Here and Now graduates from Nokia Beta Labs
Thu, 2010-03-25 10:25Written by Pekka Rissanen, Manager, Here and now
The time has come to say thanks and goodbye. Here and now is about to leave the safety of Beta Labs and enter the big wide world.
The Here and now team would like to thank all users for your valuable feedback. With your help we were able to refine the concept and weed out the quirks. After all, you know what you want.
Based on your feedback, we have created a new version of Here and now. The main difference is that the UI is now browser-based. Although liked by many (including us), the previews were an unnecessary extra step when the services are web based anyhow. Also, there were situations where the fit between the application UI and the browser was not smooth enough.
The new Here and now downloads a web page showing the weather and the highlights of local movies, restaurants and events. The page is automatically customized according to your location, language and screen resolution. It is also optimized for mobile usage in order to keep the download times short.
As you probably know, these services are now also available via Nokia Ovi Maps 3.03. What's the point of Here and now then? Simply put, it offers the highlights at a glance in the browser. We like to give alternatives - you decide what you like.
The new version is available via Software Update (over-the-air or through Ovi Suite) and in Ovi Store for these devices:
Nokia 6710 Navigator
Nokia E52
Nokia E55
Nokia E72
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Nokia 5230
Nokia 5235
Nokia X6
Nokia N97 Mini
Note: It is probably a good idea to uninstall the Beta Labs version first.
We hope to add more devices soon. If your device is not listed yet, you can still keep on using the Beta Labs version.
Many thanks and bye for now!
On behalf of the Here and now team,
Pekka Rissanen

Seems a little harsh that it's not available for the "Flagship Device", but that's the way these things go sometimes. We have a lot of the functionality embedded in OVI Maps now anyway.
We can always get it for the N97 by other means. Sure the N97 mini version will probably work on the N97.

Yeah .. I also got the "Flagship Device" but as it is not yet available for it I will use the mini version ... :(
no offence. is this yet another "device not supported" issue? :P I think it just can't be avoided...
If you are using the Beta Ovi Maps 3.04 Here and Now is not part of Ovi Maps. :)Its a beta anyway.
need to setup a community graduate criteria uh? :)
well I just installed it in my n97mini and my wife's 5800 as soon as it appeared in the "sw update" application. Works just fine, though I' getting a bit bored of the n97mini's browser's automatic and unavoidable "fullscreen" mode...
the botton line, it's great to have here and now again :)

The application is running fine in my Nokia N97, but we need to pass some compatiblity testing etc. in order to distribute via Software Update and Ovi Store. Hope to see that soon, also some other devices are in that same pipeline.

Great news! Not only the new firmware update for N85 disabled Here and Now beta, but the utility also graduated from Beta Labs without any support for 3.2 devices! Good job, Nokia, on keeping up with miserable user experience!
@denbaranov: I am sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience with the Here and now beta after a firmware update. In similar cases re-installation has usually helped.
About S60 3.2 devices support: The currently supported S60 3.2 devices are listed above and we hope to add more later.

Are there so many critical differences between N97 and N97 mini for an application such as "Here and Now" to have problems to run? Unless it makes use of some unique hardware or API, there should be no problems between these two devices.

I love this app, I live off of the weather on it every day.

Muy buena aplicacion. Queremos esta web en Español!
muito bom funciona perfeito no meu 5800 xp.
obrigado...
Guys I just had an idea...
How about Nokia beta labs take all the people working so far on the Here and Now and makes them develop a 5th edition Conversation app?
Why am I telling Nokia to do something like this... It seems that they have got a lot of engineers who don't have anything to do over there...
Thus they make them develop applications that overlap each other (if you are using Nokia Maps you can find the same functionality as in Here and Now there)
I don't get it really...
But mind you it's not a bug or anything butfor goodeness sakes what is the point opf making an application that does something which is already available elsewhere?
"We like to give alternatives - you decide what you like."
at the same time users of nokia got their chance at an alternative view of the SMS taken away because of...?
good to know, i've been liking this app since it's debut --- N95 31.0.0.17 | N97 21.0.045 --- http://hi.im/iivo
Something that could be improved is that in some countries, the m / s is not used, it would rather km / h, and the conversion is not simple: 1 m / s = 3.6 km / h
Is that there would be no possibility of including an automatic conversion for those who want?
Thanks redreku,
Wasn't having a go in any way as As I said a lot of the functionality was ported into OVI Maps 3.03 and above in the form of "Weather and Events" or at least I see them as taking "Here and Now" functionality and porting them into OVI Maps.
Nice that users are soon to get the option to get the Here and Now app from Software Update and OVI Store soon though. I realise that, from previous discussions with Nokia staff, the N97 does have it's special manerisms.

hey people.. I have been using Here and Now application for last 2 months. predicts weather very well, in fact all my friends ask me about the weather instead of calling the weather center.
Except for one thing.... the wind speed how ever dont seem to be right some how. "6 m/s" what is this?
Can someone explain to me how is the wind speed measured in Here and Now. We do in miles per hour.
