Microsoft Silverlight for Symbian – Beta now available
Tue, 2010-03-16 20:35Written by Microsoft Silverlight for Symbian Team
We are pleased to announce the public availability of Microsoft Silverlight for Symbian – Beta. Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform implementation of the .NET Framework for creating media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web on desktop computers and mobile phones. Silverlight beta contains an installer for Symbian^1 devices and developer tools for developing Silverlight applications on Nokia Symbian^1 (S60 5th Edition) mobile devices.
With this release, we have come one more step closer to bringing Silverlight to the Symbian platform that holds single largest market share in the Smartphone market and hence extend Silverlight reach to mobile devices. While Microsoft has done cross-platform work for Silverlight on the desktop, this is the first time Silverlight cross-platform work has been achieved on a non-Microsoft mobile platform.
This beta release is primarily focused towards the developer community so they can start building great experiences on mobile devices. If you’re an existing Silverlight developer or you’re new to Silverlight and would like to get started, the resources below will help you:
- Learn about Silverlight – http://silverlight.net
- Download Silverlight for Symbian – Beta Developer Tools

What to expect?
Since this is still a beta release you may run into issues or bugs. Please share your feedback, comments, brick bats, flowers and whatever that comes to your mind that’ll help us improve the overall quality of the product.

hey guys can anyone recommend any way for me to test silverlight browser compatibility after installing above plugin on my nokia 5800
Pre-install to E: drive on Nokia N97 C: drive available space was 23.9MB. Post install it was 23.8MB. So E: install means E: install. Nice.
Silverlight does not show as an application on your phone, but does show in "Installed Application" within "Application Manager" as a 7MB file, luckily installable on any drive.
If you download the app. via your mobioe browser you will need to close and re-open your browser before it works. Load up took about 30 seconds, but the Bing Silverlight Demo site looks good. On the N97 if you have the keyboard closed and use the touch keyboard the browser will crash as in current Beta does not support Alpha-numeric keyboards. Hopefully that will come in the next update as the dev. team have this as a known bug. This came as a slight disapointment as the site is shown on in portrait view which would cause the crash on all advertising images.
Hope this helps - Will re-post as Review and add to as I go.

At the bottom of the download page ( http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/silverlight/download_and_installation ) Bing is listed as a showcase application/site

This application doesn't work on my N97 mini device. The website shows again that i haven't install silverlight.
@vinnie-terranova Which website? Are you refering to the bing link as that works fine, if a little slow to load, on my N97. Silverlight for Symbian does not currently support v3 so you can not currently view the silverlight website itself.

You actually can use silverlight on Symbian S60 3rd Edition as well, but the included browser doesn't use it.
I'm running silverlight on my N95 8GB with the skyfire browser and it works quite well on most sites, though not all sites and elements are working (yet).
so what exactly can i do with silverlight ?and if its not an app how does it work .im using a 5800
My life consists of small things. Sometimes it seems that they are not important, but it is not. Look at Paul Smith accessories and you’ll see how elegant can be little things around you. People at the subconscious level to notice them and appreciate their style. And this is necessarily reflected in the opinion of you.
No wonder Paul Smith is one of the most popular UK designers. This is because it has for many years does not alter the classical style (Paul Smith accessories is such). And the ability to maintain its unique style has always been highly valued in art. This is especially true of fashion.
Silverlight is good tools. Supporting Symbian - nice step!
