Discussion for Mobile Web Server

Fri, 2009-06-26 10:25 NeBlackCat: Really cool that this can be done, but what is it *really* useful for?

I share everyone else's opinion that MWS is really cool in the sense that it's interesting to see a full web server can be run on a mobile device, and it's very cleverly done.

But to be quite honest I'm struggling to see what it's genuinely practically useful for, on a device that's supposed to be with me and directly used by me, and given that there are (it seems to me) already other and better ways of doing the things one might want to do indirectly through a PC, and practical constraints of speed, battery life and cost when accessing a server on a remote device.

Can someone enlighten me? I don't want to seem down on this, I want to understand what's probably going over my head.

well, this is a 1M$ question as generally but I think it is something to do with dynamic information pull from device i.e. you can ask some picture which has not been taken or you can say it is possible to make one stop shop service for lazy users who don't like to have separate service for IM,Blog, chat picture sharing especially like family connection where you like to share only with your closest persons and are somewhat feeling that you don't want to upload them to somewhere , that's my feeling

The MWS can be useful for the casual web user in a number of ways
- one can use the MWS as a content management portal for their mobile phone (PIM, blog, and multimedia data are easily managable from any device with a browser)
- its a sold platform to develop applications that web servers can be famous for
- the location-based aspect of the MWS can be used for ??? (can't give away my secret just yet)

After that, this is just something that is more or less better for those who are more centered with the idea of being their own data cloud in terms of web and mobile experiences, than what would seem to be the case for others. Also, because of how the MWS is built, the ability for it to extend into, or pull information from other applications and web services makes this a nice building block for the kind of internet that's not limited to PC or static interfaces only.

Sat, 2009-08-01 03:39 Toughlikeboots: Imagine that the sky is the only limit

First of all you need to understand what’s revolutionary about this. It isn’t really the Web server itself, because that‘s just a piece of software. The really great thing about this is that they found a way of porting HTTP traffic towards mobile devices, in this case your Nokia phone. In the past you could browse the Web from your phone and now you can browse your phone from the Web. To learn more about how this has been put together please refer to this paper provided by some of the folks at Nokia Research Center: Providing HTTP Access to Web Servers Running on Mobile Phones

Secondly, I think the key word here is “imagination”. Without imagination there’s absolutely no use for it what so ever. I guess you could say that about most of the objects around us. Take for instance some of our most common objects; a radio is great if you like to listen to music! But what if you don’t? A car is nice to drive! Then what? People with imagination would come up with dozens of ways to use a radio or a car. Some would even think of combing the two, such as driving around in a car listening to the radio. Thus car radios. How about that?

The Web server itself is the least of concerns when imagining what use we could have for MWS or rather the piece of technology that it represents. Also, try not to go blind on cost and performance. It isn’t half as significant as you might think. In the treadmill of technology, things will get both cheaper and faster. After all, Isn’t it how it always has been?

The way to go about it is to ask different categories of people to come up with ideas on; what NOT to use chopsticks for. Then challange the results and discover that chopsticks could actually be quite usefull for other things than eating. Trust me; you’ll have plenty of ideas, enough to start off more than a few enterprises.

So, just use your imagination.
