Discussion for Nokia Messaging for S60 5th Edition

Sat, 2009-05-09 15:09 mbrett: @davisfields: Slightly off subject (Nokia Messaging (non-5th Ed)

Hi Davis,

Is it still possible to contact yourself and the dev team re: issues with Nokia Messaging (non-5th Edition) via the email you mentioned in the Graduation blog as I sent an email to this email over a week ago and have seen no response even to aknowledge receipt. I realise you guys are very busy with development of the 5th edition version. I contacted Nokia Support at one point but notice a destinct lack of knowledge or unstanding from the member of the support team I received a reply from. This is why I then contact yourselves instead. I have now uninstalled and re-installed over 20 times since I started using the latest version of Nokia Messaging (downloaded whilst logged into the email.nokia.com website). Every few days I seem to loose the "@" symbol when a new email is received. Whe this occurs the only way that I can regain the "@" symbol email notification is to uninstall and re-install the nokia email / messaging software. Sometimes when installing the application adds mailboxes to the list in the defaiult messaging app and sometimes it doesn't. Which is correct? For me to do as clean an install as possible which files / folders would I need to look for via Active file in the hidden folders on my N95 8Gb to remove all traces of email info from Nokia Email/Messaging and the default Messaging app before re-install. The only thing I haven't tried is a factory reset or re-blast of the latest firmware and full software re-insatll on my phone as I class this as a somewhat extreme step to take. It ould take me a number of hours to return my phone to its present setup.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I realise this is posted in the wrong thread as the non 5th Ed version of Nokia Messaging has alrady graduated, but I beleived this was teh best forum fo me to post and have it seen by yourself. I post this directly to yourself as I beleive you to be a very helpful poster witihin the Nokia Betalabs Developer Community.

Thanks you for any help or advice in advance,

Sorry if I'm in the wrong thread, but this one is the best I could find so far.
I own an N82 S60 FP1. Is it ever possible to upgrade to a higher Feature Pack version?

The answer is no. You can only run the relevant feature pack version on your phone. The only way to use a different feature pack version is to use a different feature pack phone.

Mon, 2009-05-11 21:13 davisfields: This is not the place to put

This is not the place to put this feedback, but I will try to help you out. We have thousands of users on the N95 and this is not logged but ('@" sign disappearing). I totally understand your reluctance to update the firmware, but, unfortunately, that is the next step to take in the troubleshooting process after uninstalling/reinstalling the application.

Mon, 2009-05-11 21:55 mbrett: @davisfields You may have misunderstood me

Davis, I beleive you may have misunderstood. I already have the latest version of firmware available for N95 8Gb. I have no reluctance to upgrade my firmware, but thud issue is manifesting with the latest version of firmware.

If you can advise me of a better or more correct route of contact with yourselves I will be happy to take it. As I posted I have already tried Nokia Customer Support and e-mailing the address you referenced when you posted the Graduation blog on the betalabs site.

Tue, 2009-05-12 01:49 davisfields: Sorry I didn't read that

Sorry I didn't read that correctly the first time. I didn't read you were already on the latest firmware.

That being said, this is not a known bug for the N95. The only other mentions I could find on the internet:

http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=m...

http://betalabs.nokia.com/forum/topic/1897

are also from you. I don't want to tell you to wipe the device and reinstall everything, but it sounds like there's some conflict on your device. I am sorry you are having this problem though, and I have logged this as an something for us to explore.

Tue, 2009-05-12 04:38 snowy: Davis ive also experienced

Davis ive also experienced this in the past while i was using an n95-1 if thats of any concern.
My assumption this is the case for fp1 clients, and a VERY rare case on fp2 devices(n85 my case).

Oh just read over the page again. My case was the "@" would appear and reappear at different intervals, but was never needed to remove the client.

Tried switching to System SEVEN and haven't had @ symbol failure. I accept that it has only been running for c. 1 week so far and I haven't done any major installing since, but this may point to it being an app and not phone issue.

What are your views?

Wed, 2009-05-13 08:04 mbrett: @Snowy: The reason I point more towards the app

The reason I point more towards the app is that a thiord party app (System SEVEN) has managed to display the "@" symbol every time without fail even after trying some installing of other apps yesterday. Therefor my assumption would be that repeated dsiplay of the "@" symbol must be possible for S60 Veriosn 3 FP1 phones. I accept that System SEVEN may be achceiving the end result in a different way, but they are both using the inbuilt firmware based "@" symbol new email identification feature if the phone.

Observations:

When "@" symbol appears, when I open a mailbox and view/delete a mail the "@" symbol disapears although I have mail in other mailboxes. When I delete the first message in the next mailbox the "@" symbol re-appears until I have viewed/deleted all messages in that mailbox. Then when I go to my next mailbox the "@" symbol re-appears after I have viewed/deleted the first mail and disappears when all mails are marked read or deleted.

This occurs every time when the "@" symbol appears.

I looked at switching to System SEVEN as the "@" symbol appears every time, but the power drain is excessive. Too much when I use my phone for sports tracking aswell.

Looking into this has left me with a question. How do you sync when "Send and Receive" is not set to "Soonest"? Other Push Mail providers use SMS push in this instance, but I have not noticed the SMS messages when using Nokia Messaging. I understand if you do not wish to discuss this as the information on the system of operation of Nokia Messaging is not discussed on the website.

Sometimes when I install Nokia Messaging it creates mailboxes in the default messaging app and other times it doesn't. Which is correct?

I always use the sms link with the text string after it (NB// this is now the only SMS link I'm sent rather than the old system of sending two).

Tue, 2009-05-19 12:23 mbrett: @davisfields: May have found the issue.

I may have found the issue, after quite a while of trying different things. When you install System SEVEN (push email BETA client) onto the N95 8Gb and you have the location ofr messages set in the default messaging app. set to Mass Storage (non phone memeory) the System SEVEN informs you that it will not work unless the message save location is set to "phone memory".

This reason I explain this is that it got me wondering if this was the same for email.nokia.com Nokia Messaging. I have always kept my save location to "mass storage" as this means that I can, if needs be, do a firmware update or factory reset without loosing all of my messages. I have now changed it back to "phone memory" and removed and re-insatlled email.nokia.com Nokia Messaging and so far it has kept displaying the "@" symbol when new emails arrive.

I am still noting that if you clear one mailbox of unread mail the icon disapears still even though you have unread mail in other mailboxes. It reappears if you then read or delete an email from another mailbox that initially contains more than one email, but whill disapear when this mailbox no longer contains unread mail. This has always happend with the built in messaging app though so I can live with this, although it would be nice if this worked better. I accept that that issue is more likely frimware and unsolveable by yourselves.

Tue, 2009-06-02 15:49 davisfields: You can only store the

You can only store the messages with Nokia Messaging inside the main memory - if you think that sounds bad, remember that we only store the first 2,000 characters of each email, so even if you have hundreds of emails, it should only take up a small amount of space. I'm not sure how you switched that to mass storage.

Tue, 2009-06-02 16:39 mbrett: @davisfields: Further Explanation

I may not have explained myself well enough.

The default messaging app (provide in the N95 8Gb firmware) provides the option within:

"Options" / "Settings" / "Other "/ "Memory in use"

which is selectable between "Phone Memory" and "Mass Memory"

When trying "System SEVEN" the application would not set-up unless I set the "Memory in use" to "Phone Memory". The setup informed me this possible due to an issue with message storage on the "Mass Memory".

I was asking if the cause of the instability of email.nokia.com Nokia Messaging (download) was that I had the setting in the default Messaging app (provide in the N95 8Gb firmware) set to "Mass Memory".

It is interesting however that what I beleive you are saying is that the email.nokia.com Messaging app operates independantly of the default Messaging app and would be unaffected by the setting in the default app.

With regards to another question I have asked:
Sometimes when I have clean installed email.noklia.com Nokia Messaging it has created duplicates of it's mailboxes in the default messaging app. Other time it has not. Which should it be doing?

Since my last post the "@" symbol has dissapeared again.

I have returned to using the default Messaging app for email and the "@" symbol appears every time. As I have doe a factory reset and still ahev the "@" symbol issue when using email.nokia.com Nokia Messaging I am still of the opinion that it is an App issue and not a phone issue. The "@" symbol displays fine with the default Messaging app and "System SEVEN" 3rd party app.

Have you any further ideas. You will have seen a discussion I started within Nokia Discussions with regard to this issue and some suggestions for future releases.

Regards
