Mobile Web Server beta archived

Written by Jorma Hekkanen, Senior Manager, Mobile Web Server

After over two and a half years in beta, Mobile Web Server is now being archived from Nokia Beta Labs.  We’re sorry it has to be this way, but as an experimental prototype, there’s no guarantee that it will last forever. Future plans are still open so we can’t say yet how this activity will evolve further, but as a team we are strong believers that this kind of concept will become a trend some day.

For those using mymobilesite.net, the service and related support will be discontinued by the end of January 2010.  We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.  When the service is stopped you won’t be able to reach your mobile from the Internet with a familiar web address anymore.  However, your Mobile Web Server device software remains as it is and stays available for usage in local mode. The data that you have created remains on your device and it will not be lost even when the service ends.

We would like to thank everyone that used, tuned, and helped develop Mobile Web Server and mymobilesite.net. It has been great pleasure to work with you in such a revolutionary concept.

Thanks for the Empowerment

I know that I've blogged and wrote this in the forum, but it stands to be said here as well: thanks for the empowerment this piece of software has offered me.

Ironically enough, the last week that the MWS service will be up is also the week that I'm hosting the Carnival of the Mobilists. It will be a fitting curtain call to the MWS service.

I'd like to thank Nokia's team of researchers and developers who built the MWS. This is probably the most empowering and innovative piece of mobile software that I've used on a mobile to date. And really, using this has completely changed my perception about how to do mobile. I wish that team the best of success with wherever the lessons of the MWS takes them, and hope that my not-so-developer-centric use was able to give them opportunities for more depth of content for their research.

PS: Still drinking out of the MWS mug that was a gift from your team to me. It was in my hands a few minutes ago when I realized it.

Thank You !

It has been a real pleasure to get our ideas to our team and seeing another way of doing things does exist.
When I think that, You as a great fan of MWS, are offering such a final curtain show for our beta I feel once again wery gratefull behave of our Beta.

Hope all good for your every days learning journey

Is there any reason why you

Is there any reason why you couldn't turn this software over to the Symbian Foundation?

Giving to the Foundation???

Giving the project to the Symbian Fonudation is indeed a great idea for further devleopment, but its already an open source project, and so that aspect wouldn't change much.

The service itself - that is the gateway and mymobilesite.net as a destination - is something that would take some level of capital to keep going. It would be great if the Foundation were able to take this on, but serving as a gateway is probably something that's not as bountiful of an endeavor at this point.

Then again, we could make the radical suggestion that the Foundation ditches the idea of a desktop PIM and uses the MWS just for that, hosting the gateway for those who'd not have a URL of their own, and having a component that would enable one to create/maintain a gateway on their device for those who'd essentially do a one time fee for this. That could work, but I'm guessing that Nokia has already been thinking similar as the Ovi Services end seems as if its indeed going down this road.

EDIT/ADD: I did post an idea about using the Mobile Web Server over at ideas.symbian some time ago and this route would be a suitable means for the Foundation to take up on the work that's already been done by Nokia and others for this product: http://ideas.symbian.org/Idea/View?ideaid=3999

Sad news

It is really sad news that Mobile Web Server will close soon...

Dear MWS-Devs @ NOKIA, -

Dear MWS-Devs @ NOKIA,

- Thanks to the dev of MWS and mymobilesite.net for your innovations & efforts !

- Running Apache+ (almost the complete LAMP-Stack) on a phone-device opened quite some aspects to my, which I never thought of; (because or despite the fact that I started doing similar on a PSION ;-)

- Mediated (http://mymobilesite.net/) Remote-Access however was another other eye-opener, which I'd like to thank you for!

Now that you close down further developement of AWS A N D the mediary http://mymobilesite.net/
I'd like to suggest that
- you (devs) and
- you (managers)
do yourself and your company a huge favor by OpenSourcing the Code of Both.

Why? Simple:
- Sharing your aggregated knowlege and code, will reward you and your Company later on.
- Closing down operations and throwing away the code and gathered knowledge definitely wont do any of the above.

thanks & looking forward to see the code of BOTH apps in the public domain,
regards georg

Hi, Hope this copy from user

Hi,
Hope this copy from user manual helps you.

Start Web Server
You can start the Web Server either by connecting to the internet, or locally without connecting to the Web Server gateway. If you connect to the internet, web users can browse to your mobile site. If you start the Web Server locally, web users cannot access your mobile site.
Web users cannot access any content on your mobile site until you grant them access rights. For more information, see “Grant access rights for users to web applications”.
Note: Keeping the Web Server running and allowing web users to access it causes data traffic to your mobile device through your service provider's network. Contact your service provider for information about data transmission charges.
To start the Web Server, select Options > Start server and from the following:
• If you have changed the default connection type setting to Always ask, select the connection type Internet or Local.
• If you are connecting to internet, select an internet access point.
• If you are connecting locally, to establish a network connection, select Yes and an internet access point.
To start the Web Server remotely, do the following:
1. Enable Remote start in Settings and choose the internet access point 14
USE THE WEB SERVER WITH YOUR MOBILE
DEVICE
2. Store your mobile phone number in Portal. Your mobile phone must have a SIM card for the remote start to work.
3. Using a computer web browser, go to Portal at http://mymobilesite.net, and log in with your Web Server account. On the Site info page, click Start button and the starting command will be sent to your device as a text message.
For more information, see “Define remote start”.
Through the WLAN connection, you can have private access without the Web Server gateway to your mobile site, for example, through computers in the same local area network.
When the Web Server starts, the connection status changes to Running or Running locally, depending on the selected connection type.
If you start the Web Server locally, to access your mobile site later, select Options > View in browser or enter the address http://127.0.0.1 in your device browser.
To view your Web Server address and Web Server version number, in the main view, select Options > Show information. When the Web Server is running and connected to the internet, the complete address of your mobile site is displayed. When the Web Server is running locally, your IP address is displayed. This screen also provides a link to the Web Server software download page.
