Ovi Contacts graduates from betalabs – future development focused on Nokia Messaging Chat

Ovi Contacts screenshots

Moi,

Ovi Contacts was introduced to betalabs some 18 months ago. Since then, the beta client alone has been downloaded close to 300 000 times, and it has over 2400 followers in betalabs, who have posted thousands of insightful feedback posts. Quite a remarkable contribution to Ovi Contacts development! Now it is time to say thank you and mark a notable milestone as Ovi Contacts graduates from betalabs.

The commercial Ovi Contacts client is available for compatible S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 and S60 5th Edition devices through software update, as well as pre-installed with new devices. You can also download the latest client to your device through your mobile browser at http://contacts.ovi.com/dist/app.

It is also time to look forward. Today, we provide two applications that let you access the Ovi Chat service: Ovi Contacts and Nokia Messaging Chat. Not only is this confusing to you, our users, but also inefficient for us. To consolidate our offerings, we will focus future development efforts on the Nokia Messaging Chat application, which provides access to multiple popular IM communities, including Ovi Chat.

To further improve the Nokia Messaging Chat experience, we are looking at including some of the features that made Ovi Contacts so unique among IM solutions, as well as cross-community features that will benefit users of all of our IM communities, and the addition of even more IM communities. For the development work, we will utilize the experience gained from Ovi Contacts development, as well as the valuable feedback that you have already provided for Ovi Contacts here in betalabs. We also invite you to provide any feedback about what Ovi Contacts features you would like to see incorporated into the Nokia Messaging Chat application.

Having had the privilege to work with one of the most followed, used, and discussed applications in betalabs, I would like to express the warmest thank you to all of you who have contributed to Ovi Contacts development.

Cheers,
Anni
On behalf of the Ovi Contacts team

If you are going to focus on NM for Chat, please take into account, that NM for Chat doesn't have any notificacion on home screen and it is not possible to change the notification sound but Ovi Contacts does. Those are things I have wrotten many times, but It seems to me that you don't hear. Also it would be good to copy and paste and receive and send files. I hope you heard me,

Also please consider NM Chat consumes much more power than Ovi Contacts and is very slow in the 5800 and n97 mini

I'm glad to see this app graduated to let the open way to Nokia Messaging.. As I wrote recently in a post on the NM for Im forum there are a lot of Ovi Contacts features that MUST to be included in NM for this to be a better and complete app.. From my personal point of view, this features are: notification on home screen, change notification sound, space on memory and the abality to install on mass memory, contacts integration, files (audio, video, image, vcard, etc) transference, send and receive position, support for other phones besides n97.. I think these are the most important, as you can see I'm not adding anything new just including the same features ovi contacts already have..

By the way, there is any difference between the last beta version and the comercial release?

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic v50.2.005

I prefer ovi contacts than NM chat because it's much faster and light ... I used it every day and the only issue a got it's the signal ... It's like the Blackberry messenger jeje... But in the NMchat it's a little bit slow to send and recive IM .... and that's not good for an IM app ...In other case OC don't used big part of the Battery, a good point in my case ... i'm just waitting for the 1.5 update for my E71...

As @danielgleon has asked about is there any changelog for this "graduate" ?

I would have loved to see this going other way round !!!
really like to see Ovi contacts with multi-service(Google,MSN,Yahoo) capability of Nokia Messaging Chat.

So I think you should do just that, rather than trying to get OVI Contacts feature in Nokia Messaging Chat.
UI for Ovi Contacts is much much better than NM Chat.

just when we get a workable version of ovi contacts its got archived or may i say cold dumped.its typical nokia: not single perfect innovation but bit from here and tat from there, like so many version of s60 where as its hard to keep one maintained. I wish they keep this project running on beta labs.
chat program in .wgz is not even close to contacts neither in ui nor in features. so please think twice making this go away

But what am i saying: is if beta lab our only hope against google app

Edit: Its not final, they would think as the messaging tweet says :)

Sad to see OVI Contacts graduate, but not completely sure of the difference between graduation and archiving. Interested to see how long the service will be maintained for.

Nice app guys. Sad to see it stop developing.

i clicked on the link to download for my n95 8gb but it said device not supported.what could be the problem?

I have to agree with suyog. I would have loved to merge the capabilities of NM Chat with OC. But I guess I will have to wait and see. Just my 2 cents. I think that is the way to go. That and social networks integration all into the contacts app.
Cheers

all these applications make the cell phone very slow. Nokia should think of making applications that will not make the cell phone operating system slow...

That is because they aren't really applications, they are widgets. Nokia thinks if they use widgets for serious stuff, developers will trust to them.
Of course it backfires, half of issues coming with ovl store, like not being able to update sw comes from widget limitations.
Nokia chat for IM is a j2me app too, so nimbuzz or fring doing r0x more will eat a lot less battery as they are native symbian apps.

I want this version to my mobile e 63

Nice to see that there will only be one Chat application offering in the end! I'm sure the 'combination' of the two chat apps will take the best of both apps and make a fast native app.

Nokia 6720 classic

since you deleted my comment, i will post it again:

how ovi contacts has become a commercial app now if you dosent support all your smartphones and the behalf that: "Nokia S60 previous to FP2 do not posses technical enablers... blah blah blah"

BBM supports even their oldest phones, you dont. So, where did it go "Nokia connecting people" if you only connect your newest phones?. I bought this december my E63 and it is already old? It was released at 2008 finals! Then, you should make special offers for these "old" phones instead of keep on the price :)

Ban me if you want, I dont care :) I dont use ovi anymore...

If I hurt anyone im sorry, but as a client of nokia I have the right to complain, specially when our complaints are not even heard.

Using my phone I went to:
http://contacts.ovi.com/dist/app.
and the 6720 classic wasn't there. the web page said it didn't recognize my device either.

Nokia 6720 classic

Hi all, while OVI contacts is a decent application this obviously won't be developed further.

The mandate for Nokia is to push QT and also work with partners.

Qt will replace the UI for all Nokia's apps, and as most S^3 (and all Symbian 4) will use QT, they will stop developing non-QT apps. Because most of our existing phones don't have QT, there's no point to continue developing this non-QT Ovi Chat.

Nokia have failed to deliver tech in house (except Maps), so leveraging on MSN / Gtalk / Yahoo chat etc makes a lot more sense going forward.

Move onto Nokia Messaging using QT, make it faster, and make sure the new firmware for all S60v5 phones get QT in their firmware so poeple will start using it!

sad story for those who own the 'old' device (e71, e63, etc)
Guys, if our 'old' phones doesn't have some sort of software/driver/whatever required to install and enjoy the latest nokia software, why dont you bring all the required stuffs on firmware update? Come on..
My e71 FW has been updated to v500, and the ovi contacts app is still as it was, v1.06
No change, no improvement.. Are we dont have any right to enjoy latest nokia software on our NOKIA? Shame on you..

Please take this advice into account..
If you dont, i dont care either.. This is all about how the guys in betalabs work to maintain NOKIA's customers and fans..

Nokia, if you think QT the best. Please make NM chat to the only one best chat app for Nokia device and pre-installed QT runtime in next firmware release for all Nokia devices.

Coding an app in Qt just to show off/demo would backfire.
On the other hand, if they ported a KDE/Qt chat IM app to Symbian thanks to Qt framework or sponsored its development for symbian (with a real device donation etc.) be sure it would make headlines and prove Qt delivers.

Moi,
Thanks for the discussion and good suggestions. I have also started <a href="https://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-messaging-for-im-beta/discussion/1... discussion thread</a> in the Nokia Messaging for IM forum about the Ovi Contacts features that you would like to see included in the Nokia Messaging Chat. Hoping to see the discussion continue also there!

There were couple of questions about the features of the commercial Ovi Contacts 1.5 release vs. the beta client: in terms of supported features, these two are identical, but there are some slight differences on the enabler side.

Anni

As when Nokia Chat was thrown to the dead pool and from the ashes came Ovi Contacts, you have to say "so long Ovi Contacts, Long Live to Nokia Messaging IM".

It was pretty obvious that this move was coming. And it is a good move in terms of having a more complete chat solution branded with the nokia badge.

Now it is time for you to get serious with the NM IM and do what all of the community members have said so far for both products. And please make the NM IM "lighter", less battery eater and more responsive. This is urgent. My phone goes dead after 6 hours. I'm a heavy user, using this app along with Nokia Messaging email and Slick for my xmpp account.

Like others have already said, NM would be better if it used the UI of ovi contacts.

Congratulations Team BETA LABS
Integrating other IM clients along with OVI for S60 FP2 is not a bad option.
The dedicated NM for Chat is not that effective :( can be much much better ...

U guys doin gr8 job ... keep it up ..

Wish to C new Dedicated apps for S60 FP2

using E72-1

I really started to wonder the purpose of Nokia beta labs. Is it to make previous generation phone owners mad? Prove that Symbian isn't really device neutral? Show that Qt acquistion and promises wrong as there isn't a single project using the advantages?
As deleting the comment reports: You guys really forget where your wages come from....

Please focus on making better apps for the entire Nokia fones.. pleaseeeeeee. I love NOKIA.. facebook, im , twitter, etc. I dont want to switch to other mobile company . TELI

Okay here goes..I tired it, its nice, much better than ovi chat.. However, we really need to have a few additions for this to be a complete solution

1. Group Chat - How can you miss this!!
2. Proximity Alarm for with options to keep it for specific people, and over a specific radius. I have over 300 FB contacts. Some people just pass from around my place and I dont even know! (Ofcourse, with all kinds of privacy settings you can think of).
3. For people who dont use ovi contacts, location sending should still be possible, ideally opening in the web browser flashing on ovi maps.
4. Access to view and book contact's calenders, and notifications when accepted/declined/clashing.
5. Throw in some simple social games - even hearts, chess or tic-tac would do. Poker will be awesome!
6. Distance and local time of the contact should flash - while staying connected is beautiful, people msging midway through the night since they are unaware of timezones is not a very cool thing. I know you can always update your status as busy or whetever, but an auto timeflash would be great

MOST IMPORTANTLY, ITS NEEDED IN JUST ONE VERSION UPDATE AND THROUGH OVI CONTACTS - NOT SEVERAL UPDATES OVER DIFFERENT APPS. ITS FINE FOR TECH ENTHUSIASTS, BUT FIRMWARE UPDATES FOR OPEN DISTRIBUTION MARKETS ARE BIG IRRITANTS FOR CONSUMERS!

Finally a few irritants:

1. When someone sends a location, it automatically saves the location rather than just flashing. you have to go and delete the saved location everytime - big irritant.

2. I think (not sure) people who use GTALK through a BB are shown offline even if they are not. All my frnds using gtalk thru BB are shown as online on my ovi chat app (for gtalk) but offline on Ovi contacts.

Using Nokia E72-1 version: 031.023 custom version: 031.023.246.02

Good one nokia, just upgraded to the comercial version on my 5800 and baaam! all contacts gone and can´t get into my profile! thanks a lot!

well, certainly, the graduation of ovi contacts rings the bells for development of NM for chat. But then, NM for chat is a java app!! For god sakes, all nokia devices use symbian. Did Nokia forget this while it was developing this app??!! These are valid questions because the entire nokia devices lineup is totally symbian based barring the n900. In this scenario, releasing a java based chat client sounds odd. Would love to see NM for Chat becoming a native app soon!!!

whtat time Updated,tingks!

@rounak_jain1 - from what I've seen it looks more a WRT based app than a Java one to me, but I'm no expert and I may well be wrong.

Anyway, I also think the NM Chat should move to the "native application" side. The current implementation is way too slow and battery-hungry for any real use for longer than 1 hour.

hi and congrats, hope you guys change the direction that nokia messaging im has taken, because ovi contacts was improving really well, really integrated to the ui of the system, easy to use and the lack of communities(msn, yahoo, etc) was a problem but i think it was an opportunity for nokia to crate their own community.
Hope to see more improvements of ovi contacts in NM(i really hated the firt version for the s60 v5 devices).
And by the way it seems that the commercial version of ovi contacts have problems with the stability of the connection again, i have tested the official and the beta version and both have the same problem.

Estimados Sres.

the nokia/ovi chat is actually going to be re branded powered by yahoo along with ovi email. Regarding the change in focus: maybe the utterly most annoying thing w nm for im contra ovi chat is the lack of integration both visual and function vice. I hope the next nm for chat will integrate to the phonebook like ovi chat did.

add video support to ovi contacts

hope that the contacts keep private and do not show unless the user has signed in (user has the ability to auto sign in and save password OR manually sign in and enter password every time). then all contacts can be seen. this will be more secure in case phone is stolen or lost.
