Plug-in problem with IE 8

Hello, I had been using ovi.com with the maps plug-in on my PC, but had to wipe my PC as it crashed totally, due to power failure. I re-installed everything and allowed IE 8 to install through windows updates and could not get the ovi plug-in to install under any conditions, I was not even seeing a yellow bar to install it. After a week, I thought to remove IE 8 and to try and install the plug-in in remaining IE version which was 6 and it worked first time. Not sure if this is Ovi or IE 8, but later I will try and upgrade to IE 8 again and see if the plug-in still works.. Will keep you informed. Ish68 - UK - Vodofone - N95 8Gb - (20.0.016)

Plug-in update

hello again,

I have re-installed IE 8 and the plug-in now works and I can use ovi maps on ovi.com.

Hope this helps someone either from the ovi team or another user.

Plug-in problem still exist

I had to uninstall IE8 to install the new NM3 plug-in and then re-install IE8 again. IE8 just will not allow you to install the plug-in and the download link is overwritten by the link for the mobile software link, but after uninstalling it, all the links are displayed correctly. It would be a good idea for ovi to check the plug-in with different versions of browsers.

This works Lefu

Hi Lefu and anyone else who is having problems with IE8 Plug-in,

I've been getting the problem with not being able to uinstall NM3 plug-in's since using the BETA version of IE8. I use the method below:

Goto START, CONTROL PANEL and ADD/Remove programs. Select 'Internet Explorer 8' and click remove and answer the questions during removal. I know my XP system reverts back to IE6 and other goto IE7, but seems to work the same.

Once uninstalled go back to ovi maps and it should ask if you would like to install the plug-in. Install the plug-in and then reinstall IE8 and all should work again with the new plug-in.

I have had other problems with plug-in's with IE8 and had to do the same, so not sure if this is a problem with the ovi maps plug-in or with IE8. As you will see from above this has been passed to a team leader and I will contact microsoft now and if I receive a reply, I will add the information here!

NOTE: I exported all my favourites from IE8 before uninstalling (using FILE, IMPORT/EXPORT, just in-case, but they where fine (better be safe than sorry)

Thanks,

Cant install plugin with IE8

I've read the above comments, but I refuse to uninstall IE8 because I like it. OVI should iron out this bug without us having to uninstall and reinstall. Grrrrrrrrrr.............

This is still and issue with the new API.

When you click on the download button on the site using IE8 nothing happens. Infact the address displayed at the base of the screen when you hove over the button is the same as the address you are already on.

How to install browser plugin on IE8

Hi

I figured out how to install the plugin on IE8. Firsly you have to do it manually and therefore you will have to edit the registry. This HAS TO BE DONE CAREFULLY since the registry is a sensitive part of the operating system which you better don't mess with. However here you have the instructions according to what I did. I cannot guarantee that this will work for you... so, perhaps some Nokia guys will figure out from this why the plugin doesn't install properly on IE8 even though it works fine. So, do this at your own risk :-(

1. download the plugin from http://static.s2g.gate5.de/ovi_maps/OviMaps_2.0.20.2.cab
2. decompress the cab file and you will obtain two files: one .dll and one .inf
3. from the .inf file use the regedit utility to insert into the registry the two lines at the end of the .inf file. If you don't know what this is then you'd better find some one who knows to do it for you.
4. Place the .dll file in the plugins directory of the IE installation and register the .dll file executing "regsvr32 PATH_TO_THE_.dll" then again only do this if you are sure of what you are doing.
5. reboot and start IE and try the ovi maps site. It should work... it did for me.

Cheers and good luck!

Windows Registry Update Script for XP-

Copy the below script into a text editor like notepad and save the file with .reg extension. Then, you can run the script (DOUBLE CLICK ON THE FILE) to add the entries into the registry. REGISTRY UPDATES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK. DON'T COME BACK WITH YOUR PROBLEMS.

Any Solution yet?

Besides Registry editing and running an Update script, has there been a solution to this problem without an uninstall of IE8?

@petersen200: Check add/remove programs too

From previous Nokia posts on this you need to check "add/remove programs" too and uninstall anything that refers to nokia maps in there (not Nokia Map Loader or Nokia Map Updater though). Then try downloading and installing the add-on again.

You may need to remove the

You may need to remove the plugin via IE8 option, it should be located in something called "instruments" or something like this and then "plugins management", then close the browser, restart it and try again.

IE8 will not start plugin installation

I can't get IE8 to start the plugin installation. No "yellow bar" or install dialog ever starts up. Tried even to set the site as a trusted site - didn't help.

This is with Win7RC, IE 8.0.7100.0.
