Ovi Maps for mobile and Ovi Lifecasting graduates from Nokia Beta Labs!

Hi all,

Firstly we sincerely thank you all for your contributions over the last few months. This has been really valuable to us in improving the product. Once again, we apologies for the quiet periods on the discussion forums and we will improve this in future releases.

Now to the news...on behalf of the Maps and Lifecasting teams, we are excited to announce that both Ovi Maps for mobile and Ovi Lifecasting have graduated from Nokia Beta Labs! Both of these applications were launched separately at Nokia World last year in Stuttgart, Germany and we are now delighted to say that you can now Share Location (a feature introduced as part of Ovi Lifecasting) directly from Ovi Maps for mobile. It's really easy to use and so much fun! In addition, this new release supports a number of other Nokia smartphones!

And now for some really big news….

Navigation on your Nokia. For Free. Forever. By Ovi Maps.

Yes, you heard it right – a new version of Ovi Maps with free walk and drive navigation is now available for compatible Nokia smartphones! This is big news, enabling Nokia smartphone users to navigate wherever they are in the world, as easily as if they were sending a text or taking a photo. It’s going to explode the use of mobile navigation around the world and change the concept of navigation as we know it.

Why have a mobile phone and a separate personal navigation device that only works in one region or country and stays in the car? Put the two together, make it free and global, and you have a truly useful tool that can get you around almost any city in the world on foot or by car.

The official press release can be found from: http://www.nokia.com/press/press-releases/showpressrelease?newsid=1375569

We hope that Ovi Maps continues to make a difference to your daily life and we look forward to working with you all on the next release.

Please go ahead and download the latest release of Ovi Maps from nokia.com/maps

Other Ovi Maps video are available from Nokia Conversations

Many thanks and enjoy!

Happy and pained at the same time as an N97 Flagship owner. Reference has been made to N97 support on it's way, but no timeframe.

Great... I just bought a year license.

It's simply unbelievable that you guys launch this with no support for N97.
Not only we're plagued with problem from the start and now this.
First time I feel that I have been cheated by Nokia. I truly regret buying this phone.

@pinhead: The runours are now that the new version of OVI Maps will be embedded in the v21 FW update as it needs c.9MB of C: drive if downloaded separately. Just have to wait for v21 FW to release for your N97.

Agreed with all the comments thus far, leaving out the N97 is the dumbest move Nokia could make. Its the one handset which is causing it consumer grief and predominately owned by influencer and decision maker consumers. You just gave more of your customers a reason to defect to Android.

@mbrett: rumours are nice, but there's still no firm date for the v21 release. Seeing how long it took for v20 to come out, could be waiting what seems an age - and just re-enforces the point that N97 customers are having that pineapple shoved further and further up that uncomfortable place.

i am so disappointed, seems like buying n97 was a total waiste of time

All the N97 owners, let´s wait till 28th January. As of that day the new Ovi Maps will be available also for N97, probably with the new FW2.1.

From:
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=n...

Maps 3.03 for the N97 is going to be available from the 28th Jan 2010 via the IAD (also kown as Software Update).
Users of the N97 are advised to update their firmware after release, which will then make the Ovi Maps 3.03 application available for download.

Sorry N97 users for the inconvenience and thanks josef.r for the post.

Fantastic news, downloading and installing right now!!! :)

And now I'm happy again.

Eagerly awaiting the N97 release on 28th Jan 2010

Am interested is ovi planing to add full Serbia maps soon?

Well, as E71 user I would say that I will newer buy Nokia phone again. Why? Each new firmware for this phone adding more and more bugs instead of fixing them or adding new functionality, like FP2. And now my E71 even is not supported by new maps application. Sorry, but I can't buy a new phone each half in year in order to be able to use latest software.

They did say these were just the first phone to receive the new version with free navigation and there were more to follow.

Whats about Nokia E71, coming up to the 28th? Has anybody this information?

Excellent news indeed. Thanks to the maps team ( Kee and team)

BTW, when will E71 be supported cos am a poor owner of it now.

I believe E71 will have more fans than E72 ;) and pls extend the support for E71 as well.

A sincere request to maps team

What a great present, these Ovi Maps. Free navigation is a dream coming true. Thanx Nokia!

"Sum Ergo Cogito"

Great news!
BTW, the guy in the video is like Kenneth caracter from 30Rock, dam funny.

Works great on 5800 XM! Thanks to Ovi Maps team for giving out total free license!

I am happy with this decision but Nokia please get your act right. plz plz plz release your software/services which can be compatible with more popular/stable devices like N95,E71,N82 rather than just latest and greatest.

I mean it just doesnt make any sense to ignore such a huge userbase.

Suyog

hi, why support for s60 v3.1 have been dropped? maps 3.01 used to work!

will the new Ovi Maps supports 5530?

Hello N97 users!

I've installed the 5800 version of new Maps in my N97 and its working very well!

Just installed Ovi Maps on a E52. Works great and is a huge improvement. Love Lonely Plant and Michlin guides! This is a killer app!! Thanks for the hard work and great results!

It's been nine months since i bought my E71 for 300 Euros; it would be really unfair not to support it with the free ovi maps. Please make E71 compatible with ovi maps 3.03!

Is it possible to have an official answer if it going to happen?
thanks

Why is there no N97 (not the mini) support in germany?

I installed the Ovio Maps on my 5800 and tested it and I still don't have voice navigation..other than that nice app..

I have brand new E71 - my Xmas present - and I can't see this device on the list as supported. Frankly, if I have to pay for guided GPS a yearly fee to Nokia, I rather renew my TomTom license. It has a much better user interface and a bigger screen.

umm.. iam in new zealand and i updated 2 ovi map 3.03..i gt a problem nw...everything seems 2 be working fine but theres no gps signal..the map says waiting 4 gps signal and nothing happens..i waited 4 1 hour..i still no signal..kept it like dt 4 2 hours bt all it says is waiting 4 gps signal..can someone help me..or realease a fix 4 dz??..pliz..wud really appreciate it..

i have nokia 5800 XM blue btw..hehe

Hi...

will this new free OVI maps be availbale for INDONESIA purchased Mobile ?? (as it says only 78 countries will get it)

PLS REPLY.. IF ANYONE KNOWS

Installed the latest Maps and Navigation on my 5800 (in India) and its working great. Voice navigation, routing, re-routing etc are working as expected and I have no serious complaints so far..

The only issue that I am trying to figure out is how to install the new maps on E: drive instead of C: drive.

The way it is now, when I install the maps_installer_3.03_... to my device, it automatically goes to C: drive and takes up a huge amount of memory. Post installation, there are two apps in the AppManager - one is Nokia Maps (9Mb) and the other is Ovi maps (7Mb). I'd like to be able to install both these on to E drive so there is more available memory on C:

Does anyone know of a workaround or some other way to do this ? I also tried downloading and installing via the Ovi store where I have set the default location for installing apps to E: drive. However, Ovi store also ended up installing it in the C: drive.

Any suggestions or thoughts welcome....

Thanks in advance.

Could someone please clarify the issue with now unsupported phones quickly, before this gets out of hands.

Is there a plan to release a new version for N95 8GB? How about the new S40 version of Maps in 3710 fold, which is a brand new model?

Will there ever be a free navigation for all GPS models or will this be a selected set of phones for ever?

installed om my N97, works fine but uses 16 mb of phone memory (C)

Hi, great job from Nokia, thank you.
I'm using N97 mini and new maps version works just fine, however I don't get the voice navigation instrutions when my phone is connected to my bluetooth module.
It would be great if I get the navigation voice, ate least through the phone.
In order to get the voice navigation I need disconnect my phone from bluetooth module (with this I loose phone bluettoh capability).
Maybe in a new version Nokia can solve this issue.
Thank you

It works just fine on the N97... all u need to do is make sure u have atleast 20 to 25 mb free space on your C: drive..... :)

N97 Users - In order to update to the latest version of Maps, please do the following:

1) Check that you have the latest Firmware (*#0000#). The latest release is v20.0.019. If you do not have this version, please update using Nokia Software Updater http://www.nokia.co.uk/support/download-software/device-software-update - Remember to use PC Suite to backup any necessary files.

2) Once you have this firmware, you can go to Software Update on your device and the new version will appear for download. You should also be prompted as you open the Maps application on your device (online connection required)

I have 55mb left of memory and I have a 5800 with 8gb storage why did'nt nokia add a option to install to card instead. Bad thing is that I cannot boot the phone without taking out the card. Is there any ideas to stop the phone stalling upon boot up?

Tx to Nokia, that release free licence for navigation !

I have problem on me N5800XM: I can not edit (delete,rename...) the routes in my fauorite...
I can edit the places , but the routes not. If I touch the rout, I do not get the edit menu. The navi immidiately calculate the rout and switch to map.
It is aplication mistake, or . . . ?

Thanks for this release
By the way, do you plan to improve the Ovi Lifecasting ? Today we can only share my position.
I would like to share a future position. For example, If I plan a rendez-vous in some restaurant tomorrow, I would like to share restaurant position asap and not waiting to be in the restaurant to share the position and the exact location of my scheduled rendez-vous :)

So a good improvement is to add "share on Facebook" at the same position that "share with Ovi" on POI menu.

Another idea will be to send the info in a Facebook message (Inbox) and not on the wall (or at least publish on the wall privately) thus all my friends won't know that I have a rendez-vous with my family tomorrow ;)

I just installled ovi maps 3.03 on my 5800XM and it works!. My old maps data is still there and can be use. No error pop-ups . No need to uninstall the old version. I'm downloading from Application Updater on the phone. And i've upgraded my firmware. The landmarks is awesome....it's shown. Even in the middle city like Surabaya, well, maybe need more landmarks...but it's nice enough. The voice guidance is nice too, i'v been downloading the indonesian voice for drive and english -with street name- voice for walk. And it all works....!
Minor: i can't found the michelin guide, replace by HungryGoW....
Thanks to Ovi...., The world never been better like now.....
Ovi Maps. Worldwide. Forever.

@sumeetp i had the same problem as u have n i've got a 5800xm as well. but i fixed this issue now. all u gotta do is goto ur phone's language n select automatic. then reset ur phone to its factory settings. after ur phone restarts open ur maps n it shud b alrite....jus try it out. it worked for me! (though i reset the phone a couple of times)

Great news to know that Ovi maps has been liberated. however, i find iy very odd to know that phones like n97, n 86 have not been supported. also when are we covering the maps for rest of India

I tried to post before, but seem to have failed. I wanted to ask, when will you have support for the N96? My yearly licence is about to expire (feb 14), so I'd like to know if I still need to buy another.
Thanks.

umm.. iam in Morocco-Melilla and i updated 2 ovi map 3.03..i gt a problem nw...everything seems 2 be working fine but theres no gps signal..the map says waiting 4 gps signal and nothing happens..i waited 4 1 hour..i still no signal..kept it like dt 4 2 hours bt all it says is waiting 4 gps signal..can someone help me..or realease a fix 4 dz??..pliz..wud really appreciate it..

I have ovi maps on my e63, i would like to use ovi maps to show on facebook my position (or near enough), ive seen this done
Im told that nokia e63 does not have gps, but when i use google-lattitude it gets my location bang on!
Even if i want to show location via ovi maps (highlight area on map) can i do this, at the moment my ovi maps does not give me options to upload/share etc

Thanks in advance

Lee

It's such a shame that many Nokia compatible phone owners cannot get this
such as UK 5800 provided by T-mobile Orange and 3
as the provider will not allow update of the phone software to a version that will allow installtion of Ovi maps :-(
why not just give us a free license for Nokia maps!

And today I got a message from ovi marketing telling me to download the free navigation version of maps. Unfortunately, they seem to completely ignore the data they have on me, in particular that I have a N96 and a 6600 slide, both of which left out of the free navigation offer.

where is the link to download the software????

5800 RM356
Dubai, Middle East

I must say, the new voice guided navigation is simply superb. But it takes at least two to three minutes even in open space for the in-built GPS to lock on a signal. After that, it's a simple show stealer. I use it in public transport buses and in my car when I've got my friends with me...simply a stunning show-off application. I can literally see them turn green with jealousy!

Now apart from the gushing stream of praise, why is it that in the same country, different cities have different GPS signals? Is it my device's fault or something I've got to live with?

And how come there's no map for Pakistan? I mean...when you folks at Nokia can come up with maps for far flung countries like Albania and Chile, surely Pakistan should be a piece of cake?

I regularly check the Maps application to see whether there's a download available for Pakistan.

Speaking of the Maps application, why doesn't it function if my phone isn't connected? Doesn't make sense.

P.S.
I read a lot about changing my server address from supl.nokia.com to supl.google.com to make the GPS signals stronger and faster. Is it true?

And why can't I use HTML codes?

great app, but it sucks the speedlimit warning is only available on major roads while garmin that uses navteq mapdata as well has them for almost every street in germany.
would be nice if speedlimits are added on all roads and not just on the major ones =)

I am using OVI Maps on my 5530 XpressMusic with some success. I think is a great idea to combine everything on one device especially when it is at no cost.

Recently I have tried to download Favorite locations in Paris, France but I repeatedly get an error message saying something like 'sorry this is not available st this time'. I tend to work on the maps at approximately the same time range nightly .. about 7:30 am Helsinki time.

Does anyone know if this error message is due to scheduled map maintenance at a Nokia facility? Is there a clitch in the program re: marking favorite locations?

Is there a roadmap, or at least a rough estimate, of when the "free navigation" version will be released for different models?

Still nothing for E71. C'mon Nokia, the device is still being sold but left out of the loop. This is forcing people who don't want to get a 5800 to buy E72, which is a couple hundreds more than E71, or a N97. Is this deliberate from Nokia? I hope not as I thought Nokia has always been a more ethical company compared to the others.

I was told when calling the Nokia Support Centre here in Sydney that the E71 would be supported but no date was set.

Could someone from Nokia please confirm in writing here that the E71 WILL be supported and provide an estimated date?

As a business owner and E71 user, I appreciate Nokia's general direction but better communication with existing customers may be a wise idea to prevent churn. Nokia must be keenly aware of the many viable alternatives which are available when you need to renew a contract.

Thanks in advance.
