Augmented reality going mainstream at Nokia

Written by Terri, Nokia Point & Find team

Thank you for downloading and trying out Nokia Point & Find Beta!

Launched as a trial on April 1, 2009, Nokia Point & Find has been used by millions of people and has been recognized with numerous awards for its innovation in technology and marketing including the Wall Street Journal Innovation Runner-up Award, a Stevie Award, and a Mobile Merit runner-up nod.  Last summer in London, Point & Find powered the Conspiracy For Good -- an innovative alternate reality game produced by Heroes creator, Tim Kring. Projects like this really pave the way on how we’ll live our lives and use our mobile devices in the future . . . connecting the physical world with the digital!

As an outcome of our beta service, we learned many things about how to continue delivering pioneering experiences to excite and delight our consumers and publishers.  Subsequently, we have made decisions to integrate Point & Find’s underlying visual search and AR technology in a way where consumers can access it as part of their core device and service experience . . . as in the future of key experiences like Maps and Search .  During the coming months you will see these efforts become a reality.  If you’re a developer, you might even be able to build apps with augmented reality capabilities stemming from Point & Find and publish them to the Ovi Store.  In preparation for this larger offering, we’re going to remove the Nokia Point & Find application from the Ovi Store at the end of January.  Stay tuned for more exciting news about augmented reality from Nokia!

We’re excited about visionary technologies at Nokia, and we hope you are as well!  Visit us often at Ovi.com to shop for the latest applications from Nokia and our valued partners.  And thanks for your support and contribution in bringing state-of-the-art experiences to Nokia phones.

i am sure this a program with lots of potential, but i couldnt use it after installation, and so as many other people. what kind of awards were it nominated for because there are way better apps in other platforms. when Steve jobs talked about fragmentation of android, i think Nokia is much worse than android. so many different platform and versions of each phone must be a nightmare to make an apps for.

It has never been available for E72.

Another senseless choice made by Nokia.

I installed it in my N95 8Gb, but I've never managed to get it working.

Since it will become unavailable at the end of the month, I will give it another try with my N8.

with all due respect

symbian 2 5th edition and symbian 3 are both extremely powerful platforms and very much comparable with the android and iOS....in fact you must be proud to be using a symbian phone as they have a dedicated site that develops apps for the users like us and over all its totally free UNLIkE APPLE AND ANDROID marketplace....you are getting class A apps with live feedback and reviews...moreover nokia has over 45% marketshare...they know wt they r doing.....

A proud Symbian 2 S60 V5 OS9.4 user

also note that AR requires compass...so only those with the compass should b programmd for...the others will never get AR

So you are pulling a working product from Ovi store for which reason exactly? Don't we know when updated product ships, it will be N8/E7 only? Do you really think we haven't figured your cunning scheme?

It is really amazing since one of major features that E72 has is the digital compass. If one abandons his/her E71 for E72, it is really compass/ram and faster CPU. Absolutely nothing else. That is why E71 still sells for a lower price side to side with E72. So when sales guy being asked why is it more expensive than better looking E71, what to say?

Augmented reality on N8 widely expected and required !!

I'm working especially with Japan, adn I always dream and wish to obtain one day, one specific Augmentation reality application I can use to show japanese panel (with katakana you can't look for into a dictionnary, extremely complexe to do that...

So you should point out with your N8 camera the panel or restaurant menu and you might obtain automatically the direct translation...

I waiting forward In reading your comment, I keep my fingers crossed to convince you with this suggestion
THnaks a lot for the nokia meta Labs site I enjoy to read regularly

(Sorry for mybad english skill)
All the best from Lyon(France)

Point & find is slow and very confusing app to use on N97. Also I never complished to find something with it.

More services I will never be able to use on my E72 then. P&F was never available for this relatively new phone. No more new versions of Maps for the E72 we're told also and touch is the only focus now.

Learn to walk before you try to fly, Nokia.

Where is the IM (Nokia Messaging) for 5800/S60 you promised? Are you trying to cover up your inability to deliver promises with something most of your handsets are incapable of?

I want to use this app as a barcode reader. Did Anyone try? what's the performance on 1d and 2d barcode reading. for me it doesn't work for 1D barcode scanning.

How long does it have to take to make this available??
Its more than a month ago and it is still not available.
I am really dissapointed in the development of software for nokia compared to Iphone, Blackberry or android.
Nokia is way behind, and it makes me feel sorry to have actually bought a nokia.
