Bugreport for Nokia Music PC Client

Profile picture pauleaton Wed, 2009-03-18 00:03

Nokia Music PC Client - Licensing Pop Up "Unable to get a license for the file."

Bug Summary:
Nokia Music PC Client is unable to play "Unlimited Streaming" music.

After starting up the Nokia Music PC Client, logging in and after checking the 'My Account' menu to ensure 'Streaming:ON', I browse the online catalog successfully.
When adding a song to the playlist via the 'Play Using Unlimited Streaming' button the song adds to the 'Queue' and attempts to play. After a 30 second timeout the song in the Queue indicates the message " ! - Unable to get a license for the file. Make sure that you are connected to the internet."

Also a 'Pop Up' window titled "Licensing" appears showing an information splash page:
****************************************
" Nokia Music Store - Nokia Music on PC. Download the new Nokia Music application for PC. Now it's even easier....
Dear Music Lover,
As a Nokia Music member you already enjoy access to millions of tracks that you can download and play on your PC and mobile device.
Well, we’ve just made it even easier to get your hands on the music you want with the launch of the Nokia Music application for your PC.
Install it and you can access the Nokia Music Store, manage your downloads, transfer tracks to and from your mobile device, create the perfect playlist, and listen to your music – all in one place. Download it for free from music.nokia.com.au and install it today.
****************************************
Then I have two options:
- click on information page that takes me to Nokia music Homepage, which then informs me.. "You have the PC Client installed. I will start it for you."
- click cancel and then try add another song, or try play again. Both of which results in the same error.

No matter which song I try to play the same cycle continues. I have tried logging out and in again. Un-installed and re-installed Nokia Music PC Client. Same error.
Final note: The internet connection is fine. I am typing in this forum while testing the Nokia Music PC Client. Perhaps however the DRM server is not well.

Setup Summary:
OS: Windows XP SP3 Build 2600 (All windows updates/patches applied.)
IE Browser: 7.0.5730.13
Nokia Music PC Client: 1.2.20226.01
Nokia Music Unlimited Streaming subscription: ON (turned ON for 1 month. Re-billing just occured 16th March '09)

Regards,
Paul

Update: Chasing fault via Nokia care

Here's an update for those who may be interested in this thread, or anyone looking for help with a similar problem.:

After noting the lack of activity in this Nokia Music PC Client forum (perhaps due to the development team busy rolling out more Nokia Music stores and "Comes With Music", or the next software update ;) I decided to try following this up via another contact method.

I contacted Nokia Care via a web form.. Afterall, this is a service that I'm paying for yet sorely missing right now. Got a quick response with a couple of questions to follow up on... what version of Windows Media Player etc.

Long story short.... Built a virtual machine running earlier version Windows XP SP2 without any extra patches and no other software installed except Nokia Music PC Client. Logged in, checked my Streaming subscription was set to ON. Same errors as orginally posted.

My best guess... due to 30 second samples playing and "vault" audio downloading and playing this looks like an authentication issue. Could it be that when a song is added to the playlist via the "Unlimited Streaming" button, it tries to download asking for DRM permission and fails.

Enough speculation on my part... the job via Nokia Care is being moved along the support chain.
Perhaps this isn't a Nokia Music PC Client Bug as such... however perhaps it's a Nokia Music "Service" bug?

Fixed

Update:
Again enjoying my Nokia Music Store "Unlimited Streaming".
Thanks to Nokia Care and the 'un-named nokia music team' for their assistance .

The fix: The 'relevant department' re-licensed the Nokia Music Streaming service on my account.

Summary: Not so much a Nokia Music PC Client bug. More of a "service" issue with back end servers perhaps not talking to each other. (This is of course just my speculation.)

Suggestion: The Nokia Music PC Client could have dealt with the error in a more intelligent way. As can be read in my initial post in this thread, I was caught in a 'loop'. In addition easier access, perhaps even via the software or "account" section of the service could provide links to more easily contact Nokia care.

Thank you.
