Introducing Nokia Custom Dictionary for predictive text

Written by Sethu Pillai, Nokia Custom Dictionary team

We are pleased to publish Nokia Custom Dictionary on Beta Labs to share with the community and gather feedback. We designed this experimental application to address the wish that many S60 users have had: to be able to edit the list of words used by the phone for text prediction and transfer it between phones.

Nokia Custom Dictionary does exactly that, and we’ve also given you the chance to import words from a text file.  This means you can quickly “teach” your phone commonly used words or even create specific word lists to be shared among a like-minded community, for example in the medical domain.

As with any beta launch, the application is not yet perfect. There are some known incompatibilities with some of the older S60 3rd edition devices. There might also be the odd functional or usability issue. We hope that with our enthusiastic Beta Labs community, we can uncover these teething problems together.

Please download the application (requires login) and share your feedback with us. We are eager to know if you find this application useful and how we can improve it further. Thanks in advance.

Download whent good, install no problem.
App works fine but not all functions available on my N95.

Can the tool be used to add a new input language that is not yet officially supported? This would be interested for minority languages where open source word lists are available.

Downloaded. and it gave software not compatible while installing. Proceeded. It does not autocomplete the word present in the dictionary on my 5800.

Does not autocomplete any words on my 5800 either??

very good idea and app. loving it. keep it up beta labs !!!

Best Regards,
Suyog

installed in my 5639xm, no complaint from the phone. But cannot add new word.
One suggestion, can it be integrated with the existing t9 dictionary? That allows up to add new word on the go?
Thx we need this apps.

Installed to test on an N82, says it only supports adding words and backing up the list. I've filed a suggestion for adding the ability to delete words, seems sorely needed on all of these phones. I've got a word list full of junk suggestions that cannot be gotten rid of.

Thanks for the application, I'd say this functionality should have been in there already but it's good to finally see it.

Hi,

I downloaded and tried this app - works fine on my E63. It's a simple nice app and can be useful to remove those words from your dictionary that you used three or four time in a particular day but you ain't gonna use anymore.

Still, I find that this app could be complemented - or maybe totally replaced - by a better one: an autocorrect/autoreplace as you wright. That as gotta be the functionality I miss most from my old "windows mobile" smartphone. An app where you could preset alias - like, I could wright "btw" and the phone would automatically replace it with "by the way", or I could preset something like "@mail" and it would wright my email adress, and "@adress" would wright my full home adress.
That would be a really great app, and for me, as I type a lot of sms and emails on my E63, that would make a real difference.

Thank you for being all so innovative.

It looks a very good idea, some times i add customize words but i get wrong with some words and they will appear when i wrote some words, it's a good idea that with this app I can delete the words that I create by mistake. One bad thing is the feedback that i see about "not autocomplete the word" on 5800XM :\

One idea is, give the user the possibility to chose the word that came in first place. I use the PT dictionary but i will give a ex in EN dictionary.
Ex: I write 42779 = Happy
And the second word is Harry, it is possible for user to select with the combination of 42779 what word came first, If I use the word/name harry many times it will be better for me that the word Harry came first that Happy. It's just a example to explain what is my idea.

good idea..work fine on my N95..

Na Nokií N86 funguje.

where is the link to download the software????

Doesn't seem to be of much use. Nokia phones have an exceptional ability that once they ask you to spell a word, that word gets saved in the predictive text dictionary. Trust me, it does. And here's another little trick which works:

Type out a word using the normal alphanumeric keypad (i.e. to type k press 5 twice) and when you're done, switch to the predictive text mode (use the # key, it's much quicker) and select the word you just typed (use the left/right buttons on the screen/keypad) and hit space. And that's it! The word's now stored automatically in your dictionary.

I just thought this is very useful. and My phone model is left out. I feel Nokia developer is too bogged down with too many development and attempting too many stuffs at one time.

any chance to better that. I just wish when you said more model to come. it comes quicker..... thanks so much

I have download it but when Open it I get "certificate error contact the application supplier". Ive tried the moving the date set application to All. Download via other PC download via cell phone, nothing helps????

Please check this thread: http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-custom-dictionary/review/7605/gives...

It could be that your device software needs to be updated for this to work.

it seems it needs a file to import

Help please, it does not autocomplete the word present in the dictionary on my 5800. If someone can write to nicola.df@hotmail.it
Thanks very much.

Definitely useless on my N95 8GB as my main reason for installing it was *removing* words. Guess what? Feature not available for my phone! Great job.

Please make this app public. Despite of some little features like a popup-edit-menu its a great app!! So easy and fast to use.
I just installed it and after restart it worked like a charm. i just deleted 1/10 of my dictionary because of being faulty :)

Please release as is to the Nokia Store.
