Suggestion for Nokia Step Counter

Wed, 2009-04-08 12:46 mrn1984cam: PC Integration

I think the main thing that should be improved is integration with PC applications. I think the ideal solution would be through an option in Lifeblog to add a file for every day with step data.

Im not sure if step counter data is included when doing a backup (possibly within user files), but if not this would also be good. I wouldn't like to lose nearly a year, and counting, of step counter data.

I think there would be real commercial benefits to this, as when upgrading people would be more encouraged to get another Nokia that could support step counter if they knew they could keep their old data, and continue to add to it, rather than losing it all with their old phone.

A Step Counter is embedded within Nokia Sports Tracker v2.06 which may give you some of what you wish for.

Wed, 2009-04-08 16:37 speedgrapher: step counter v/s sportstracker

@mbrett - while this is true that sportstracker 2.06 brings the step counter back to life, the step counting feature in sportstracker is quite different from the one in the standalone step counter : the latter runs permanently, all day long, so you can also have an idea on how many steps you've made some day, and compare by weeks, days, etc. For having the same functionality, and being able to use only the sports tracker program, it would need to be able to run a "overall" step counter and also have a way to track your progress separately with specialized graphs as the current step counter does. -- In short, it'd be great to havbe both integrated for devices w/ an accelerometerm, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it.

As for the data, it is in C:\Data\StepCounter and in E:\StepCounter, though I don't really know what format is that.

@ Speedgrapher: Appolgies. You are very correct. For that useage it would not work.

Wed, 2009-04-08 19:38 mrn1984cam: Thanks for your comments

Thanks for your comments both. I agree with you both - the integration and sharing possibilities of Sportstracker are good, and the app itself is great for when I am doing some specific exercise, but its just not designed for everyday allday use. I can't see myself starting a new workout everytime I walk from my office to the car etc!

And though I like Sportstracker, its nothing like as easy to use as Lifeblog when you want to move data off the phone, hence my preference for integrating Step Counter with Lifeblog.

Not sure if this answers your question or not.

Mon, 2009-05-04 08:46 navio1973: Errata corrige: it is possible export in csv

It is possible to export and how to do it is written here: http://betalabs.nokia.com/forum/topic/620

On my memory card there is the folder "Step counter" with folder called YYYYMM with the dat files that mbrett wrote but they are not in a readable format, I mean if you want open it with notepad, there nothing to read, only a big quantity of symbols.

I think that if I want copy my data on another phone it is enough copy this folder

Thu, 2009-04-30 15:52 speedgrapher: .dat files contents

I'm sorry to tell, ".dat" can mean anything, and is the usual file extension one ends up using when the output format is something with no other standard structure.

If someone at nokia could tell what's the internal file structure maybe one could make some small java or python (which I don't know but for the name) utility to extract them to other formats.
CSV is another option - granted.

Checked the Export from Step Counter Diary and it appears to work. Exporting to .csv, which can be imported to Excel and a number of other PC apps.

Fri, 2009-06-19 10:47 Deeko76: Would it be possible to have

Would it be possible to have an option to send send the csv export online via a schedule? for example via ftp a few times a day? Currently looking at an HCI project that eliminates any sort of PC connection for usability reasons, far better for the end user to be able to send their step data to a web service with a simple button click on the phone.

Look forward to any response.
