Suggestion for Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0

Install extra Languages using NSU

A great addition would be the ability to install extra language Packs for both Menus and Writing language using the integrated Nokia Software Updater.

Before the update the NSU should ask what language we want to install the firmware or give us the ability to install language packs.

There is a very hot discussion taking place regarding this issue on the official Nokia Discussion Forums here:
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=s...

For example now I have the Nokia N97 NAM which contains English, French, Spanish etc. but my languages of Interest are English and Greek. So currently French and Spanish not only are worthless to me, but I do not have the option to Install/use Greek on my devices at all!

That means no Greek menus (not that I personally care much of) but most importantly no Greek Language Input. So I cannot reply in Greek letters to my Greek emails, same for SMS/MMS, I cannot create a contact using Greek letters, I cannot navigate my Greek Albums in Music anything related or I cannot reply using Greek to Internet Forums, Blogs etc..

I hope you are getting the huge problem created here.

Again Greek is an example according to my personal needs, other may need something else from French to Russian, to Chinese Japanese.

We should have the Option to Install Language Packs no matter what Nokia regional phone we have.

In the end is nothing hard to do. Nokia has all the Languages ready and organized by product codes. Just give us access to them and stop limit Language Packs to Product Codes.

Please make it happen..

not just that, Download! lacks the language options once existed

My E65 was at Japan for about a year and when it came back, I checked the Download! menu for new stuff shipped. I noticed it lacks significant amount of themes, features once existed.

I thought it is happening because of old firmware, spent significant hassle to update firmware (I don't have PC) and when I checked Download! again, it lost even more features.

The speech languages especially are the number 1 missing thing. It had a lot of speech options even including additional english voices.

However, such a thing would

However, such a thing would encourage importation of phones, which would create complexities in terms of warranties and increase the chance of fraud by encouraging grey market.

scaevus I do not think this

scaevus

I do not think this is the case. If somebody want to import a phone he is going to do it anyway. Anything is only two clicks away thanks to the Internet, plus there many unofficial and risky ways to put the language of your preference to the Nokia phone.

This problem is very serious, I am currently in NY a city really based on immigrants, Nokia just launched the N97 here and the device became instantly a hit!

Every single person I know with N97 has this complain. They want to add another language along with English. Is unbelievable how big the request is. Greeks want to add Greek, Japanese wants to add Japanese, Russians want to add Russian and so on.

Two of the them gave the N97 back and got the iPhone only because Apple is allowing to install additional languages.

In the end of the day it is a shame if your $700 smartphone cannot reply on an email in your language of preference, especially if we use this device to deal with business then the problem becomes even bigger.

The ability to install extra languages on our phones must come as soon as possible.
I am sure Nokia and the rest of the development team here will address this major issue, the question is when?

I need to install my home country Language Pack !!!

I just received my N97 (White), It is a lovely phone but lacks the feature to install additional Language packs !!! Nokia has succeeded to be one of the first phone manufacturers to support Multi Language Message Reading (This was 4 years ago, as Nokia was the only phone to receive Arabic messages from my home country (I live in the US) ! I was surprised to find the new Iphone 3.0 OS to support 40 Languages (Reading and Writing) !!! and honestly I regret that I didn't checked the N97 Language issue !

I think its Nokias turn to be the Leader again and offer a Language pack installation (Reading and Writing) for all Languages .

As a loyal Nokia user, I suggest doing it through thr OVI suite in a similar way as the Maps downloads ! You can add a Language Tab with all supported Languages in the World and the user should download any language pack he needs (I think its very easy to do it especially for Touch screen phones as it is very easy to add new keyboards ! for my N97, you can add the Full Qwerty Virtual Keyboard that was available on the pre production n97)

Please Nokia do it, I am having problems sending messages to my parents in my home country while my brother is using the new iphone to read and write Arabic messages flawlessly.

As you know here it is a multinational and multicultural environment !

Greatly Disappointed with N97

I live in US and travel frequently to Asia (like China and Japan).
As a loyal Nokia user, I pre-ordered N97 during its first launch.
I am very annoyed and frustrated with the language issue that N97 has.

None of the emails and sms i received in Asia regions work. All characters are in square symbols.

Nokia folks, I really do not see how your "CONNECTING PEOPLE" slogan works here!
We urge you to release language packs.
HTC, Iphone and Blackberry all support multi-languages.

Refuse to buy a new Nokia NAM until language packs are released

I have been a satisfied Nokia user for several years. Applications for symbian were plentiful and my phone could do what no other phone in the US market at the time could do. Nokia was light years ahead of anything any competitor offered, at least on the S60 system.

That is not longer the case. The iphone, blackberry and two aspiring competitors (google android and palm) are releasing competitive smartphones as well. While Nokia still has some advantages, language support is a major barrier for multilingual users. In fact the iphone certainly supports more languages than any single phone Nokia has ever released.

For me that was never a problem because I use two languages (English and Greek) and the greek firmware of phones released in the past (yes illegally but only because of nokia's stubbornness) could be installed on phones sold here in the US.... Yes this voided the warranty, but who cared. I got the phone I wanted and needed in the country I reside in (of course suffered the consequences as well when it came to return the phone for repair). But that was ok, I was happy with the Nokia phone, call me stupid or just a fan...

Then comes the release of the NAM phones, Great for advanced features like 3G connectivity but you can no longer change the firmware since the phone hardware was different. I bought a nokia N85 and had to return it to Dell once I figured this out. I was very disappointed because I do believe the N85 is a superior phone to the iphone but I refuse to use it without greek text input support.

So now it's time for me to upgrade my phone. What do u think nokia? Should I really upgrade to a N97 or N86 or should I just bite the bullet, swallow my pride and get myself an iphone just like the rest of crowd....

To wrap things up, I wholeheartedly support the notion of adding on languages via language packs, even at a cost. What's a $20 or $40 update if I've already spend $699 on a N97?
I would even challenge a third party like Nuance or Beiks to consider developing an add-on to allow other languages phone support.

Remember nokia and Nokia-USA in particular. If there's a reason you are selling phones in North America it's because of users like myself. We pay full price for a phone that we select based on features we feel are lacking from your competitors that sell devices in the US. Competitors and newcomers (apple, google) are upping the ante and they are offering lucrative alternatives to your flagship products.

If you don't wise up I'm afraid that I will have to succumb to my temptation and get a competitors phone.
Release the language packs addons!!

Agreed

Language packs should be made available for the phones.

I have a N86 NAM on preorder here in the US. I know the the N86 standard has all the languages that I know, german/english/danish/icelandic/norwegian/swedish. Only one of those will be available on my NAM edition, and there is no real reason for why I shouldn´t be able to install any of the other languages on there.

My N95 I bought in Denmark to have the above languages available to me, even though it cost me the 3G frequencies here in the US

Come on Nokia, you´re not competing in the bottom range of the market. It not a question of being able to do it, but being willing to do it.

Agreed

I have UK phone, but work for an international company, with contacts around the world. I am currently on assignment to an Arabic speaking country. I also speak German, French and Chinese. This does mean that I have a need to send and receive messages in different languages and also to store contacts with their correct spelling. It should be possible to load additional language packs, especially as Nokia already has these available.

Greek

I am quite disappointed there is no way to add the Greek language to my N97.
My preveous cheaper Sony Eriicsson already had this feature, and I do miss it!!
Nokia, please do something about your language packs, they are too limited now!
