Introducing Nokia Feel: explore what your device can do, based on how you feel

Written by Roope Tassberg, Nokia

Hi,

Don’t you hate when you have the new phone in your hands which you know is full of all kinds of capabilities and rich features, but those application names and icons are just not telling what they actually do?

We have come up with an idea that what if you tell the phone what you are feeling at the moment – you feel Energetic, Lucky, Lonely, Happy, Hungry, Bored, Lost, Caring or Creative… and then the phone suggest few things you could do with it? Not showing all the possibilities at once, but the things that relate what you are thinking of at the moment. To study the idea further we have developed small application, Nokia Feel, for you.

Try it and tell us how you feel, and we put your ideas in to good use.

All, when giving feedback for this project, try to evaluate not just the current implementation but also the underlying idea - and let us know how you think we should take this project forward.

As a big believer in the use case of "serendipitous discovery of cool stuff" (based on a powerful recommendation engine and lots of data) I have a few ideas myself too.

Let's be creative :)

Would this app suggest another programs from Ovi store for example? it would be an awesome way to discover new software

@noir_cl: that's the spirit. What else?

Look at music metadata and suggest tracks to match your mood?

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.
Device software V 40.0.005

Ovi maps data could also be used.

Suggest different places near you based on your feelings.

This is possibly the biggest waste of engineering resources possible for Nokia. How about adding kinetic scrolling to every screen (eg, Menu) of all s60v5 devices or creating a nice video editor for in-phone editing or integrating other innovative input methods like slideIT?

Come on Nokia! You are not going to win back market share from Apple or Android by building apps like this one.

I actually think that working on a recommendation engine is quite a useful step for Nokia and think this is an interesting experiment.

What I don't really get is this 'feeling'-approach, which seems quite strange to me. I didn't like it in PlaylistDJ either, where I always start with a song I like and then let it create a playlist.

To make it short, this should be about recommending NEW stuff
- from ovi store
- from the music store
- from your music library

but it seems like an interesting start. So keep on experimenting!

I haven't tried it since I don't have a 5th edition phone, but something similar could probably be done to replace or enhance the tutorial that comes on phones. After a while, start to show you things you've never used before or hardly used at all, and so on. As other people wrote this could also include new stuff coming in Ovi Store or wherever. Of course the key is to make it interesting enough that people open this kind of app more than once. How you feel is a reasonably good hook I guess.

It will be nice to have this in the S60 3rd edition or is this only for 5th edition phones only?

hi how to use it

I have a great idea how you can take this project forward: Make it work for Nokia 5800 Xpress Music!

when it will be avilable to 3rd Geologist/ Ahmed Salah Nokia N95-1, Etisalat Egypt

Nokia engineers are wasting their time by developing these kind of applications. Please try to fix issues in Nokia 5530 phone. It requires so many fixes and upgrades.

Well, I think this app is good for learning wgz app development. It is also very good for people using their phone for the first few years as it shows the power of the new phone. I believe there are another set of people dealing with problems with phones so there is no point of flaming Nokia in this forum

For me, it is definitely a mistake to say that Nokia Feel is working on S60v5 devices. Because it is not working on Nokia 5800. And I will going on with reporting and calling it a bug, until you say the trueth and say that Nokia Feel is not working on Nokia 5800 or will not work on Nokia 5800.

Now, it is your turn to make a step and going to surprise us or whatever.

I think it is a fun idea! Add Movies to the list and "Point and Find" or other local advertisements!

Tap into feelings to recommend music, places, apps, movies, ovi store is a good idea! You could probably even link it to the advertisements on the "Point and find" app and use it for useful advertising revenue. I would like to see the ads. for that!
You could even add "feelings" tags to music playlists I reckon, then you could turn on your feeling when you want to listen to music and let the phone have fun playing you music and showing you local stuff related to your feeling!

I think this could go beyond just a learning tool for the phone and become something fun to have on there all the time.
It could turn into a "phone experience" I reckon!

It would be nice if people stopped whining about "beta's" not working on their phone... This is a development site right? and is designed to get feedback not to roll out "polished products".
New phones come with premium products, so while it is a nice present (and beautiful philosophy) for Nokia to make their new products backward compatible it is not their requirement to do so. We keep getting new apps for free whereas if it was on your PC you would have to pay for an upgrade to get new functionality right?

Hi All,

And thank you for the many comments that you have posted!

First of all, due high number of posting about problems with certain phone models, I would like to emphasize that the application has been developed for and tested with Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 mini. Exactly the type of misbehaving as you have reported, slowness on opening, etc. can be expected with other S60 5th edition devices, like Nokia 5230, Nokia 5530, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia X6.

Let me enlighten you with some background when designing the application. We tried to keep the suggestion view of a feeling as simple as possible by offering three suggestions at the time. Those listed three suggestions, however, are randomized so you should get different three every time you select the feeling. Note that some feelings have more suggestions to offer than others.

The intention of the application is to promote the capabilities of the device at hand. Definitely worth of further investigating is the possibility to suggest applications in Ovi Store based on the feeling. The other very good suggestion was the tie in with Nokia Music Store. It could suggest certain genre or even playlists based on selected feeling. And of course those obvious ones, which we left out from this version, utilizing Ovi Maps in more detailed.

Hope you are enjoying the application and keep on posting those good ideas.

Thanks,

-Roope-

I have Nokia 5320XM. I installed this but when I open it, I see only a cursor like the cursor of web browser, with black background. All I can do is to move the cursor around the screen, get tired of this, and close the application! Is there any way by which I can use this app?
