a bit strange to sell something with out support for the software?

Are there any news for the future of this? I love my N79 Active and it seems to be a popular service, but it always lacked a bit of development.

You need to remember the news a few months ago about the splitting of Sports Tracker form Nokia as such as the product was to be handed to the two main developers of the product to form part of their new company Sports Tracking Technologies. The plan was that this would occur towards the end of this year making 2010 the year of Sports Tracking Technologies rather than Nokia Sports Tracker.

It hs not been made at all clear as to what the time frame looks like for the conversion/transfer of users, if this will occur, but the end result sounded like we will end up with a Sports Tracker product provided by Sports Tracking Technologies

not only the 5800 is less powerful hardware and has very little memory when compared to the n95... it also runs an OS for which there is neither SportsTracker, nor StepsCounter nor Wellness Diary... and instead of porting n-gage to the 5800xm nokia is closing n-gage in favor of the ovi store which is barely usable from the n95....

please say it's april 1.... (or december 28)....

farewell, SportsTracker, many ppl is missing you already.

Though we knew that Sports Tracker will be moving in different direction, I am still confused about its future , especially cost structure. It's fantastic app-service combination. Best of all till date.
I really wondered why they didn't promote it well.

Also since Nokia viNe also seems to have gone down, will we have any similar app-service in future?

BTW viNe was never part of Betalabs.

I know that Sports Tracker is in the process of being spun into a separate company but how does this affect the current users?

Will this new company be a Nokia company, will there be continued if not accelerated development on a Sports Tracker-type product from this new company?

Personally I want to see this coming to Maemo as it will be my next phone choice.

I am in no way linked to Nokia or Sports Tracker and am just a user of both.

Q1 - I know that Sports Tracker is in the process of being spun into a separate company but how does this affect the current users?
A1 - Nothing being said with regard to the physiscal transition, possibly due to legal reasons, but they are saying that they are working hard.

Q2 - Will this new company be a Nokia company, will there be continued if not accelerated development on a Sports Tracker-type product from this new company?
A2 - My understanding is that it will be a separate, non Nokia, company and as I said before thay are working hard on development and we will no more when the organisational transition is complete.

Given the popularity of this beta, we'll do our best to pass along any news we receive about Sports Tracker here too, even though the page has been archived. As said, the service and clients remain up and running for you to use and enjoy.

@markow76, any news about Nokia viNe? any plans to develop and bring it to Betalabs?

Suyog

@suyog,

I'll interpret your question as a proposal, so I've passed that along to those who have been involved with it for their consideration.

@John, Great to hear that. I always like Nokia viNe look and feel. Application has good potential.
I have mapped/shares many journeys with friends. Many of my friends can't believe this capability to map travel with GPS and tag photos, videos , music as you go, really fantastic idea.

@Suyog: It was a sad day when Friend View closed it's doors too

??? You don't know at all what you are talking about. Nokia SportsTracker does support Nokia 5800 XPressMusic which runs S60 5th edition. I'm using SportsTracker almost daily on my 5800XM and it works wery well.

And about the memory. Nokia 5800 XPressMusic has 128MB RAM, Nokia N95 has 64MB of RAM. So how can you claim that 5800XM has less memory than N95?

@ markow76

I want Nokia viNe too, on my N97. Please forward that viNe doesn't had such a big success since its mentioned nowhere but for not being mentioned anywhere it had great success!

Its somehow curious that an Nseries application doesn't run on a Nseries device.

I hope this goes back into active dev soon. I've got a handful of features that would make it much more user friendly for frequent users.

eg.
disable the media search prompt after upload
vibration alert when gps lock acquired (this would be a HUGE help)
automatic upload on completion
shortcut to start workout

that's off the top of my head..
If it were open source I would add them myself.

Was my favourite App on the E71, now seems not to work on E72. Big disappointment. As an App would have huge adverstising potential with pre-qualified demographics for cyclists, runners etc etc

I also used the Sportstracker a lot on my N82. Now I also have a E72. Tracking works fine, but reviewing afterwards crashes the application.
I hope the SPortstracker becomes an (commercial) application for the E72.

The best application ever made! I love it! Thank you so much for keeping the service up and running!
