Introducing Nokia Bots: add-ons that make daily routines easier by learning from your behavior

Written by Ari Tourunen, Symbian Devices, Nokia Bots team

We have just released Nokia Bots, a collection of add-ons that autonomously learn your personal preferences and improve the user experience with your daily routines. These Bots run on the homescreen and observe how you use your phone. If it seems that you could benefit from some customization, they automatically configure and activate themselves.

At the moment, Nokia Bots include four handy add-ons:

  • Profile Bot helps you by automating  profile changes during meetings.
  • Alarm Bot learns at what time you usually wake up, and suggests alarms and profile changes nightly.
  • Shortcut Bot provides quick access to your most frequently used applications. Your preferences are learned in the background, and shortcuts automatically updated.
  • Battery Bot lets you know if your battery needs to be charged in the evening before you go to sleep.

Nokia Bots is currently available for N97 and N97 mini. Please download Nokia Bots and try it out in your own phone. And don’t forget to share your thoughts and ideas with us.

Installing now - this is something I've wanted my phone to do for a long while - great job to the team who put this together, I'm anxious to see more bots in the future.

Already have a feature suggestion - on the ShortcutBot, when I first activate it, the slots are empty - how about letting me set some defaults, to use while the app is learning? That would keep it useful in the early part of its learning.

Sounds Cool. However, any support for 5800 XM in the pipeline?

been suggesting and waiting for this since i first played around with mobots on my n95 two years ago, so thank you for thinking this was a good idea... Looking forward to follow this project! --- N95 31.0.0.17 | N97 21.0.045 --- http://hi.im/iivo

can we expect to see it on nokia 5800 also?

Unless I'm blind I dont see this in app folder after downloading but I do see its installed in appl manager. Does it run in the background?

Nope, it is a widget and you have to add it to an free slot on the homescreen of your N97 (Mini)

Good job for the owners of the "flagship" phone. How about a version for the 5800XM?

No doubt that this kind of self-learning app is the way of the future. I have a feeling this is going to replace my default shortcuts bar as a minimum (I'm sure I'm not the only one who is a bit 'lazy' when it comes to customising this...

@mspeirings, thanks! Can't believe I didnt think of that.

Awesome idea, look forward to trying this. I don't like fiddling with alarms and like the idea of being offered an alarm setting on the homscreen, rather than having to go into the menu to activate one.

I love the whole concept behind this and hope this is the start of something wonderful.... really looking forward to assisting with this beta

nice app , will be more useful if the bots can get into contacts and automatically change the most called numbers in the widget in an order.

The bots will make the smart phone smarter. A similar if simple already available in some phones is the reminder to unplug the charger from the power supply socket when it is disconnected from the phone. The new series 40 phones have a dialog where one must press ok to dismiss this reminder.

I am sure no other phone company thought of giving such an interactive perosnality to the phone os. These bots will help the phone 'understand' - what their owner wants and when. This will save time and energy. People will be happy with their device's intuitive intelligence. Congratulations on a super concept!

Now when will you release a version for the Nokia 5800 XM?

5800 version please!

It would be great to have this application on Nokia 5800!

where is the version for 5800? is it in the making or no support at all?

I would love to have this app on my 5800! :) Hope it will come out some day.. :P

nice app but i just caught something. Using the shortcut bot i could open apps. But when i wanted to open an already opened minimised app, it refused to come up on the front screen. this only happens to java apps (opera mini 5 and network accelerator)

Nokia labs was very nice... Because it has a lot of Symbian-apps. Now we don't find any Symbian-apps but only phone-apps... It is sooo boring for all the other users! Nokia has 1000 phones, but every phone can starts only application made for that phone! Why you don't insert a standard to all you phones? So we can all test new applications?

Does the bot need to be a widget? I think it's alright on S60 5th edition devices.
By making it an app, other platforms like S60 3rd edition can also benifit from a self-learning app.

Why one more app that must be installed in the phone memory C:?
No one at Nokia knows anything about the short memory space on the N97??????????????????????????????

Guys, I know I don't own a flagship phone but 5800 XM has same OS and I am still waiting for widget screen and this app for my 5800.

I've been running the bots since it was announced last week (thanks Ricky) and aside from actually starting my usage of it when I was doing something outside of my normal routine - therefore the bot gets a weird curve in learning - I'm quite pleased.

I could see a number of ways that Nokia Bots could "grow" with a person's usage. For example, it would make sense for the Nokia Bot to be able to turn on other widgets such as the Music Player and Calendar, when it sees that these applications are being used - or in the case of the calendar, as part of an advance notification of an event. And then when those apps have had no interaction or the application has been exited, then Nokia Bots would turn off the corresponding widget from the homescreen.

The shortcut bot should pull the apps which are already in the Fav I widget when its initialized, instead of being empty.

The shortcuts widget should also be able to respond to web favorites as well as applications.

The alarm, profile, and battery bot seem solid enough to replace the default widgets for these items. Could be pretty interesting in the future to get that screen-space back.

I'd also see the default setup as a basic bot, and then there would be some ability to add new bots to this, or "unlock" new bots as certain functionality is learned. For example, after the default bot learns the profile and alarm aspects, then it would make sense for the device to offer to use a GPS bot to better learn profile and alarm information via GPS/cell location.

Sorry for the length, but I (like others) like Nokia Bots, and am glad to see that UI-AI has progressed to the point that Nokia is playing publicly with this kind of UX for mobiles. This research bodes well for users, as well as Nokia, towards leaning more about how we use our devices.

To those looking for this for the 5800 (and similar models), I doubt that you will see it for that as those homescreens don't seem to be programmaticly designed for the same WRT usages .

With regard to the shortcut bot, might it be useful to have a different set of shortcuts depending on time of day. For example I use radio and internet in the morning and evening as I walk to and from work and then messaging, calender and nokia maps etc during the day. Just a thought!

please create this for 5800 also.......

Do like the principal of this app, but haven't seen it do much other than learning on my N97 as yet. Am running v20.0.019 FW as this is the latest permitted on Voda UK product code.

Will post a review when I've been using the Bots for over a week.

Like the Shortcut Bot, but needs an ignore specific apps option as requested by others.

Is it near by any chance?
Thanks for betalabs it's very useful

Hi,
I installed the bots for 5800, but they did not appear or there was no way to add the shortcuts. I like my Nokia 5800 XM very much, but most of the developers release software for this phone late.
I really hope nokia would release the bots add-on for Nokia 5800 XM any time soon.

Thank you in advance.

I agree with mygis - installed on 5800 but cant see it or invoke it and the widget is not visible. I hope to see the real functionality soon.

Thanks.

I agree with u both.It isn't working on my 5800 XM & i hope that this app will be available for 5800 XM also

I agree with the above 3... I installed it in NOKIA 5530 XM. Cannot find the application start-up icon.

Can someone put some light on whts happening? :O

We have chosen to start with some devices (picked N97) and then proceed based on feedback. This very high interest for 5800 based implementations is of course now taken seriously and we will study how we could address those devices as well.

I have got a nokia 5235 witch is very simulair to the 5800 and i want it to.
Its a amezing app.
(sorry for the bat english)

Nokia is great!!!

Yes, please make a version for 5800 XM. Would be great to have this.

Please for Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic

Please FOR NOKIA 5800 XM

No sense! Where is the 5800 XM version?

Sometimes I can't understand Nokia.

Hi there,

I just hope it could work for the 5800 XM ;)

Cheers.

@mygis (and all 5800 nokia bots craving fellas)

guys, it is already possible to have Nokia bots on 5800XM. I've been using it for two weeks already. The problem is that the current version of bots won't work on the simple 5800 homescreen - thus needs a little firmware boost. More specifically to N97 or C6 homescreen.

If you'd like nokia bots on your 5800, you'll (at the moment) have to sacrifice the 5800 interface for N97/C6 interface.

how can u do that? I mean by changing homescreen to to c6 etc. Frm nokia 5530/5800
