Hello all,

It has been a little while since my last post. Our team has been busy over the past few months incorporating your feedback, and preparing a brand new UI for the Nokia touch devices. I had also hinted that more people around the world would be able to download and use P&F, read on to learn more. We look forward to hearing from all of you now.

Let’s start with improvements to the user experience. We’ve fixed short of 100 bugs in network connectivity and overall stability of the client on some of our best-selling devices: N82, N95 8GB, N95, E71, E66, N81, N81 8GB, E51, 6220, 6210 Navigator, N97. Our hope is that the client will look more snappy and mature to you than its previous release, although some fixes had to be postponed. In particular: 1D barcode recognition in the shopping experience isn’t as reliable as we’d like it to be, especially on 3.1 devices; and start-up time on the 6220, 6210 Navigator is sluggish. Our R&D team is working on those issues now.

We’ve also released a client for the N97 with a brand new UI that takes advantage of the device’s touch capabilities and large screen res (see a screenshot below). Give it a try and tell us what you think. It will soon be ported to other devices of the S60 5.0 family.

Last but not least, you can download our client from anywhere in the world at pointandfind.nokia.com. We’ve re-designed the site to give P&F a more mature identity (what can I say, we’re growing up…)  There are a couple of use cases you can play with no matter where you are: a City Guide, in which you point your camera at a place you like, give it a name or type a brief comment, then press ‘tag’. Others may see your tag next time they point at this place. The 2D Barcode experience connects you instantly to information that’s embedded in the code, be it a URL, a contact (vcard), etc. Try it on this one:

This really hurts me.

Why do not you offer it for sale in OVIstore. Could be a succes. It is much cooler than some e-book reader.

Since the Audiobook player is what ties me to Nokia, i guess that when my trusty old N95 dies, it'll be time to move to another vendor.

Sad, because i've just read in the news that Nokia decided to make Symbian opensource. But what good is it if applications like Audiobook player are just terminated rather than made opensource or commercial.

As someone stated earlier, there are only two sane choices in a situation where the application maintainer runs out of ressources on a hobby project, and this hobby project has an actual user base:

1: Make the project opensource, thus allowing others to carry on developing it.

2: Go commercial, if the customer base warrants it. I respect that not all projects do.

In both cases, the user base is left with options. Not just left holding the bag.

Taking the third choice - just tucking the entire project in an archive box and leaving the user base behind - will bring nothing good for anyone.

Luckily, I've got all my audiobooks on store as mp3, so let's see what else is out there...

Sorry but my total excitement went to waste after I downloaded this new app, what a waste !

The Address field in the web bar code creator is read as P.O Box information in the E75 barcode reader. It will be more convenient if it's read as an address field in the E75.

Of course I don't talk about this pseudo-application for Windows (this is very nice example of badly designed application) but about (almost) excellent player for my Nokia :)

I'll have one sent to you ASAP :) Tomorrow probably, when I get my hands on one.

In these months that I am a user of Betalabs, I gladly share with you my ideas, my opinions (sometime I was not so kind with you) and help the others.

My license for Ovi Maps will expire in more or less a month, the door nr 1 will be well accepted..

Here we go again -  this autumn's Here and now update.

Many thanks to Here and now users for all your feedback. Based on that we were finally able to solve the nasty wrong location problem that had us puzzled for quite a while. You can read the story in the forum if you are into technical details.

Also based on your feedback, the client now checks whether Here and now was started from the browser bookmark or from the application grid. On exit it returns to the browser bookmarks only if it was started from the browser. This was supposed to be in the summer release already, but it was left out due to a human error.

This release also fixes some bugs including one that is actually only visible when there are three or more previews. Which is nice, because we have just released two new services:

• Movies listing your favourite flicks nearby (OK, it also shows the ones you do not care about)
• Restaurants showing the fine dining possibilities around you (if they happen to be in the Guide - try it and you'll know what I mean)

Download the updated Here and now and please keep the feedback coming. New developments will be based on that.

We want to understand what you do to protect yourself and how important the issue of sudden phone and data loss is to you. This brief survey is looking for the consumer view on how consumers protect themselves.

Currently Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 supports exactly 142 different device models from Nokia (over 200, if you count in all different variants). Lots of issues found by you have been incorporated into product during the development.

This is good opportunity for us in Nokia Ovi Suite team to thank you for your efforts. We’ve masses of feedback and feature suggestions from you available and we’re consolidating that feedback, what could be done in future Nokia Ovi Suite versions.

What comes to next versions of Nokia Ovi Suite? Our developers are already heavily working towards next Nokia Ovi Suite releases and our hope is, that we will get some new features and improvements available for you in coming months as new Beta releases.

We now also have a limited functionality version of Ovi Maps available for Chrome, Opera, Linux browsers and everything else. We are working to bring the full rich functionality of the plugin Ovi Maps version to all browsers in the future.

The need for speed

We have been working hard on getting Ovi Maps running quicker and smoother for everyone, and we have made some improvements in this area. We still have more work to do, but we're moving in the right direction.

Many of you have asked for S60 setup support for Ovi Mail and we’re happy to introduce it today. We just made the “Ovi Mail Setup” application available in Beta Labs for a wide range of S60 devices (see Download and Installation for supported devices).

What it is
This application allows you to sign-up for an Ovi Mail account directly from your S60 device. Or if you already have an Ovi account it will provision Ovi Mail and configure the email client on the device. And it installs a handy icon in the Installations folder for easy access to Ovi Mail.

What it isn’t
This is not an email client. You will continue using the existing email client on your device. If you’re already successfully using Ovi Mail on your device you don’t need to install this.

Webmail
We have also silently launched an update to our webmail interface. We have simplified the navigation on the left and made it more consistent from page to page. And we’re trying to keep up with the global expansion of Ovi Mail and have added 4 additional languages: Thai, Simplified Chinese, Russian and Finnish. Hi all! As many of you know, Nokia Audiobooks has been a semi-official side-project of mine, something that I created two years ago just for fun, and for the sheer love of audiobooks. Lately, however, I have grown too busy to improve and maintain the app properly, so I thought it would be fair to call it a day and officially announce the project as archived (we left it available "as is"). Thanks for all of you who were kind enough to send feedback!!

Anyway, some of my colleagues have an interesting project ongoing in a related area, with potential goodies for you in the future pipeline.
