Nokia Ovi Suite 3.0 beta now available

Written by Samuli, Nokia Ovi Suite team

Nokia Ovi Suite 3.0 has been in private alpha testing for the past few weeks and now we’re ready to raise the curtains for all of you. In addition to improving the general quality of Nokia Ovi Suite we’ve included lots of new features, mostly in home view and music view. We've improved also installation and first time use by removing unnecessary steps.

The home screen has been redesigned and it offers you ideas on new apps and music on Ovi. You’ll get recommendations for apps that are available for your phone, and you can click your way straight to the app store for more info and download. You’ll also get recommendations for music on Ovi based on music you’ve played on Nokia Ovi Suite. Also, important notifications about software updates and backup will be show in Home view.

Music has evolved from a sync tool into a music management system, with a full play console. You can manage your music collection, create playlists and transfer music to your phone by simply dragging and dropping tracks, albums and playlists to your device. You can also search, preview and download new music on Ovi. We have over 11 million tracks to search from so you’re sure to find your favorite music there!

Try it out and let us know what you think!

still no mac support? Are you guys doing this on purpose? Some kind of new technological psychological condition?
Why on earth you bought Qt?

Do we have support for messages on the n900?

Gracias Nokia, ustedes siempre mejorando cada día todos y cada uno de sus productos! saludos desde México!

So far quite good work.
But as many others, i still miss Mac support.
I know creating good software from scratch isn't easy, but you couldn't be surprised if people get impatient when quite over a year after a "coming soon" statement there's still nothing on the horizon.
But as the 3 series clearly being the build tree with which mac support will start, there is another question: Will mac and windows builds match?

I think I'm quickly going to un-install this one and revert to the prior released version of Ovi-Suite.

It is unresponsive, slow and actually also slows down my Windows 7. I've had to kill the process in task-manager several times just to get control back of Windows. Something is definitly not working right here.

WHAT ABOUT MAC???????????!!!!!!!!????????!!!!!!!!??????????

Why no Mac !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's only private alpha release. Mac user can use iTunes! :D

Does it notify the user for the new incoming calls now? If not, is there an intention to include such a feature as it in the PC suite?
Please I need to know.

Good News, but I'm not sure I dare to testing at the moment, as I got so many problems the last time i tested (the beta of version 2)....

...who am I kidding of course I will be testing it..

I cant download the file, is the link correct?

So far it works well, it even syncs when I connect or walk into the room (Bluetooth) and that is neat, (I always had problems with the previous one), one thing in the music player was that I did not see a shuffle control, is it there and I missed it. Anyway, it is a great improvement for me

i think that u been better if u integrate ovi store in ovi suite ,with the option to install applications on the phone.

Please, please, please, focus on stability and bug fixes and improving speed, not implement yet another music manager.

Ovi Suite 2.2 has been going downhill even when every update promises stability improvements. The first 2.0 beta was nice, fast and although missed features compared to the old PC Suite it worked on basic tasks. Now with 2.2 "Not responding" is a rule, not exception, establishing internet connection works about 70% of the time and I won't even start with ridiculous features - my favorite being that Ovi Suite pops up to front when plugging phone in (if it doesn't crash and after a long delay) happily displaying my first contact and last SMS to everyone watching over my shoulder / presentation from projector - why oh why? And this _can_ happen accidently because just moving the phone with bluetooth on to bt range does this.

People demanding Mac version: You are not missing anything. Use alternatives.

Hmm.. Just looking at the Video, and I do not sit back with a feeling that this should be installed.
The homescreen, is this static. I certainly hope not, I know I will be irritated of adverts of all kind of software.
Can this be disabled, and configured to my preferences??

The Music improvements - Looks mostly like this is about selling music to users from Ovi-store

So where is improvement otherwise? Can I look at Video. Is the timeline in photoview implemented, can I send SMS from Ovi-not-so-sweet?

And most importantly, will this co-exist with PC-suite?

Still waiting for better mac software. nokia multimedia transfer is not optimized as it keep maxing my cpu usage as soon as i use it! and i have a Core2 duo !
Not speaking about the nokia map loader who is buggy and not useable!

zyzko - what are the alternatives?

So, where's the Mac version we were promised? :/

Sclee Still crashes when trying to synch Calendar

The Home Screen should be customizable. To be able to keep on it things I want. I might for example, want to hide OVI store suggestions

Still hoping to be able to sort my contacts by Groups... as I could do in the old days...
It helped me out to assign groups to contacts with no groups...
One day... maybe...

Major problems drag and dropping mp3 to my N8 with this beta!

Mac and OSx please

I have been using Ovi Suite 3.0 Beta for about 5-6 days now and here are my comments:

UI/Functionality/Integration
Overall the UI is great and it works well, no glitches whatsoever! It's easier to move around from Contacts to Messages and to music (and vice versa). However, why do I have to go on Ovi Store web when i click an application from Ovi Store via the Ovi Suite? Cant you design an interface directly from Ovi Suite?
Otherwise, I really like the one-stop-shop aspect, no need to have multi Ovi apps open

Calling Contacts from Ovi
- if you can enable this feature it would be really great. I missed it from the classic PC Suite

New Message Pop Up
- This feature is great, but very poor, if you can adapt the Outlook new message pop up alert then Ovi will be a killer app.

STILL NO CALENDAR
- Why? Why? WHY???

Sync with Ovi.com
- I don't know if it's just me, (my profile auto logs in each time I open Ovi Suite), however, I always find that items synced on ovi.com (from the handset) don't really reflect on Ovi Suite (and vice-versa), so instead of syncing one place (either via Ovi Suite or from the phone) and have all items synced, I have to sync them from both locations!!! This is so annoying!

Over all impressions
- The lack of Calendar really hamstrings this application, I prefer organizing my PIM from the desktop (ovi.com web app is really not good enough - for me) so I was really looking forward to this version, I guess it's a wait and see.
Apart from that, this is really a great update, I am sure that soon it will become a killer application for PIM management.

Please let us know when rewrite or port of Nokia Ovi Suite using Qt (Windows, Mac and Linux) has started and downloads are available for testing.

Would be happy to try, but where's the Linux version?

Good

Are we still facing problems to sync outlook 2010 with N8? I just don't get that option. The calendar and notes appear greyed out (NA for selection). OVi Suite version is 3.1.0.91. Please guide...

Why can Ovi not store outbound SMS messages typed on the computer inwith the inbound ones that form the rest of the conversation and which have been sync'd from the phone? This would make converations more than a day old easier to recollect.

my OVI store never connects
it always shows connecting
help..... help

WHEN A MAC VERSION??? I'M TIRED OF HEARING WORDS ABOUT A "COMING SOON"... IT'S BEEN YEARS SINCE YOU STARTED SAYING THAT!!! AND NOW MAC OSX LION HASN'T ISYNC ANYMORE... WHAT WILL THE MAC USERS DO??? THROW THEIR NOKIAS AWAY?? DOES NOKIA STILL CARE ABOUT US??

I really want Linux version by the time Nokia N9 is available.

good
