Ovi Mail now integrated with Contacts and available in Arabic
Thu, 2010-03-04 10:28The Ovi Mail team has just released Ovi Mail 2.0. With this release, your Ovi Mail contacts and Ovi Contacts are merged into one contacts list. You can view, edit, delete or create your contacts from Ovi Contacts or Ovi Mail. You can also sync your device phonebook with Ovi Contacts and Ovi Mail. This was the most desired feature by Ovi Mail users and we are excited to bring this to you.
The following use case is now supported with the changes in Ovi Mail 2.0:
Save a contact and view from device:
- User opens an email from a friend in Ovi Mail on the web and sends a reply back
- Ovi Mail shows a dialog box asking if he wants to add the person to his address book. User says yes and fills in the entries and clicks on ‘Add contact’
- Within a few minutes, the new contact appears in Ovi Contacts on the web because Ovi Mail now is integrated with Ovi Contacts
- User decides to sync his phone to get the newly added contact on his phone. User can either initiate a sync from device or from Ovi Contacts on the web to sync his contacts
- After the sync completes, user views the Phonebook on the device and the name of the friend and the newly added email address appear in the Phonebook on the phone
Ovi Mail 2.0 also comes with Arabic support to help customers in Arabic-speaking countries view their Ovi Mail account in Arabic. Over 280 Million people use Arabic as their first language. This was a challenging feature to implement considering the fact that it’s a right-to-left language and the Ovi Mail UI had to be changed to support this orientation.
Please try it out at mail.ovi.com or on your device and let us know what you think here at Nokia Beta Labs.

Nice work guys. I assuem this also means that if the user adds a new contact on the phone and then syncs their phone with OVI Contacts, either via the phones Sync application, via the OVI website (http://www.ovi.com) or via OVI Suite 2.1, next time they are on OVI Mail they will have that new contact available in the OVI Mail Contacts list.
Nice. Long awaited and appreciated. Just need to get the OVI Contacts IM App fully integrated into the OVI System now. You guys have done you part in the Great Integration of OVI Services now. Thanks

I assume there is no difference to OVI Mail on your phone as this uses the phones Adderssbook for Contacts when using Messaging or Nokia Messaging Email. We will only see the effects of the new improvements on our phones when using the Web interface or adding contacts through the web interface.

Thanks for the nice update. I now can ditch my Yahoo! mail and i already ditched my Gmail. Hope the next step will be supporting Yahoo! messenger in Ovi Chat (or whatever its called now) so i can uninstall Yahoo! messengers from my machines.
Regards
Thanks for this! I have to note a bug
I sync my phone all the time yet on the web page it still says "Last Sync = Never"
I am even on my second phone because my first one is being repaired under warantee and I am using a spare.
It's been like this for months!
Does that mean that I can't do the "web initiated" sync that you mention? Because I can't see the option to do that anywhere on the web.
Nokia 6720 classic
Great enhancements.
However, I still refuse to use the service until the impersonal and invasive advertisement is removed from the signature on sent messages.

Great improvement.
Synced Contacts between phone and Ovi contact now appear in Ovi Mail's Address book
With the predictive address working fine both on Web browser and Nokia Messaging, it's now easy to send emails from ovi account.

hi CLTSchwarz,
Mine is displaying correctly the last sync date everytime...
I don't see either where to initiate a sync from Ovi Contacts on the web to sync his contacts....

I have a concern before I attempt to sync my contacts from phone to Ovi.com or from Ovi Suite to Ovi.com. Previously, I am using both N82 and 5800XM. When syncing between phone to Ovi.com, I realise that some duplicates occurs and missing contacts for my N82. It was a real nightmare and I have stopped using it.
Now that contacts that I have previously synced are merged to Ovi Mail, I am very cautious of whether to start using the sync service again from my mobile to Ovi.com. How can I ensure the latest contacts info is synced and no duplication or missing contacts again?
@ken80ny: Nokia do advise that users should start with a known good set of contacts details in one place and then sync that to OVI Suite and on to OVI Website and then back down to your other devices. This way everything should end up initially synchronised. From then on things should run smoother.
One other thing many people miss when syncing contacts is that new contacts created on your phone default to "private" and only contacts set as "public" or "None" will sync to your PIM (Outlook). This is something I have notice with my N series devices.
If you open "Contacts" on your phone and select a "Contact" and go into "edit" mode. If you scoll down to the bottom you will find "Synchronisation". This defaults to "Private" although it can be changed to either "Public" or "None" both of which permit synchronisation.
