Discussion for Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 for S60

Wed, 2009-07-01 15:33 Ilgaz: It is not S60, it is 5800. rename it please

This will be asked for sure, let me be direct. What are the pure technical reasons of not releasing Java update to all S60 devices while some other company keeps maintaining years old device with all the new software updates?

If you expect people to upgrade their hardware to keep up with some great software updates, trust me, no company can manage it, even Apple themselves. That is why they keep maintaining the first gen iPhone.

As a person who kept saying "Users should have Java updates on devices just like Windows and OS X users", you really got me fooled this time. I thought Nokia made an amazingly good PR move by not just keeping up J2ME but also updating it unlike some other company who reached new low by spreading FUD about Java.

I agree with you on that one. When I saw this I thought great news. Only to find that is is not for all S60 devices but only N97 and 5800. Maybe Nokia will roll out mor compatibility when it is nearer to full release. Who knows?

Wed, 2009-07-08 12:40 Ilgaz: Just turned down free E63

Because of this policy and the fact that I own S60 V3, S80 (9300) and SE UIQ3 (P1i), I turned down a free E63 from my cell provider today.

I kinda know that whatever updates a certain model, all resources will be diverted to it and the brand new phone you own will not have java update and even firmware updates will go down in terms of frequency of releases.

Just to remind Nokia what this policy costs to them. Yes, I rejected a free Symbian phone and I am not missing anything. One way or another, Microsoft still supports Windows XP, a 6-7 years old operating system. It must be really costing them and they would be really happy if everyone moved to Vista or 7 (when released) but they keep updating it. Why? Enterprise, business, trust. These are the things which companies with cult following can ignore but not Nokia or Microsoft.

Let the "jesus phone" company stop maintaining first gen "jesus phone" and see what happens. Being part of the community (not cult), I can predict what happens. It won't be pretty.

agreed-- however i'm sure Nokia's technology model doesn't support updating all software at once.

Apple supports all their products and iPods because they have a very small amount of products to support, all with the same similar features and hardware under the hood... Thereby it is very easy for them to push a software update with the risk of defects and bugs being very small.

Nokia on the other hand, has dozens of different phone models with different specs, different hardware, and different operating systems... It becomes almost impossible to maintain all these applications and release an SINGLE software update across all platforms, because of the custom code that needs to be tested for every model... which is a time consuming process. Just look at the OVI Contacts beta page, there's about 12 difference versions of .SIS application files.

While I agree that the title is very misleading and should be changed-- I believe that these models are just the testing grounds for the java runtime release, that once finished will be designed and optimized for all of the other models.

So patience! They're free software updates! Don't be so spoiled, theres nothing wrong with the old one!

As for me, I have to DOWNGRADE (from my Nokia E90 to either 5800 or N97 which both much worse than my current device) to feel how great that update is! Why? Still cannot understand.

Sat, 2009-11-07 19:50 arunib: Exactly...

Its high time Nokia thought of something like common updates ...like kernel updates ( symbian has gone open source and development is faster.. But the old devices are still using old symbian, they dont get a chance to update to the new version). I wonder why Nokia could take it as an opportunity to beta test all new softwares to a much larger audience rather than limiting it to people owning a special device (in this case s60 v5 ,which only 5800 and a few device supports)
