Introducing Ovi Browser Beta for Series 40 – Faster, Easier Web Browsing that Saves Data Costs

We’re excited to introduce the Ovi Browser beta for Series 40 phones to help meet the needs of mobile Internet users in emerging markets and around the world.  We believe users of Series 40 should be entitled to rich web browsing experiences like those of smartphones, but without the same price tag.

The Ovi Browser is powered by patented Internet compression technology that delivers advanced web pages to your phone. The result is that pages show up quicker than ever, plus over the air data is reduced by up to 90%. Beyond performance, the browser includes an innovative user interface that makes it easy to access your favourite content directly from the start page without having to hunt through menus.

Ovi Browser is available as a beta download for popular Nokia Series 40 phones including: 2700 Classic, 2730 Classic, 3120 Classic, 3600 Slide, 5130 XpressMusic, 5220 Xpressmusic, 5310 XpressMusic, 5330 Mobile TV Edition, 5330 Xpressmusic, 5610, 6300i, 6303, 6500 Slide, 6500 Classic, 6600 Slide, 6700 Classic, 7210 Supernova, 7900 Prism and X3.

Keep in mind that this is a beta release, but you’ll see improvements coming as we prepare for a commercial release early next year.  We’re in the process now of building up our global infrastructure to provide the best possible speed, performance, and reliability for millions of users.  We’ll also be adding features to improve local search and personalization and extending support for more local languages and markets.

Download Ovi Browser beta version by going to http://browser.ovi.com on your current mobile browser and follow @ovibynokia on Twitter for tips and updates.  Share your feedback by going to Options > Feedback within Ovi Browser or in the Nokia Beta Labs forum.  Let us know what you think about the beta, and what needs to improve before the launch.

Thanks!

Will this be coming out for the S60 in the near future?

So Nokia is taking on Opera Mini now? Competition is always better.

Looks good for S40, but why are there adverts on this? Will mobile networks get a share of the advertising revenue or will it all go to Nokia? Are there plans to make the standard Symbian browser adware too?

Would love to see this on Nokia Web as well. At least the startmenu looks promising. And datareduction is always good :)

Keep up the great work!

I use Opera Mobile, and the feature I love most about it scrolling via key strokes. I hate, hate, hate pressing the down arrow again and again and again. Sure, I could hold it down, but I usually scroll way past where I want to be. Opera, on the other hand, allows me to page down/up with the "2" and "8" keys. This makes scrolling fast and accurate. I wish Nokia would have a feature such as this in their browsers.

The "2" and "8" keys work as well. You can use those for page up/down.

taking on opera mini may not be a good idea :s... why nokia not working on crippled S60 browser? a great browser on S60 might've helped nokia much IMO.
i've heard nokia will have ovi desktop browsers as well, taking on the likes of google, microsoft, firefox... can't get it either :s
Being a nokia fan wishing for a better days.. hoping MeeGo will be a game changer... all the best!

Fixing s60 webkit browser scandal just by updating webkit engine etc and shipping accross all devices or sponsor Opera Mobile/Mini development would be the sane thing to do. This is Nokia labs we talk about, spending 4x money than Apple R&D but can't even rush/fix N8 firmware. They are so busy coding Opera Mini 1.0

hey guys would be nice if you with ovi browser can improve the speed and the memory issues of the native browser of the s60 devices! please!

Seriously guys, you wake up each day and find new ways to waste money on trying to re invent wheel. What is wrong with Opera Mini or Bolt? Bolt can even display embedded videos for God's sake!
As a Nokia owner and Symbian user, I am absolutely amazed at patience of Nokia shareholders and especially partners. Opera is the company who shipped first actually usable browser on symbian and s40.

The guy in the video should've moved his hands while talking. That simple gesture would make him more interesting to watch. Wearing black, standing still and hands by your side is a horrible way to give a demo.

Just an FYI, Nokia.

could anyone please help me.. i've got a 5310 XpressMusic and i've been using Opera mini.. but of suddenly it seems it has crashed, as whenever i try opening it, the message "Application error" and "java/lang/classNotFoundException:."

some say it new nokia sysptems now need a java 2.1 platform for these apps to work.. do help me.. will the ovi browser work for me?

Hi,

The 5310 XpressMusic is supported for the beta. Have you tried downloading it from browser.ovi.com to see if it works for you?
