Discussion for Ovi Maps 3.0 Beta for mobile

Sat, 2009-03-28 11:35 nikosz: Maps 3 cannot get the current position from E71 built-in GPS

After having functioned fine for some weeks, Nokia Maps 3 stopped being able to communicate with the positioning unit of my E71. In other words, I start Nokia Maps and it does not indicate my current position no matter how long I wait. In the same time I have tried launching the "GPS data" application of the phone and I was able to see that the positioning unit of the phone was providing current positioning data.

Troubleshooting steps I have already tried:
- I disabled and re-enabled positioning from within Nokia Maps (options->tools->turn positioning off/turn positioning on)
- I checked from the GPS data application in the E71 menu that the positioning unit is giving positioning data (menu->gps data->position). It is working ok.
- I run the Nokia Maps updater application from my PC but it found the Nokia Maps on my E71 to be up to date and it did not offer the possibility to re-install
- I installed Google Maps and it is showing my current position ok.
- I disabled and re-enabled different combinations of positioning methods from menu->tools->settings->general->positioning->positioning methods. My current status is all methods enabled apart from Bluetooth GPS.

When the problem occured:
- I changed the internet access point from within the maps 3 application (options->tools->internet->default access point) for several times and after a certain time the maps application was unable to indicate my current position

Any ideas on how to make the Nokia maps 3 application communicate again with the positioning system of my E71 phone?

Sun, 2009-03-29 14:47 IMAGINARY.FRIEND: Positioning Server?

Something like that happened to me when I changed my position server t o supl.nokia.com.

The speed of locking the internal GPS improved (from 3-30 minuted to a few seconds) BUT the exact situation you describe started happening when I tried to use my external LD-3W. I would get the green bars at no time, but the red dot would never appear.

check out your server address (tools, settings, general, positioning, positioning server)

My default server was h-slp.mnc007.mcc240.pub.3gppnetwork.org (by TOMTOM?). I need to switch back to this whenever I want to use LD-3W.

Fri, 2009-04-03 02:42 nikosz: the positioning is not the issue

In this case the positioning server has been supl.nokia.com all the time

The positioning subsystem of this E71 phone does not have a problem in resolving my position's coordinates. I can see my current position by launching any of the following 3 programs:
> the "GPS Data" applet that comes pre-installed with the phone
> Garmin MobileXT navigation program
> Google Maps

The problem I request assistance with is that the Nokia Maps 3 application stopped communicating with the positioning subsystem of the E71. The GPS status bar stays 100% grey. Or if I "Turn positioning off" and then "On" again the GPS status bar gets Red-Grey-Red-Grey-Red and stays like that forever. At the same time I can launch the GPS Data applet and get my current coordinates in about 1 minute.

Any Nokia rep in the forum? is there a way to "pair" the Nokia Maps 3 program with the E71 positioning subsystem?

Sat, 2009-04-04 17:33 nikosz: one failed attempt to fix the problem

I made one more attempt to restore the communication between Maps 3 and the positioning unit of my E71.

I reverted to Maps 2. Functionality was restored (Maps 2 could display my current position). Then I upgraded again to Maps 3. Maps could not anymore read the current position from the positioning unit.

Result: Nokia Map 2 were talking to the positioning subsystem and showing my current position on the map. Then I upgraded again to Maps 3 and the program was not not able to get any input from the GPS built in the E71.

Any suggestions from the Maps 3 development team?

Mon, 2009-04-06 08:04 SexyAntonio: Maps 3 cannot get the current position from N95 built-in GPS

Hello, I have the same problem! With me Nokia Mpas 3.0 also worked until I tried to synchronize with Ovi - then the connectin to the internal GPS receiver was permanently lost. I also have no problem using the internal GPS with any other navigation software. Just like you I switched to the older version 2.0 and the problem disappeared. Also in Maps 3.0 I cannot search addresses (I always receice "not found" while in 2.0 it works fine for me).
Well, it seems that...beta is beta! :-)

Thu, 2009-06-11 10:00 ostmovid: I experience the exact

I experience the exact problem as nikosz . I would very much like the betateam comment on the issue,*and* if any sort of mitigation for this problem exists. Obvious going to 2.0 ( which as nikosz and I confirm are still working) and back to 3.0 again, does not solve the problem.

This is supposed to be a betaforum , and we are of cource willing to take the "pain" any beta are prone to cause :-) but a little feedback from the developers from time to time would enhance our perception of their products a great deal.

Sun, 2009-06-14 21:27 nikosz: bug still here - troubleshooting assistance offered

I upgraded from Maps 2 to the new version of Maps 3.01(8) on my E71.

Depending on the sequence I used to upgrade I arrived to 2 different situations:
> either Maps 3 runs but does not get the current coordinates from the positioning subsystem of the phone or
> Maps 3 does not start at all

I also managed to get Maps 3 to run and show the current position by resetting the phone settings by following this procedure:
-backup phone
-reset phone by typing *#7370#
-reinstall current firmware (version 210.21.006)
-restore backup except for "settings"
Now Maps 3 is working but I need to personalise my phone from scratch

If anybody from Nokia is interested, I have a backup file with the settings that allow Maps 3 to show the current positioning and another one with the settings that do not.

Tue, 2009-06-16 00:57 hookoo: Same problem

I also have the same problem with my E71. I upgraded Maps 3 to latest beta and after upgrade process everyting was working fine for sometime. When I left home for a weekend trip the maps 3 wasn't working anymore :( I just wonder how much the guys at betalabs did testing work with the latest beta version before the release because it seems that this is pretty common problem...

I even bought license for safety cameras to be able to test this new function so it was a big disappointment to notice that the maps didn't work at all on my trip. Maybe it would be good idea to give the people who are doing testing work for Nokia for free some free licenses...

Tue, 2009-06-16 12:15 ish68: N95 8Gb GPS delays

Hi,

I have noticed where in the previous beta and NM2 the GPS location was found normally within 10-30 Seconds, but at the moment it's taking anywhere between 30 Seconds and 5 minutes.

There was no problem that I know of in the previous beta and this should not have been tampered with. It looks like the maps team are causing themselves problems, which to be honset they are doing a good job with OM3 apart from communicaing with forum members.

Tue, 2009-06-16 19:43 navio1973: about the time for the first fix

I know about the time for the first fix depend of several things and a pair are:
If you use frequently the GPS it will be faster because it have not to find the position of satellite from zero.
if you turn on in a distance more 1000km of the last position, it will need more time to make the first fix.
you could check with gps data if the phone need always a lot of time, but you have to do it before that it have fixed on OM3

Wed, 2009-06-17 15:22 hookoo: Waiting the fix

In my case it didn't get the fix at all. I waited for about 15 minutes, then I restarted maps/phone couple of times and tried waiting a couple of minutes again... hope they'll release a new beta soon. It would be also nice to know if somebody at Nokia actually reads this forum and passes the information to the developers.

Wed, 2009-06-17 18:18 mbrett: @hookoo:: Have you tried

Have you tried the following:
Phone Main Menu / Tools / Connectivity / GPS Data.

Check your fix here. Do you get one? (If the answer is no then you have a separate GPS issue to Maps)

If yes. When you get the fix open Maps and check for a fix.

To answer your other question. Yes the Maps developement team do read and respond to this forum. Kee is the man with a plan.

Wed, 2009-06-17 18:31 hookoo: Yep

Yes, GPS data, Sports Tracker and Race Chrono are showing the position when Maps 3 is not. As additional info for Kee and other guys at maps team: the fix was working just fine in the previous beta :)

Edit: I think that Kee should make a sticky thread for every beta version where are listed all the known issues. It could be locked thread so that all the discussion related to problems could be in separate threads.

Wed, 2009-06-17 20:56 cmunic8r99: clarification

I'm about to install this on my E71, but have a couple of questions regarding this problem before i do:

1. Is this problem on the E71 or E71x? (i'm using an E71)

2. are you having this problem with the most current release of Maps 3.0 Or an earlier release?

3. If you are having this problem still, which firmware version does your E71(or E71x) have installed?

Wed, 2009-06-17 22:27 hookoo: Version

I'm having regular E71 and the firmware version is latest (210.21.006). Maps is also the latest beta version. Like I said the previous beta version was working on my phone like it should.

I would recommend not to install this latest beta to E71 if you really need a navigator for a trip or something important. At least I would wait and see if somebody could confirm that this problem is not concerning every E71 out there.

Mon, 2009-06-22 20:09 hookoo: Disappointed

I have to say that I'm really disappointed to Nokia Maps team. Still no word about this problem. It would be nice to hear if the team has already located the error from the code or if this problem is only caused by unsuccessful installation process or something like that. It would really be nice to hear that people having this problem could know if they should go back to maps 2 to be able to navigate again or if there's some solution to get this version of maps 3 working.

Sat, 2009-06-27 16:55 nvanegas: same problem on N95

hi, I have the same problem... maps starts on the last location but does not pick the current. If I start google maps and then go back to maps, then set any location and press "walk to..." it will then pick my current position. Hope they will solve it. Nelson.

Sat, 2009-06-27 20:31 nikosz: different problem

nvanegas, it seems the problem you are facing is a different one. In our case Maps 3 does not manage to get the coordinates from the positioning subsystem at all. The problem is caused by some setting that stays in place even when Maps 3 is removed but it does not affect Maps 2. It is probable that our problem came to be when we were fiddling with the Internet access settings of Maps 3. The settings that trigger the problem are among these backed up and restored by the Nokia back-up application of the Nokia PC Suite; this means that the problem can be easily reproduced; I have offered such a back-up set to Nokia via this forum but so far nobody has bothered to request it.

The latest maps 3 beta works fine with an E71x. It is always very slow to orient initially as I don't have a data plan.

Fri, 2009-07-03 16:17 nikosz: issue resolved

I installed the new firmware for the E71 - version 300.21.012 - and the new production level Maps 3 - depending on when you look it is either version 3.01 (17) or 3.01.09w26b02 - and the two related outstanding issues were resolved:

Maps goes smoothly online/offline as requested by the user
Maps gets the current position coordinates from the GPS unit of the phone

Thanks Nokia Maps Team for resolving the issue. However please note that It would have been more pleasant if you had addressed our frustration earlier by informing us that you were on top of things and that you were actually looking into the matter.

I also installed new FW (300.21.012) and new Ovi Maps (3.01.09w26b02) based on Nikosz experiences.

Unfortunately my E71 does still not get GPS position after upgrades. This is pretty frustrating..

Cannot see anywhere on the Maps3.0 where i should ask for help / report the problem, what would a 'normal' consumer do ?...

At present there is no real form of feedback for Maps 3 on the Nokia Maps website. Hopefully this will be sorted soon.

Your best options are to contact Nokia care, post on here and/or post on the nokia discussion forums (http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/discussions/board?board.id=navigation).

Sat, 2009-07-11 20:13 nvanegas: Definitely not starting the GPS on my N95

HI, Maps on my N95 does not start the GPS... google maps has no problem picking up the position. When one looks at connections --> GPS it claims to be waiting for satellites while actually has 5 strong signals. The problem might be intermitent since a week ago it did read the GPS signal and located it in the map but always the maps app. would suddenly start working after pressing "walk to" or some directions...
