Flaging a Topic

Hello Iikka, how are you.
Before i can speak further on about the flagging feature i would like to hear your view on it and a few questions to go with it.

What is the meaning of flagging? Whats the main purpose? What is deemed necessary to flag a topic? How much further on the back end is this followed through? Are you the only one that handles flagged topics?

In general whats it about to you and how do you use/react with it?

Ill speak more on it after i hear your reply
Thx Iika

Thanks for reminding me

Thanks for reminding me about this.

So far we haven't had any real flagged items. The function is supposed to be used for bringing something to the admin's attention (currently just me). Honestly speaking, I have forgotten to follow the list again for a couple of days and just saw there was something there I need to act on.

You can use common sense to flag a topic. When a discussion is getting out of hand, that's a good reason. Being offensive or using foul language are also good reasons.

Flagged items pop up in a list in the back end. After we notice them, we use our common sense, compare the comments to our terms & conditions and decide what to do with them. Today was the first real case and as a result, after deleting the offensive comments, I contacted the user in question and asked the user to behave a bit better.

I had in mind along the lines

I had in mind along the lines of flagging topics and comments that were out of place.
In some way of moderating the board but leaving the final call on you.

Im not sure how much i can explain it, so ill do a test run from the ovi mail board and you will see the items i have flagged with my comments and see where that leads.

P.S Making the Forum more smooth.

Thanks, this is absolutely

Thanks, this is absolutely very welcome indeed!

Sadly, I don't have time to follow every comment made on the forum, so this kind of community support is very welcome indeed.

Thx for the feedback

Im very aware that it is very time consuming to be in your position to monitor the board and follow every comment, hence i went along with questions for an idea i have that may evolve in a beneficial method for decreasing noise.

First up i first mentioned i will leave it to you how to handle the topics and comments so i left quick comments to help make you decisions quicker. As i said i do not make the final call and is left at your discretion, but i hoped it would have been in a more efficient matter(not that i question your decision) but for example some topics and comments i left flagged could have been merged into one topic rather than you make the comment where to follow the topic(to save your self time), also why not delete some of the out of place topics.

Again I say all this because i guess we can say its a trial method.

Basically i dont not want you to be bothered(wasting time) to leaving comments of direction.

Whats your feedback? We can do some more trials, and try various methods.

My Idea

So say somehow we use the flagging feature(rather than what you have suggested its main purpose) to evolve & further enhance the board moderating to reduce noise with community involvement but in a form that is not time consuming at your cost with a potential benefit.

We dont want you wasting time where the outcome does not produce results.
Im saying devise a form of communication that will cost you the least amount of time yet yield high results.

Another test run? Select a topic.

Sorry, have forgotten to continue this thread

All the flagged items that I see, I will go trough and very often I take action. The action is quite often simple unpublishing. More rarely I just delete them altogether. In any case, you're most welcome to use the flagging feature for this kind of purposes. I am afraid, I'm a bit too spread out to handle this on a larger scale. Therefore, we should think of a good way how to
1) make the flagging easy and quick for users, so it would be used more often
2) provide an easy mass-unpublish functionality for the application owners or something that would make it easier for one person to manage larger amounts of posts with this information at once.

I just noticed your post

I just noticed your post here http://betalabs.nokia.com/forum/topic/2732
So how do you want to continue discussion?
Remember i created this one for trial basis.

Reply to #1
Yes this is what i had in mind to set a system up for community users to use(after we figure out how it should work then inform the community).

Reply to #2
I wish this is possible for them to have the time and makes better sense. Or have them ask a trusted community member(s) to help.
Just occurred to me they can save time for both parties by using the flag system themselves. So on their part leave a quick flag, and taken care of on the other end.

Update: Oh yes my initial taught was how would this weigh over for you, more productive or more time consuming.

Let's do like you suggested

Let's do like you suggested previously for now, so if you are willing to go trough the trouble of, when seeing a problematic post/thread, using the flagging feature to let me know. I'll try to identify different moderation cases.
Let's continue this topic in the new discussion I have created to see if we can plan the proper tools for this to function in a community driven way.
Even this way of users flagging and me moderating, it will result in a bit more time invested from my part, but a LOT cleaner forum, so I believe it's worth it.
