Rough edges, but highly usable and very enjoyable.
I have been using the musicplayer occasionally to listen to audiobooks, but this application
makes it much more comfortable.
Every day I drive to and from work, which is about an hour drive, and listening to music or news radio can not always keep me from getting really bored. I have a bluetooth carkit installed, so I can use the phone as music player and now as an audiobook reader, just as used to do with my iPod, but as I have a Nokia N95 I don't need my iPod anymore.
I am now listening to my third audiobook using the Audiobooks app, and sometimes I can't wait to go to work, because I had to stop listening the day before at a really exciting point in the story.
Pro's:
- Sound quality of compressed MP3 as good as original MP3's while taking about 25-30% of the space ( 132 MB -> 36 MB ).
- Very comfortable in comparison with music player: it remembers where you stopped reading, and scrolling forward an backward works very intuitively.
- Nice touch to have the volume control mapped to the joystick (up and down navigation keys) The volume buttons on my N95 start to wear down, and are harder to reach in
the car.
- Library manager does a good job at making sure you get the whole book on your phone
It's really easy to use.
Con's:
- Pressing the red key does not put the application in the background, just like all (most) other applications, but does an exit. I made that mistake too often. You can put the application in the background by pressing the programs key, and then switch to another application, but that is more involved and not very safe whiile driving a car.
- It didn't display the chapters of the book, I guess my booktitles are much too long, and then the chapter falls off the screen. The time counts down per chapter, but that makes not a lot of sense if you can't tell which chapter you're in.
- Compressing the MP3's to AWB takes very long on my PC, my guess is that
that can be improved upon, hopefully that's on the list for the next release.
This is a great application for people travelling in cars with good carkits. Also, if you have a heavy flu, listening to an audiobook takes less energy than reading.
I am really happy with it, and I hope the next release will be even better.
