Introducing Nokia Reader 1.0 Beta for Symbian

Written by Markus, Nokia Reader team

Looking for a simple and easy to use RSS reader to manage news feeds on your Symbian^3 or S60 5.0 device? Nokia Reader pushes your favorite news feeds to your homescreen allowing you to quickly catch up on current events.

This useful application is easy to setup: Just select your favorite feeds from a pre-populated list of major news sources or add a new feed just by typing the website address.

And thanks to push notifications, battery consumption is modest and content is always fresh.

Main features include:

  • Uses push notifications
  • Content directory
  • Homescreen widget
  • Supports Nokia Account

Please note: Nokia Reader is an experimental beta application and service, which was created for testing push notifications globally. It is not flawless, but we would value your feedback for this early beta.

Please try it out, and let us know how Nokia Reader is working for you!

What You discontinueing support for 5800XM?

I just read in the discussion section that they are having technical issues with the push notification package in the 5800, so until this get resolved then this app can't work. I hope the technical issues get resolved soon.
They haven't promised anything though.

This sounds great; I'll give it a shot.

Any chance we could one day get pull support (for battery life) as well as Google Reader integration? The latter would be a rather big deal for me, at the moment I'm using Gravity but it's not quite the perfect RSS reader.

Very nice handy app. I am using Opera Mini for reading RSS feeds for the last years but I will sure leave that if Nokia Reader provides me these features soon.

1. Ability to open "Read more" links in the default browser set by the user, & not Nokia's own Web browser. This, because the current browser in Nokia N8 doesn't support text wrapping once you zoom.

2. Copy paste or importing feed URLs from my Google Reader account.

cmon guys, it is useless without google reader integration.

There's already google reader integration in the default RSS Reader.
it's easy : export your OPML from google reader, then open the xml file on your Nokia. Tried on N8 by sending it thru email... N8 asked me to add the RSS subscribing list to the default RSS Reader of the phone...
So, you could do it from all RSS read which allow you to export/import OPML.

Nokia Reader should make it too, and should give us more than the default RSS Reader too

Great first attempt to start with. Though few things are missing which may be added in next versions. This is what I would like to see:

1. Import of OPML files.
2. Mark as Read/Unread Option

Great to see a good RSS reader finally come to symbian. A few comments:

- The ability to adjust text size (larger AND smaller) would be nice
- I like to limit how much data I use and don't need instant push notification. Can a setting which checks for updates (say) every hour be added?
- I like to have lots of stories in my reader, but the present reader doesn't go more than 2 hours back.
- The reader seems to default to GSM rather than wifi connectivity
- For the love of God, don't sign me up to the Mail by default

First of all. Congrats. This is the first WRT app that I've tried that doesn't suck completely.

+ The performance is very nice for a WRT app.
+ The OVI push notifications service seems to be working fine. Great to see it being used.
+ The app looks quite good (except for few things). The peeling corner in the homescreen widget when there's updates is kinda cool :)
+ The read more link is big enough to hit without trying 3 times
- Opens the Symbian browser even though default is set to Opera
- The options menu is too small and inconsistent with everything else. Please ditch the WRT menu and make your own.
- The feedback page doesn't work (on the Symbian browser) ;)

I think I'll start using this. Looking forward to new versions.

Sounds great on paper, but I can't get it to install on my N8! Downloaded, connected to my WLAN, and when it finishes installing and starts "Verifying Components", I get a "Download Error", and it doesn't install :(

Any clues on what might be going on?

The reader can't login to my nokia account. The login-screen appears again and again.

I love the app, it has a beautiful and intuitive user interface. The only real improvement I think is needed, is to make the transitions and graphics as slick, as the ovi store 2.0

Great app to start with
Few thing that will make it friendlier
1)Pinch to zoom , in order to adjust the font size
2) An actual reader , text to speech integration
3) sync interval settings
4) read more link should open feed in user selected default browser

Many of these suggestions and issues are now being discussed and addressed on the app forum: http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-reader/forum

If you have more, please submit them there for the product team and community to respond to.

Installed on my nokia n8 is all right but it consumes too RAM around 30MB of RAM it would need to bring her/it to 5Mb of RAM.

Really need image support here. I usually subscribe to image based sites like, xkcd, but its not present here. N when I subscribe to a link, only past 3 rss are updated. Please make it whole days rss. Finally, instead of opening of browser, better call a browser inside the widget itself (snaptu n gravity have their one take on this).

installed in n 8 but later I lost all my personalized homescreens . Not sure if it had something to do with the reader. Looks like it.

This is a brilliant application, but image support would be brilliant and maybe integration into google reader and other popular web based feed readers.

nokıa 5800 expres muzic neden bu uygulamayı desteklemiyor bu bir ayrımcılık değilmi? :(

i need your help guys its not installing in my c7

looks like a nice app, tried a few things with it on my N97. Installation took a long time and installed a lot of software parts/libraries I did not see before on my N97. After installation I discovered the phone had some 14Mb less on C: drive. Removal of the app did not recover all memory I previously had so I had to do that manually. So far for a nice app I perhaps did not need anyway as there seem to be other RSS reading possibilities

Hi,I'm connection error.

Plz giv support for 5800,bz big user of 5800..
