Nokia Braille Reader, the experimental application for accessing incoming text messages using Braille and tactile feedback, is being archived from Beta Labs.
Since publishing the beta in September 2009, the application has been demonstrated in a number of customer events. The idea of using haptics in the user interface has been regarded as highly interesting, well complementing the more common visual and audio interfaces.
Developing the Nokia Braille Reader to a complete commercial application would require adding more features, such as support for e-mail, ways to manage all messages, etc. At the moment, our team has no plans to do this, but the feedback gathered during the past months will be used as input when developing new alternate ways to use our devices and services.
Nevertheless, and as requested by many associations and developers, Beta Labs will keep the Nokia Braille Reader available “as is”.
Stay tuned for new and emerging ideas around haptics and tactile feedback!
